Calderdale Bin Collection 2026: Dates, Calendar & Bin Colours

Calderdale Bin Collection: Find Your Day, Calendar & Correct Containers

Calderdale households normally receive recycling collections every week and non-recyclable rubbish collections every two weeks. Your actual collection weekday depends on your property, so check Calderdale Council’s address-based calendar rather than following a timetable for another street.

This guide covers Halifax, Brighouse, Elland, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and surrounding Calderdale communities. Find out which bags and boxes to use, when to put them out, how to deal with a missed collection and what changed in the waste service during 2026.

Calderdale Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Recycling is collected weekly and general rubbish fortnightly. Put your household recycling containers and the scheduled rubbish bin at the edge of your property, where it meets the public highway, by 6am.

To see your own dates, use Calderdale Council’s official collection-day finder. It can identify your collection weekday, provide a downloadable calendar and let you sign up for an optional reminder email before collections are due.

How to Check Your Calderdale Bin Collection Date

Calderdale Council provides an address-based collection calendar. It is the most reliable way to answer questions such as “Which bin is due this week?” and “When is my next rubbish collection?”

1
Open the official council finder Visit the waste and recycling collection-day service on Calderdale Council’s website.
2
Search for your household Follow the postcode or address instructions and select your own property when prompted.
3
Check the two collection patterns Note the weekly recycling service and the fortnightly general-waste date. Do not assume that both are due every week.
4
Download your calendar Save or print the collection calendar offered for your property so you can check upcoming dates without guessing.
5
Set up a reminder if useful The council offers an optional email reminder service for the day before collection.
A useful habit: Keep the official collection calendar somewhere accessible. When a holiday, service disruption or route change occurs, check the live council information before relying on an old printout.

Calderdale Bin Collection Schedule 2026

Calderdale’s standard household service uses two main frequencies: recyclable materials are collected weekly, while residual household waste is normally collected every other week.

Different recycling materials have their own containers, but the usual kerbside collection service collects them on the weekly recycling round.

Container Material Normal frequency
Black box Glass, corrugated cardboard and small electrical items Weekly
White sack Accepted plastics, metal tins, cans, aerosols and foil Weekly
Green bag Paper, thin cardboard and cartons Weekly
Brown food caddy Household food waste Weekly, where supplied
General waste bin Remaining non-recyclable rubbish Every 2 weeks
Subscribed garden bin Accepted garden waste Every 2 weeks, March–November

How to read a fortnightly calendar

For example, if your household’s general-waste bin is scheduled for a Tuesday, your next ordinary general-waste collection would usually be two weeks later. Weekly recycling continues between those rubbish collections.

This example explains the cycle, not the actual date for any Calderdale address. Use the official finder for your property’s collection dates.

Week 1 Weekly recycling + scheduled general waste
Week 2 Weekly recycling
Week 3 Weekly recycling + scheduled general waste

Collection Days in Halifax, Brighouse, Todmorden and Other Calderdale Areas

Calderdale Council covers several distinct towns and rural communities. The normal service frequencies are shared across much of the borough, but collection weekdays can vary by property and route.

Halifax

Use the address calendar for your Halifax property. Do not assume the collection day is identical across different HX postcodes.

Brighouse & Rastrick

Check your property rather than copying another street’s recycling or rubbish collection day.

Elland & Greetland

Find your exact household calendar and check local access or communal collection arrangements if relevant.

Hebden Bridge

Check collection instructions for your actual property, especially where the normal kerbside point is not obvious.

Sowerby Bridge

Confirm which collection round serves your home and keep recycling materials separated.

Todmorden

Use the Calderdale Council calendar for household collections rather than a neighbouring authority’s timetable.

Boundary check: A nearby town, shared postcode district or familiar place name does not always identify the council responsible for a property. Follow the collection authority shown for your full address.

Calderdale Bin Colours: What Goes in the Black Box, White Sack and Green Bag?

Calderdale’s recycling system differs from the three-wheelie-bin arrangements used by some other West Yorkshire councils. Most standard kerbside households sort recycling into separate boxes, sacks and food caddies.

Black recycling box

Glass, Corrugated Cardboard & Small Electricals

Put in or with the box:

  • Glass bottles and jars, rinsed.
  • Brown corrugated cardboard, flattened.
  • Small electrical items such as kettles and irons, placed in a carrier bag in or beside the box.

Keep out: drinking glasses, Pyrex, ceramics, broken glass and metal tins.

Cardboard can be flattened and placed under the box if it does not fit inside. Keep it secure so it does not blow away.

White recycling sack

Plastic Containers, Cans & Foil

Accepted examples:

  • Plastic bottles and loose bottle lids.
  • Plastic food pots, tubs and trays.
  • Rinsed food tins and drink cans.
  • Empty aerosol cans.
  • Clean aluminium foil and foil trays.

Keep out: plastic film, crisp packets, polystyrene trays, plastic toys and plant pots.

Rinse containers where appropriate and secure the sack’s fastening before collection.

Green recycling bag

Paper, Thin Card & Cartons

Accepted examples:

  • Newspapers and magazines.
  • Office paper, letters and leaflets.
  • Cereal boxes and thin food packaging card.
  • Flattened food and drink cartons, including Tetra Pak.
  • Cardboard tubes and similar thin card.

Keep out: thick corrugated cardboard, hardback books, plastic wrapping and unsuitable heavily contaminated paper.

Corrugated cardboard belongs with the black recycling box rather than the green bag.

Brown food caddies

Cooked and Uncooked Food Waste

Accepted examples:

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings.
  • Leftover meat and fish.
  • Bread, pasta, rice and cereals.
  • Bones and other suitable food leftovers.

Use the small kitchen caddy for collecting waste and transfer tied liners to the larger outdoor food caddy.

Keep out: packaging, general rubbish, pet food and animal waste.

Two different green containers: Calderdale’s green recycling bag is for paper, thin card and cartons. The optional green wheelie bin used by subscribed garden-waste households is for garden material. They are not interchangeable.

Textiles: Use a Separate Carrier Bag

Clean clothing, paired shoes, towels, blankets, bedding and curtains can be placed neatly into a separate carrier bag for the weekly textile recycling collection.

Dirty textiles, duvets, cushions and pillows are not accepted through this ordinary textile collection arrangement.

Common Calderdale Recycling Mistakes

Some materials look recyclable but must go into a different container from the one residents might expect. This is particularly important with cardboard, mixed packaging and electrical items.

Item Correct household route Useful reminder
Corrugated delivery box Black recycling box Flatten it and remove plastic packaging.
Cereal box Green recycling bag Thin card is different from thick corrugated card.
Rinsed food tin White recycling sack Not the glass recycling box.
Plastic milk bottle White recycling sack Remove the lid and place it loose in the sack.
Drink carton Green recycling bag Empty, rinse and flatten it.
Small kettle Black box collection Place in a carrier bag in or next to the box.
Plastic film Not accepted in white sack Check a suitable separate recycling route.
Garden clippings Subscribed garden bin or HWRC Do not use the ordinary household rubbish bin.
Fire and safety warning: Do not put batteries, gas cylinders, paint or hazardous waste into normal household rubbish. Use an appropriate specialist recycling or disposal service.

Calderdale Bin Collection Rules: What to Do Before 6am

Correct presentation helps collection crews work safely and reduces the risk of waste being left behind.

Put containers out by 6am

Place the recycling box, bags, food caddy and scheduled rubbish container at the edge of your property where it meets the public highway.

Close the wheelie-bin lid

Calderdale has a closed-lid and no-side-waste policy. Overfilled bins and extra rubbish beside them may be left uncollected.

Keep recycling secure

Flatten cardboard, close recycling sacks properly and prevent lightweight material from blowing into the street.

Keep the road accessible

Do not park too close to junctions or obstruct narrow streets. Overhanging branches and parked vehicles can prevent large collection vehicles from passing.

Return emptied containers

Bring your bins, bags and recycling box back onto your property as soon as reasonably possible after collection.

Follow your property arrangement

Shared bins, flats and approved assisted collections may have a different agreed collection point.

What if Your Property Does Not Have a Wheelie Bin?

Some Calderdale properties use a sack collection instead. The council normally takes a maximum of four standard household waste bags per fortnightly rubbish collection for properties without a wheelie bin.

Additional sacks are not automatically accepted. Households qualifying for extra waste capacity may have different arrangements approved by the council.

Missed Calderdale Bin Collection: What Should You Do?

If your bin or recycling containers were not collected on their scheduled day, check whether the collection was delayed across the street or whether the problem affected only your property.

1
Confirm the scheduled date Check your address in the collection-day finder. Make sure the rubbish collection was due rather than only the weekly recycling collection.
2
Check your presentation Was the bin or recycling container at the proper collection point by 6am? Was the lid closed and the material correctly sorted?
3
Check whether neighbours are affected If several properties have been missed, the collection vehicle may have been delayed by a route or access problem.
4
Follow the council’s catch-up instructions The council’s missed-collection guidance advises leaving containers out after a missed scheduled collection. Crews may return the following day or catch up at weekends.
5
Report an unresolved missed collection Use Calderdale Council’s missed-collection reporting service and follow any current eligibility or timing instructions shown there.
Extended delays: Calderdale’s missed-collection information explains that waste not collected by the end of the weekend may become a priority for the next scheduled collection day. Follow the current advice about bringing containers back onto your property rather than leaving them out indefinitely.

Why Was Only My Bin Left?

Look for a closed-lid issue, incorrectly sorted recycling, excess side waste, unsafe access or a container that could not be lifted safely.

If the crew left a sticker explaining a problem, correct that issue. A bin rejected because of its contents is different from a straightforward missed collection.

Calderdale Bin Collections on Bank Holidays and at Christmas

Do not automatically move your household collection date because a bank holiday falls during the week. The correct arrangement is the one published for your address, together with any council announcement about temporary changes.

Checking Bank Holiday Collections

Ordinary Bank Holidays

Check the official collection-day finder and any current council notice. The reminder service can also help residents keep track of their next scheduled collection.

Christmas and New Year

Festive collection arrangements may differ from the usual pattern. Recheck your calendar close to December 2026 rather than relying on a timetable from an earlier Christmas.

What if Bad Weather Delays Collection?

Snow, icy roads, flooding and blocked access can prevent waste vehicles from completing their normal rounds. Check council service information and follow its instructions on whether to leave containers out or bring them back in.

Important distinction: Household collections and Household Waste Recycling Centre opening hours are separate services. Recycling centres normally operate Sunday opening hours on bank holidays and close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, according to the council’s published site guidance.

Important Calderdale Waste Collection Change in August 2026

Calderdale Council introduced a new service-delivery partnership with Norse Group from 1 August 2026, following the end of the previous SUEZ collection contract.

The partnership, known as Calderdale Norse, now delivers household waste and recycling collections and manages the borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

New provider Calderdale Norse
Started 1 August 2026
Collection days Remain unchanged
Resident contact Through the council

According to Calderdale Council’s official announcement, residents did not need to take any action for the handover. Collection days, recycling arrangements and council contact routes remained the same.

What this means for households: Continue using the Calderdale Council collection calendar, missed-bin service and waste guidance. Do not assume that the change of contractor created a new collection timetable.

Calderdale Garden Waste Collection: Green Bin Charges and Dates

Calderdale’s garden-waste collection is an optional, chargeable household service. It is separate from the free weekly paper recycling collected in green bags.

Subscribers receive a 240-litre green wheelie bin for suitable garden material. Collections operate fortnightly between March and November.

Online annual fee £56
Other payment fee £58
Subscription term 1 Aug – 31 Jul
Season March–November

Can New Households Subscribe in 2026?

The council currently states that its garden-waste service is at capacity and is not accepting new subscriptions immediately.

Residents who want to join can complete the official expression-of-interest form. The council says it will contact applicants when capacity becomes available but cannot provide a waiting time.

Do not pay through an unofficial website. At the time of this guidance, the council directs new applicants to an expression-of-interest form. Existing subscribers have a separate renewal process.

Renewals, Moving Home and Bin Delivery

  • Existing subscriptions run from 1 August to 31 July.
  • Annual renewal is due by 31 July.
  • Subscribers should wait for their renewal reminder rather than creating a new subscription.
  • The full annual charge applies even if someone joins part-way through the subscription year.
  • When new subscriptions are available, bin delivery can take up to 28 working days.
  • If you move within Calderdale, contact the council about transferring your subscription.
  • Each additional garden bin requires its own paid subscription.

Garden Collection-Day Rules

Subscribed garden bins must be at the normal collection point by 6am with the lid closed. Display the house number or name clearly and keep excess garden waste out of the pavement area.

Only bins associated with a valid subscription are emptied. If you cannot join the service, consider home composting or taking suitable garden material to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Request a Replacement Bin, Recycling Box, Bag or Food Caddy

If a container is damaged, missing or was not supplied, Calderdale Council has an online waste-container request service.

Recycling Equipment

  • Black recycling boxes.
  • Green recycling sacks.
  • White recycling sacks.
  • Small indoor food caddies.
  • Larger outdoor food caddies.
  • Rolls of food-caddy liners.

Wheelie Bins

The council lists a £30 delivery charge for new or replacement wheelie bins.

Extra general-waste bins are subject to eligibility checks. An unauthorised additional bin may not be emptied and may be removed.

The council limits the number of some container orders it accepts each day. If no order slots are available, try again the following day. Green sacks and food liners are exempt from the stated daily restriction.

Need More General-Waste Capacity?

Households already making full use of recycling may be assessed for additional waste capacity in limited circumstances, including households with six or more permanent residents or two children under three-and-a-half in full-time nappies.

Contact the council for an assessment rather than placing an unauthorised second bin out for collection.

Flats, Apartments and Shared Bins in Calderdale

Flats and larger apartment buildings may use communal recycling arrangements instead of individual black boxes, white sacks and green bags.

For buildings above three storeys, the council normally offers communal recycling where there is sufficient bin-storage space and access for collection vehicles.

General Rubbish

Shared residual-waste containers may be provided in a designated communal bin store.

Mixed Recycling

Communal recycling may include paper, cardboard, cartons, plastic containers and cans in labelled shared bins.

Glass Recycling

Some communal schemes use separate blue-lidded or blue glass containers. Check the labels at your building.

Food-waste exception: Calderdale Council states that it cannot offer its normal food-waste collection service to flats under the communal arrangements described in its current guidance. Do not assume the availability of a brown food caddy at every apartment.

If you do not know where your building’s recycling bins are stored, contact your landlord, caretaker or property management company. Residents are responsible for sorting waste into the correct labelled containers.

Assisted Bin Collections in Calderdale

Residents who cannot take bins and recycling containers to the collection point may qualify for assistance. Calderdale offers both permanent and temporary arrangements, subject to eligibility.

Permanent Help

The council’s criteria include households with no able-bodied resident aged 15 or over, where residents meet relevant age, disability or mobility conditions.

Examples include residents aged 75 or over, some Blue Badge holders and people receiving certain qualifying disability benefits.

Temporary Help

Temporary assisted collections can be offered where nobody at the household can manage the containers, for example during recovery after a hospital stay. The council describes an initial period of up to three months, with reapplication possible where further help is needed.

The application asks for household details and may involve eligibility checks. Residents who need help completing the form can contact Calderdale Council on 01422 288002.

Calderdale Bulky Waste Collection: Furniture, Mattresses and Appliances

Large household items should not be left beside ordinary bins or recycling containers. Calderdale Council provides a chargeable bulky-item service for eligible domestic waste.

Ordinary Bulky Household Items

£25 for up to five items.

Each additional accepted item is charged at £5.

Examples include certain beds, mattresses, bed frames, furniture and suitable household electrical items.

Fridges and Freezers

£25 per item.

Refrigeration appliances require separate handling and recycling, so check the appliance-specific price before booking.

Before You Book

  • Check the council’s accepted-items list.
  • Consider whether the item could be reused or donated.
  • Keep items empty and free of hazardous materials.
  • Arrange a safe, accessible collection position outside the property.
  • Have payment card details ready.
  • Check all items carefully before submitting: changes may not be possible after payment.

The council advises that bulky collections can take up to 28 working days, with possible further delays during service disruptions.

The service is for household items, not waste produced by a business or commercial contractor.
