Independent Newtownabbey resident guide: exact date-checking steps, Wheelie Box sorting, missed collections, bulky waste and recycling-centre help.
Check the live date first, then follow the correct container workflow
A Newtownabbey bin collection search should start with your own street or postcode, not a town-wide timetable. The council’s main search is labelled “Search street name or postcode”.
Once you have the date, this guide tells you what the result means, how to sort the three Wheelie Box tiers, when a missed collection can be reported and which service to use for waste that does not belong at the kerb.
The answer in 30 seconds
If you only need today’s practical route, start here.
Verified 28 August 2026: collections due on Monday 31 August 2026 are scheduled to operate normally for the Summer Bank Holiday. Do not automatically move a Monday collection to Tuesday.
What are you trying to do?
Choose the job. You should not need to read every section.
What to do after opening the Newtownabbey bin checker
weekly schedule Black bin
fortnightly date Brown bin
check live schedule
Open the official schedule search
Open the council Bin Schedule page and locate the Search street name or postcode field.
Enter the full postcode first
Type the complete postcode for the property, including both parts of the postcode.
Try the street name if needed
If the postcode route does not give a useful result, search using the street name instead.
Read the container and date together
Check whether the result applies to the Wheelie Box, black bin or brown bin and record the date beside that container.
Use live chat as a fallback
If you still cannot find the date, use the council live chat and type bin collection date followed by the postcode.
Present the correct container by 7am
Put the due bin or Wheelie Box at the edge of the property or designated collection point by 7am.
Try the street name
Do not choose another road or nearby postcode just to obtain a date.
Use council live chat
Look for the purple live-chat button and type bin collection date followed by your postcode.
Write container + date
Example: “Black bin — Thursday 3 September”, not simply “bins Thursday”.
Do this now: check your address, write down each relevant container separately and set the reminder for the evening before.
Know which service you are waiting for
Weekly Wheelie Box
Three stackable compartments on a wheeled trolley. Total capacity is 180 litres per weekly collection.
180L black bin
Non-recyclable residual household waste. The current harmonised service uses a fortnightly black-bin collection.
Brown bin
Food and garden waste service. Check the live property schedule for its actual next collection date.
Important: “Wheelie Box every week” does not mean the black or brown bin is also due every week.
Exactly what goes in the top, middle and bottom box
Clean clothing and shoes
Put clean clothing and paired shoes into a separate bag and present it beside the Wheelie Box.
Extra recycling
Use an overflow bag or container with only one material type inside. Keep the extra material separated exactly like the Wheelie Box.
Never bag extra glass
Glass must remain in the bottom Wheelie Box compartment. Do not put glass into an overflow bag.
Never place these in the Wheelie Box or household bins.
It is not currently accepted in the council kerbside recycling system.
Clean accepted rigid packaging belongs in the middle Wheelie Box compartment.
Five-second sort test: paper/card? top. Packaging? middle. Glass bottle/jar? bottom. Textile? bag beside box. Battery/vape? never in household bins.
Collection morning: six checks before 7am
Check the live schedule rather than copying neighbours.
Use the designated collection point where applicable.
The council asks residents to present the bin with the handle turned towards the roadside.
A raised or overfilled lid can cause the bin to be rejected.
Only waste inside the main body of the black bin is collected.
Keep the bin secure and avoid leaving it kerbside overnight. Put it out close to 7am instead.
Brown bin too heavy? Wet organic waste can become too heavy for the lifting equipment. Council guidance suggests presenting it before it becomes excessively heavy and, when needed, at around half full.
If an overweight brown bin is refused: remove some material and wait for the next scheduled collection. The council says it cannot return simply because the container was too heavy.
Collection-morning sequence: correct date → correct container → correct contents → lid closed → handle out → ready by 7am.
Should you report the collection, or fix the bin first?
Check the live schedule first.
The council may refuse to return for a late container.
Correct the presentation problem before the next scheduled collection.
Council can refuse containers that were not approved.
These can prevent collection even when your presentation was correct.
This is the route most likely to qualify as a genuine missed collection.
Confirm the collection was due
Check the live schedule and make sure that exact container was due at your address.
Confirm it was out by 7am
Check that the container was at the edge of the property or designated collection point by 7am.
Check the lid, size and access
Make sure the lid was closed, the bin was not overfilled or unauthorised, and parked vehicles, roadworks or weather did not block access.
Report in the correct window
If the miss was not your fault, contact Waste Management after 9am on the next working day and within 24 hours of the missed collection.
Leave the container available
Continue to leave the correctly presented container out while the council considers or arranges the return collection.
Have this ready before calling: full address, postcode, container type, scheduled collection date, confirmation it was out before 7am, lid status and any access problem.
Good report wording: “My Wheelie Box at [address/postcode] was due on [date]. It was out before 7am, correctly sorted, lid closed and accessible.”
Do not assume every Bank Holiday moves the collection
Summer Bank Holiday
No change. Collections operate normally.
Christmas Day
No service. Approved alternative collection date: Sunday 27 December 2026.
Boxing Day
No collection required. Collections resume normally from Monday 28 December 2026.
New Year’s Day
No service. Approved alternative collection date: Saturday 2 January 2027.
Recheck closer to Christmas. The dates above come from the approved 2026 council collection arrangements, but an operational notice issued later should override a saved copy of this guide.
Immediate rule for 31 August 2026: if Monday is your normal collection day, follow the normal Monday routine.
Before paying for a replacement bin, check the warranty first
Check the five-year warranty
Qualifying bins and Wheelie Boxes within the warranty period are replaced free.
Was it damaged or lost by the crew?
The council can review collection-vehicle footage where loss or damage may have happened during collection.
Was it lost through criminal activity?
The current policy provides a discounted replacement route when a crime number is supplied.
Are you aged 65 or over?
The current policy also provides a reduced rate on proof of age.
Money-saving sequence: warranty → crew damage/loss → crime discount → 65+ rate → standard replacement price.
Choose the right support route
Unable to move the bins
Designed for residents who cannot present or retrieve containers because of age or disability and have no other support available.
6 or more permanent residents
This is one of the council’s listed criteria for a larger-capacity domestic waste collection.
2 or more babies in nappies
This is another listed eligibility route.
Medical waste need
A medical condition that creates additional household waste can support an application.
What happens after applying? Send the completed relevant application to Waste Management. A member of staff will contact you to discuss the household circumstances.
Do not just write “bin too small”. State the actual qualifying household circumstance: resident count, nappies, medical need or inability to move containers.
How to use the bulky collection without wasting your free booking
Count the items first
A normal collection is limited to three items. Do not describe several pieces as one vague “suite”.
Check whether each item is accepted
White goods, suitable beds, mattresses, sofas and other listed bulky household items can qualify.
Prepare awkward items
Remove glass where required, hammer down nails and break suitable materials into lengths of about 4ft where instructed.
Put everything in one visible outside location
Use an accessible area at the front, side or rear. Items are not collected from inside the dwelling, garage, shed or outbuilding.
Have items ready by 7am next working day
The items must be available even though the actual collection may take up to 10 working days.
Examples accepted
Large white electrical goods, suitable sofas, armchairs, beds, mattresses, dismantled kitchen units and certain prepared bulky garden materials.
Examples not collected
Asbestos, plasterboard, glass, tyres, building materials including paint, oil tanks, heavy concrete items and commercial items.
Keep textiles dry
Cover mattresses, sofas and armchairs. Saturated or unsafe items may be refused until they can be handled safely.
Possible additional charge: if the collection takes more than about 15 minutes because of the quantity, location or accessibility, it can be assessed for a charge.
Before booking: count → check acceptance → prepare safely → choose one outdoor location → list only the items you actually want removed.

O’Neill Road accepts many useful problem items: batteries, car batteries, small and large electricals, paint, rubble, plasterboard, gas canisters, scrap metal, engine oil, mattresses, carpet and reusable household materials.
Site rules: children and animals must stay inside vehicles, household waste must be sorted into the correct containers, and entry can be refused if the site is unsafe or full.
Trip checklist: material accepted → resident proof → van booking if needed → live opening status → load sorted before arrival.

waste@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk
Include enough information for the team to identify the household and collection.
Put this in the first message: full address + postcode + Wheelie Box/black/brown + due date + out-before-7am status + problem + any obstruction or rejection.
Better than “my bin was missed”: “My black bin at [address] was due [date], was out before 7am with the lid closed, and there was no access problem.”

Best workflow: understand the rule on this page → prepare the information → open the matching official service → complete the action.
Newtownabbey bin collection FAQs
How do I find my Newtownabbey bin collection day?
Open the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Bin Schedule page and use the Search street name or postcode field. Try the full postcode first. Record the container and date together rather than saving one generic bin day.

How often is the Newtownabbey Wheelie Box collected?
The three-tier Wheelie Box is collected every week. The top 55 litre box is for paper and card, the middle 70 litre box is for accepted plastics, metals and cartons, and the bottom 55 litre box is for glass bottles and jars.
When should I report a missed Newtownabbey bin?
If the collection was missed through no fault of the resident, report it to Waste Management after 9am on the next working day and within 24 hours of the missed collection. Leave the container out while the issue is being dealt with.
Can I leave extra recycling beside my Newtownabbey Wheelie Box?
Yes. Extra recycling can be presented in overflow bags or containers when each one contains only one correctly separated material type. Never put glass into an overflow bag.
How does Newtownabbey bulky waste collection work?
Each household currently receives one free bulky waste collection per financial year for up to three permissible items. Further collections cost £10 for up to three items. Items must be outside in one accessible location and ready by 7am on the next working day after the request.
How much is a replacement black bin or Wheelie Box?
The current council waste policy lists a replacement 180 litre black bin at £29.45, a brown bin at £17.60, a Wheelie Box at £17.60 and a food caddy at £3.10. Qualifying containers within the five-year warranty period are replaced free.
