Newark Bin Collection: Calendar, Schedule & Missed Reports

Newark household collections are managed by Newark and Sherwood District Council. Exact collection days vary by address, so the official property calendar is the safest place to check your next green refuse, silver recycling, teal-lid glass or subscribed brown garden-waste collection.

Standard collections currently run on different cycles: general household waste and mixed recycling are normally fortnightly, separate glass is generally collected every eight weeks, and paid garden waste is collected fortnightly for most of the year.

Newark Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Use Newark and Sherwood District Council’s official collection-day service to check the exact property. The calendar lists upcoming dates separately for green refuse, silver recycling, teal-lid glass and subscribed brown garden recycling.

Put the correct bin at the front of the property and on the pavement by 6am, unless the council has given a different presentation instruction. The lid must close and waste left beside the bin is not normally collected.

General waste Every 2 weeks
Silver recycling Every 2 weeks
Glass Usually every 8 weeks

How to Check Your Newark Bin Collection Day

There is no single weekday that applies to every Newark property. Council calendars show different collection days across Newark, Balderton and the wider district, so use the exact address rather than copying a neighbour’s routine.

  1. Open Newark and Sherwood District Council’s bin collection service.
Start with the official collection-day page or MyNS.
  2. Select the exact property.
The result is address-specific and can differ between nearby streets.
  3. Read each stream separately.
Green refuse, silver recycling, teal-lid glass and garden waste may appear on different dates.
  4. Check the next date, not just the normal frequency.
Bank holidays, weather disruption and route changes can alter individual collections.
  5. Put the correct bin out by 6am.
The calendar confirms the date; presentation rules determine whether the crew can collect it.
Best reminder format: save “Silver recycling — Wednesday 30 September — out by 6am” rather than remembering only “Wednesday”.

Newark Bin Collection Schedule

Service Normal frequency Container Main use
General household waste Every 2 weeks Green bin, sometimes black Household rubbish that cannot be recycled.
Mixed recycling Every 2 weeks Silver bin Accepted paper, card, metal and plastic packaging.
Glass recycling Usually every 8 weeks Silver bin with teal lid Glass bottles and jars.
Garden recycling Every 2 weeks March–November; every 4 weeks December–February Brown bin Subscribed garden waste.
Ollerton and Boughton exception: properties using the Recycling Ollerton and Boughton glass-box service can have glass collected every two weeks rather than the standard eight-week teal-lid wheelie-bin cycle.

Green General-Waste Bin

The green wheeled bin is for non-recyclable household rubbish. Some properties use a black bin for the same general-waste service. Standard general waste is collected every two weeks.

Use it for

Ordinary household waste that cannot go into your recycling, glass or garden-waste containers.

Keep these out

  • Soil, bricks and concrete
  • Building rubble and stones
  • Tyres and car parts
  • Paints, oils and solvents
  • Batteries and vapes
No side waste: household rubbish left outside the bin is not normally collected. The bin lid must be closed.

Silver Recycling Bin: What Can Go In?

Newark and Sherwood’s silver bin is for dry mixed recycling. Since April 2026, the accepted list has expanded under the Simpler Recycling changes.

Accepted examples

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays
  • Plastic tubes
  • Food and drink cans
  • Clean aluminium foil and foil trays
  • Cartons
  • Aluminium bottles and tubes
  • Metal jar and bottle lids

Keep these out

  • Glass
  • Food waste
  • Plastic bags and cling film
  • Crisp packets and pouches
  • Polystyrene and bubble wrap
  • Nappies
  • Textiles and toys
Preparation: recyclable items should be empty, clean, dry and placed loose in the silver bin rather than packed inside plastic bags.

Household batteries

Household batteries can be placed in a tied bag on top of the bin on collection day. Remove batteries from electrical items first. Do not place loose batteries inside the recycling or general-waste bin.

Teal-Lid Glass Recycling Bin

Most participating households use a smaller silver wheelie bin with a teal lid for glass bottles and jars. Standard teal-lid collections run every eight weeks.

Accepted glass

  • Food jars
  • Drink bottles
  • Perfume bottles
  • Toiletry jars
  • Reed-diffuser bottles

Not accepted

  • Pyrex and oven-proof glass
  • Mirrors
  • Drinking glasses
  • Vases
  • Window glass
  • Light bulbs and tubes

Empty and clean bottles and jars before collection. Remove plastic lids and silicone seals where practical; metal lids can remain attached.

Newark Recycling Changes From April 2026

Simpler Recycling expanded what Newark and Sherwood residents can place in the silver recycling bin from 1 April 2026. Existing accepted materials remained in place, while several additional packaging types were added.

More plastics

Plastic pots, tubs, trays and tubes can now be included where they meet the council’s current guidance.

More metal packaging

Clean foil, foil trays, aluminium bottles, tubes and metal jar or bottle lids are among the additions.

Cartons included

Milk, juice, soup and plant-based drink cartons can now go into the silver recycling bin.

Plastic film is not yet part of the normal kerbside silver-bin service. Newark and Sherwood’s current guidance says plastic-film collections are due from 31 March 2027.

Food-Waste Collection: Newark Pilot Starts September 2026

Newark and Sherwood is preparing for district-wide weekly food-waste collections from October 2027. Before that full rollout, the council approved a six-month pilot covering around 3,000 homes.

The pilot is due to begin in the week commencing 28 September 2026. Newark trial areas include Yorke Drive and the Hawtonville estate, alongside pilot areas in Southwell and Lowdham.

Outdoor caddy

Participating households receive a 23-litre lockable outdoor food-waste caddy for weekly collection.

Kitchen caddy

A 7-litre indoor caddy is provided to help households separate food before transferring it outside.

Important: the pilot does not mean every Newark household has weekly food-waste collection yet. Follow any direct council communication sent to your property.

Newark Garden Waste 2026/27

Garden recycling is an optional paid service. From 1 April 2026, Newark and Sherwood District Council lists the annual subscription at £40 per brown bin.

Annual subscription

£40 per brown bin

The subscription runs from 1 April to 31 March and does not automatically renew.

Collection cycle

Collections are every two weeks from March to November and every four weeks from December to February.

New subscribers receive a brown garden-waste bin, while renewals continue using the existing bin. The council sends a subscription sticker, which must be displayed clearly because only subscribed bins are collected.

Extra brown bin: the published charge for an additional garden-waste bin is also £40 from 1 April 2026.

Newark Bin Not Collected? Check This Before Reporting

Do not report an uncollected bin early in the day. Newark and Sherwood District Council asks residents to wait until after 3pm on the scheduled collection day because crews may still return later in the round.

  1. Confirm it was the correct collection day.
Check the property calendar and make sure the correct waste stream was due.
  2. Confirm it was out by 6am.
The bin should normally be at the front of the property and on the pavement.
  3. Check the lid and weight.
Overloaded or excessively heavy bins can be refused.
  4. Check contamination.
Incorrect materials in silver recycling, glass or garden-waste bins can prevent collection.
  5. Wait until after 3pm.
The collection round may still be in progress.
  6. Submit the missed-bin report.
Use the official council form or MyNS once the collection genuinely appears to have been missed.

Contaminated silver bin

Report it as contaminated, leave it out and the council says it can be collected as general waste within five working days.

Contaminated brown bin

Remove the incorrect material. The brown bin is then normally emptied on its next scheduled garden-waste collection.

Wrong glass

Teal-lid bins should contain accepted glass bottles and jars only. Incorrect glass can cause a failed collection.

Assisted Bin Collection

Residents who cannot move wheeled bins to the kerbside because of reduced mobility, serious long-term illness or disability can request an assisted collection.

Eligibility condition: the service is intended for households where nobody living at the property is able to move the bins. The council arranges an assessment after an application is made.

New, Missing or Damaged Bins

If a bin is lost, missing or damaged, Newark and Sherwood District Council provides an online replacement request route. The council states that a discretionary charge may apply for missing or damaged bins.

Moving into a new property

For properties that need a first set of containers, the published charge is currently £44.10 for a 140-litre or 240-litre bin and £64.60 for an eligible 360-litre bin. These prices include the container and delivery.

Do not assume the new-property price is the replacement-bin price. Replacement charges are discretionary, so use the correct request route for the reason your bin is missing or damaged.

Bulky Waste Collection in Newark

Newark and Sherwood District Council offers a paid bulky-waste service for large household items that do not fit into the normal green bin.

Booking Current charge Useful detail
First single item £14 Base charge for the first booked item.
Each additional item £7.50 Up to six items in one booking.

A multi-part item can count as more than one chargeable item. For example, a bed base, mattress and headboard are treated separately.

Cancellation: the council requires at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel a bulky collection. If crews attend and the item is not ready, the charge is not refunded.

Newark Recycling Centre: Brunel Drive

Newark Recycling Centre is operated by Nottinghamshire County Council at Brunel Drive, Newark, NG24 2EG. It is useful for suitable household waste that cannot go through normal district bin collections.

Period Opening hours
January–February8am–4pm
March8am–6pm
April–September8am–8pm
October8am–6pm
November–December8am–4pm

Nottinghamshire County Council states that its recycling centres are open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Newark also has step-free access without the elevated ramps found at some other sites.

Bank Holidays, Christmas and Weather Disruption

Do not automatically move your collection date because a bank holiday is approaching. Use the official calendar for the exact property because the council records the applicable date directly against each address.

Ordinary bank holiday

Check the address calendar rather than relying on a generic “one day later” rule.

Christmas & New Year

Collection dates can change, so recheck the live calendar close to the festive period.

Dangerous weather

The council may suspend collections when conditions are unsafe for crews or collection vehicles, then catch up when conditions improve.

Newark’s standard collection frequencies are useful for planning, but the property calendar gives the date that matters for your home. Check the exact address, identify the correct waste stream and put the bin out by 6am.

If the bin remains full, wait until after 3pm, check presentation, weight and contamination, then use the council’s missed-bin service if the collection genuinely appears to have been missed.
