Chelmsford Bin Collection: Find Your Date, Calendar & Correct Bin
Chelmsford City Council uses property-specific kerbside collection rounds, so the safest way to find your next collection is to search your address or postcode and select the exact property. Standard kerbside rounds are organised into Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday A/B calendars.
Food waste is collected every week. Other kerbside streams alternate: one week normally includes the black non-recyclables bin, green recycling box and cardboard sack; the alternate week includes paper, plastics/cartons and subscribed garden waste.
Chelmsford Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Start with Chelmsford City Council’s official kerbside collection-day checker. Search your address or postcode, select your property and identify the correct A or B calendar. The published kerbside calendars do not apply to communal collections at flats.
Put normal kerbside bins, boxes and sacks at the property boundary by 7am. Food waste is weekly; black-bin and recycling streams operate on alternating fortnightly patterns.

How to Check Your Chelmsford Bin Collection Day
Chelmsford’s kerbside service is based on the round assigned to the property rather than one citywide list of dates. The address checker is therefore more useful than copying a neighbour’s weekday or using an old calendar found in search results.
-
Open the council’s kerbside collection-day page.
Use the official address lookup rather than guessing from the wider Chelmsford area. -
Enter your address or postcode.
Select the exact property shown in the council system. -
Identify your weekday and A/B round.
Chelmsford currently publishes Tuesday A/B, Wednesday A/B, Thursday A/B and Friday A/B kerbside calendars. -
Read the date and waste streams together.
A weekday alone is not enough because the materials alternate between A and B weeks. -
Recheck during route changes.
With collection-round changes planned for early 2027, a saved live link is safer than depending permanently on an older printed timetable.
How the Chelmsford A/B Collection Calendar Works
Standard kerbside households normally have food waste collected each week while the other household streams alternate. Your own council calendar decides which set falls on a particular date.
Black Bin + Green Box + Card
Collected as part of the weekly food-waste service.
Ordinary non-recyclable household waste.
Accepted glass, cans and selected household recyclables.
Card and cardboard, including brown paper where accepted.
Paper + Plastics + Garden Waste
Still collected weekly.
Paper such as newspapers, magazines and suitable white paper.
Accepted plastic packaging and the materials listed by the council for this stream.
Collected only for properties with a valid garden-waste subscription.
Chelmsford Bin Colours, Boxes and Recycling Sacks
Chelmsford uses more separate recycling containers than many councils. Sorting the material into the correct bin, box or sack matters because using the wrong container can make a missed-collection report ineligible.
Non-recyclable waste
For household rubbish that is not collected through one of Chelmsford’s recycling streams, such as nappies, crisp packets and some non-recyclable packaging.
Mixed small recycling
Includes accepted items such as glass bottles and jars, cans and some small electrical items. Clean reusable clothes and paired shoes have separate presentation instructions.
Food waste
A grey kitchen caddy is used indoors and a green external food-waste bin is collected weekly. Cooked and raw food, including meat, fish and bones, can be accepted.
Paper
Use for accepted paper such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, junk mail and suitable white paper.
Cardboard
Use the cardboard stream for card and brown paper. Chelmsford specifically advises that brown paper belongs with cardboard, not in the paper sack.
Plastic packaging
Use for accepted plastic packaging. Chelmsford advises residents to follow its item guidance rather than assuming every package carrying a recycling symbol can be accepted locally.
Garden waste
For subscribed garden-waste households. Accepted examples include grass cuttings, leaves, hedge cuttings, twigs and manageable small branches.
Where and When to Put Chelmsford Bins Out
For normal kerbside collections, place the correct bins, boxes and sacks at your property boundary by 7am on the collection day. Do not rely on the time the collection vehicle normally reaches your street.
Correct presentation
- Use the container assigned to that material.
- Close wheelie-bin lids fully.
- Put containers at the property boundary.
- Have everything ready by 7am.
Common reasons for refusal
- Wrong material in a bin, box or sack.
- Wheelie bin overfilled so the lid cannot close.
- Black sacks placed beside the black bin.
- Waste presented after the round has passed.
Can you put extra recycling out?
Some extra recyclable material can be presented outside the standard container. Chelmsford allows extra plastics and paper in separate clear bags on the correct collection day, while extra cardboard can be flattened and placed beside the card sack.
Clean wearable clothes and paired shoes can be placed in a tied carrier bag with the green recycling box. Small electrical and electronic equipment no larger than the recycling box can also be placed separately with that collection, following the council’s current instructions.
Chelmsford Missed Bin: When and How to Report It
Chelmsford has a narrow reporting window. A standard missed collection can normally be reported on the day after the scheduled collection and no later. If the collection should have happened on Friday, the council allows reporting through the end of Monday.
-
Check that the container was actually due.
Confirm the exact property and the relevant A/B calendar. -
Check the 7am presentation rule.
The council will not treat a container placed out late as an eligible missed collection. -
Check the container and contents.
A wrong bin, contamination, an overfilled bin or side waste can prevent collection. -
Report it the next day.
Do not leave the report until several days later because the online reporting window is limited. -
Leave the container out for recollection.
Chelmsford asks residents to leave missed bins or recycling at the normal collection point while the report is being handled.
The council says it may not return on the same day as the report but aims to collect an eligible missed bin by the end of the following day.
Chelmsford Flats and Communal Bin Collections
Communal-bin properties should not use the standard kerbside calendar as though it were their own timetable. Chelmsford states that flats using communal collections do not have a specific collection day in the same way as kerbside households.
Recycling bins
Communal recycling bins are normally emptied every two weeks.
Food waste
Communal food-waste bins are normally emptied every week.
Garden waste
Chelmsford does not provide its garden-waste collection service to flats. Communal garden arrangements are the responsibility of the property manager.
The council provides communal bins while residents and the property owner, landlord or managing agent share responsibility for keeping the bin-store area safe, accessible and correctly presented.
Chelmsford Garden Waste Subscription 2026/27
Chelmsford’s garden-waste collection became an opt-in subscription service in March 2025. The current subscription year runs from 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027, regardless of when during that period you subscribe.
Up to six brown bins can be included. Residents receiving Council Tax Benefit can currently get the first bin for £46.50; the lower price does not apply simply because a household receives the single-person Council Tax discount.
Collection frequency
The subscribed brown garden-waste bin is collected fortnightly. The council aims for 26 collections over the service year and guarantees a minimum of 20 to allow for circumstances such as adverse weather.
Subscription sticker
After payment, the council sends a subscription sticker by post. Chelmsford advises contacting the team if the sticker has not arrived within four weeks.
The annual fee is not reduced for a late start. The council also states that a subscription cannot be transferred and no refund is offered simply because the subscriber moves home.
Need a New Bin, Food Caddy, Box or Recycling Sack?
Chelmsford’s online order form can currently be used for several household recycling containers, including a green recycling box, grey kitchen food caddy, green external food bin, white paper sack and white cardboard sack.
Can normally be ordered online
- Green recycling box
- Grey kitchen food-waste caddy
- Green external food-waste bin
- White paper sack
- White cardboard sack
Different route required
Plastic sacks, black wheelie bins, garden-waste brown bins and extra food-caddy liners are not all ordered through the standard online container form.
Chelmsford delivers food-caddy liners annually during September and October. If you run out, the council says suitable liners can be purchased or food waste can be wrapped in newspaper before it goes into the external food-waste bin.
Chelmsford Large Item Collection: Current 2026 Charges
Chelmsford City Council offers a chargeable collection service for large household items from residential properties in the Chelmsford area.
A corner sofa counts as two items. Houses can book a specific collection day online, although there is no selectable collection timeslot. Residents in flats or properties with communal collections need to arrange the service by contacting the council rather than using the normal house booking route.
- Put booked items out before 7am on collection day.
- Dismantle items such as sheds, greenhouses and trampolines where required.
- Disconnect appliances from their service supply before collection.
- Only items included in the booking should be presented.
- The council states that cancelled bookings are not refundable.
Chelmsford Recycling Centre: Address, Booking & Opening Hours
Chelmsford Recycling Centre is operated by Essex County Council, not Chelmsford City Council’s kerbside team. The site accepts household waste subject to current material, vehicle and site rules.

Bank Holidays, Christmas and 2027 Route Changes
Do not automatically move a Chelmsford collection one day forward whenever there is a bank holiday. Collection arrangements can be reorganised differently around festive periods, so the property calendar and current council service notice should be checked before bin night.
Normal week
Use the A/B calendar assigned to your exact property.
Christmas / New Year
Check the current festive-period notice rather than reusing an old December timetable.
Early 2027
Chelmsford plans to rebalance collection rounds. Around 10% of households may eventually move to a different collection day.
