Angus Bin Collection 2026: Dates, Bin Colours & £55 Garden Waste

Angus Council • 2026 household bin guide

Check Your Angus Bin Date, Then Match the Right Colour

Angus uses a five-stream household system: purple for non-recyclable rubbish, grey for plastic containers, cans and cartons, blue for paper and card, brown for food waste where the service is available, and green for the paid garden-waste service.

Your exact collection dates are property-specific. Check the Angus Council calendar first, then put the correct container at its collection point by 7am.

Angus Bin Collection 2026: Quick Answer

Use Angus Council’s official collection-date service and select your exact property. Purple general waste is normally collected every two weeks. Grey container recycling and blue paper/card recycling are each collected every four weeks on alternate fortnights. Brown food caddies are collected weekly where that household service is available.

The green garden-waste service currently costs £55 per bin per year and normally runs fortnightly in eligible areas. Angus says there will be no garden-waste collections between 27 November 2026 and 7 February 2027.

How to Check Your Angus Bin Collection Day

Collection dates vary by property, so do not calculate your next bin from a neighbour’s containers or a town-wide rota. Angus Council provides an address-based calendar that shows the collection dates linked to your property.

  1. Open the official Angus collection-date service.
Use the council’s property lookup rather than an old screenshot or third-party timetable.
  2. Select the exact household address.
This is particularly important in rural areas, private roads and properties using special collection arrangements.
  3. Read every waste stream shown.
Purple, grey, blue, brown and green services use different cycles.
  4. Download or save the property calendar.
Keep the colour and date together rather than remembering only a weekday.
  5. Put the scheduled container out by 7am.
Angus also asks residents to position bins so they do not obstruct people with visual impairments and, where practical, face the handles towards the road.
Useful routine: write down “Grey — Tuesday 29 September” rather than simply “bin day Tuesday”. The colour matters because grey and blue recycling alternate.

Angus Bin Colours and Normal Collection Frequencies

Container Main use Normal cycle Important rule
Purple bin / approved white sacks Non-recyclable household waste Every 2 weeks Waste must fit inside the bin with the lid closed; ordinary side bags are not normally collected.
Grey bin Plastic bottles and containers, food/drink cans, suitable foil and cartons Every 4 weeks Items should be clean, loose and dry rather than bagged.
Blue bin Paper, card and cardboard Every 4 weeks Collected on the alternate fortnight from the grey bin.
Brown food caddy Cooked and uncooked food waste Weekly where available Remove food packaging first.
Green garden bin Subscribed garden waste Every 2 weeks in season A valid paid-service sticker is required.
Do not use a generic UK bin-colour chart. Angus uses purple for residual waste and grey for container recycling, while other councils use the same colours for completely different materials.

Purple Bin: Non-Recyclable General Waste

The purple bin, or a communal container with a purple lid, is for household waste that cannot use one of Angus’s recycling or specialist disposal routes. It is normally collected fortnightly.

Bag waste inside

Angus asks residents to bag general waste before placing it in the purple bin so loose material is less likely to blow away when the container is emptied.

Close the lid

Waste should fit under a closed lid. Ordinary bags beside or on top of the container are not part of the standard household collection.

Do not over-compact

Material packed too tightly can stay inside when the bin is tipped. If that happens, loosen it safely before the next scheduled collection.

Purple-bin recycling checks

Angus checks residual bins for recyclable material. If a purple bin contains too many recyclables, the council may place a tag on it. Repeated contamination can result in the bin being left unemptied until the recyclable material is removed.

Paper and card belong in the blue bin. Plastic bottles and containers, cans and cartons belong in the grey bin. Glass bottles and jars should use a separate glass recycling point.

Grey and Blue Recycling Bins: The Alternate-Fortnight System

Angus completed its move to separate household recycling streams in 2025. Grey and blue bins are now each collected every four weeks, but their collections fall on alternate fortnights.

Grey bin

Plastic containers, cans and cartons

Typical accepted material includes:

  • Plastic bottles and bottle lids
  • Clean plastic food containers
  • Food and drink cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Foil food trays
  • Metal lids
  • Food and drink cartons

Prepare it: rinse food residue away and place accepted items in clean, loose and dry.

Blue bin

Paper, card and cardboard

Typical accepted material includes:

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Catalogues and brochures
  • Office paper
  • Envelopes
  • Paper bags
  • Clean cardboard
  • Plain greetings cards

Keep out: food-soiled paper/card and heavily decorated or plasticised material should follow the council’s item-specific guidance.

Glass is not part of either household recycling bin. Angus uses separate glass recycling points for bottles and jars.

Brown Food-Waste Caddies

Angus collects food waste weekly from households in towns and villages and from rural properties where blue bins have been provided, excluding glens and private-road arrangements identified by the council. Other households can use recycling centres for food waste.

Put food in

  • Meat and bones
  • Fish
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Bread
  • Rice and pasta
  • Dairy
  • Tea and coffee grounds
  • Egg shells

Remove packaging first

Food packaging does not belong in the food caddy. Angus also says liquids should not be poured into the caddy.

You can use a liner in the indoor caddy. Transfer the food waste into the larger outdoor caddy for collection.

If the outdoor food caddy is missing, first check your property calendar to make sure the address receives the food-waste service before requesting a replacement.

Glass, Soft Plastics, Batteries, Vapes and Electrical Items

Glass bottles and jars

Use Angus’s separate glass recycling points. The council operates a network at locations such as supermarkets, leisure facilities, public car parks, village halls and recycling centres.

Find an Angus glass recycling point

Soft plastics

Plastic bags, wrappers, pouches and similar soft plastics do not belong in the grey bin. Some supermarkets provide soft-plastic recycling. If a suitable recycling route is unavailable, follow Angus Council’s current plastics guidance.

Check Angus plastics guidance

Batteries

Never put batteries in household bins. They are a fire risk. Use a dedicated battery collection point at a recycling centre or another accepted retailer/recycling route.

Check battery disposal

Vapes and electricals

Do not put electrical items or vapes in household bins. Use a recycling centre, appropriate WEEE bank, retailer take-back or another council-listed route.

Angus Garden Waste 2026: £55 Subscription and Winter Pause

The green-bin garden-waste service currently costs £55 per bin each year. Angus states there are no exemptions or concessions. You can subscribe during the year, but the service is not available in some more rural locations or where road-end collections operate.

Garden-waste point Current Angus rule What to do
Annual charge £55 per subscribed bin Check address eligibility before paying.
Collection cycle Every two weeks during the operating season Use your property calendar for actual dates.
Sticker A valid subscription sticker is required Attach it to the correct green bin.
Winter pause No collections from 27 November 2026 to 7 February 2027 Plan garden work around the pause and check the live calendar.
Start after payment Allow up to 10 working days for the sticker and 7 working days for collection routes to update Do not expect an immediate uplift after payment.
Date wording check: Angus Council currently gives the end of the winter pause as “Monday 7 February 2027”. The calendar date 7 February 2027 falls on a Sunday, so check the live property calendar before relying on the weekday wording for the restart.

Neighbours can share a green bin

Angus allows neighbours to share a subscription, but one person must register and pay and the bin is collected from one registered address. Any arrangement for splitting the cost is private between the residents.

Moving house

The garden-waste subscription is not transferable. Leave the bin at the registered address. If your new home is eligible and you want the service there, a new subscription is required.

No room for a green wheelie bin?

Angus can assess the property and may consider another storage location, a different container or branded compostable paper sacks for the subscription fee.

Angus Missed Bin: Check These Things Before Reporting It

Angus maintains a live list of collection rounds it already knows it has missed. Check that list before sending a report because the council may already have provided a revised instruction for your street.

  1. Check your property calendar.
Make sure the specific bin or caddy was actually scheduled.
  2. Confirm it was out by 7am.
Angus states that collection vehicles may have camera footage available when presentation timing is checked.
  3. Look for a contamination tag.
A tagged bin that contains incorrect material is not treated in the same way as a genuine missed collection.
  4. Check the council’s known-missed list.
Do not submit another report when your road or round is already listed with an instruction.
  5. Wait until after 4:30pm.
The household missed-bin form should not be used before this point on the scheduled day.
  6. Report within two working days.
Angus says reports made later than this are not eligible through the normal missed-bin process.

What happens after an eligible report?

Town household Angus aims to return within two working days.
Rural household Angus aims to return within three working days.
Operational disruption A return may not always be possible before the next scheduled collection.
Forgot to put it out? Angus says you will normally have to wait until the next scheduled collection rather than report it as a missed bin.

White-Sack Properties: A Specific Angus Collection Arrangement

Some Angus households receive authorised white sacks instead of a purple general-waste wheelie bin, for example where there is not enough space for a standard container.

Annual supply

The council supplies an amount intended to give capacity equivalent to the normal wheeled-bin service.

Need additional sacks?

Extra sacks are not an automatic entitlement. Submit an enquiry and Angus will consider the request under its extra-bin policy.

A normal purple-bin household should not treat the white-sack arrangement as permission to leave ordinary side waste beside its bin.

Angus Assisted Collection / Wheelout Service

An assisted collection means the crew takes a bin from an agreed point within the property’s grounds, empties it and returns it. You may qualify if age or a medical condition makes normal presentation difficult and there is no able-bodied person in the household who can put the bins out.

Property assessment

Angus may assess whether the bin can be moved safely from its storage point to the collection vehicle.

Food caddies

Assisted collection is available for food-waste caddies. The caddy should be left somewhere the crew can identify from the kerbside.

Two-year review

The council reviews assisted arrangements every two years and asks residents to report relevant changes in circumstances.

If the route is unsuitable for wheeling a standard bin, the council may consider an alternative sack arrangement.

Missing, Damaged, Replacement and Extra Angus Bins

Missing bin

First check nearby properties because containers can become mixed up after collection. If it is still missing, Angus provides an online report route and says a replacement should normally be delivered within ten working days.

Damaged bin

Minor damage may not require replacement. For significant cracks or damage to the lid, wheels or axle, report the problem. Angus may inspect the container to decide how the damage occurred.

Replacement size Current charge where resident-caused damage applies Included
240 litre £37.80 VAT and delivery
140 litre £31.80 VAT and delivery

Need extra capacity?

Extra grey or blue recycling capacity, or another food caddy, can be requested where needed. Additional non-recyclable capacity is assessed rather than automatically issued.

Angus may consider an extra residual bin because of household size or a medical condition that creates additional waste, provided the household is making full use of recycling and food-waste services available to it. Approved extra-bin circumstances are reviewed every two years.

Angus Bulky Waste / Special Uplift 2026

Angus Council can collect up to 20 accepted bulky household items in one special uplift. The current charge is £37.30 for up to three items, with each additional item costing £11.50.

Booking

Special uplifts are arranged online. Angus says a collection can be scheduled up to four weeks ahead and is usually carried out within five working days of payment.

Presentation

Put the booked items outside and as close to the kerbside as practical by 7am. There must be clear access.

Crews do not enter buildings

Items cannot be collected from inside houses, garages or sheds. Move accepted items to the agreed outside collection point first.

Useful Angus item-count rules

  • Up to three chairs can count as one item.
  • A bed base, mattress and headboard together count as one item.
  • A qualifying dismantled shed up to the council’s stated size limit counts as three items.
  • A dismantled trampoline counts as three items.
  • Up to three black refuse bags can be included as one listed category.

Fridges and freezers

Remove food, food residue and stagnant water before collection. A commercial-style fridge or freezer being used domestically may require a photograph when you arrange the uplift.

Item not listed?

Angus may request a description and up to three photographs to assess the item and access. Very heavy items and hazardous materials such as asbestos, fluorescent tubes and gas bottles do not use the ordinary household special-uplift route.

Cancellation: the council asks residents to contact it by 3pm on the day before the scheduled uplift if the booking needs to be cancelled.

Angus Household Waste Recycling Centres

Angus currently lists five household recycling centres: Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar and Montrose. Check the individual centre page before travelling because accepted material, vehicle rules and operating arrangements can change.

Do you need to book?

Household car

A standard car carrying household waste does not normally need an advance recycling-centre booking.

Van, pick-up or trailer

All vans, pick-ups and trailers must be pre-booked. Angus also requires a booking for liveried vehicles.

Angus says household waste brought in one of these vehicle types does not attract a booking charge simply because the vehicle needs to be booked. Commercial waste follows separate rules.

2026 Recycling-Centre Sorting Changes

Angus tested a sorting station at Forfar Recycling Centre to help residents separate recyclable material from bags and containers before using the non-recyclable skip.

The council reported that 7.74 tonnes of recyclable material were diverted during the five-month Forfar trial. Its current recycling-centre guidance says the sorting approach is due to extend to Montrose from 28 September 2026, with other Angus centres following over the next year or so.

Before visiting: separate obvious recyclables at home. If you arrive with waste in bags or boxes at a site using the sorting system, you may be asked to open them and separate recyclable items.

What Happens to Angus Household Waste After Collection?

Grey recycling

Plastic containers, cans and cartons are sorted and sent for reprocessing into new materials.

Blue paper and card

Paper and cardboard are kept in their separate stream for reprocessing into new paper and card products.

Food waste

Collected food is processed through anaerobic digestion, producing useful energy and material for agricultural use.

Garden waste

Green waste is composted. Angus also makes soil enhancer available at selected recycling centres while supplies are available.

General waste

Non-recyclable household waste is sent through the council’s residual-waste treatment route rather than being suitable for household recycling streams.

Glass

Glass collected separately at recycling points can be sorted more effectively for high-quality recycling into new glass products.

Householders can currently collect up to three bags of Angus soil enhancer using their own bags at Arbroath, Forfar and Montrose recycling centres, subject to availability and site rules.

Christmas, New Year and Winter Collection Checks

Do not move an ordinary household collection automatically because a public holiday falls near your bin day. Use the property calendar and any current Angus Council service notice.

Household bins

Use the exact address calendar for the dates shown against purple, grey, blue and food-waste collections.

Garden waste

The current published garden service has a winter pause beginning 27 November 2026 and continuing into February 2027.

A complete Christmas 2026 / New Year 2027 household replacement timetable was not identified in the current Angus waste guidance used for this refresh. Do not reuse a previous year’s festive timetable.
