From 1 April 2026, empty food and liquid cartons such as long-life milk, plant-based drinks, soup and sauce cartons can go directly into the purple-top bin after rinsing.
Tear or fold it down so it is no larger than wheelie-bin size, remove polystyrene, keep the card dry and secure it with the blue bag. Regular excess recyclers can request additional capacity.
Batteries, Bulbs, Textiles and Vapes: Present Them Separately
Do not hide batteries, bulbs or vapes inside ordinary bins. These items need visible, separate presentation so crews can remove them safely.

Household batteries, excluding car batteries, go in a clear plastic bag placed on top of the purple-top bin.

Standard, LED and low-energy bulbs can use a clear bag on the purple bin. Do not mix bulbs and batteries in one bag.

Clean clothes, shoes, curtains and suitable belts can be presented in a visible suitable bag beside the purple-top bin.

Used e-cigarettes/vapes can be placed in a clear bag on top of the purple-top bin or taken to an HRC.

The March 2026 policy allows additional or larger recycling containers after the contractor verifies that a household regularly exceeds the standard capacity.
Six or more permanent residents?
Additional 140L capacity may be approved

£25 administration charge
The current online request page lists a £25 non-refundable administration fee and says recycling participation may be monitored before a decision, which can take up to six weeks.
Contaminated recycling: what the policy says
Crew may remove the wrong item
Where practical, acceptable recycling can still be collected while the contaminant is left, with an information hanger explaining the issue.
The whole container can be left
If contamination creates a health/safety problem, crews may not empty the container and can leave instructions for correcting it.
Open lids and side waste
- Residual red-bin lids should close.
- Routine residual side waste is not collected.
- If easily removable excess prevents the lid closing, the crew may remove it, empty the bin and place the excess back inside for the next collection.
- If excess cannot be removed safely/easily, the bin may stay unemptied.
- Correctly presented recyclable side waste can be collected.
- Extra paper/card must be securely reduced to a safe collection size.
- Up to four suitable clear biodegradable garden-waste sacks can accompany a green bin.
Telford & Wrekin Refuse Collection: Red-Top Bin Rules
The Telford & Wrekin refuse collection uses the red-top bin for non-recyclable household waste. The standard replacement size now depends on property size.

A damaged, missing or incorrect container needs the container-request route rather than a missed-bin report.

The current July 2026 request page says there is no charge for normal replacement bins and containers. The March 2026 policy also explains that repeated replacements within a rolling period can be charged in some circumstances, so the online service remains the best current source for your request.
If the crew arrives to replace a damaged container and cannot find/access the old one, the replacement may not be left.

Assisted collections are intended for households where illness, disability or restricted mobility prevents normal presentation and there is no other capable person aged 16 or over in the home who can do it.
