Derby Bin Collection: Calendar, Schedule & Missed Reports

Derby household bin guide • 2026

Derby Bin Collection: Calendar, Schedule & Missed Reports

Derby bin collection dates are tied to the property. Use Derby City Council’s postcode checker first, select your exact address and read each collection shown for the home rather than relying on a citywide weekday or a neighbour’s calendar.

Collections normally operate Tuesday to Friday between 6:30am and 4pm. Bins should be ready by 6:30am, while Derby’s separate green food-waste container is now collected weekly following the service change introduced on 31 March 2026.

Derby Bin Collection: Quick Answer

To find your next Derby bin collection, use Derby City Council’s official postcode lookup. Enter the postcode, choose the exact property and use the dates returned for that address. Standard collection rounds operate Tuesday to Friday, normally between 6:30am and 4pm.

Put the correct bin out after 5pm the evening before or by 6:30am on collection day. If it is still full, wait until after 4pm before treating it as missed, check Derby’s missed-bin lookup and report an eligible missed collection within 48 hours.

Current service notice checked 19 September 2026 Derby City Council’s missed-bin page currently carries an update dated 16 September stating that some collections have been delayed because of staff shortages. The council says crews are prioritising essential collections and residents affected by missed blue-bin collections should leave those bins out until collected. Recheck the council page before assuming that this notice still applies to your street.

How to Check Your Derby Bin Collection Day

Derby City Council provides an address-based collection checker. This is safer than trying to calculate future dates manually because collection dates, waste streams and festive changes can differ by property.

  1. Open the council bin-day checker.
Use the live Derby City Council service rather than an old calendar screenshot or a third-party timetable.
  2. Enter your full postcode.
The lookup will return matching properties for that postcode.
  3. Select the exact address.
Check the house or flat carefully instead of assuming nearby properties use the same service.
  4. Read the bin type and full collection date.
Save both pieces of information, for example “Blue recycling — Thursday 24 September”.
  5. Recheck around Christmas or a service disruption.
A normal weekday should not be used to override a changed date published by the council.
Best household habit: save the official lookup page and check the exact property whenever you are unsure which container is next.

Derby Bin Collection Schedule and Collection Window

Derby City Council empties household bins from Tuesday to Friday, with crews operating from approximately 6:30am to 4pm. The exact weekday and container due must still be checked for the individual address.

Collection morning

By 6:30am

Have the correct bin or allocated container ready at the required collection point before crews begin their round.

Night before

After 5pm

Derby advises residents not to put bins out earlier than 5pm on the evening before collection.

After collection

Back by noon

Bring bins back inside the property boundary by 12 noon on the day after collection.

Missed check

After 4pm

If the bin is still full before 4pm, the crew may simply not have reached your property yet.

Good Friday: Derby City Council states that collections take place as usual on Good Friday. Christmas and New Year have separate published arrangements, so do not assume every bank holiday follows the same rule.

What Goes in Derby’s Black, Blue, Brown and Green Bins?

Derby now uses four main household waste streams. The most important 2026 change is that food waste no longer belongs in the brown garden-waste bin.

Black

General rubbish

Use for household waste that cannot be recycled or composted, such as nappies, sanitary products and other non-recyclable rubbish.

Blue

Dry recycling

Clean paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, pots and trays, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars, cartons, empty aerosols and clean foil can be accepted.

Brown

Garden waste

From 31 March 2026, the brown bin is for garden waste only, including grass, leaves, hedge clippings, plants and suitable small twigs.

Green

Food waste

The outdoor dark-green 23-litre container is used for the separate weekly food-waste service introduced on 31 March 2026.

Contamination matters: a recycling or garden-waste bin containing incorrect material can be tagged and left unemptied. Do not rely solely on recycling symbols printed on packaging; follow Derby’s local accepted-material list.

Derby Weekly Food-Waste Collection: What Changed in 2026?

Derby’s separate weekly household food-waste collection started on 31 March 2026. The service did not replace the black, blue or brown-bin services.

Outdoor green container

Households were provided with a dark-green 23-litre lockable outdoor food-waste container that is emptied weekly.

Kitchen caddy

A smaller light-grey 5-litre kitchen caddy can be used indoors before transferring food waste into the outdoor container.

Brown bin changed

Brown bins are now for garden waste only. Food placed in a brown bin can cause that collection to be refused.

Food that can go in the green container

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Cooked and uncooked leftovers
  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Bread, rice and pasta
  • Dairy products
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Plate scrapings and out-of-date food
No extra household charge: Derby City Council states that the new food containers and weekly collection service are provided without an additional resident charge.

If you have not received an outdoor food container, the council’s bin-request service provides the route for requesting one. Additional outdoor food containers can also be requested where needed.

Derby Bin-Night Checklist

Run these checks before collection morning

Correct date? Recheck the exact property.
Correct bin? Match the colour to the calendar.
Before 6:30am? Do not rely on the crew arriving at its usual time.
Lid closed? Do not overfill the container.
Correct contents? Remove contamination before presentation.
Access clear? Do not block collection points unnecessarily.

Ordinary additional rubbish left beside household bins is not normally collected. Derby does, however, allow extra dry recycling beside the blue bin when it is appropriately presented in a clear bag or cardboard box.

Derby Missed Bin: When and How to Report It

Do not submit a report simply because the usual collection time has passed. Derby’s collection window runs until 4pm, and delays can be caused by traffic, vehicle problems, roadworks, weather or wider operational disruption.

  1. Wait until after 4pm.
Before then, your street may still be on the day’s route.
  2. Confirm the bin was actually due.
Reopen the bin-day lookup and verify both the date and container type.
  3. Check the bin for a warning tag.
A tag can explain contamination, excess weight, damage, an open lid or another refusal reason.
  4. Look for a wider access or service problem.
Parked vehicles, roadworks, bad weather and vehicle breakdowns can delay a whole street.
  5. Use Derby’s missed-bin lookup.
Enter the postcode and property to see whether the council has recorded a reason for the non-collection.
  6. Report an eligible miss within 48 hours.
If the bin was correctly presented and no valid refusal reason applies, submit the official missed-bin report.
Return target: Derby City Council says that when its service has genuinely missed a bin, it aims to return within two working days.

Why Derby City Council May Leave a Bin Unemptied

Contamination

The bin contains material that does not belong in that waste stream.

Too heavy

A container that cannot be handled safely by the lifting system may be refused.

Lid not closed

Overfilled bins with a lid that cannot shut properly can be left for health and safety reasons.

Wrong bin

If that colour or waste stream was not due, the collection crew will not normally empty it.

Damaged container

A badly damaged bin may be unsafe for the vehicle’s lifting equipment and require replacement.

Access problem

Roadworks, parked vehicles, severe weather or another obstruction may stop the lorry reaching the property.

Important: Derby says it cannot normally return for bins that were refused because of household presentation problems such as contamination, excessive weight, damage, an open lid, the wrong bin or an unauthorised additional black bin.

Derby Christmas and Winter Bin Collections 2026/27

Brown garden-waste collections reduce in frequency between November and March. From March to October, Derby states that brown-bin collections return to a fortnightly basis. Use the address lookup for the actual brown-bin dates.

Derby City Council has also published the following Christmas 2026 adjustment for blue and black bins.

Derby Christmas 2026 published collection changes
Normal collection date Published Christmas collection
Tuesday 22 December 2026 Monday 21 December 2026
Wednesday 23 December 2026 Tuesday 22 December 2026
Thursday 24 December 2026 Wednesday 23 December 2026
Friday 25 December 2026 Thursday 24 December 2026
Derby states that there are no blue or black-bin collections between 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, with normal collections expected to resume from Tuesday 5 January 2027. Recheck the council calendar closer to Christmas in case operational arrangements change.

Lost, Damaged or Extra Derby Bin

Derby City Council controls the containers used on its household collection service. Council-issued bins remain council property and crews are not expected to empty privately purchased replacements.

Black-bin replacement

Current Derby guidance lists a £30 administration and delivery charge for replacement black bins and approved additional black bins.

Blue recycling bin

Replacement and additional blue recycling bins are currently provided free of charge.

Brown garden bin

Replacement and additional brown garden-waste bins are currently provided free of charge.

Green food container

Replacement and additional outdoor green food containers are currently provided free of charge.

Additional black-bin capacity is restricted. Derby lists circumstances such as households with five or more residents or homes with two or more children in nappies, with an assessment carried out before approval.

Cannot Move Your Bin? Derby Assisted Collection

Derby offers an assisted collection service for residents who cannot move their containers because of disability, injury, pregnancy or another temporary physical limitation. Where approved, the crew collects bins from an agreed location, empties them and returns them.

No extra collection charge

The assisted service itself is provided without an additional charge where the resident qualifies.

Safe collection point

The route must be accessible to the crew, with pets secured and the agreed location kept safe.

Applications can be made online. Derby also publishes 01332 640000 for assisted-collection enquiries.

Derby Flats, HMOs and Shared-Bin Properties

Flats and houses in multiple occupation can use communal containers rather than the standard individual household arrangement. Residents sharing bins are jointly responsible for correct sorting and keeping the bin area usable.

Blue

Shared dry-recycling containers should contain the locally accepted clean recycling materials.

Black

Residual rubbish that cannot be recycled belongs in the correct shared general-waste container.

Food waste

Derby is assessing flats and shared properties separately for suitable food-waste arrangements during 2026/27.

Flat resident rule: follow the labels on the containers serving your building rather than assuming the standard house setup applies.

Sofa, Mattress or Large Furniture? Derby Bulky-Waste Collection

Derby’s bulky-waste service is for household items that do not fit in ordinary bins. Reuse or donation should be considered first where an item is still usable.

Current household charges

1–3 items £38.85
4 items £45.69
5 items £51.95
6 items £57.29
Fridge / freezer £20 each

Collection-day preparation

Booked items should normally be placed together at the front of the property and ready by 6:30am.

Items not listed in the booking, excessively heavy items or incorrectly presented waste may not be taken.

Prices can change. Check the live council booking page before paying, particularly if you are reading this guide after its September 2026 verification date.

How long do I have to report a missed bin in Derby?

Best Next Step: Check Your Exact Derby Address

For the most reliable Derby bin collection answer, start with the council’s postcode lookup and select your own property. Note the container colour and full date, then have it correctly presented by 6:30am.

If the bin is still full after 4pm, check the missed-bin lookup before reporting. This separates genuine council misses from contamination, late presentation, wrong-bin errors and wider collection delays.
