Craigavon Bin Collection: Dates, Calendar & Bin Colours

Find your next black, green or brown-bin collection through Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council (ABC Council). Check the important October 2026 route changes, put your bin out correctly and find practical help if a collection is missed.

Craigavon, Lurgan and Portadown residents should use the official postcode and address lookup, rather than assuming that nearby streets share the same bin day.

Important — your collection day may change from 26 October 2026.

ABC Council is introducing new collection routes across the borough. More than 75% of households are expected to have a different collection day. New six-month calendars are being delivered to homes between 5 and 15 October 2026. Check your new dates now, but continue using your existing schedule until the new routes begin.

Craigavon Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Enter your postcode into the official ABC Council bin-day checker, then select your property to see collection dates. Standard black, green and brown bins are collected fortnightly. All bins must be at the normal collection point by 7am, with lids closed and no extra rubbish beside them.

For dates on or after 26 October 2026, check the new calendar. The route change can alter the weekday without changing the fortnightly frequency.

How to Check Your Craigavon Bin Collection Dates

ABC Council provides an address-based online calendar. You do not need to work out a timetable manually or use a third-party date estimate. The correct result depends on the property selected.

  1. Open the official calendar. Visit the council’s Find your bin day service.
  2. Enter your postcode. Use the postcode of the property whose bins you want to check.
  3. Select the correct address. Check the house number, building or flat when more than one address appears.
  4. Read each collection date. Note which date corresponds to the black, green and brown bins.
  5. Check the October changeover. Save the new six-month calendar for collections beginning in the week of 26 October 2026.
  6. Set a reminder. Use the ABC Council App or your phone calendar to avoid putting out the wrong bin.
Postcode search not working?

If the calendar does not display your collection dates, use the issue-reporting option on the official checker or contact ABC Council on 0300 0300 900. Do not assume an adjacent postcode has the same schedule.

Craigavon Bin Collection Changes: 26 October 2026

ABC Council is reorganising bin routes across Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon to accommodate growing household numbers and balance collection workloads. This is a change to collection routes and weekdays, not a new household recycling system.

5–15 October 2026

New calendars delivered

A six-month collection calendar is being posted to households across the borough. Keep it somewhere visible and check the address details.

26 October 2026

New routes begin

The new schedule applies from the week commencing Monday 26 October. More than three-quarters of households are expected to have a different collection day.

After changeover

Same bin system

Black, green and brown bins remain fortnightly. The 7am presentation rule and normal collection point also stay in place.

What should you do before the new routes begin?

  • Keep using your existing calendar for collections before the changeover.
  • Check the new weekday and first collection date for each bin.
  • Remember that your collection vehicle may arrive at a different time of day.
  • Allow for a possible longer interval during the one-off transition.
  • Do not leave additional bags or boxes beside your wheelie bin.
Do not assume the old weekday continues.

If a bin is presented on the wrong day after the route change, ABC Council says it will not be collected until the next scheduled date. Check the new property calendar rather than putting it out repeatedly.

Need to speak to the council about the change?

ABC Council has scheduled a public information session at South Lake Leisure Centre, Craigavon, on Wednesday 21 October 2026, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. This session is intended to explain the new arrangements before they begin.

Residents who cannot access the internet can use the posted calendar or telephone the council’s waste team on 0330 056 1020.

Craigavon Black, Green and Brown Bin Collection Schedule

Craigavon households use three principal wheelie-bin streams. The standard interval is fortnightly, but individual collection dates and weekdays must be checked against the relevant address calendar.

Standard ABC Council household bin services
Bin Purpose Normal interval How to check dates
Black Non-recyclable residual household waste Fortnightly Official postcode calendar
Green Accepted mixed dry recycling Fortnightly Official postcode calendar
Brown Food and accepted garden waste Fortnightly Official postcode calendar

Although each stream has a fortnightly cycle, that does not mean all three bins are emptied together. Follow the actual dates displayed for your property. The council’s announced route changes may also create a longer gap during the transition.

Craigavon Bin Colours: What Goes in Each Bin?

Sorting correctly matters because waste placed in the wrong bin can cause a refused collection. ABC Council’s October route changes do not alter its existing material-sorting rules.

Black bin

Residual Household Waste

Use the black bin for ordinary household rubbish that cannot be recycled through the green or brown-bin services.

  • Non-recyclable household items
  • Waste unsuitable for the council’s recycling streams
  • Only rubbish that fits safely inside the bin

Do not: put recyclable food waste in the black bin or leave overflowing bags beside it.

Green bin

Mixed Dry Recycling

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Food tins and drinks cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Waxed drinks cartons
  • Accepted textiles and small electrical items

Do not: add plastic bags, cling film, polystyrene or batteries.

Brown bin

Food and Garden Waste

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Cooked and uncooked food
  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Grass, leaves and small branches
  • Torn-up takeaway pizza boxes with plastic removed
  • Kitchen paper, tissues and napkins

Do not: add plastic bags, soil, rubble, stones or general rubbish.

Craigavon Recycling Rules That Prevent Rejected Bins

Green bin: prepare containers properly

Empty and rinse bottles, jars, tins and accepted plastic containers. Flatten cardboard to make room. Keep materials loose in the green bin instead of tying them inside a plastic bag.

Small electrical items may be accepted through the green-bin stream under council guidance, but batteries must be removed and recycled separately at an appropriate council facility. Do not place loose batteries into a wheelie bin.

Brown bin: use the right kitchen-caddy liner

Food scraps can be placed in approved compostable liners or wrapped in newspaper. ABC Council makes compostable caddy liners available at its Household Recycling Centres. Do not substitute ordinary plastic bags.

Garden material should be free of soil, stones, rubble and plant pots. Even a small amount of the wrong material can affect the quality of collected organic waste.

Useful detail for Craigavon households:

Brown-bin material is not limited to garden cuttings. It also accepts everyday food waste, including meat, bones and cooked leftovers. Separating food waste is useful even for a home without a garden.

Why bin lids and presentation matter

  • Put bins at the normal collection point by 7am.
  • Close each lid fully.
  • Do not leave waste balanced on top of the lid.
  • Do not leave side bags, boxes or loose rubbish.
  • Keep access clear for the collection vehicle.
  • Remove containers from the pavement after collection.

Craigavon Bin Not Collected? Check These Reasons First

When a bin is still full, first establish whether it was due for collection and presented correctly. A collection problem during the October 2026 changeover may be caused by using an outdated weekday.

  1. Confirm the correct date. Search the exact property in the council calendar. For collections from 26 October onward, follow the new schedule.
  2. Check the presentation time. Bins must be in the usual collection position by 7am. A lorry may arrive at a different time from previous weeks.
  3. Inspect the lid and contents. Overfilled containers, incorrect recycling and excess side waste can prevent collection.
  4. Check for an access problem. Parked vehicles or another obstruction may prevent the collection crew reaching the bin.
  5. Contact ABC Council if necessary. Explain your address, scheduled collection date, bin colour and the problem you observed.
Wrong-day collections:

ABC Council’s route-change guidance states that bins presented on the wrong day will not receive a special collection simply because the old timetable was followed. The next scheduled date should be checked on the updated calendar.

For collection-service help, contact ABC Council Environmental Services on 0330 056 1020. For difficulties with the online calendar, the council also lists its main number, 0300 0300 900.

Order a Bin, Replace a Damaged Bin or Request Additional Capacity

ABC Council offers household waste containers in different sizes. The council’s landlord and tenant guidance describes standard 240-litre black, green and brown bins, with smaller 140-litre bins available for properties where storage space is limited.

Published ABC Council bin purchase prices

Council-listed bin prices, subject to current confirmation
Container Collection price Delivered price
140 litre£25.80£32.70
240 litre£28.20£35.10
360 litre£49.00£55.90
660 litre£165.50£173.90
1,100 litre galvanised container£416.20£427.80

The council lists delivery as subject to resources and applies specific delivery-charge rules where a set of three containers is purchased for the same address. Check the current price and collection or delivery arrangements before ordering.

Can a large family request an extra bin?

The council’s bin advice identifies circumstances where extra capacity may be considered:

  • Residual waste: households with seven or more permanent residents may be eligible, subject to assessment.
  • Recycling: households with five or more permanent residents may qualify for additional capacity, subject to approval.
  • Medical needs: households producing qualifying unavoidable medical waste may apply for extra capacity.

Additional organic garden-waste bins are not automatically supplied. The council advises residents with excess garden waste to use an appropriate recycling centre.

Assisted Bin Collection for Residents Who Cannot Move Their Bins

If you cannot take your wheelie bin to the kerbside because of mobility or other qualifying difficulties, ABC Council provides an assisted collection application route.

The council explains that the service is available where no able-bodied person at the household can carry out the task. The council must assess the request, rather than every application being accepted automatically.

Already receiving assisted collection?

ABC Council says existing assisted-lift requirements will continue to be recognised during the October 2026 route changes. You should still check the new collection day for your address.

Craigavon Bulky Waste Collection: Charges and Booking Rules

Large household items such as sofas, mattresses, beds, cookers, washing machines and standard-sized fridges may be eligible for a separate council bulky-waste collection.

One lift

£15.30

Up to three accepted items in one booked collection.

Two lifts

£30.60

Up to six accepted items across two lifts, with a maximum of two lifts per year.

What must you do before collection?

  • Book by calling 0330 056 1020.
  • List the actual items to be collected; do not describe them only as miscellaneous rubbish.
  • Put booked items at the agreed collection point by 7am on the collection date.
  • Do not put them out before collection day.
  • Keep access clear and remove loose nails from relevant items.
  • Do not add items that were not included in the booking.

The council has handling restrictions for oversized or excessively heavy items. Staff cannot enter houses, garages or sheds to retrieve furniture. American-style fridge-freezers and certain commercial appliances are excluded from this service.

Avoid paying unnecessarily.

If you can safely transport the item yourself, check whether an ABC Council recycling centre accepts it. Many ordinary household items can be brought to council recycling facilities without a bulky-collection booking.

What can you take?

Depending on the material and site restrictions, the council lists household batteries, electrical goods, cardboard, glass, metals, suitable garden waste, household cooking oil, furniture-related materials, TVs, washing machines and standard-sized refrigerators among accepted waste streams.

What should you not bring?

ABC Council states that recycling centres cannot accept asbestos, plasterboard, gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, tyres, certain chemicals, trade paint or commercial refrigeration equipment. The council also restricts some types of paint to specified sites.

Before travelling:
  • Sort the materials at home.
  • Wear suitable enclosed footwear.
  • Keep children inside the vehicle.
  • Arrange lifting assistance for heavy items; staff cannot necessarily help unload them.
  • Check specific accepted-material rules before transporting unusual or hazardous waste.

Craigavon Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collections

ABC Council sometimes moves collection dates around public holidays. There is no safe rule that every holiday collection moves to the next working day.

For example, published July 2026 holiday arrangements moved certain collections to Saturday dates before or after the affected days. That example should not be reused to predict Christmas, New Year or future bank holiday timetables.

  1. Open your current property-specific bin calendar.
  2. Check the council’s current holiday-collection notice.
  3. Look for a changed weekday or Saturday collection.
  4. Set a fresh reminder rather than relying on last year’s dates.

Craigavon Tenants, Landlords and Shared Properties

ABC Council advises landlords to make sure tenants have access to the correct household bins and know their collection dates. When occupants leave, bins belonging to the property should remain there.

Extra waste produced during moving out should not be placed into green or brown containers if it is unsuitable for those streams. Loose rubbish should not be abandoned beside the bins.

For tenants

Check the household postcode calendar, identify which bins belong to the property, and ask the landlord or managing agent about any shared presentation arrangements.

For landlords

Provide clear waste-sorting and collection information, manage end-of-tenancy waste responsibly and arrange suitable bins for the property.
