Cambridge South Bin Collection: Check Your Dates, Days & Bin Types

If by “Cambridge South” you mean a property served by South Cambridgeshire District Council, use the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste postcode checker for the exact collection date. Enter the property’s postcode, choose the exact address and read the dates shown for black, blue, green and food-waste collections.

South Cambridgeshire’s main black rubbish and blue recycling services are normally collected fortnightly. Green garden-waste collections are normally fortnightly from March to November and monthly from December to February. Weekly food-waste collection is being rolled out property by property during 2026.

South Cambridge Bin Collection: Quick Answer

There is no single reliable collection weekday for all of South Cambridgeshire. Use the official Greater Cambridge postcode finder and select the exact property. The result displays the relevant Black Bin, Blue Bin, Green Bin and Food Waste collection dates.

Household containers should be available at the agreed collection point by 6am. If an eligible black, blue or green bin is genuinely missed, the reporting window runs from 3:30pm on collection day until 3:30pm on the next weekday.

First Check: South Cambridgeshire or Cambridge City?

“Cambridge South” can be confusing because homes around Cambridge are not all served by the same district council. Properties in South Cambridgeshire are served by South Cambridgeshire District Council, while properties inside Cambridge City are served by Cambridge City Council.

South Cambridgeshire property

Use this guide when the address falls within South Cambridgeshire District Council’s waste-collection area.

Same shared waste service, different authority: Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council operate waste collections through Greater Cambridge Shared Waste, but you should still select the correct property in the official postcode system.

How to Check Your South Cambridgeshire Bin Collection Day

The official Greater Cambridge collection finder is address-based. It is more useful than memorising a village timetable because it shows the actual upcoming collections attached to the property.

  1. Open the official household bin collection finder.
Use Greater Cambridge Shared Waste rather than an old calendar screenshot.
  2. Enter the full postcode.
Submit the postcode for the property whose bins you need to check.
  3. Select the exact address.
Do not choose a neighbouring house simply because the street looks correct.
  4. Read all collection columns.
The result can show Black Bin, Blue Bin, Green Bin and Food Waste dates.
  5. Save the stream with the date.
Record “Blue Bin — Tuesday 29 September”, for example, rather than saving only the weekday.
2026 tip: checking every column is especially useful during the food-waste rollout because an active weekly food collection can appear alongside the existing bin schedule.

South Cambridgeshire Bin Collection Schedule 2026

Greater Cambridge’s January 2026 waste policy confirms fortnightly collection of mixed dry recycling and fortnightly collection of general household waste. Green-bin frequency changes seasonally, while separate food waste is weekly once the service has started at the property.

Normal South Cambridgeshire household collection pattern
Waste stream Normal frequency Container What to remember
General rubbish Fortnightly Black bin Use for household waste that cannot use recycling, food or specialist routes.
Mixed recycling Fortnightly Blue bin Keep recyclable material clean enough for the household recycling stream.
Garden waste Fortnightly March–November Green bin The first household green bin is included without an additional annual permit charge.
Winter green bin Monthly December–February Green bin The reduced winter frequency reflects lower garden-waste volumes.
Food waste Weekly once active Outdoor silver caddy Start dates are property-specific during the 2026 rollout.
Use this table to understand frequency, not to guess a date. Your individual address calendar remains the correct source for the next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or other scheduled collection.

Black, Blue, Green and Food-Waste Containers

Black bin

Use the black bin for residual household rubbish that cannot be recycled, composted, reused or handled through another appropriate service.

Blue bin

The blue bin is the mixed dry-recycling container for accepted paper, cardboard, cans, tins, glass bottles and jars, cartons and accepted plastic packaging.

Green bin

The green bin handles garden waste. Before weekly food collection starts at an address, accepted cooked and uncooked food can also use the existing green-bin route.

Silver food caddy

Once activated, use the separate outdoor caddy for the weekly food-waste service. Houses normally also receive a smaller indoor kitchen caddy.

Weekly Food-Waste Collection in South Cambridgeshire

Separate weekly food-waste collections are being rolled out across South Cambridgeshire during 2026. The service began in phases rather than on one borough-wide date, so another village or neighbouring road is not a reliable guide to your start date.

How the New Food-Waste Service Works

Indoor caddy Collect kitchen food waste in the smaller household caddy.
Outdoor caddy Houses receive a larger pest-resistant caddy for the weekly collection.
Weekly collection Put the outdoor caddy out on the property’s normal collection day once the service begins.

Most flats use a shared outdoor food-waste bin located with the building’s other communal containers. Greater Cambridge writes to households before their start date, and the new food-waste date also appears in the property collection calendar.

What can go in the food caddy?

Accepted food

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Bread, rice and pasta
  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Dairy products
  • Eggs and eggshells
  • Plate scrapings and leftovers
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

Keep packaging out

Remove food from packaging before it goes into the food caddy. The caddy is for food material rather than ordinary household packaging.

If weekly food collection has not started yet: Greater Cambridge’s current item guidance still allows accepted household food waste in the green bin until the separate caddy service begins at that property.

What Goes in the South Cambridgeshire Blue Bin?

Common accepted materials include clean paper and cardboard, tins and cans, aerosols, cartons, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, plus some accepted clean plastic bags and film.

Paper & cardboard

Use the blue bin for clean paper, magazines and cardboard. Shredded paper is easier to contain when placed in an envelope or paper bag.

Bottles, cans & jars

Accepted household tins, cans, aerosols and glass bottles or jars can use the mixed blue-bin recycling stream.

Keep problem waste out

Nappies, wipes, sanitary products, food waste, garden waste, electricals, batteries and many DIY materials need another route.

Batteries do not belong inside any wheelie bin. Greater Cambridge asks householders using the kerbside battery service to place suitable small batteries in a clear tied plastic bag on top of a wheelie-bin lid rather than inside the bin.

South Cambridgeshire Green Bin and Additional Bin Permits

Every household is entitled to one green garden-waste bin without a separate additional-bin permit charge. Normal collections are fortnightly from March through November and monthly from December through February.

Households needing more capacity can have up to three additional green bins, giving a maximum of four at the property. The published 2026/27 permit price is £52 per additional green bin, valid from 1 October to 30 September.

Current September 2026 status: Greater Cambridge has temporarily suspended purchases of additional green-bin permits and bins until 1 October 2026, when the new permit year begins.

Additional bins need the correct permit sticker before they are presented. Greater Cambridge says permit stickers can take up to 14 days to arrive after payment.

South Cambridgeshire Collection-Day Rules

Ready by 6am

The correct bin, sack or food caddy should be available at the agreed collection point by 6am.

Use the correct point

A bin left somewhere other than its normal collection point may not qualify for a missed-bin return.

Do not overload

A container can be left if it is too heavy, excessively full or cannot be safely manoeuvred by the collection crew.

Check for an advice card

If the crew leaves an advice card because of incorrect contents or another problem, correct the issue for the next scheduled collection.

South Cambridgeshire Bin Not Emptied: What to Do

A genuine missed collection has a defined reporting window. Greater Cambridge accepts reports from 3:30pm on collection day until 3:30pm on the next weekday.

  1. Confirm that the exact bin was due.
Check your property calendar rather than relying on the usual fortnightly pattern.
  2. Confirm it was out by 6am.
A container presented after the collection vehicle passed does not meet the normal missed-bin criteria.
  3. Check the bin and access.
Make sure it was not too heavy, overfull, contaminated, frozen or blocked from the crew.
  4. Look for an advice card.
If a card explains why it was left, fix the problem instead of using the normal missed-bin route.
  5. Report within the deadline.
Submit the report after 3:30pm on collection day and before 3:30pm the next weekday.
  6. Leave an eligible missed bin out.
Greater Cambridge says it will return for qualifying missed bins within three working days of the scheduled collection where the criteria are met.
Food caddy exception: Greater Cambridge says it does not make a specific return journey for an individual missed outdoor food-waste caddy. You can still report the miss so the service can monitor collection performance.

What if Your Blue Recycling Bin Is Full?

Greater Cambridge allows limited additional mixed recycling beside the normal blue bin. Extra accepted recycling, excluding glass, can be placed in a transparent sack. Large cardboard can be flattened, bundled and tied so the bundle would be small enough to fit in the bin.

Extra dry recycling

Use a transparent sack so crews can see that the contents are recyclable. Do not place loose glass in the extra sack.

Extra green-bin waste

Garden or compostable material left beside the green bin is not collected. Use the bin capacity or an appropriate Household Recycling Centre route.

Need Help Putting Your Bin Out?

Assisted collection is intended for residents who cannot move their containers to the normal collection point because of disability or mobility difficulty and do not have another suitable person in the household who can do it.

Where an assisted collection is agreed, crews collect from the designated location and return the container afterwards. Access must remain clear; for example, an agreed gate must be unlocked when the crew needs to reach the bin.

Food-waste rollout: existing assisted-collection customers are included in assisted food-waste collection when the weekly caddy service becomes active at their property.

Household Recycling Centres for South Cambridgeshire

Household Recycling Centres are run by Cambridgeshire County Council rather than South Cambridgeshire District Council. Sites used by South Cambridgeshire residents include Milton and Thriplow, depending on where you live and what material you need to dispose of.

Milton HRC

The Milton site remains subject to a planned redevelopment. Cambridgeshire County Council says the construction closure date is still to be confirmed, so check the live project and opening-hours pages before travelling.

Thriplow HRC

Thriplow is another important household recycling route for the southern part of the district. Hertfordshire residents need a cross-border permit to use it, while Cambridgeshire residents should follow the county’s normal site rules.

Before driving: check the current opening hours and whether your waste type is accepted. Cambridgeshire states that site gates close 10 minutes before the published closing time.

Bank Holidays and Changed Bin Dates

Do not assume every bank holiday moves your collection by one day. Greater Cambridge can use different arrangements for different holidays. For Easter 2026, for example, only the Good Friday collection required a revised date.

Christmas and New Year arrangements can also include both earlier and later collections. The safest approach is to reopen the property calendar during holiday weeks rather than reuse a previous year’s timetable.

Holiday rule: the official address calendar is the final practical check because it reflects the collection attached to your property rather than a general bank-holiday assumption.
