Green box still handles plastics and cans

Red bag replaces the green recycling box
- Red bag: plastics and cans.
- Blue bag: paper and card.
- Black recycling box remains.
- Missing/damaged brown food bin and caddy can be replaced during rollout.
Paper moved to the blue bag
Paper and cardboard should now go into the blue recycling bag rather than the black recycling box.
Red-bag rollout begins
Green recycling boxes start being phased out and replaced by red reusable bags for plastics and cans.
Kerbside rollout continues
Use your existing local setup until the replacement containers are actually delivered to your property.
Do not copy a newer neighbourhood: if somebody nearby already has the red bag but your property has not received the rollout, follow the containers currently assigned to your address.
Practical rule: blue bag for paper/card is already live; red bag for plastics/cans begins only when the rollout reaches your property.

Soft plastics in 2026: carrier bags, cling film, bubble wrap and similar flexible plastics are not automatically accepted in Bristol’s current kerbside plastics container. National household plastic-film collection is due from 31 March 2027.
Best sorting habit: check material first, then container colour. Bristol’s colours are changing during 2026, but the material stream is what matters.

Concession?

If you order a replacement before the rollout reaches the property, a charge can apply even though new containers are due later.
Money-saving check: if the issue is a green box or blue bag close to the September–December rollout, confirm whether free replacement containers are about to reach your property.
Shared bins do not work exactly like a kerbside house
Mini recycling centre
Many flats use larger shared containers known locally as mini recycling centres or MRCs.
Do not create side waste
If a communal bin is full, do not pile bags or bulky items beside it. This can cause pests and access problems.
Who reports the problem?
Council tenants may need to involve their housing officer, while private tenants should also inform the landlord or managing agent.
Number your containers
For kerbside student and rented homes, writing the property number on boxes and bags helps prevent containers being mixed up on the street.
Landlord waste is different: waste generated by a landlord while clearing or maintaining a rental property can be trade waste. Household recycling centres are for residents’ own household waste, not commercial disposal.

Hartcliffe Way exception: a pedestrian visit at Hartcliffe Way does not require the normal booking, although ID and proof of Bristol address are still required. Normal vehicle visits require booking.
