Cheshire East Bin Collection 2026: Check Your Date, Food Waste Change & Missed Bin

Cheshire East is in the middle of a major 2026 waste-service change. For now, most households should continue following the dates shown in the live council calendar. From late autumn, food waste will be collected weekly and black-bin collections will move to every three weeks.

This guide separates the current September arrangement from the new late-autumn system so you do not apply a three-week black-bin cycle before it starts at your address.

Cheshire East Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Use Cheshire East Council’s live Bin collection days calendar for your exact property. Before the late-autumn food-waste rollout reaches your address, most homes continue with silver recycling and subscribed garden waste one week, followed by the black household-waste bin the next week.

From late autumn 2026, food waste will be collected every week and the black bin will move to a three-weekly collection. Silver recycling and subscribed garden bins will remain fortnightly. Your collection weekday may also change, so old reminders should be replaced when the council updates your address calendar.

First Check: Has the New Autumn 2026 Service Started at Your Address?

This is the most important Cheshire East collection question in late 2026. The council is introducing the new system in phases, so a household should not copy a three-weekly black-bin pattern simply because somebody in another town has already changed.

Current system

Before your food-waste start date

  • Black household bin: normally every 2 weeks.
  • Silver recycling bin: every 2 weeks.
  • Subscribed garden bin: every 2 weeks.
  • Food waste: garden bin for subscribers; otherwise black bin or home composting.
  • Continue using the collection day currently shown for your property.
Late autumn 2026

From your new service start date

  • Outdoor food caddy: every week.
  • Black household bin: every 3 weeks.
  • Silver recycling bin: remains every 2 weeks.
  • Subscribed garden bin: remains every 2 weeks.
  • Your normal collection weekday may change.
Do not start the new pattern early. Cheshire East currently tells residents to keep using their existing collection day until their new schedule is published. The council says the online calendar will show food-waste start dates and new collection days by mid-October 2026.

How to Check Your Cheshire East Bin Collection Day

Cheshire East covers large towns, villages, rural roads and different property types. A Crewe household should not rely on a Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Congleton, Nantwich or Sandbach social-media reminder.

  1. Open the council’s Bin collection days page.
Use the official address calendar rather than counting forward from another property.
  2. Search the exact household.
Select the correct house, flat or named property when the address list appears.
  3. Read the service and date together.
Record “silver recycling — Tuesday” rather than remembering only a weekday.
  4. Check whether the autumn service has started.
When the new calendar is published, look for the first food-waste date and any changed collection weekday.
  5. Replace old reminders.
Delete an outdated repeating calendar alert once the new late-autumn schedule becomes active.
Useful rule: the live property calendar should override an old screenshot, printed reminder or routine copied from a nearby road.

Black, Silver and Green/Brown Bins in Cheshire East

Black

General household waste

Use the black bin for ordinary non-recyclable household rubbish. Batteries, vapes, electrical items, hazardous aerosols, paint, gas canisters, rubble, soil, sharp items and similar hazardous or heavy materials must use another route.

Silver / grey

Mixed household recycling

Recycling goes into the silver bin clean, dry and loose. Cheshire East accepts paper, card, cartons, cans, foil, bottles, jars, suitable plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and some clean plastic bags and polythene.

Green / brown

Garden and current food waste

This bin is emptied only for households with a current garden-waste subscription. Until the new food-caddy service starts, subscribed households can also put accepted household food waste in this bin.

Local recycling detail: Cheshire East currently accepts suitable clean plastic bags and polythene in the silver recycling bin. Do not automatically apply recycling rules from another council.

Cheshire East Food Waste Collections From Late Autumn 2026

Weekly food-waste collection is the biggest change to Cheshire East household waste services in 2026. Residents do not need to sign up and there is no additional service charge.

Food waste Every week
Black bin Every 3 weeks
Silver bin Every 2 weeks
Garden bin Every 2 weeks if subscribed

What to put in the outdoor food caddy

Accepted food waste

  • Raw and cooked meat and fish
  • Bones
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Plate scrapings and leftovers
  • Bread, cakes and pastries
  • Rice, pasta and beans
  • Dairy products and eggs
  • Plastic-free tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Pet food

Keep these out

  • Garden waste
  • Plastic packaging
  • Ordinary plastic bags
  • Foil and food wrap
  • Liquids and cooking oil
  • Animal waste
  • Nappy bags
  • Non-compostable tea bags
Caddy liner rule: a liner is optional. If you use one, Cheshire East says it must be fully compostable and certified to EN 13432. Ordinary plastic or merely “biodegradable” bags should not be used.

How to put the caddy out

  • Put out the outdoor food caddy, not an indoor kitchen caddy.
  • Place it at the edge of the property by 6:30am.
  • Leave the handle upright so the crew can empty it.
  • Bring it back onto the property after collection and by midnight at the latest.
Once weekly food-waste collections start at your address, Cheshire East says food waste should no longer be placed in the black general-waste bin.

Food Caddy Delivered Early? Do Not Put It Out Yet

Outdoor 23-litre food caddies are being delivered across Cheshire East before collections start. A household can therefore receive the new container several weeks before its first weekly food-waste collection.

Keep it safe

Read the leaflet, attach the supplied sticker and write your address in the space provided.

Wait for the calendar

Do not put the caddy out simply because it has arrived. Wait for the start date shown for your address.

Missing or damaged?

If deliveries have finished in your area and you did not receive a caddy, use the council’s missed or damaged caddy route.

Flats and shared accommodation

Flats are included in the new service. Cheshire East says properties with three or more flats will usually receive a shared 140-litre food-waste wheelie bin stored in the normal communal-bin area, rather than an outdoor caddy for every household.

If you already have an assisted bin collection, that arrangement will continue for the new outdoor food-waste caddy.

Cheshire East Garden Waste Subscription 2026

Cheshire East’s Garden Waste Recycling Scheme is optional. For 2026, the council lists the annual charge as £69 for one garden-waste bin, covering the January-to-December subscription year.

Fortnightly collections

Subscribed garden bins are normally emptied every two weeks on the property’s usual collection day.

Winter pause

The service normally pauses between mid-December and mid-January, so do not simply count forward through Christmas.

Waste portal account

The garden-waste subscription portal is the same waste-services account used for HWRC bookings, not the council-tax My Account.

What can go in a subscribed garden bin?

  • Flowers and plants
  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge clippings
  • Leaves
  • Twigs and small branches
  • Hay, straw and clean wood shavings
  • Accepted food waste under the current pre-rollout arrangement
Do not put soil, rubble, stones, animal waste, plant pots, plastic, glass, metal or household chemicals into the garden bin.
Cheshire East’s garden-waste terms include a 14-day cancellation period starting from the day after agreeing to the service terms. Check the current terms before subscribing or cancelling.

Cheshire East Collection-Day Rules

Ready by 6:30am

Place containers at the kerbside outside the property or at the designated collection point before the round starts.

Lid must close

The council can reject a bin whose lid cannot close safely for lifting onto the collection vehicle.

No normal side waste

Routine extra rubbish or recycling beside a bin is not collected except in a specific council-authorised missed-service situation.

Bring bins back

Return emptied containers to your property as soon as practical after collection.

90kg maximum: Cheshire East says a bin and its contents must not weigh more than 90kg. Heavy rubble, soil and unsuitable materials can result in non-collection.

Cheshire East Bin Not Collected: What to Do

The missed-bin form uses real-time information recorded by collection crews. If the crew has already logged why a container could not be emptied, that reason can appear during the reporting process.

  1. Check that the bin was actually due.
Confirm the service and property in the official calendar.
  2. Wait until after 6pm.
Crews may still be working in the area earlier in the day.
  3. Check presentation and contents.
Confirm the bin was out by 6:30am, the lid closed and no incorrect or excessively heavy material was inside.
  4. Check for a crew-recorded reason.
Access problems, contamination, wrong day or another recorded issue can prevent the report from being accepted.
  5. Report within two working days.
Cheshire East allows missed-bin reports for up to two working days after the collection should have taken place.

Important missed-bin details

One bin at a time If several bins were missed, submit a separate eligible report for each.
Euro bin Missed Euro Bins must currently be reported by calling 0300 123 5011.
Return attempt Where appropriate, the council aims to return as quickly as possible and may attend on a Saturday.
If an access problem stopped the crew, Cheshire East says it will try again within five working days. Keep the bin available where it is safe to do so.
If the council cannot return before the next scheduled collection, its current guidance allows up to three standard-sized bags beside the black household bin or silver recycling bin at that next collection. Garden side waste is not accepted.

Why Cheshire East May Leave a Bin Unemptied

Reason What it means What to do
Not out by 6:30am The collection point was empty when the crew attended. Present it correctly on the next scheduled date.
Lid will not close The bin cannot be lifted safely. Remove excess material and close the lid.
Too heavy Bin plus contents exceeds the safe limit. Remove heavy material and use the correct disposal route.
Wrong material Recycling or garden waste is contaminated. Remove incorrect items before the next collection.
Frozen contents Material cannot fall out when the bin is tipped. Loosen the contents safely before the next round.
No garden subscription The garden bin is not registered for the current service year. Subscribe before presenting garden waste.
Access blocked Vehicle or crew could not safely reach the bin. Keep access clear and follow any return instructions.

New, Replacement, Lost or Damaged Cheshire East Bins

Cheshire East charges for the delivery of many new or replacement wheelie bins. The current published prices depend on container size.

Bin size Capacity Published charge Availability
Standard 240 litres £38.35 Household, recycling or garden container as applicable.
Smaller 140 litres £32.23 Household, recycling or garden container as applicable.
Large 360 litres £51.58 Black household waste only and subject to eligibility.

Delivery time

The council says new bins are delivered within 30 working days. You cannot select a delivery date.

Lost or stolen bin

The first replacement for a lost or stolen bin is currently free; further requests within three years can be charged.

Medical / household need

Households with five or more permanent residents or extra non-recyclable waste from medical needs can be considered for additional black-bin capacity.

Assisted Bin Collection in Cheshire East

Cheshire East provides a free assisted collection service for residents who have difficulty moving their bins and do not have someone in the household, family or nearby who can reasonably help.

Apply online

Explain why you cannot move the containers to the normal collection point.

Proof may be requested

The council can ask for evidence that the household qualifies for the service.

Fixed-period approval

Assisted collections are provided for a set period and may need to be renewed.

If approved before the next collection day, the assisted service can normally start on the next scheduled bin day, provided the application was not made on that same day.

Cheshire East Bulky Waste: Check the Current Suspension First

Cheshire East Council’s current bulky-waste page still shows the household collection service as temporarily suspended and says the council is working to restart it later in September 2026. Existing bookings are being honoured.

Do not assume the paid bulky collection has restarted. Check the live council page before planning around a collection or trying to make a new booking.

Alternatives while the service is unavailable

  • Take suitable bulky household items to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.
  • Donate clean, reusable furniture to a suitable local charity or reuse organisation.
  • Use retailer take-back when replacing certain furniture or electrical goods.
  • Check vehicle-permit rules before visiting an HWRC in a van, pickup, commercial-type 4×4 or large trailer.

When do you need an appointment?

Cheshire East’s current booking guidance says peak-time appointments are required for visits at weekends and bank holidays. You can book up to 30 days in advance through the waste portal.

  • Register or sign in to the separate waste-services portal.
  • Register your property if it is not already linked.
  • Select the recycling-centre booking service.
  • Choose the site, date and available time slot.
  • Enter the vehicle registration you will use.
  • Keep the confirmation code for arrival.
Do not arrive more than 20 minutes early. Cheshire East also says late arrivals may be refused entry so traffic can be managed safely.

Van, Pickup or Trailer? Check the Household Waste Permit

A free household-waste permit is required when visiting a core Cheshire East recycling centre in a van, pickup, commercial-type 4×4 or a trailer with an internal box length between 1.5 and 3.5 metres.

Permit length

A permit is valid for six months.

Visit allowance

It can be used for up to six qualifying HWRC visits.

Household waste only

Trade, landlord, commercial and paid-for disposal is not permitted through the household scheme.

Trailers over 3.5 metres and vehicles above 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight are not allowed at the council’s HWRCs. Only Crewe and Macclesfield can accommodate trailers over 2.5 metres.

New Mobile Recycling Centres Launched in September 2026

Cheshire East launched an expanded mobile Household Waste Recycling Centre service on 5 September 2026. The mobile service brings booked recycling visits closer to communities that no longer have a permanent centre nearby.

Area Location Usual visit pattern
Congleton West Street Car Park, CW12 1JR First Saturday of the month, morning
Macclesfield Duke Street Car Park, SK11 6UR First Saturday of the month, afternoon
Wilmslow Oakenclough Family Hub, SK9 2PZ Second Saturday of the month, morning
Poynton Anson Road, SK12 1TD Second Saturday of the month, afternoon
Middlewich Environmental Hub, Cledford Lane, CW10 0JR Third Saturday of the month, morning
Mobile HWRC visits require a booking. They accept cars and booked pedestrian visits, but vans and commercial vehicles are not allowed at the mobile sites.
Cheshire East also says an Audlem mobile location is planned once final arrangements are complete. Check the live page rather than travelling based on an expected opening date.

Bank Holidays, Christmas and Bad Weather

Cheshire East says household bin collections normally continue as usual on bank holidays. The main annual exceptions are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, when the calendar is updated with revised arrangements.

Ordinary bank holiday

Do not automatically move the bin day. Check the live calendar first.

Christmas period

Check the address calendar when festive changes are published rather than reusing a previous year’s dates.

Snow, ice or blocked roads

Unsafe access can prevent a collection. Follow the current missed-bin and return guidance.

Put the correct container at the agreed collection point by 6:30am. If it remains full, wait until after 6pm, check for a recorded reason and submit an eligible missed-bin report within two working days.
