Colchester Bin Collection 2026: Find Your New Day and Use the Right Week
Colchester’s household collection system changed from 1 June 2026. Food waste remains weekly, while non-recyclable rubbish is collected fortnightly on one week and mixed recycling, separate glass and subscribed garden waste are collected on the alternate week.
Many properties also changed collection day. Use your exact address in Colchester City Council’s calendar before relying on an old timetable, neighbour’s routine or pre-June 2026 calendar.
Colchester Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Check your own address first. Colchester City Council’s recycling calendar shows household collection dates from 1 June 2026, tells you what to put out and lets you download a PDF calendar.
The standard kerbside pattern is now simple: food every week; rubbish every two weeks; then mixed recycling, glass and subscribed garden waste on the alternate fortnight. Your actual weekday is property-specific.
Colchester’s wheeled-bin rollout is still being completed in stages. Around 18,000 additional households were scheduled to move into the simpler recycling service during September 2026, with the city-wide rollout continuing through to March 2027.
Do not assume another street has the same container setup. Use the council’s Check my service tool to see whether your property is standard, non-standard or part of the flats service.

How to Check Your Exact Colchester Bin Collection Day
The safest way to answer “what bin is collected this week in Colchester?” is to use the official address calendar. Collection days were reorganised from June 2026, so an older printed calendar may no longer represent the current route.
-
Open the official recycling calendar.
Use Colchester City Council’s household collection service rather than a general town timetable. -
Enter your postcode and choose the exact property.
Do not select a nearby house simply because it appears to use the same bins. -
Read the collection date and waste type together.
Save whether the result is food, rubbish, mixed recycling, glass or garden waste. -
Check your current container arrangement.
Some properties have wheeled bins while others continue with approved bag-based arrangements. -
Download the PDF calendar if useful.
Recheck the live service after a rollout notice, disruption or festive-period update.
Colchester’s New Week 1 and Week 2 Collection Cycle
From 1 June 2026, standard kerbside collections moved to an alternating two-week cycle. Food waste remains weekly.
Food + Non-Recyclable Rubbish
- Food waste in the kerbside food caddy.
- Non-recyclable rubbish in a 180 litre black wheeled bin where supplied.
- Non-standard bag properties can use up to three 60 litre resident-supplied black bags.
Food + Recycling + Glass + Garden
- Food waste in the kerbside caddy.
- Mixed recycling in the green-lid wheeled bin or approved clear bags.
- Glass bottles and jars separately in the recycling box.
- Brown garden bin where there is an active subscription.
Which Colchester Bin, Bag, Box or Caddy Should You Use?
Non-recyclable rubbish
Standard new service: 180 litre black wheeled bin. Some non-standard properties continue using up to three 60 litre black bags per fortnight.
Mixed recycling
Standard new service: 240 litre recycling bin for paper, card, plastics, tins and cans. Suitable bag-based properties use clear recycling bags.
Glass
Glass bottles and jars remain separate from mixed recycling and should go in the appropriate rigid recycling box.
Garden waste
Garden waste uses a wheeled bin and is collected only where the household has an active paid subscription.
Food waste: 23 litre kerbside caddy
Food waste remains weekly. It can include fruit and vegetables, meat and fish including bones, dairy, bread, rice, pasta, beans, uneaten food, tea bags, coffee grounds and eggshells. Remove packaging and do not use ordinary plastic bags as liners.
What Goes in Colchester Mixed Recycling in 2026?
One of the biggest 2026 changes is that paper, cardboard, plastics, tins and cans can now be collected together. Households with the new recycling wheeled bin should place accepted material loose inside it; properties remaining on bags can mix these materials in clear recycling bags.
Mixed recycling examples
- Paper and clean cardboard
- Newspapers and magazines
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic pots, tubs and trays
- Tins and food cans
- Drink cans and aerosols
- Foil and metal lids
- Food and drink cartons
- Accepted flexible plastic packaging
Keep glass separate
- Glass bottles
- Glass jars
Drinking glasses, window glass and ovenproof cookware should not automatically be treated as bottle-and-jar recycling.
Standard Bins, Non-Standard Bags and the 2026–27 Rollout
The collection calendar changed city-wide from June 2026, but the physical wheeled-bin rollout is being completed in stages through March 2027. That distinction matters: two households can follow the same general Week 1/Week 2 service while using different approved containers.
Standard service
Suitable kerbside properties move to council-supplied wheeled bins for non-recyclable rubbish and mixed recycling.
Non-standard service
Properties assessed as unsuitable for wheeled bins continue with black rubbish bags, clear mixed-recycling bags and a separate rigid glass box.
Not assessed yet
If the service checker says the property has not yet been assessed, do not buy substitute bins or copy a neighbouring property. Continue following the containers and instructions currently assigned to your address.
Colchester Flats and Communal Bin Stores
Residents in flats should not automatically copy the kerbside house container setup. Colchester has introduced simpler recycling in communal bin stores, including mixed paper, card, plastics, tins and cans together, separate glass and separate food-waste collections.
Mixed recycling
Use the communal container labelled for mixed dry recycling rather than separating paper, plastics and cans into old-style individual streams.
Glass
Glass remains separate in the designated communal glass container.
Food
Use the food-waste setup provided for the block and remove packaging before putting food into the correct communal container.
Colchester Missed Bin: When and How to Report It
A household collection can only be reported as missed once the normal reporting window opens. Colchester currently allows missed-bin reports after 5.30pm on collection day, and reports must be made within two days of the missed collection.
-
Check the personalised calendar.
Confirm the exact waste stream was due at your property that day. -
Check presentation.
Make sure the correct container or bag was used and waste was presented correctly. -
Check for rejected contents.
A collection that was refused because the material was presented incorrectly should not be reported as a genuine missed collection. -
Wait until after 5.30pm.
Reporting earlier can be premature because the day’s route may still be operating. -
Submit within two days.
Use Colchester City Council’s official missed-bin service within the published reporting window.

Colchester Garden Waste Subscription: Current September 2026 Price
Garden waste is an optional paid service. The normal 2026/27 annual service fee was higher earlier in the year, but a mid-season offer is now in effect for subscriptions and late renewals made from 1 September to 30 November 2026.
Up to five bins
The 2026/27 service allows up to five subscribed garden-waste wheeled bins per property.
Fortnightly collection
Garden waste is normally collected on the same fortnight as mixed recycling and glass.
Permit required
The current permit must be attached correctly. The service begins from the next planned collection after the required bin or permit has been received.
Three Black Bags or a 180 Litre Bin Not Enough?
Standard non-recyclable capacity is up to three 60 litre black bags per fortnight for eligible bag properties or the council-supplied 180 litre wheeled bin for standard bin properties.
Households with unavoidable extra non-recyclable rubbish may be able to apply for a waste-limit exemption. Examples include larger households or homes producing significant quantities of unavoidable hygiene or offensive waste.
Need Help Moving Bins or Bags to the Collection Point?
Colchester offers assisted collections for residents who cannot manage their recycling and rubbish containers without help. The service can apply to wheeled bins as well as bags.
It is not available to residents in flats with a communal front door where crews cannot access the property. Other communal arrangements should be handled according to the building’s collection setup.
Need Recycling Bags, Boxes or Replacement Containers?
Colchester City Council operates a Click and Collect service for recycling containers, sacks and bags. Available locations and opening times can change and are shown during the order process.
Brown garden-waste wheeled bins are handled through the paid garden-waste subscription service rather than the normal recycling-container Click and Collect route.
Colchester Bulky Waste: Sofas, Appliances and Large Items
Large items should not be left beside normal household bins. Colchester City Council offers a chargeable special collection service for bulky household items and electrical waste.
| Item type | Published charge | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Most individual electrical / hazardous items listed by the service | £19 | Includes many household electrical items. |
| TV, monitor or microwave | £19 | Check the booking list before paying. |
| Fridge or freezer | £39 | Separate published appliance charge. |
| Large household items | £77 up to six items | Sofas, beds, wardrobes and similar accepted items. |
| Larger household-item booking | £100 for six to twelve items | The council’s published wording overlaps at six items, so verify the price shown by the booking system before payment. |
Collection day
Bulky and electrical collections take place on Mondays, with the date confirmed during booking.
Ready by 7am
Booked items should be outside the property, clearly visible and ready by 7am.
No indoor collection
Crews do not enter homes or garages, and only the items included in the booking are collected.
Clothes, Shoes and Household Textiles
Colchester’s textile service became booking-only from 3 April 2026. Booked textile collections take place on Fridays and are provided through the council’s textile collection route.
Colchester Recycling Centre: Booking and Opening Hours
Colchester Recycling Centre at Shrub End, Colchester, CO3 4RN is operated through Essex County Council’s recycling-centre system rather than Colchester City Council’s kerbside collection service.
1 Mar – 15 Oct
9am to 5pm daily.
16 Oct – end Feb
9am to 4pm daily.
Vehicle booking
A free booking is required for vehicle visits unless an exemption applies.
If you cannot book online and cannot get help from a friend or family member, the current Essex booking assistance number is 0345 743 0430, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm.
Bank Holidays, Hot Weather, Winter and Christmas Collections
Do not automatically move your collection by one day because of a bank holiday. Your personalised calendar is the safer source because operational arrangements can differ by date.
Hot weather
Colchester temporarily moved collections to 6am during extreme heat earlier in 2026. The normal start subsequently returned to 7am. Follow any new live weather notice if one is issued.
Snow and ice
If severe conditions stop crews reaching a road safely, follow the council’s live instructions. Previous winter guidance has told affected residents to leave bins out when inaccessible roads are already logged.
Christmas 2026
A current December 2026 household festive timetable was not identified during this September check. Do not reuse the 2025 festive table; check your live calendar nearer Christmas.

Vehicle visitors normally need a free booking for each visit. Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists are exempt from the normal booking requirement.
Best Next Step: Check Your Address Before Bin Night
Colchester’s 2026 service is much easier to use once you know which fortnight applies to your property: food every week, rubbish on one fortnight, and recycling plus glass and subscribed garden waste on the other.
Because collection days changed and the wheeled-bin rollout is still being completed, the official property calendar and Check my service tool should take priority over an old schedule or another household’s containers.
