Check the Right Sandwell Bin Week Before You Put Anything Out
Sandwell households with normal kerbside bins now alternate grey household rubbish with the blue-lid recycling bin and blue paper/card bag. Registered food-waste collections run every week.
Your exact day can vary by property, and current delays can override the normal routine. Check the address finder first, then the weekly service update before reporting a problem.
Sandwell Bin Collection Update Today
Status snapshot checked 31 July 2026: the latest Sandwell weekly-update page retrieved for this guide showed some delays affecting grey non-recycling bins, blue-lid recycling bins and blue recycling bags.
| Service | Status at audit | Resident action |
|---|---|---|
| Grey rubbish | Some delays | Leave it available when your road is affected. |
| Blue-lid recycling | Some delays | Check the live page before reporting it missed. |
| Blue recycling bag | Some delays | Leave the bag out if Council advice says the route is delayed. |
| Food waste | Operating | Use the normal weekly collection routine. |
| Garden waste | Operating | Check your subscribed date separately. |
| Replacement bins | Long delays possible | Do not expect immediate delivery after ordering. |
For “Sandwell bin collection update today” or “update tomorrow”, reopen the Council status page. The service table can change after this guide is updated.
Sandwell says collection rounds can operate until about 5pm, and delayed crews may occasionally visit on Saturdays.
Choose the Right Sandwell Waste Action

Use missed-bin decision guideCheck the waste stream
Grey rubbish alternates with the blue-lid bin and blue bag; food waste is weekly.
See scheduleSandwell Bin Collection Dates 2026: Address First, Calendar Second
Sandwell collection dates are property-specific. The official finder needs a house number or house name and postcode.
Open the Sandwell bin-day service
Use the Council tool instead of a generic postcode chart or old leaflet screenshot.
Enter the property number or name
This helps distinguish individual addresses using the same postcode.
Enter the full postcode
Make sure the result is for the actual Sandwell property.
Check the collection stream
Write down whether the next main collection is grey rubbish or recycling.
Check garden and food separately
These do not follow exactly the same frequency as grey and blue recycling containers.
Sandwell changed collection rounds when Alternate Weekly Collections launched, and some households received a different weekday.
Sandwell Bin Collection Tomorrow: Use This 60-Second Check
Confirm tomorrow’s date
Search the exact address, not simply the WS postcode area.
Check grey or recycling week
On recycling week the blue-lid bin and blue paper/card bag are presented together.
Check live disruption
Tomorrow’s normal calendar can still be affected by an operational delay.
Ready by 5:30am
Do not rely on the lorry arriving at the same time as last week.
It uses a specialist vehicle, so leave the brown food bin out until that separate collection has happened.
Sandwell Bin Collection Schedule 2026
| Waste stream | Frequency | Container | What the resident does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-recyclable household waste | Every 2 weeks | Grey bin | Present on the grey-bin week only. |
| Glass, cans & accepted plastics | Every 2 weeks | Blue-lid bin | Present on recycling week. |
| Paper, card & cartons | Every 2 weeks | Blue recycling bag | Put beside the blue-lid bin. |
| Food waste | Weekly | Brown food bin | Register if you do not already receive the service. |
| Garden waste | Fortnightly in season | Subscribed green bin | Pay for the current-year subscription. |
Most kerbside homes still have a main collection every week—it alternates between grey household rubbish and the recycling set.
Why Sandwell’s 2026 Collection System Looks Different
Sandwell introduced Alternate Weekly Collections and Dual-Stream Recycling from 15 September 2025, ahead of the April 2026 Simpler Recycling requirements.
Household rubbish reduced
The grey-bin service changed from weekly to every other week.
Glass, cans and plastics
These remain together in the wheelie bin.
Paper and card separated
Paper, cardboard and cartons are collected separately for better-quality recycling.
Weekly separate route
Food waste is collected separately rather than filling the grey bin.
The original 2025 rollout did not change large shared recycling-bin properties in the same way as individual kerbside households.
5:30am Collection Rule, Closed Lids and Correct Position
Collection deadline
Put the due bins and bags at the edge of the property before the round can reach your road.
Property boundary
Use the edge nearest the public highway unless you have an assisted or specially agreed collection point.
Waste inside
Overfilled or overflowing bins are not normally emptied.
Grey-bin rule
Black bags and general household rubbish left beside the grey bin are not normally collected.
Traffic, roadworks, local events, weather and route changes can alter the time your street is visited.
Blue-Lid Bin and Blue Recycling Bag: Do Not Mix the Two Streams
Clean and loose
- Food tins and drink cans
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic tubs and food trays
- Glass bottles and jars
- Empty aerosol cans
- Clean foil
Recycling should remain loose so crews can inspect it.
Keep paper and card separate
- Paper
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Card
- Cardboard
- Food and drink cartons
- Plain non-metallic wrapping paper
No plastic packaging, polystyrene, tissues, greaseproof paper or glitter/foil wrapping.
Blue-bag practical problems
The bag is water-resistant
Sandwell says wet paper/card can still be recycled; the bag does not have to stay completely dry.
Protect personal data
Cross out details or shred documents; contain shredded paper in a paper envelope, paper bag or small cardboard box.
Flatten before collection
Break large clean cardboard down and remove tape, plastic and polystyrene.
Sandwell can provide additional blue recycling bags to households producing larger amounts of paper and cardboard.
What Happens if Sandwell Finds the Wrong Recycling?
Crew visually checks the bin or bag
Wrong materials or dirty recyclable items can cause rejection.
A hanger or sticker is left
This explains that the recycling could not be emptied.
Remove the wrong items
The corrected recycling normally waits for the next scheduled recycling collection.
Repeated contamination can escalate
Sandwell may send written advice or arrange help from a Recycling Support Officer.
The Council says repeated problems that continue after support may, as a last resort, lead to removal of the property’s blue-lid bin and blue recycling bag.
Weekly Food Waste: Free Capacity That Helps the Grey Bin
Sandwell’s brown food-waste collection runs every week for registered households.
- Raw and cooked meat
- Bones
- Fish and shellfish
- Eggs and eggshells
- Dairy products
- Bread and cakes
- Rice and pasta
- Beans and pulses
- Fruit and vegetables
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Hard fats such as lard
- Wet and dry pet food
- Meal leftovers
- Packaging
- Cardboard
- Foil
- Plastic film
- Glass
- Garden waste
- Animal bedding
- Liquids
Simple kitchen routine
Use any suitable indoor tub
You do not need a special kitchen caddy; even an empty ice-cream tub can work.
Line it if useful
Options include a compostable liner, old bread bag, carrier bag, newspaper or kitchen roll.
Empty into the brown outdoor bin
Transfer scraps regularly rather than letting the kitchen container overflow.
Present it every week
Put the brown bin at the edge of the property by 5:30am on your collection day.
Food containers can be washed using hot soapy water, white vinegar or disinfectant. Sandwell says the smaller kitchen caddy can also go in a dishwasher up to 60°C.
Sandwell currently warns that very high demand can delay delivery of new brown food-waste bins. Continue registering even if a new container cannot be delivered immediately.
Battery Collection: Clear Bag on Top, Never Inside the Bin
Batteries and electrical items containing batteries create serious fire risks if crushed in rubbish or recycling vehicles.
Collect ordinary household batteries
AA, AAA, 6V, 9V, C, D, button, hearing-aid, laptop and phone batteries are among the accepted household types.
Place them in a clear plastic bag
A transparent sandwich-style bag is suitable.
Put the bag on top of the blue-lid bin
Do this on the recycling collection day.
Never hide the bag inside the recycling
It must remain visible and separate for safe collection.
Vapes, electric toothbrushes, shavers, toys and other electronics can contain batteries. Do not place these devices inside ordinary household bins.
These are not accepted through the household kerbside battery bag. Use Shidas Lane or another approved recycling route.
Sandwell Missed Bin: Report Only After These Checks
Sandwell requires missed collections to be reported within two working days.
- The service was actually scheduled.
- The correct bin or bag was presented.
- It was out by 5:30am.
- The lid could close.
- The bin was not excessively heavy.
- Waste was not wedged inside.
- Recycling was clean and correctly sorted.
- No sticker/hanger explains rejection.
- The weekly update does not explain a street delay.
- Use the online form within two working days.
- If it says “round not completed”, wait—the crew is still working.
- Leave delayed bins available where Sandwell asks residents to do so.
- Roadwide failures should be checked against the weekly disruption notice.
When access is obstructed, the crew attempts to return on the same day. If it still cannot get through, Sandwell says it returns the following day.
In exceptional prolonged disruption, some collections may take more than five working days to recover. Sandwell can temporarily allow extra side waste on the next collection in those exceptional circumstances.
Unadopted Roads, Roadworks and Temporary Collection Points
A correct calendar date does not guarantee a refuse vehicle can safely reach every private or unadopted road.
Move bins toward the public highway
Sandwell can require residents to present containers at the nearest suitable point accessible from the adopted highway.
Collection point may change
Extended roadworks or local events can require a temporary collection location or different collection arrangement.
Do not block pedestrians
Where containers must be moved toward the highway, they should still be positioned safely without obstructing pedestrian or vehicle movement.
They may not be wide enough, properly surfaced, maintained or equipped with a suitable turning area for a large waste collection vehicle.
Sandwell Bank Holiday Bin Collections 2026
Do not assume every UK bank holiday creates a one-day collection delay.
| Holiday period | Sandwell 2026 guidance checked |
|---|---|
| Easter weekend | Sandwell’s bin-day page published no Easter collection change. |
| Monday 4 May 2026 | No change; use the normal collection day. |
| Monday 25 May 2026 | No change; use the normal collection day. |
| Christmas / New Year 2026 | Check the live festive notice when published rather than copying a previous year. |
Sandwell says special rescheduling is mainly associated with Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and sometimes Easter.
Sandwell Garden Waste 2026: £40, Fortnightly and Seasonal
The 2026 garden-waste subscription costs £40 and provides up to 20 collections.
Annual charge
The 2026 fee is frozen at £40.
Every 2 weeks
Only subscribed homes receive the service.
Collections
Joining late means receiving only the remaining dates.
Seasonal service
Garden collections stop during the winter period.
2026 operating window
Week 1 and Week 2 rounds run for 40 weeks, beginning in the weeks commencing 2 March or 9 March 2026 and ending in the weeks commencing 7 December or 14 December 2026.
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge and shrub clippings
- Plants and weeds
- Leaves, twigs and bark
- Cut flowers
- Windfall fruit
- Soil and turf
- Ash
- Garden chemicals
- Plastic bags or liners
- Plant pots
- Kitchen food
- Stones or rubble
- DIY rubbish or timber
- Animal waste/bedding
- Metal or glass
Sandwell says it can take up to five working days for the property to appear on the garden-waste collection system.
The garden bin stays with the property. The terms say the new resident can benefit from the existing service and the previous resident does not receive a refund simply because they move.
Persistent non-compliance can lead to enforcement or withdrawal of the service without a refund.
Garden terms describe refund consideration only after specific complete-service failures—for example repeated qualifying misses that were reported correctly. Do not assume one missed garden collection creates an automatic refund.
Grey Bin Full? Use Sandwell’s Capacity Options in This Order
Separate all recycling
Paper/card goes into blue bags; glass, cans and accepted plastics go into the blue-lid bin.
Use free weekly food waste
Food separation can release significant space from the grey bin.
Ask for more recycling capacity
Additional blue bags and a larger blue-lid recycling bin can be available where needed.
Apply for extra residual capacity only if eligible
Larger families and residents with certain medical needs can request an assessment.
Larger grey bin assessment
Households with six or more family members may qualify for a 240L grey bin.
Extra unavoidable waste
Medical or incontinence needs can support an additional-capacity application.
Additional purple bag
Eligible households with young children in nappies may receive an extra authorised rubbish bag every two weeks.
Sandwell states that only bins provided by Sandwell/Serco are emptied. Residents cannot simply buy an extra non-recycling grey bin and add it to the route.
Replacement Sandwell Bins: Current Charges and Free Exceptions
| Container | Lost / stolen charge | Eligible over-60 concession |
|---|---|---|
| Grey household bin | £22 | £6.10 |
| Blue-lid recycling bin | £22 | £6.10 |
| Green garden bin | £22 | £6.10 |
| Brown food-waste bin | Free | Free |
If Sandwell cannot repair a damaged bin, the Council says it will leave a free replacement and remove the damaged one.
A newly built home that has never had its first set of wheelie bins can order the initial set free after the property is occupied.
Check neighbouring properties first; bins are commonly taken in by the wrong household after collection.
Assisted Collection if You Cannot Move Bins or the Blue Bag
Sandwell can collect bins and bags from an agreed point when age, disability, mobility or health issues make normal presentation difficult and nobody else in the household can help.
Up to 3 years
Residents must reapply when the maximum approval period ends.
Short-term support
Temporary arrangements can help after an operation or short-term health problem.
Crew collects and returns
The position is agreed with the household after considering safe access.
The waste-service changes do not mean you need to stop using the assisted arrangement.
Flats, Apartments and Communal Bin Stores
Do not use a nearby house’s alternating-bin result when your property uses shared communal containers.
Property-specific arrangement
Shared bins are emptied regularly, but the collection day and frequency depend on the development.
Designed for kerbside homes
Sandwell says its normal bin-day finder is for households receiving kerbside bin collections.
Shared bins differed
The initial Alternate Weekly Collection change did not apply to large shared recycling-bin households in the same way.

- Keep all booked items together.
- Items must be empty.
- Do not substitute a different item after booking.

An eligible household receives one free collection of up to four bulky items or one fridge/freezer in a 12-month period.
Clinical Waste and Sharps: Use the Separate Service
Free eligible collection
Soiled surgical dressings, swabs and prescribed sharps can require the dedicated clinical-waste service.
Nappies are usually not clinical waste
Nappies, sanitary products and incontinence pads normally go in bagged grey-bin household rubbish.
Email sandwellclinicalwaste@serco.com or call 0121 569 6886. Sandwell currently recommends email because telephone availability can be limited.
Serco does not supply the sharps box; request the correct container from the GP or pharmacist where appropriate.

Stop Manually Checking: Use Sandwell’s Free Collection Alerts
Sandwell provides free email alerts for service disruption, bank-holiday information and other bin/recycling updates.
Evening-before bin email
Use the bin-day reminder so you know the correct collection is coming.
Weather warnings
Email alerts can tell you when poor conditions affect the waste service.
Bank-holiday alerts
This is safer than assuming every public holiday shifts the normal date.
Using a Private Waste Collector? Check the Waste Carrier First
A clear-out or renovation can produce more waste than the household service can handle, but paying an unlicensed collector can create a fly-tipping problem.
- Ask the collector for their waste-carrier details.
- Check the registration before paying.
- Keep a name, contact number and collection record.
- Do not assume a cheap social-media clearance advert is legitimate.
