South Tyneside Bin Collection 2026: Days, Grey & Blue Bins

South Tyneside • North East England • 2026 resident guide

Know Whether It Is Grey or Blue Bin Week Before 7:30am

South Tyneside normally collects household rubbish one week and recycling the next, on the same weekday. The exact date still belongs to your property, so check before relying on an old reminder.

This guide explains collection dates, the blue-bin caddy, rejected recycling, missed-bin deadlines, larger bins, garden waste, assisted collections, bulky items and the Recycling Village.

Grey bin: fortnightly Blue bin: fortnightly Same normal weekday Ready by 7:30am Missed report: next working day
Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not South Tyneside Council and cannot access Council collection records, take payments or arrange collections. Official action links are placed inside the relevant sections below.

South Tyneside Bin Collection 2026: Quick Answer

South Tyneside normally uses an alternate-week collection. Household refuse is collected one week and household recycling the following week.

The normal weekday is the same for both services. Put the correct Council bin at the kerbside by 7:30am and return it within the property boundary on the same day after collection.

Service Normal frequency Container Key resident rule
Household rubbish Fortnightly Grey refuse bin No routine side waste; one approved refuse bin normally emptied.
Dry recycling Fortnightly Blue bin + inner paper caddy where supplied Keep paper in the caddy and contamination out of the main recycling.
Garden waste Fortnightly during active subscribed season Green garden bin Separate paid/subscribed service; confirm current charge live.
Bulky household items Booked No wheelie bin Current online price is £30 for up to eight listed items.

Does South Tyneside Council Actually Collect Your Bins?

South Tyneside Council’s current service portal identifies the borough’s principal towns and villages as South Shields, Hebburn, Jarrow, Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn.

Do not identify the council from an NE or SR postcode district alone. Postcode geography and council boundaries are not the same thing.

Especially important around Sunderland

Some third-party bin websites currently mix up Sunderland and South Tyneside. Sunderland City Council is a separate waste authority.

If the property is close to the boundary, use the postcode-to-council route before following the grey/blue-bin instructions on this page.

Why this matters

  • Bin colours differ between neighbouring councils.
  • Set-out times differ.
  • Garden-waste charges differ.
  • Missed-bin deadlines differ.
  • HWRC permits and booking rules differ.

How to Check Your South Tyneside Bin Collection Date

Use the address-specific Council collection lookup for questions such as “South Tyneside bin collection today”, “what bin is it this week?” or “when is my next blue bin?”

  1. Open the official bin-date service.
Start with the Council rather than an old screenshot, third-party calendar or neighbour’s memory.
  2. Enter the requested address information.
Select the exact property where an address list appears.
  3. Check the normal weekday.
Refuse and recycling normally use the same weekday.
  4. Check which stream is due.
One week is refuse; the next week is recycling.
  5. Recheck around holidays.
Bank Holiday and Christmas arrangements can shift the date.

Address missing from Council eServices?

Do not choose a neighbour’s address simply to make the form work.

South Tyneside’s current eServices help page says missing addresses can be reported to:

  • Phone: 0191 427 7000
  • Email: customerhelp@southtyneside.gov.uk
Check your exact bin date Confirm both the weekday and which service is due before putting anything out.
Check official South Tyneside bin dates

Is It Grey Bin Week or Blue Bin Week?

Grey week

Present the grey household refuse bin for non-recyclable household rubbish.

Blue week

Present the blue recycling bin with the paper caddy correctly loaded where your property has one.

The normal weekday stays the same. South Tyneside alternates the waste stream rather than assigning ordinary rubbish and recycling two unrelated weekdays.

Why an old colour reminder can become wrong

  • Bank Holiday weeks may move collections.
  • Christmas can use special arrangements.
  • Operational disruption can affect the sequence.
  • A trial property may use a different recycling setup.

South Tyneside Bin Set-Out Time: 7:30am

Refuse and recycling bins must be at the kerbside by 7:30am.

Before collection

  • Check the correct colour/service.
  • Present the bin at the kerbside.
  • Use a point the collection vehicle can safely reach.
  • Do not overload it by volume or weight.
  • Remove recycling contamination.
  • Do not leave routine refuse bags beside the grey bin.

After collection

Take the container back inside the property boundary on the same collection day.

What if I put it out after 7:30am?

If the crew has already passed and the round record shows the bin was not presented, the Council does not treat it as its missed collection and does not have to return.

How can the Council check?

The published collection policy says vehicle records, including onboard CCTV, can support investigation of disputes about whether a bin was presented when the crew attended.

South Tyneside Grey Bin: Standard Capacity and Rubbish Rules

The standard household refuse capacity referenced in South Tyneside’s policy is 240 litres.

Use the grey bin for ordinary domestic rubbish that cannot be recycled or handled through another appropriate Council route.

Keep inappropriate heavy waste out

  • Soil
  • Rubble
  • Construction material
  • Heavy DIY waste
  • Other material that makes the bin unsafe for the lifting equipment

Too heavy or overfilled?

A wheelie bin can be rejected if it is overloaded by either weight or volume.

The crew only empties a bin when it can be handled safely.

Can I put a second grey bin out?

No as a normal household arrangement. Council policy provides one bin per waste stream.

If a household genuinely cannot manage with standard capacity, use the larger-bin or medical-capacity assessment rather than presenting an additional unauthorised refuse bin.

South Tyneside Blue Recycling Bin: Detailed Sorting Guide

South Tyneside’s recycling processing specification identifies the main co-mingled household stream as the following materials.

Main blue-bin recycling

  • Glass bottles
  • Glass jars
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic pots
  • Plastic tubs
  • Plastic trays
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminium foil
  • Food and drink cartons such as Tetra Pak-type cartons
  • Food tins
  • Drink cans
  • Empty aerosols

Paper is handled differently

Newspaper and designated paper material are kept separately in the inner recycling caddy where that system is supplied.

Preparation

  • Empty bottles, jars, tins and containers.
  • Keep recycling reasonably clean.
  • Do not mix ordinary rubbish into recycling.
  • Use the paper caddy rather than mixing its listed paper into the wrong part of the system.
  • Do not add DIY or soil waste.

Plastic film and carrier bags

Do not assume soft plastic is accepted in the blue bin in 2026.

Under England’s national Simpler Recycling timetable, plastic film packaging and plastic bags are not required in household plastic recycling until 31 March 2027.

When one item is uncertain

Check the Council’s current recycling A–Z instead of guessing. Putting an excluded item into the recycling bin can cause the whole container to be rejected.

South Tyneside Blue-Bin Paper Caddy

South Tyneside supplies the recycling caddy free to residents.

The current Council caddy page lists

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Telephone directories
  • Yellow Pages-type directories
  • Envelopes
  • Junk mail
  • Printed paper

Why is the paper separated?

The inner caddy keeps the designated paper/fibre stream separate from the co-mingled bottles, containers, glass and packaging in the main recycling container.

Missing caddy?

At this 16 August 2026 review, the official caddy page was displaying “This form is currently unavailable.”

If it still shows that notice, use Customer Services rather than abandoning the request.

Need a free recycling caddy? Try the current request page. If it remains unavailable, call 0191 427 7000.
Request a South Tyneside blue-bin caddy

Whitburn and Marsden Blue Bin With a Red Lid

A blue recycling bin with a red lid is a special Whitburn/Marsden trial container. Do not order a standard blue bin as an automatic replacement.

Need a replacement?

The Council’s live replacement-bin service specifically says residents in the Whitburn and Marsden trial area should call:

0191 427 7000

Why keep this separate?

Trial households can have different sorting/container arrangements. Follow the instructions issued to your trial property instead of an older borough-wide leaflet.

South Tyneside Food Waste Collection in 2026: Current Status Needs Address-Level Confirmation

England’s Simpler Recycling household rules changed on 31 March 2026. By default, waste collection authorities must provide separate weekly household food-waste collection unless a specific transitional arrangement gives that authority a later implementation date.

South Tyneside’s publicly indexed domestic collection policy is older and still describes household food-waste proposals as being progressed.

During this 16 August 2026 audit, I could not verify from the Council’s accessible current pages:

  • A South Tyneside-wide weekly household food-waste start date;
  • The exact food-caddy colours/sizes for every property;
  • A complete current address rollout list; or
  • Whether South Tyneside is operating under a specific transitional arrangement.

Therefore, do not invent a food-caddy routine from another council.

If South Tyneside has supplied your property with caddies, liners, a new calendar or a service letter, follow those current address-specific instructions.

What should this article do when the Council publishes a clear rollout page?

Update this section immediately with:

  • Start date by property type;
  • Indoor and outdoor container sizes;
  • Weekly collection weekday;
  • Accepted food list;
  • Liner rules;
  • Flats/communal arrangements;
  • Replacement caddy route; and
  • Missed-food-waste reporting procedure.

South Tyneside Green Garden Waste Collection

Green garden waste is a separate subscription service and is not part of the normal grey/blue alternate-week household cycle.

South Tyneside policy describes subscribed garden bins as being emptied fortnightly during the garden-waste season.

Typical domestic garden material

  • Grass cuttings
  • Leaves
  • Plants
  • Hedge clippings
  • Suitable small twigs and branches
  • Normal domestic garden trimmings

Keep unsuitable material out

  • Household rubbish
  • Plastic bags
  • Heavy DIY material
  • Rubble
  • Material that makes the green bin unsafe to lift

Can I subscribe for multiple garden bins?

Yes. Garden waste is the explicit exception to South Tyneside’s normal one-bin-per-waste-stream policy; subscribers can pay for more than one garden bin to be emptied during the service season.

How much is the 2026 subscription?

A current price was not exposed in the accessible official Green Waste page during this audit.

Do not publish an old fee simply because it still appears on a third-party page. Check the amount displayed by the live Council transaction before payment.

Green bin rejected?

A contaminated or dangerously overloaded garden bin can be left. Remove incorrect/heavy material before the next qualifying collection.

Want to join or manage garden waste? Use the live Council service and verify the current charge during the transaction.

South Tyneside Missed Bin: Next-Working-Day Reporting Deadline

Report a genuine missed wheelie bin by the end of the next working day after it was due.

Do not wait several days because the reporting window is short.

Before reporting, confirm all of these

  • The correct bin was due.
  • It was at the kerbside by 7:30am.
  • The vehicle could access it.
  • It was not dangerously overloaded.
  • It was not too heavy.
  • The recycling or garden bin was not contaminated.
  • The collection was not moved because of an announced Bank Holiday arrangement.

Bin was put out late?

If collection records show the bin was not presented before the crew arrived, the Council does not treat it as its missed collection and does not have to return.

Valid Council miss

The current eService says a reported qualifying bin will be arranged for emptying as soon as possible.

The published collection policy also states that if records confirm a bin was presented on time, the Council will return as soon as possible, with Monday excluded from those return arrangements.

What if the online form is unavailable?

At this review on 16 August 2026, the Council’s missed-bin page was displaying “This form is currently unavailable.”

Do not allow the next-working-day reporting deadline to expire while waiting for the form to return.

Why Was My South Tyneside Bin Left Full?

Problem Possible reason What to do
Wrong colour presented Grey bin on recycling week or blue bin on refuse week. Check the alternate-week cycle and present it next correct date.
Bin put out after 7:30am Crew may have recorded it as not presented. Store/manage the waste until the next scheduled collection or use an appropriate disposal route.
Grey bin too heavy Soil, DIY material or excessive weight. Remove heavy material before the next collection.
Bin overfilled Unsafe by volume. Reduce the contents to a manageable amount.
Blue bin tagged Recycling contamination. Remove the incorrect item and wait for the next scheduled recycling day.
Green bin left Contamination, overloading or subscription/service issue. Correct the problem and verify garden service status.
Rural bin not emptied Collection point may not have been safely accessible. Use the safest nearest point to the highway or ask the Council to review the arrangement.

Recycling Contamination: Why South Tyneside Takes It Seriously

South Tyneside’s latest published performance update says 22.56% of recycling-bin waste was contaminated during 2024/25.

That makes contamination one of the most useful resident problems for this guide to solve.

What happens when a recycling bin is contaminated?

  • The crew can reject the container.
  • A notice can be left explaining the problem.
  • The householder must remove the contamination.
  • The corrected recycling bin is normally emptied on its next scheduled recycling collection.

Can I get it emptied sooner?

The published policy says a special collection of a contaminated bin can be arranged at a charge.

Repeated contamination

Repeated contamination can escalate beyond a warning sticker.

Two separate contamination incidents within a rolling 12-month period can lead into South Tyneside’s formal enforcement process, including use of a Section 46 notice and potential later penalties/removal.

Persistent breaches

After further contamination and the Council’s written-agreement stage, the policy allows the recycling container to be removed for 12 months.

After that period, the resident can be required to pay for a replacement recycling bin.

Can You Leave Extra Bags Beside a South Tyneside Grey Bin?

No. South Tyneside does not routinely collect additional refuse placed beside the household refuse bin.

Grey bin full?

  • Separate all accepted recycling first.
  • Do not overload the bin.
  • Store manageable excess waste until the next collection.
  • Use the Recycling Village for suitable household waste.
  • Ask for a larger-bin assessment if the excess is an ongoing qualifying need.

More recycling than fits?

The published policy advises residents to:

  • Store the material until the blue bin is empty;
  • Use a Council recycling/bring site; or
  • Use the Recycling Village.

Persistent side waste

South Tyneside uses a stepped response and can ultimately use littering, fly-tipping or other enforcement powers where inappropriate side waste continues.

South Tyneside 360-Litre Larger Bin: Eligibility

A household that cannot reasonably manage with the standard 240-litre capacity can ask for an assessment.

South Tyneside defines a larger household as five or more people permanently living at the property.

A 360-litre refuse and/or recycling capacity can be considered for a household of five or more people or where another demonstrable need exists.

Application does not guarantee approval

The Council needs to be satisfied the larger capacity is warranted. An officer can contact or visit the household as part of the assessment.

Is there a charge?

A new exchange bin is chargeable under the published policy.

Where the resident accepts a suitable used bin and Council stock is available, the policy says it can be supplied free.

Can the larger bin be reviewed later?

Yes. South Tyneside periodically reviews households that receive increased capacity.

Extra capacity does not mean multiple normal grey bins can be put out. The normal policy remains one approved container per waste stream, except subscribed garden waste.

Medical Need: Free Additional Household Waste Capacity

A medical condition can sometimes create unavoidable additional residual or recyclable household waste.

What evidence is needed?

South Tyneside asks for information from a medical professional such as a GP or nurse explaining:

  • The type of additional waste produced;
  • Whether the waste is residual or recyclable; and
  • How long the additional requirement is expected to continue.

What happens next?

  1. Council reviews the evidence.
It can contact the resident or representative for more information.
  2. The waste need is assessed.
External advice can be sought if required.
  3. A suitable capacity solution is agreed.
The aim is to manage unavoidable extra domestic waste appropriately.
  4. Approved additional capacity is free.
The arrangement can be reviewed periodically.

This policy concerns additional ordinary residual/recycling capacity arising from a medical condition. Sharps, infectious clinical waste and medicines may need specialist healthcare/Council disposal routes instead.

South Tyneside Assisted Bin Collection

Assisted collection is available for residents unable to transport wheelie bins to the normal collection point because of ill health, infirmity or disability.

The household must not have another occupant aged 16 or over who is able to move the bins.

Assessment

  • Submit an assisted-collection request.
  • Applications are considered on individual circumstances.
  • The Council can use a telephone assessment or home visit.
  • A suitable collection point is agreed.

Once approved

The collection operative:

  1. Collects the wheelie bin from the agreed location;
  2. Empties it into the vehicle; and
  3. Returns the bin to the same agreed location.

Change in circumstances

Tell the Council if the household no longer requires assistance. The assisted-collection register is reviewed periodically.

South Tyneside Flats and Communal Bin Collections

Multiple-occupancy properties can use appropriately sized shared refuse and recycling containers instead of standard individual household bins.

For residents

  • Follow the label on the communal container.
  • Do not put household rubbish into shared recycling.
  • Keep access to the bin store clear.
  • Do not leave furniture beside communal containers.
  • Do not assume a nearby house uses the same service.

Contamination problem

The Council says it will initially work with residents to improve recycling separation at communal properties.

Where effective segregation cannot be achieved, South Tyneside can use enforcement powers or choose to remove communal recycling provision where appropriate.

Storage/access issue

Properties with genuine access or bin-storage constraints are considered case-by-case.

Rural South Tyneside Properties and Unmetalled Roads

Rural properties should place bins at the safest and nearest suitable point to the highway.

Collection vehicles will not drive along an unmetalled road or a road without a suitable hard surface simply to reach a property.

Unsure where the collection point should be?

Contact the Council. A telephone discussion or home visit can be used to agree a safe practical arrangement.

South Tyneside Replacement Bins: Important Charges and Exceptions

The live request service covers replacement:

  • Grey household bins
  • Blue recycling bins
  • Green garden bins

Lost, stolen or household-damaged bin

A brand-new replacement can be chargeable.

Can a replacement be free?

The published policy says a lost, stolen or damaged container can be supplied free where the resident accepts a suitable used bin and Council stock is available.

Collection crew damaged it?

Bins damaged by the collection process should be replaced free of charge.

One refuse-bin rule

The current request service states that a property is normally entitled to one refuse bin and the crew empties one refuse bin per property.

Whitburn/Marsden trial exception

For a blue recycling bin with a red lid, call 0191 427 7000 instead of selecting a standard blue replacement.

£3.80 redelivery charge

The current form says that where a signed delivery has been arranged but nobody answers, a £3.80 redelivery charge must be paid before another delivery is made.

Need a replacement bin? Choose the correct colour and remember that the Whitburn/Marsden red-lid container uses the phone route.

Moving House or Into a New Build in South Tyneside

Moving out

Leave the Council wheelie bins and recycling caddy at the property. They remain Council property and are intended for the next occupier.

Moved into an existing property without bins?

The published policy allows a charge where a new owner, tenant or landlord finds bins missing from an existing property.

New development

For new-build properties, the cost of providing refuse, recycling and garden containers can be transferred to the developer where applicable.

Check with the builder/site manager before paying for a container that should form part of the development’s bin provision.

Number your bins

South Tyneside explicitly encourages residents to put the property number on their bins to make missing-container and collection queries easier to resolve.

South Tyneside Bulky Waste Collection 2026: £30 for Up to 8 Items

The current online household bulky-waste service costs £30 for up to eight listed items.

It is for domestic properties, not businesses.

Examples of the type of household items covered

  • Beds
  • Freestanding wardrobes
  • Sofas
  • Fridges
  • Freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Computers
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Other items included in the live booking list

Item is not listed?

Call 0191 427 7000. The Council says the charge can differ for an unlisted item.

Bags or boxes

Some bagged or boxed household waste may be eligible depending on the contents.

Food waste is explicitly excluded from that bag/box option. Confirm the contents with Customer Services first.

Where should items be left?

  • Within your property boundary;
  • As close to the entrance as practical;
  • Without blocking the public highway;
  • With gates unlocked where required.

Crews cannot enter the house, garage or shed to fetch booked items.

Collection time

Put items ready by 7:30am. The Council’s published collection policy says bulky collections operate between 7:30am and 5pm.

Preparation rules

  • Do not put items out far in advance.
  • Protect suitable furniture from becoming soaked.
  • Do not overfill bags.
  • Items longer than about 2 metres may be rejected.
  • Cut carpets into manageable lengths.
  • Identify the house number if items are collected from a back lane.
  • Stack booked items tidily together.
  • Only booked items are removed.
  • Unsafe/unmovable items can be left.

Changes and cancellations

Changes or cancellations must be made before 12 noon on the day before collection. After that deadline the published policy says no refund is given.

Reuse first

If furniture or an appliance is still usable, a legitimate charity/reuse route can avoid the disposal charge and keep the item in use.

Ready to book a bulky collection? Count no more than eight standard listed items and confirm any unusual object by phone first.

South Tyneside Recycling Village at Middlefields

South Tyneside’s household waste recycling centre is the Middlefields Recycling Village in South Shields.

It is the main household route for suitable extra rubbish, recycling and materials that should not be forced into kerbside containers.

Permit not needed for normal cars

The household waste permit scheme does not affect ordinary car users.

Permit required for

  • Vans
  • Pickup vehicles
  • Vehicles towing trailers

Vehicle restrictions

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight are not permitted under the household permit scheme.

Trailers longer than 3 metres are also excluded.

How the permit works

  • Permits are issued only to South Tyneside residents.
  • One permit is needed per visit.
  • Up to three permits can be requested in one application.
  • Each permit is valid during a 28-day period beginning on the date specified.

Electrical household waste

The current permit page specifically confirms acceptance at the Recycling Village of household electrical waste such as:

  • Fridges
  • Televisions
  • Computer monitors

Chemicals, asbestos and creosote

The permit information sends chemical wastes including asbestos, creosote and other chemicals to the separate Middlefields Waste Transfer Station advice route rather than treating them as normal Recycling Village loads.

Call 0191 427 7000 before transporting unusual or hazardous material.

Permit form currently unavailable

At this 16 August 2026 review, the household-waste-permit page was displaying “This form is currently unavailable.”

If using a van, pickup or trailer while that notice remains, contact Customer Services before travelling.

2026 site-operation update

A new household waste recycling-centre operating contract covering Middlefields began from 1 April 2026. That is another reason to check live opening, access and booking arrangements rather than preserving an old timetable indefinitely.

Using a van, pickup or trailer? Check the live permit status and vehicle rules before loading the vehicle.

Batteries, Vapes and Electrical Items: Keep Them Out of Household Bins

Electrical equipment and batteries should use an appropriate electrical/battery recycling route rather than being hidden inside grey refuse or mixed household recycling.

Examples needing a separate route

  • Vapes
  • Mobile phones
  • Power banks
  • Laptops
  • Small electrical appliances
  • Devices containing rechargeable lithium batteries

Batteries can create serious fires when crushed in collection vehicles and waste-processing equipment.

Larger electrical items

Suitable domestic electrical items can use the Recycling Village or, where listed, the paid bulky-waste service.

What Happens to South Tyneside Rubbish and Recycling?

Blue-bin recycling

Collected recycling is transferred and processed through the regional materials-recovery system so glass, plastics, cardboard, metals, cartons and other accepted streams can be separated for recycling.

Residual rubbish

South Tyneside’s published waste strategy states that the majority of residual household waste is sent to Teesside for energy recovery.

The Council’s latest performance reporting says more than 95% of this waste is not landfilled but instead goes to a specialist waste-to-energy plant.

Energy recovery is not a substitute for correct recycling. Keeping recyclable material out of the grey bin reduces residual waste and improves resource recovery.

South Tyneside Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collections

South Tyneside’s published collection policy says collections may take place one day later during a Bank Holiday week.

Example

A Friday collection may move to Saturday during an affected week.

Do not publish “always one day later” as a permanent rule. The Council can make exceptions.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas can use separately advertised collection arrangements.

Do not reuse Christmas 2025/New Year 2026 dates as Christmas 2026/New Year 2027 dates unless the Council confirms them again.

Holiday checklist

  1. Recheck the exact collection date.
Do not rely on the normal weekday alone.
  2. Confirm grey or blue.
A changed date can make an old alternating reminder misleading.
  3. Update phone reminders temporarily.
Return to the normal schedule only after verifying it has resumed.

South Tyneside Bin Collection FAQs

How do I check my South Tyneside bin collection day?

Use South Tyneside Council’s address-specific bin collection date service and confirm both the normal weekday and whether grey refuse or blue recycling is due.

What time should South Tyneside bins be put out?

Refuse and recycling bins should normally be presented at the kerbside by 7:30am on collection day.

How often is the South Tyneside grey bin collected?

Household refuse is normally collected every two weeks, alternating with the blue recycling collection.

How often is the South Tyneside blue bin collected?

Blue recycling is normally collected every two weeks on the alternate week from grey household rubbish.

Are grey and blue bins collected on the same weekday?

Normally yes. South Tyneside’s collection policy says refuse and recycling use the same weekday, with the waste stream changing each week.

What is the normal South Tyneside grey-bin capacity?

The Council’s published policy uses a 240-litre standard household refuse bin.

What can go in a South Tyneside blue recycling bin?

The main recycling stream includes glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, cardboard, aluminium foil, cartons, tins, cans and empty aerosols. Designated newspapers and other paper are kept in the inner caddy where supplied.

What goes in the blue-bin caddy?

The Council lists newspapers, magazines, telephone directories, envelopes, junk mail and printed paper for its free recycling caddy.

Is a replacement recycling caddy free?

Yes. South Tyneside says it supplies recycling caddies free to residents.

Can plastic bags and wrapping go in the blue bin?

Do not assume so in 2026. Under England’s Simpler Recycling timetable, kerbside collection of plastic film packaging and plastic bags is required from 31 March 2027 rather than 2026.

What is the Whitburn and Marsden red-lid recycling bin?

Some trial-area properties use a blue recycling bin with a red lid. Residents needing a replacement should call 0191 427 7000 instead of ordering a normal blue bin online.

Does South Tyneside collect household food waste every week?

Weekly household food-waste collection is now the default national requirement from 31 March 2026 unless a council has a transitional arrangement. During this review, a current South Tyneside-wide rollout page or transition date could not be verified, so follow the service and containers currently issued to your address.

Can I leave extra rubbish bags beside my grey bin?

No. South Tyneside does not routinely collect side waste beside the household refuse bin.

What happens if my bin is too heavy?

A bin that is overloaded by weight or volume can be rejected on health and safety grounds. Remove heavy material and use the correct disposal route.

Can I have a larger South Tyneside bin?

A 360-litre refuse or recycling capacity can be considered for households with at least five permanent residents or another demonstrable need, subject to Council assessment.

Is a larger bin free?

A new exchange bin is chargeable under the published policy. If a suitable used container is available and you accept it, the Council can provide that free.

Can medical needs qualify for extra bin capacity?

Yes. Supporting information from a medical professional can be assessed, and approved additional capacity caused by a medical need is supplied free of charge.

Who can get assisted bin collection?

Residents unable to move wheelie bins because of ill health, infirmity or disability can be considered where no other household occupant aged 16 or over can assist.

When should I report a missed South Tyneside bin?

The current Council eService says a genuine missed wheelie bin must be reported by the end of the next working day after it was due.

What if the missed-bin form is unavailable?

Contact South Tyneside Customer Services on 0191 427 7000 or customerhelp@southtyneside.gov.uk within the reporting window.

Will the Council return if I put my bin out late?

Not normally. If the collection record says the bin was not presented before the crew arrived, the Council does not treat it as its missed collection.

What happens if the blue recycling bin is contaminated?

The bin can be rejected and a notice left. Remove the wrong material and present the container on the next scheduled recycling day. A chargeable special collection can also be available.

Can repeated recycling contamination lead to enforcement?

Yes. South Tyneside uses a staged process. Persistent contamination can result in formal notices and, after further breaches, removal of the recycling container for 12 months.

How much is South Tyneside bulky waste collection?

The current online household service costs £30 for up to eight listed items.

What time should bulky items be ready?

Booked items should be ready by 7:30am. The published bulky-waste policy says collections operate between 7:30am and 5pm.

When is the bulky-waste cancellation deadline?

Changes or cancellations need to be made before 12 noon on the day before the collection. After that point the published policy says no refund is given.

Can I take my Council bins when moving house?

No. South Tyneside’s wheelie bins and recycling caddies remain Council property and should stay at the address for the next occupant.

Do I pay for a replacement South Tyneside bin?

A new lost, stolen or resident-damaged replacement can be chargeable. A suitable used replacement can be free where stock is available, while collection-crew damage should be replaced free.

What is the £3.80 bin redelivery charge?

The current replacement-bin form says that if a signed delivery was arranged but nobody answers, £3.80 must be paid before the bin is redelivered.

Do I need a permit for South Tyneside Recycling Village?

You need a household waste permit if visiting in a van or pickup, or towing a trailer. Normal car users are not affected by the permit scheme.

Can a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes use the Recycling Village?

No. The household permit rules exclude vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight and trailers longer than three metres.

How many Recycling Village permits can I request?

Up to three permits can be requested in one application. One permit is needed for each visit, and each permit is valid during a 28-day period starting on the date specified.

How often is South Tyneside garden waste collected?

The published policy describes subscribed green garden bins as being collected fortnightly during the active garden-waste season.

How much is the South Tyneside garden-waste service in 2026?

A verified current fee was not visible in the accessible official service page during this review. Check the live Council transaction before paying rather than relying on an old third-party price.

Can I pay for more than one green garden bin?

Yes. Garden waste is the exception to the normal one-bin-per-waste-stream rule, so subscribers can pay for more than one green bin during the service season.

Do South Tyneside collection days change on Bank Holidays?

They may move one day later, but the Council can make exceptions. Christmas arrangements are separately advertised, so always check the live date.

What is the South Tyneside Council bins phone number?

The current eServices Customer Service number is 0191 427 7000 and the current email is customerhelp@southtyneside.gov.uk.

Reviewed 16 August 2026. This guide was rebuilt against South Tyneside Council’s current eServices, Domestic Refuse and Recycling Collection Policies, current bulky-waste service, replacement-bin service, recycling-caddy service, household-waste permit rules, recent South Tyneside waste-performance reporting, the South Tyne and Wear recycling specification, current 2026 HWRC contract information and current national Simpler Recycling requirements. Verified core rules include the 7:30am presentation time, alternate fortnightly grey/refuse and blue/recycling collections on the same weekday, 240L standard capacity, 360L larger-capacity assessment, no routine side waste, next-working-day missed-bin reporting deadline, assisted collections, medical additional capacity, Whitburn/Marsden red-lid replacement exception, £30 bulky collection for up to eight listed items, Recycling Village van/pickup/trailer permits and current Customer Service contact details. At the time of review, the Council’s missed-bin, recycling-caddy and household-waste-permit pages were displaying temporary unavailable notices. A verified current garden-waste fee was not visible through the accessible live service page, and the indexed South Tyneside information did not provide enough evidence to state the Council’s exact post-31-March-2026 household food-waste rollout or any transitional arrangement. Those points are deliberately marked for live confirmation rather than guessed.
