Bin Collection Antrim: Find Your Date, Day, Bin Type & Calendar

If you live in Antrim town or another property served by Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council, start with the council’s live collection checker. Search your street name or postcode and use the schedule returned for your own property rather than relying on an old blue-bin calendar.

Antrim’s recycling service changed substantially from September 2025. The newer three-tier Wheelie Box is collected weekly, the streamlined black residual-waste bin remains on a fortnightly collection, and the brown-bin service continues on its existing schedule.

Antrim Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Check your own address before putting anything out. Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council provides a live Bin Schedule service and also lets residents search by street name or postcode from the council website.

Put the scheduled bin or Wheelie Box at the edge of your property or designated collection point by 7am. For standard wheeled bins, the council says the handle should face out. Collection can take place at any time from 7am onwards.

Antrim is easy to confuse with Mid and East Antrim. This guide is for Antrim town and households served by Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council. Ballymena, Larne and Carrickfergus are in Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and use a different waste system.

How to Check Your Antrim Bin Collection Date

Antrim collection days are property-specific. The council’s current website provides a Bin Schedule service and a street-name or postcode search. That live result should take priority over an old printed calendar, saved screenshot or neighbour’s collection day.

  1. Open the official Bin Schedule.
Use the council’s current checker rather than searching for an old Antrim PDF calendar.
  2. Search your street or postcode.
Make sure the result relates to your own property and not another road with a similar name.
  3. Check the container as well as the date.
Record whether the result refers to your Wheelie Box, black bin or brown bin.
  4. Look for an amended date around holidays.
Public-holiday arrangements can move an otherwise normal collection.
  5. Have the correct container ready by 7am.
Collection times vary during the route, so the normal arrival time of the vehicle is not a safe set-out deadline.
Best way to save the date: note both the container and date together, for example “Black bin — Thursday 8 October”, rather than writing down only “Thursday”.

Antrim’s Bin System Changed: Do Not Follow an Old Blue-Bin Calendar

Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council began rolling out its harmonised Wheelie Box system to Antrim, Randalstown, Crumlin, Templepatrick, Toome and surrounding areas from September 2025.

That change matters because older Antrim calendars can still appear in search results. Those documents may show the previous blue mixed-recycling bin. Current residents should use the live checker and the containers actually issued to their property.

Wheelie Box

Three stackable recycling boxes on a wheeled trolley, collected every week.

Brown bin

The council says the brown-bin service was not changed by the Wheelie Box rollout. Use the live schedule for its exact dates.

Collection day may have changed during harmonisation. The council advised that some households would receive a different collection day. Where this happened, the new Wheelie Box was supplied with a collection-day sticker and residents were also advised of relevant black-bin changes.

Antrim Bin Types and Collection Pattern

Container Main use Current pattern Key action
Wheelie Box Separated dry recycling Weekly Sort each material into the correct tier and present by 7am.
Black bin Residual household waste after recycling Fortnightly Keep the lid completely closed and do not leave extra black bags.
Brown bin Accepted food and garden waste Check live property schedule Avoid making it excessively heavy, particularly with wet garden material.

What Goes in the Antrim Wheelie Box?

The Wheelie Box has three separate recycling compartments with a combined capacity of 180 litres. Keeping the streams separate is important because the collection system is designed to produce cleaner recyclable material.

Top • blue lid • 55L

Paper and cardboard

  • Letters and envelopes
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Brochures and catalogues
  • Cereal boxes
  • Egg cartons
  • Postal and cardboard packaging
Middle • red flap • 70L

Plastics, metals and cartons

  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays
  • Food and drink cans
  • Empty aerosols
  • Clean foil
  • Food and drink cartons
Bottom • green flap • 55L

Glass bottles and jars

Use the lower compartment for clean, empty glass bottles and jars. The council says lids can remain attached.

Textiles: clean clothing and paired shoes can be presented in a separate bag beside the Wheelie Box. Do not place glass in an overflow bag.

What if the Wheelie Box is full?

The council permits additional separated recycling in overflow bags or containers. Keep each material stream separate in the same way as the Wheelie Box. Glass must not be placed in an overflow bag.

Antrim Collection-Day Rules: Avoid an Easily Preventable Miss

Present by 7am

Bins and Wheelie Boxes should be ready by 7am. The vehicle may arrive at any time after that.

Close the black-bin lid

A black bin with a raised lid can be rejected. Extra bags beside the black bin are not accepted.

Watch the weight

An overweight container may not be lifted safely. Wet organic waste can make a brown bin particularly heavy.

High-wind advice: the council recommends keeping the bin secure and avoiding leaving it at the kerb overnight when strong winds are forecast. Put it out as close to the 7am start time as practical.

Antrim Bin Not Collected: When and How to Report It

A missed bin should first be checked against the exact schedule. Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council says collections can occasionally be affected by parked vehicles, roadworks, difficult road conditions or severe weather.

  1. Check that the container was actually scheduled.
Reopen the council’s live Bin Schedule and confirm the date and container.
  2. Confirm it was ready before 7am.
The council may not return for a container presented late.
  3. Check the lid, weight and container size.
Overfilled bins, raised lids and unauthorised larger or multiple bins can be refused.
  4. Check for an access problem.
Parked vehicles, roadworks, weather or difficult road conditions can prevent the crew reaching the property.
  5. Report in the council’s stated window.
Where the miss was not your fault, contact Waste Management after 9am on the next working day and within 24 hours of the missed collection.
  6. Leave the correctly presented container available.
The council says it will aim to return where the miss was not caused by the resident and resources allow.

Antrim Bin Collection Calendar: Remaining 2026 Holiday Changes

Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council approved borough-wide refuse and recycling arrangements for the 2026 public holidays. As of September 2026, the main remaining changes affect Christmas and New Year.

Holiday Normal date Approved arrangement
Christmas Day Friday 25 December 2026 No service. Approved alternative collection date: Sunday 27 December 2026.
Boxing Day Saturday 26 December 2026 No collection required. Collections are scheduled normally from Monday 28 December.
New Year’s Day Friday 1 January 2027 No service. Approved alternative collection date: Saturday 2 January 2027.
Recheck before Christmas. These dates come from the council-approved 2026 public-holiday arrangements. A later operational notice, severe-weather update or emergency service announcement should take priority over a saved copy of this guide.

Brown Bin: Food and Garden Waste

The council’s harmonisation information says the brown-bin service was not changed when Antrim moved to the Wheelie Box system. Continue to use the live property schedule for your exact brown-bin dates.

Keep organic waste separate

Food and accepted garden material belong in the appropriate organic-waste service rather than the black residual-waste bin.

Do not overload it

Wet grass and other dense garden waste can make the bin too heavy for the lifting equipment. If necessary, present a less-full brown bin.

Bulky Waste Collection in Antrim

Furniture, mattresses, large white goods and other qualifying bulky household items use a separate council collection rather than the normal black bin.

Free allowance 1 collection per financial year
Items Up to 3 per collection
Extra collection £10 for up to 3 items
Timing Allow up to 10 working days

The current policy applies the one-free-collection allowance per household per financial year, from 1 April to 31 March. Additional collections cost £10 for up to three items. A further charge can apply where a collection requires more than 15 minutes because of the quantity, location or accessibility.

Once booked, items should be outside and accessible. The council says residents should have them presented by 7am on the next working day following the request and should keep requested items clearly separate from objects that are not for collection.

Do not put unsuitable material out as a bulky booking. The council excludes items such as asbestos, plasterboard, loose glass, tyres, oil tanks, commercial items and ordinary waste that could go in the normal household bin.

Assisted Collection and Extra Bin Capacity

Assisted collection

The council provides an assisted collection service for residents who cannot present or retrieve their bins because of age or disability and have no other means of support.
