Ards Bin Collection Calendar: Check Your Date, Day & Correct Bin Colour

Ards and North Down Borough Council collection dates depend on the address. Use the council’s bins and recycling service or the Bin-ovation app to check the schedule for your property rather than copying a date from another street.

The main household streams are the grey general-waste bin, blue recycling bin, green or brown food-and-garden bin, and a separate glass collection box. Apartments can have different communal arrangements, including red communal glass bins.

Ards Bin Collection: 30-Second Answer

Check the collection schedule for your own address. Ards and North Down Borough Council directs residents to its collection calendar and the Bin-ovation app for address-specific dates. Put the correct bin or box at the collection point by 7:00am.

Blue recycling is collected every two weeks. Green or brown food-and-garden bins are also emptied every two weeks throughout the year, while glass collection boxes are collected every four weeks. Use the live address schedule to confirm the exact date and your grey-bin collection.

How to Check Your Ards Bin Collection Calendar

“Ards bin collection” searches normally refer to household services operated by Ards and North Down Borough Council. The borough includes areas such as Newtownards, Bangor, Comber, Donaghadee, Holywood, Portaferry, Kircubbin, Millisle and Ballygowan.

Your exact day depends on the collection route serving the property. A frequency such as “every two weeks” tells you how often a bin is collected, but it does not tell you which Tuesday, Wednesday or other collection date applies to your home.

  1. Open the council bins and recycling service.
Start with Ards and North Down Borough Council rather than a timetable copied from another website.
  2. Use the collection-calendar or Bin-ovation route.
Search the address information requested by the council service.
  3. Check the container name as well as the date.
Grey, blue, green/brown and glass collections do not all follow the same cycle.
  4. Recheck before a bank or public holiday.
Holiday arrangements can temporarily move the normal collection day.
  5. Have the correct container ready by 7:00am.
Collection vehicle arrival times can change from one collection to the next.
Useful habit: save the council bins and recycling page or use Bin-ovation rather than relying on a screenshot of one old collection date.

How Often Are Ards Bins and Recycling Collected?

Several streams have a published regular cycle, but the exact weekday and date must still be confirmed for the property.

Ards and North Down household waste streams
Container Main use Published pattern Important point
Grey bin Non-recyclable household waste Check your address calendar Do not put recyclable material, food waste or glass in it.
Blue bin Dry mixed recycling Every 2 weeks Keep paper and card clean and dry.
Green / brown bin Food and garden waste Every 2 weeks, all year Every household needs one for food waste, even without a garden.
Glass box Glass bottles and jars Every 4 weeks Do not overfill the box.
Frequency is not a collection date. Use the official address schedule to find the actual day for your home.

Ards Bin Colours: What Each Container Is For

Grey

General household waste

Use the grey bin for waste that cannot be recycled through the kerbside collection, Household Recycling Centres or community recycling facilities.

Blue

Dry recycling

Use for accepted paper, cardboard, plastic packaging, cans, foil, cartons and aerosols.

Green / brown

Food and garden waste

Both colours serve the same compostable waste stream. A household normally has one or the other, not both.

Glass box

Bottles and jars

Glass bottles and jars go into the separate council collection box rather than the blue or grey bin.

What Goes in the Ards Blue Recycling Bin?

The blue bin is for accepted dry household recycling. Items should be reasonably clean, and paper and cardboard should be dry.

Common accepted items

  • Newspapers, magazines and office paper
  • Plain envelopes and catalogues
  • Cereal boxes and other clean cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays
  • Food and drink cans
  • Clean aluminium foil
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Drink and juice cartons

Before putting items in

  • Rinse containers where needed.
  • Flatten or tear large cardboard to save space.
  • Leave suitable lids attached to bottles and cartons.
  • Keep paper and cardboard clean and dry.
  • Do not put batteries or electrical equipment in the blue bin.
Battery safety: Ards and North Down specifically warns that batteries and electronic equipment must not be placed in the blue recycling bin.

Green or Brown Bin: Food Waste and Garden Waste

In Ards and North Down, green and brown wheelie bins are used for the same waste stream. You do not need both colours. The council states that every household needs a green or brown bin for food waste, including homes without a garden.

Food waste

  • Raw and cooked meat and fish
  • Bones
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Leftovers and plate scrapings
  • Bread, cake and pastries
  • Rice, pasta and beans
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

Garden and compostable material

  • Grass and leaves
  • Flowers and weeds
  • Plants and shrubs
  • Hedge cuttings
  • Small twigs and branches
  • Shredded paper
  • Small quantities of suitable compostable pet bedding
No plastic liners: use suitable compostable caddy liners. If you do not have one, the council says food can be placed loose or wrapped in newspaper or kitchen roll before transfer to the green/brown bin.

The council currently states that green and brown food-waste bins are emptied every two weeks throughout the year.

Ards Glass Collection Box: What Goes In and How Often?

Glass bottles and jars are collected separately rather than being mixed with blue-bin recycling. The council says household glass collection boxes are emptied every four weeks.

Accepted

Glass bottles and jars of normal household shapes, sizes and colours.

Prepare them

Rinse bottles and jars. Labels and lids can remain attached.

Present safely

Put the box in a clearly visible kerbside position and do not fill glass above the top edge.

Apartments can differ: council recycling guidance says red bins can be used as communal glass containers for apartment properties.

Grey Bin Rules: Why It May Be Left Unemptied

The grey bin is intended only for household waste that cannot be recycled or composted. Ards and North Down monitors grey bins for recyclable material, particularly food waste and glass.

Where recycling is repeatedly put into the grey bin, the council can attach an information label and ultimately refuse to empty the bin until the problem is corrected.

Keep food waste out of the grey bin. Food should go into the green or brown bin after packaging has been removed.

Ards Missed Bin: When and How to Report It

Do not report a bin as missed early in the day. Ards and North Down says residents should wait until after 3:30pm on the scheduled collection day.

A missed collection can be reported for up to 72 hours from 3:30pm on collection day. For example, a Monday collection can normally be reported from 3:30pm Monday until 3:30pm Thursday.

  1. Check that the container was due.
Confirm the collection date for your address.
  2. Confirm it was out by 7:00am.
Collection times vary, so an old “usual lorry time” should not be relied upon.
  3. Leave it available until 8:00pm.
Council missed-bin guidance recommends leaving the container out until then.
  4. Check for a collection problem.
Look for contamination, overfilling, excessive weight, damage or restricted access.
  5. Report after 3:30pm if it qualifies.
Only a resident of the property or someone connected with the property can submit the missed-bin report.
  6. Leave the missed container at the kerbside.
After a valid report, keep it available so the collection team can return.

Do You Need to Report It?

Lorry breakdown or bad weather? The council says crews report these operational problems internally.
Roadworks or blocked access? The problem may affect several households and may already be known.
Only your correctly presented bin missed? Use the official report route after the allowed reporting time.

Ards Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collection Changes

Ards and North Down publishes separate arrangements for bank holidays and festive periods. Do not assume that every public holiday follows the same rule or reuse last year’s Christmas timetable.

During some 2026 bank-holiday periods, household collections were moved one day later. That does not create a permanent rule for every future holiday, so the current council notice should always be checked before putting the bin out.

Before a holiday: check both the collection date and the Household Recycling Centre notice, because centre closures can also change.

Ards Bin Collections for Apartments and Communal Properties

Apartment blocks can require a different container arrangement from individual houses. The council says apartment services are considered case by case and communal red bins can be used for glass.

Communal glass

Red communal containers may be provided for glass in apartment developments.

Check your building setup

Use the labels on the actual communal containers and contact the council if the property arrangement is unclear.

Need an Extra or Larger Bin?

Additional capacity is available in some circumstances. Charges below are from the council’s current additional-capacity information for the 2026 charging period.

Published Ards and North Down additional-capacity charges
Container Who / what Published charge Important condition
Additional 240L grey bin Qualifying larger households or medical/disability waste needs £35.50 Eligibility applies.
360L blue bin Larger recycling capacity £48.85 Priority is given to qualifying larger or medical-need households.
Additional green/brown bin Extra food/garden capacity £35.50 plus £53 annual collection charge Subject to spare capacity on the collection route.
Additional glass box Extra kerbside glass capacity £8 Maximum two boxes emptied per scheduled collection.
Grey-bin eligibility: the council lists households with six or more permanent residents and households where a medical condition or disability generates additional waste among the qualifying circumstances.

Assisted Bin Collection if You Cannot Move the Bin to the Kerb

Residents who cannot present a bin at the nearest adopted road can apply for an assisted lift. The council assesses the property and bin location before approving the collection point.

Property assessment

A technical supervisor carries out a risk assessment to confirm that crews can safely access the container without creating a vehicle or staff hazard.

Application validation

If the location is suitable, the application normally needs validation from a GP. A registered health worker or council manager can be considered in specified circumstances where GP validation is difficult.

Ards and North Down Household Recycling Centres

The borough operates nine Household Recycling Centres. Access currently requires a pre-booked slot, including normal household visits.

Centres

Balloo, Ballygowan, Comber, Donaghadee, Holywood, Kircubbin, Millisle, Newtownards and Portaferry.

Book before travelling

A slot can be booked online. The council says bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance or as little as 30 minutes before a visit, subject to availability.

Bring proof

Take the booking reference and proof that you live within the Ards and North Down Borough Council area.

The booking process asks for an email address, household address, transport type, vehicle registration where applicable, and the categories of waste being brought.

No internet? The council provides telephone booking through 0300 013 3333, option 1 and then option 1, during the published telephone-booking hours.

Glass Bottle Banks if Your Kerbside Box Is Full

Glass recycling is also available at all nine Household Recycling Centres and at standalone bring-bank locations around the borough.

The council lists sites including Portavogie, Bangor Sportsplex, Comber Community Centre, Crawfordsburn Glen, Groomsport Harbour, Killinchy Community Centre, Signal Centre in Bangor and Greyabbey Village Hall.

Do not leave bottles beside a full bank. Use another available recycling point or report the full facility to the council.
