There is no single borough-wide “collection this week” table. The correct answer depends on your address, calendar and any temporary holiday adjustment.
Lisburn & Castlereagh Bin Collection Calendar 2026: A, B, C or D?
The council publishes four one-page printable calendars. Calendar A and B are listed as bin routes; Calendar C and D cover bins plus kerbie/wheelie box routes.

Holiday information is separate
The printed calendars point residents back to the live holiday-information service for changed collection dates.
The current 2026 one-page calendar design displays February through October. Do not extrapolate November, Christmas or New Year dates from the colour pattern. Recheck the live council service when later-year arrangements are published.

Council holiday guidance says that where the container is not emptied on the scheduled alternative collection day, continue to leave it at the collection point until it is emptied.
Bins by 6am, Boxes by 7am: Which Set-Out Time Should You Follow?
This is an important source conflict. The older 2023 waste-policy PDF uses a generic 6am rule for a “bin or box”, but the council’s current live kerbie-box and wheelie-box pages now state 7am for boxes.
Wheeled bins → by 6am
Current mixed-dry, brown-bin and 23-litre food-bin pages all use the 6am kerbside/curtilage deadline.
- Close the lid.
- Turn handles toward the roadside.
- Keep access clear.
- Bring the container in promptly after collection.
Kerbie / wheelie boxes → by 7am
The current live box pages use a 7am collection deadline and require materials to be sorted into the correct groups.
- Keep items clean and dry.
- Do not overfill boxes.
- Secure lids in windy weather.
- Sort before collection morning.
For boxes, follow the current 7am webpage rather than the older generic PDF statement. For normal wheeled bins, use 6am.
Extra bags beside wheeled bins are not normally collected. The council only allows exceptions when it announces special arrangements because of circumstances such as adverse weather, vehicle breakdown or road closure.
Which Bin or Container Does Your Property Use?
Lisburn & Castlereagh currently has several household systems operating across the council area. Do not assume every property has the same coloured bins.
Non-recyclable waste
Use for household material that cannot use the recycling, food/garden or recycling-centre route.
Dry recyclable packaging
Current accepted categories include paper, cardboard, cartons, aerosols, metal packaging and plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.
Food + garden waste
For accepted food scraps, grass, leaves, prunings and other compostable material.
Food-only collection
Some properties use the smaller 23-litre bin for food scraps and selected compostable paper items.
Current council recycling guidance says these items must never be placed in kerbside recycling containers. Return them through the appropriate retailer or household recycling centre route.
The current mixed-dry recycling page does not list glass as a normal accepted category, while kerbie/wheelie-box systems have a separate glass group. The newly approved future recycling bin will include glass, but do not change your current sorting until the council confirms your household’s transition.
Kerbie and Wheelie Boxes: Sort Recycling Before Collection Day
Box-route residents need to separate material groups. A recyclable item placed in the wrong group can still cause the box to be left.

The council’s item finder says shredded paper should not go in the mixed recycling bin because it can affect sorting machinery. On appropriate box routes it can go in the black recycling box when bagged, or into the food-and-garden waste bin/home composter.
Overflow recycling
Current box guidance allows suitable extra recycling in securely tied overflow bags, with one material type per bag. Glass must not be placed in an overflow bag.

Use council-provided compostable liners
The council asks residents to use its liners because they decompose with the food waste.

Tie the liner before moving it to your brown bin.

The council’s live help page directs residents with an uncollected bin or box to the service-updates/disruptions page first.
Confirm that container was actually due
Check your address result and the correct A/B/C/D calendar.
Check for a bank-holiday replacement date
A normal Monday or Tuesday can move to a Saturday or Sunday.
Check the set-out deadline
Current guidance uses 6am for wheeled bins and 7am for kerbie/wheelie boxes.
Look for a contamination sticker or card
If one is attached, remove the incorrect material and wait for the next scheduled collection.
Check road and vehicle access
Poorly parked vehicles or another obstruction can prevent the lorry reaching the collection point.
Check live disruption information
Temporary weather, road or vehicle problems may already explain the missed round.
Contact the waste team when the problem remains unexplained

The official waste-policy PDF states that where a missed collection is due to council error, the council will return to collect the bin as soon as possible.
The 2023 policy PDF describes a one-off mop-up possibility for some contamination mistakes, but the current live contamination page simply instructs residents to remove unsuitable material and present the container on the next scheduled day. This guide follows the newer live instruction rather than promising an extra collection.

Larger Bins, Replacement Containers and Extra Brown-Bin Capacity
Who may qualify for extra residual capacity?
Six or more permanent residents
The current help page lists larger households as an eligibility route.
Additional medical waste
A medical condition generating extra residual waste can support an application.
Young children
The policy includes families producing large amounts of disposable-nappy waste.
Current ordering guidance says residents normally buy a residual bin from a local supplier. Check the correct size with the council before purchasing.
Additional food-and-garden waste bin
£60 per extra bin
The current service runs from 1 April to 31 March and uses a flat annual charge even when requested later in the year.
£30 supply cost
The current application page lists £30 where the resident also needs the physical additional brown bin.
Not automatically approved
The council checks whether the existing collection round has enough capacity before accepting an additional service.
An additional brown bin without the current paid-collection sticker will not be emptied.
Home composter
The current order page lists a home composter at £20, payable before delivery.
Assisted Bin Collection: Help Moving Bins or Boxes
A household can apply where nobody living at the property is able to put the bins or boxes out for collection.

The current council help page uses this as the central assisted-collection test.

Do not repeatedly report the bin as missed when the real problem is getting it to the collection point.

The policy PDF says Operational Services may carry out a risk assessment before providing a backdoor collection.
The older policy refers to supporting evidence from a doctor or medical/care professional. Follow the current application process for exactly what evidence the council now asks you to submit.
Bulky Waste Collection: Free Allowance, Charges and Item Preparation
Large household items should not be left next to your normal bin. The council has a booked bulky-item service with a defined free allowance.

Current guidance excludes items such as asbestos, chemicals, paint stripper, building/repair waste, permanent household fixtures, garden structures, tyres, gas canisters, car parts, oil tanks, televisions and items too large or heavy for two people to handle safely.
Present them exactly where instructed during booking. Do not leave them on the footpath or roadway where they could cause an obstruction.
Household Recycling Centres: Before You Load the Car
Lisburn & Castlereagh operates three Household Recycling Centres. Access is for council-area residents and the current visiting guidance asks you to have photographic ID with proof of address available.

Holiday hours can differ, and individual centre pages can display temporary notices. Check the selected centre shortly before travelling.
What to do before arriving
- Take photographic ID with proof of address available.
- If the photo ID has no address, also take a recent utility bill.
- Sort material by type before leaving home.
- Bag ordinary household waste.
- Keep garden waste loose.
- Keep cardboard and other recyclables separate rather than bagging them.
- Do not try to walk into the facility.
- Children and pets must remain in the vehicle.
- Do not directly empty a wheelie bin into a site skip/container.
The council no longer accepts domestic heating-oil tanks at its HRCs or through bulky collection. Use an authorised specialist contractor.
Approved Future Kerbside Service: What Changes and What Does Not Change Yet?
On 26 May 2026 the council announced approval of a future standardised, in-house household waste and recycling model across Lisburn & Castlereagh.
