Belfast does not have one recycling setup for every address. One household may use black, blue and brown wheelie bins; another may use black/red recycling boxes, stacked wheelie boxes, a green food-waste bin or a purple glass box.
This guide shows exactly which official route to open, what to click next, what each container accepts, why a bin can be tagged, when a miss is reportable and what to prepare before ordering a bin, booking bulky waste or visiting a recycling centre.
Belfast bin collection: what most residents need first
Do not start by looking for a universal “Belfast bin day”. Start with the address and identify whether Belfast City Council or the Bryson Recycling box route applies to the container you need.

You will see Bins and Recycling boxes. They do not lead to the same lookup.
Choose “Bins” for council-collected containers
Use this route for general waste, recycling and compost wheelie bins, wheelie recycling boxes and purple glass boxes collected by Belfast City Council crews.
Choose “Recycling boxes” for the Bryson route
Use this when the property has black/red recycling boxes and a green food-waste bin collected by Bryson Recycling on Belfast’s behalf.

The Belfast form lets you choose street-name or postcode search. For postcode, enter the full code with a space.
Save container + date
Write “black bin — 3 September” or “recycling boxes + food — 5 September”. A date without the container name is easy to misread later.
Do this now: identify the container first, then use the matching lookup. That single step avoids most Belfast collection-day confusion.

Glass bottles and jars can go in the dedicated glass container where supplied. Belfast says caps and lids can remain on.
Only one or two recycling boxes? Belfast advises rotating material groups between collection weeks. For example, paper/card one week and glass the next.
More box recycling than fits? Current guidance allows one additional tied bag containing a single type of recyclable material beside the recycling boxes.
Never put batteries, vapes or small electricals in household bins or boxes. They can start fires in bins, vehicles and sorting facilities. Use retailer take-back or a Belfast recycling centre.
Unsure about one item? Check it before collection day. A single wrong item can cause a recycling container to be tagged and left.
Make the bin collection-ready before you go to bed
Compare it with the exact address result.
This may be outside the house or an agreed point such as the top of an alleyway.
New vehicle safety systems can prevent an overfilled bin being lifted.
Remove it. Large liners can result in a red tag.
Routine side waste is not part of the household lift.
Numbering bins and boxes helps crews return them to the correct property.
Side waste can cost more than a missed collection: Belfast warns that improperly left waste can lead to fixed penalties of £80 or £400 depending on the extent of the offence.
30-second check: correct bin → right contents → closed lid → no liner → no side bags → accessible by 7am.
My Belfast bin was not emptied — what exactly should I do?
WAIT. Crews may still be working. Leave the container available until the normal collection window has passed.
FIX. Read the reason. Tagged containers do not qualify for a return collection just because the contents are corrected later.
FIX. Remove enough material for the lid to fully close and use the next scheduled collection.
FIX. Remove every contaminating item before the next collection day.
CHECK ACCESS. Parked vehicles, weather or vehicle problems can affect an entire street.
REPORT. This is the situation most likely to qualify as a genuine missed collection.
Confirm the collection was due
Check the exact property and make sure that specific bin or box was scheduled.
Check presentation
Confirm the container was at the designated point by 7am and accessible to the crew.
Look for a tag
Check for a tag explaining an open lid, overfilling, excessive weight, contamination, damage or a large liner.
Wait until after 7pm
Do not report an ordinary missed Belfast collection before 7pm on the usual collection day.
Use the official report route
If the collection genuinely qualifies as missed, submit the Belfast City Council report and keep the reference.
Bryson box delayed? Belfast currently asks affected residents to continue leaving recycling boxes out while outstanding Bryson collections are completed.
Remember: tagged bin = rejected collection. Correctly presented, untagged bin still full after 7pm = missed-bin route.
Red tag on the bin? Fix the reason, not the symptom
Lid will not close
Remove excess material. Do not force the lid or pile material above the rim.
Large liner inside
Take the liner out. Belfast specifically asks residents not to line the whole bin with a large bag.
Too heavy
Remove dense or unsuitable material and move it to the correct disposal route.
Wrong recycling
Remove every contaminating item. Collection resumes on the next scheduled day, not through the missed-bin return route.
Damaged container
Use the bin-problem/order service so the council can determine whether the container needs replacement.
Do not report a red-tagged container as “missed”. Belfast explicitly treats these as non-qualifying collections.
What to do with extra Belfast household waste
Pull recycling back out
Check whether paper, cardboard, cans, plastic containers, glass or food waste is taking space in the black bin.
Flatten bulky packaging
Squash and flatten appropriate waste to use the available container space properly.
Use recycling facilities
Extra household waste and many electrical/recyclable items can go to the appropriate recycling centre or amenity site.
Use bulky collection
Do not break a sofa or mattress into the black bin. Use Belfast’s free bulky-waste route.
One-black-bin rule: Belfast normally collects one general-waste bin per household unless additional capacity has been approved.
Six or more residents?
The household can ask Belfast about additional general-waste capacity.
Medical condition creates extra waste?
Additional capacity can be assessed where qualifying medical waste increases normal household rubbish.
Already recycling fully?
A council assessment can consider extra capacity where the household is making proper use of its recycling system.
Do not solve capacity with side bags. Re-sort first; use bulky/recycling facilities next; request an assessment if the underlying household need remains.

Check what is actually missing
You can order general waste, blue recycling, brown compost, food-waste containers, recycling boxes, glass boxes and replacement box lids.
If renting and there is no black bin, contact the landlord first
Belfast advises tenants to contact the landlord before ordering a missing general-waste container.
Shared apartment bins?
Report replacement issues to the management company, agent or housing officer rather than ordering an individual container.
Complete the online order
Choose the exact container type and provide the correct delivery address.
Expect front-of-property delivery
Bins and boxes are normally left at the front of the property or front garden where possible.
Food-waste bags are different: they cannot currently be ordered online. Tie the last bag to the food/compost-bin handle or collect bags from participating community centres or recycling centres.
Before paying £26.27: make sure you need a black general-waste bin and not a free recycling container.
Cannot move the bin? Belfast’s assisted lift is free
Belfast assesses the request after application.
Once approved, the lift can take up to four weeks to begin.
The arrangement is reviewed annually and stops if it is not renewed.
Safe access still matters
Unlock gates, clear paths and follow any collection-point instructions given during the assessment.
Visual impairment: Belfast can provide tactile plaques for bins and boxes so different containers can be identified by touch.
Best use: if physically getting the bin to the collection point is the recurring problem, assisted lift is more useful than repeated missed-bin reports.
Belfast bulky waste: free collection, but preparation matters
The council’s household bulky-waste service currently has no collection charge.
Every item must be included in the confirmed booking.
You can request a future household collection in advance.
The council normally contacts online applicants within two working days to confirm the collection date.
List every item before submitting
Do not add unbooked furniture to the pile later. The crew only collects requested items.
Put items out by 7am
Use the location where the general-waste collection vehicle can reach them.
Keep absorbent items dry
Cover mattresses, sofas, armchairs and carpets so they do not become too heavy with rainwater.
Make items safe
Tape glass, remove exposed nails/screws and dismantle suitable wooden furniture where instructed.
Empty fridges and freezers
Remove all food and drink before the appliance is presented.
Not ordinary bulky waste: renovation rubble, bathroom suites, fitted kitchen units, plasterboard, soil and similar building material need another disposal route.
Before booking: reuse if possible → confirm accepted item → book → wait for date → prepare it exactly as instructed.

Let the council check eligibility
The household collection is for cement-based asbestos, not every asbestos-containing material.
Use the supplied wrapping route
Eligible residents can receive up to two sets of asbestos collection bags. Follow the supplied safety instructions.
Double-bag or double-wrap
Red bag first, seal it, place it inside the clear bag and seal again. Oversized material needs suitable double wrapping.
Only then arrange collection
The online collection form should be completed after the eligible material has been removed and correctly wrapped.
Do not break asbestos to make it fit. Breaking material can release hazardous fibres. Contractor-removed asbestos is also excluded from Belfast’s household collection service.
Route: identify → contact council → confirm eligibility → wrap correctly → book collection. Never take it directly to the tip.

Useful clue: if one tagged bin was left, inspect the bin. If most of the street was left, check access, disruption and holiday information before assuming every household made the same sorting mistake.
