Southend-on-Sea Bin Collection Days: Calendar, Bin Types & What Goes Out This Week
Southend-on-Sea now uses a split household collection system. For most suitable properties, the pink-lid and blue-lid recycling bins alternate, the black non-recyclable bin is collected fortnightly, and the blue food-waste container is collected every week.
Your exact day still depends on your property. Start with the official collection-day service or Southend Waste app rather than copying a neighbour’s routine, especially if you live in a flat, use sacks or have a garden-waste subscription.
Southend Bin Collection: Fast Answer
Use Southend-on-Sea City Council’s collection-day page or the Southend Waste app for your exact property. Standard wheelie-bin households normally have weekly food waste, a fortnightly black bin and alternating pink-lid and blue-lid recycling collections.
Put scheduled recycling and non-recyclable waste on the inside edge of your property by 7am. Collections are normally carried out between 7am and 6pm, although operational delays can make them later.

How to Check Your Southend-on-Sea Bin Collection Day
The fastest reliable route is property-specific. Southend’s current system uses different waste streams on different weeks, so knowing that “Thursday is bin day” is not enough. You also need to know which container is due.
-
Open the official collection-day page.
Use Southend-on-Sea City Council’s current waste calendar rather than an old screenshot or neighbourhood list. -
Enter the property details requested.
Use the exact home whose collection you are checking. -
Read the date and bin type together.
Record “pink-lid recycling — Tuesday” rather than saving only the weekday. -
Check the next week as well.
Pink and blue recycling alternate, while the black bin follows its own fortnightly cycle and food waste runs weekly. -
Use the Southend Waste app for reminders.
The app can show upcoming household collections and notify you which containers are due.
Southend-on-Sea Collection Calendar: How the Cycle Works
The majority of suitable homes moved to the newer wheelie-bin system from October 2025. The important change is that household recycling is split between two bins rather than being treated as one mixed weekly stream.
| Container | Main use | Typical frequency | Important point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pink-lid bin | Plastic packaging, glass, cans and cartons | Every two weeks | Alternates with blue-lid recycling |
| Blue-lid bin | Clean and dry paper and card | Every two weeks | Alternates with pink-lid recycling |
| Black-lid bin | Non-recyclable household waste | Every two weeks | Runs on a separate collection vehicle |
| Blue food bin | Cooked and uncooked food | Weekly | Goes out every week |
| Green garden bin | Accepted garden waste | Weekly subscription service | May be on a different day |
Southend Bin Types: Pink, Blue, Black, Food and Green
Mixed containers
Use for accepted plastic packaging, glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, foil and food or drink cartons.
Paper & card
Use for dry, clean paper and cardboard. Flatten boxes to save space.
Non-recyclable waste
Use for household rubbish that cannot go through the council’s recycling or food-waste services.
Food waste
Use the small kitchen caddy first, then place tied compostable liners into the larger outdoor food-waste bin.
What Goes in Each Southend Bin?

Where and When to Put Your Bins Out
Ready by 7am
Put the scheduled containers at the collection point by 7am on collection day.
Use the property edge
Bins should normally be visible and accessible on the inside edge of the property, not blocking the public footpath.
Do not rely on usual vehicle time
Different collection vehicles may arrive at different times, even when several waste streams are due on the same day.
If practical, bins can be made ready the evening before. The council says collection rounds are expected between 7am and 6pm, although operational reasons can result in later collection.
Southend Missed Bin: When and How to Report It
Do not report a missed bin simply because another container has already been emptied. Pink/blue recycling and the black bin can be collected by different vehicles at different times.
-
Check your calendar first.
Confirm that the exact bin or sack was actually scheduled for that property. -
Confirm it was ready by 7am.
The container should have been visible and accessible at the correct collection point. -
Check for a tag.
A tag may explain contamination, presentation or another reason the crew did not empty it. -
Wait until after 6pm.
The council asks residents to wait until the collection day has finished before reporting the miss. -
Report within two working days.
A missed collection must be submitted inside the council’s reporting window.
Is it genuinely missed?
Flats, Communal Bins and Southend Sack Collections
Not every Southend household uses the standard three-wheelie-bin arrangement. A small number of properties that cannot accommodate wheelie bins because of access or storage restrictions remain on loose-sack collections.
Loose-sack properties
These can use pink recycling sacks, a blue paper/card box and resident-provided black refuse sacks. Standard sack collections are normally weekly.
Purpose-built flats
Blocks with communal bins normally receive a weekly recycling and waste collection, which can differ from nearby houses.
Managing agent issues
For communal storage problems, missing communal containers or dumped bulky items, contact the managing agent or housing company first where appropriate.
Missing Bin, New Home or Need a Larger Bin?
Missing standard household bins
New residents who do not have the expected set of containers can request a new-home recycling kit. The council also provides a route to request missing or replacement standard bins.
Standard replacement requests can include the blue food container/caddy, pink-lid recycling bin, blue-lid recycling bin and black household-waste bin.
180 litres is not enough
Qualifying households can apply for larger 240-litre pink, blue or black bins. Eligibility can include six or more permanent occupants, multiple children in nappies, incontinence waste, medical waste needs or another special requirement.
Cannot Move Your Bin to the Collection Point?
Southend offers an assisted-collection route for residents who have difficulty moving their bins, sacks or containers. Eligibility is assessed individually.
You may qualify if
- you are elderly or infirm;
- you have a certified short- or long-term medical condition; or
- you are registered with a disability.
Household support also matters
The council also requires that there is no one aged 16 or over living with you who can put the containers out.
The agreed collection location must remain outside the home. Southend states that the service cannot be provided to blocks of flats or properties using communal bin-storage facilities.
Southend Garden Waste Collection
Garden waste is a separate paid service. It provides weekly collection for 12 months from the date you join, although the service is suspended for three weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.
12-month subscription
£68.50 at the current published council price.
240-litre garden bin
£40 to purchase for a new wheelie-bin customer.
Compostable sacks
£11 for a roll of 10 at the current published price.
New wheelie-bin customers need both the garden bin and a subscription before collections can take place. An additional garden bin also needs its own additional subscription.
Sofas, Mattresses and Other Bulky Household Waste
Each household can currently book one free bulky-waste collection per service year, subject to available slots. The service year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
Free allocation
Up to five individual items or one qualifying combination item can be included in the annual free booking.
Additional paid booking
Current published prices are £15 for one item, £40 for up to three items and £60 for up to five items.
Collection-day rule
Booked bulky items must be accessible at the agreed property-edge location by 7am.
Textiles and Small Electricals Have Separate Bookable Collections
Textiles
Southend offers a free monthly bookable collection for suitable clothing and household textiles using the council’s clear textile sacks.
Small electrical items
A free monthly bookable collection is available for small electricals. Residents can place accepted items in a carrier bag after removing batteries where required.
Southend Household Waste Recycling Centres

Bank Holidays and Revised Southend Collection Days
Do not assume that every bank holiday automatically moves the collection by one day. Southend publishes revised collection information when changes apply.
Check before bin night
Use the collection-day page or app close to the holiday rather than relying on last year’s calendar.
Different vehicles still apply
A recycling stream and black-bin collection may be serviced at different times even on the revised day.
Garden waste has its own schedule
The paid garden service can have separate seasonal and festive arrangements.

Southend-on-Sea Bin Collection FAQs
How do I check my Southend-on-Sea bin collection day?
Use Southend-on-Sea City Council’s collection-day page or Southend Waste app for the exact property. Check both the date and the container due because different waste streams run on different cycles.
What time should I put my bins out in Southend?
Put scheduled recycling and non-recyclable waste on the inside edge of the property by 7am on collection day.
What goes in the pink-lid bin?
The pink-lid bin is for accepted mixed containers including plastic packaging, glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, foil and food or drink cartons. Paper and cardboard belong in the blue-lid bin.
What goes in the blue-lid bin?
The blue-lid bin is for clean, dry paper and cardboard. Keep these materials loose and flatten boxes to create more space.
How often is the Southend black bin collected?
For standard wheelie-bin households, the black-lid non-recyclable waste bin is normally collected every two weeks. Sack and communal properties can follow different arrangements.
How often is food waste collected in Southend?
Household food waste is collected weekly using the larger blue outdoor food-waste container.
When can I report a missed Southend bin?
First confirm the bin was due and properly presented by 7am. Wait until after 6pm on collection day and report an eligible missed collection within two working days of the scheduled collection.
Do Southend flats use the same collection timetable as houses?
Not always. Blocks using communal bins normally receive weekly recycling and waste collections, and their collection day can differ from nearby houses.
How much is Southend garden waste collection?
The council currently lists a 12-month garden-waste subscription at £68.50. A new 240-litre garden bin is currently £40, while a roll of 10 garden-waste sacks is £11. Check the live council page before paying because prices can change.
Where are Southend’s household recycling centres?
The two council-listed HWRCs are Stock Road, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 5QF and Leigh Marshes, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 2ET.
Before the Bins Go Out
Start with the property calendar, not a generic postcode timetable. Confirm the exact container due, have it at the inside edge of the property by 7am and keep recycling correctly sorted.
If a scheduled container remains full, wait until the collection day has finished, check for a rejection tag and then use the official missed-collection route within two working days.
