Missing, Damaged or Undelivered Bedford Bins
Damaged through wear or collection
Bedford says a bin damaged through normal wear and tear or by council staff/equipment can be repaired or replaced free of charge.

Wait 72 hours and check with neighbours before reporting it missing. If it cannot be found, a replacement can be ordered but charges apply.
Black-bin size
Bedford no longer stocks the older 240-litre black bin as its standard replacement. New black bins issued through the ordinary service are 180 litres.

Assisted Bin Collections in Bedford

Barkers Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre
Bedford Borough Council operates one Household Waste Recycling Centre at Barkers Lane, Bedford, MK41 9SB. For ordinary household visits by eligible residents, the site does not use a time-slot booking system.
Between 1 April and 30 September, Saturday opening is extended to 7pm, with last entry at 6:50pm. The site is normally open on bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
New from 1 October 2026: Register Your Vehicle Before Using Barkers Lane
Bedford Borough Council is introducing a free vehicle-registration system from Thursday 1 October 2026. The site’s ANPR camera will check registered number plates automatically.

Registration is valid for two years.

Registration is valid for six months.
Hired vehicle
Registration is valid for 24 hours.
Up to two vehicles can be registered to one address. From 1 October, the new registration system replaces the separate permit system for household visits involving items such as fridges/freezers, car tyres and permitted DIY waste, and for qualifying vans, pickups and small single-axle trailers.
