Hereford Bin Collection: Calendar, Schedule & Missed Reports

Hereford households normally alternate between general rubbish and recycling: the black bin or black sacks are collected fortnightly, while the green recycling bin or clear recycling sacks are collected on the alternate fortnight. Your exact date still depends on your address, so use Herefordshire Council’s postcode checker before putting anything out.

Have the correct bin or sacks at the boundary of the property nearest the public highway by 6:30am. This guide also explains missed collections, recycling rules, the 2026 brown-bin garden service, homes that use sacks, assisted collections, bulky waste and Hereford Household Recycling Centre.

Hereford Bin Collection: 30-Second Answer

Use the official Herefordshire Council collection checker for your exact property. General rubbish and recycling are normally collected every two weeks on alternating weeks, so most standard households have either black general waste or green recycling due in a given week rather than both together.

Put the scheduled bin or sacks at the boundary nearest the public highway by 6:30am. If the collection is genuinely missed, Herefordshire Council says it should be reported as soon as possible and within two working days of the scheduled collection.

How to Check Your Exact Hereford Bin Collection Day

Herefordshire Council’s live collection checker is the correct starting point because the weekday and next collection date depend on the property. The checker also shows the scheduled waste stream and can display garden-waste dates where the household has an active subscription.

  1. Open the official collection-day checker.
Use the council service rather than copying a timetable from another road or an old social-media post.
  2. Enter the full Hereford postcode.
The service searches the council’s property records and then asks you to select the address.
  3. Select the exact property.
Do not stop at the postcode because several addresses in the same postcode can have different operational arrangements.
  4. Read both the date and waste stream.
Save “black rubbish — Monday 21 September” or “green recycling — Monday 28 September”, not simply “Monday”.
  5. Use the downloadable calendar if useful.
The property result can provide a printable waste and recycling calendar, but the live checker remains the best place to recheck changes.
New-build address not appearing? Herefordshire Council warns that new housing developments may not immediately display collection information in the postcode search. Use the council’s new-build property route rather than guessing a neighbouring property’s schedule.

Hereford Bin Schedule: How the Alternate-Week System Works

Herefordshire’s standard household service is straightforward once you know which week your property is on. General rubbish is collected fortnightly and recycling is collected fortnightly on the alternate week.

Service Typical frequency Main container What to remember
General rubbish Every 2 weeks Black bin or approved black-sack arrangement Non-recyclable household waste only.
Household recycling Every 2 weeks Green bin or council clear recycling sacks Normally collected on the alternate week from general rubbish.
Garden waste Every 2 weeks Brown bin or council reusable sacks Only for active paid subscribers.
Week A

Black rubbish week

Present the black general-waste container or the approved black sacks for properties that cannot use wheelie bins.

Week B

Green recycling week

Present the green recycling bin or council-issued clear recycling sacks, with accepted material clean, dry and loose.

Do not calculate future dates from memory alone. Route changes, Christmas arrangements or a property-specific issue can alter the date shown for your address. Use the live lookup when the date matters.

Which Hereford Bin Should You Use?

Black

General rubbish

Use the black bin for ordinary household material that cannot be recycled through the green-bin service or another separate recycling route.

Keep the lid fully closed. Ordinary excess sacks placed next to or on top of the bin are not part of the normal collection.

Green

Mixed recycling

Use the green bin for accepted mixed household recycling. Items should be clean, dry and placed loose in the bin rather than enclosed in a plastic carrier bag.

Brown

Garden waste

The brown container is part of the separate paid garden-waste subscription. It is not an automatic third household collection for every address.

What Can Go in the Green Recycling Bin?

Herefordshire’s green-bin service accepts a broad range of household packaging and paper. From 1 April 2026 the council also added aluminium foil, foil trays, metal or foil-lined tubes and suitable plastic tubes to the household recycling stream.

Common accepted recycling

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Food and drink cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles
  • Suitable plastic tubs and trays
  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Empty aerosols
  • Clean aluminium foil and foil trays
  • Suitable metal or foil-lined tubes
  • Suitable plastic tubes

Keep these out

  • Batteries
  • Vapes
  • Electrical equipment
  • Textiles
  • Food waste
  • Plastic carrier bags used to contain recycling
  • Other material the council does not list as accepted
Best recycling routine: remove food residue, give containers a quick rinse where needed, allow them to dry and place accepted recycling loose in the green bin.

What if the green bin gets an “Oops” tag?

If unacceptable material contaminates the recycling, the crew can leave the bin unemptied and attach a yellow “Oops” tag. Remove the contaminating material and put the green bin out again on its next scheduled recycling collection.

Batteries, Vapes and Small Electricals: Keep Them Out of Both Bins

Herefordshire Council provides a separate household collection route for suitable small electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and vapes. These items should not be hidden inside either the black rubbish container or the green recycling container.

Safe presentation rule

Place accepted items on top of or next to the rubbish or recycling bin or sacks according to the council’s current electrical collection instructions. They are kept separate from the main waste stream for recycling.

Batteries Never place loose household batteries inside the black or green bin.
Vapes Keep them separate because batteries can create a fire risk.
Small electricals Check that the item is eligible for the kerbside electrical route before presenting it.

Hereford Bin-Night Rules: Be Ready by 6:30am

Collection vehicles can arrive from 6:30am, and a household that puts its bin out after the crew has passed normally cannot treat that as a council missed collection.

By 6:30am

Have the scheduled container or sacks ready no later than 6:30am on collection day.

Use the boundary

Place waste at the property boundary nearest the public highway unless an alternative point has been agreed.

Close the lid

Do not overfill the bin. The lid should close and the container should be safe for the crew to move.

No side waste

Extra ordinary rubbish left beside or on top of a standard black bin is not normally collected.

Evening-before option: the council’s address calendars advise residents not to put the bins out until the evening before they are due. That makes it easier to meet the 6:30am deadline without leaving containers on the street unnecessarily early.

Hereford Missed Bin: Check These Points Before Reporting It

A bin that is still full during the morning is not automatically a missed collection. Herefordshire Council advises residents to check whether the crew has completed the road, whether the correct waste stream was due and whether the container was correctly presented.

  1. Check the exact address calendar.
Make sure black rubbish, green recycling or subscribed garden waste was actually due.
  2. Check your neighbours.
If nearby bins are still waiting, the crew may simply be running behind.
  3. Confirm it was ready by 6:30am.
A late presentation is not treated the same as a collection the council genuinely missed.
  4. Look for a tag or sticker.
Crews can record problems such as contamination, overfilling or unsuitable material.
  5. Check access.
Roadworks, parked vehicles, locked access, animals or another obstruction can prevent collection.
  6. Report a genuine miss within two working days.
Use the official council route as soon as possible after confirming the collection qualifies.
What happens after a qualifying report? Herefordshire Council’s collection service standards state that where no reason for non-collection has been recorded and the miss is reported, the council aims to return by the end of the next working day.
You may not be able to submit a missed-bin report while the crew has not yet visited the property or where the crew has already recorded a collection problem on its in-cab system.

What if Your Hereford Home Cannot Use a Wheelie Bin?

Some Herefordshire properties use sacks because storing or moving a wheelie bin would be unsuitable or unsafe. Examples can include flats above shops, properties without suitable storage, difficult gradients or access routes that make normal wheelie-bin handling impractical.

General rubbish

Residents on the approved sack arrangement buy their own black sacks. The council says up to four black sacks can be presented on the general-rubbish collection day.

Recycling

Herefordshire Council supplies clear recycling sacks to properties that are unsuitable for a recycling wheelie bin. The clear sacks are delivered as part of the council’s sack service.

Do not switch yourself from bins to sacks simply because sacks are more convenient. The alternative arrangement applies where the property meets the council’s suitability rules.

Shared and Communal Bins in Hereford

Shared bin stores need slightly different troubleshooting from an ordinary kerbside property. Residents should separate recycling from rubbish, keep the collection route accessible and make sure any gate code or access arrangement needed by the crew remains current.

Keep recycling separate

Contamination in a shared recycling container can affect the whole bin store rather than one household.

Keep access clear

Locked doors, changed access codes or bulky items around communal containers can prevent collection.

Contact building management first

For recurring shared-bin problems, the council advises residents to contact the landlord, managing agent or housing association in the first instance.

Assisted Bin Collections for Residents Who Cannot Move Their Containers

Herefordshire Council may provide an assisted collection where nobody in the household is physically able to move the recycling or general-rubbish bins or sacks to the normal property boundary.

Eligibility is assessed rather than granted automatically. Where the service is agreed, the council establishes a suitable collection location within the property boundary and the resident must keep the access route safe and available to the crew.

Hereford Garden Waste Collection: 2026 Brown-Bin Service

Herefordshire introduced its newer subscription garden-waste service in 2026. The old council green garden-waste sack collection ended in March 2026 and was replaced by a brown wheelie bin or reusable council sacks for subscribed households.

£60 subscription

For the first service year, the charge is £60 per subscription covering 30 March 2026 to 31 March 2027.

Fortnightly collection

Garden waste is normally collected every two weeks across 50 weeks, with a two-week Christmas and New Year break.

240L bin or reusable sacks

A standard subscription uses a 240-litre brown bin. Where a property is unsuitable, the council can provide reusable sacks with equivalent capacity.

Typical accepted garden material

  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge and shrub clippings
  • Leaves
  • Twigs and bark
  • Small plants and weeds
  • Cut flowers
  • Windfall fruit

Keep these out

  • Kitchen food waste
  • Animal waste or bedding
  • Plastic bags, plant pots or trays
  • Bricks, rubble, soil and stones
  • Tree stumps or large branches over the council’s permitted size
Extra capacity: a property can have up to five paid garden-waste subscriptions. Only the council-issued brown bins or reusable sacks registered to the subscription address are collected.

Is Weekly Food-Waste Collection Running in Hereford Yet?

Not as the standard countywide household service in September 2026. Herefordshire Council’s current implementation page says the new separate weekly household food-waste service is planned to begin from September/October 2027 for most properties that can receive a standard kerbside collection.

The future service is expected to use a small indoor kitchen caddy and a lockable outdoor food-waste caddy, with collection on the same day as the property’s rubbish or recycling service.

Do not use an older article saying Herefordshire household food-waste collections started in March 2026. The council reviewed the implementation timetable and approved the later 2027 rollout in July 2026.

Sofas, Beds and Large Household Items

Large furniture and other suitable household items that cannot fit in the normal black bin can use Herefordshire Council’s chargeable bulky-item service. Reuse or retailer take-back can be a better first option when the item is still usable.

Standard household price

The current household bulky service costs £35.45 per three items. Up to 12 items can be included in one collection booking.

Collection window

The council gives the collection day when the booking is made. Bulky collections take place between 7am and 5pm.

Current fridge/freezer restriction

As checked on 19 September 2026, Herefordshire Council is temporarily unable to accept fridges, freezers and cooling appliances through its bulky collection service because of a national processing-capacity issue.

Live restriction: the fridge/freezer suspension is temporary. Recheck the council page before arranging disposal because the restriction can end without this article being republished immediately.

Hereford Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collections

Herefordshire Council normally collects general rubbish and recycling on bank holidays. The standing exceptions are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

When one of those dates affects your round, use the property collection checker for the revised date. This is safer than assuming the collection simply moves one day later because the actual festive arrangement can depend on the scheduled property round.

Garden-waste subscribers should remember that the paid service has a separate two-week break over the Christmas and New Year period.

Hereford Bin Collection FAQs

How do I check my Hereford bin collection day?

Use Herefordshire Council’s collection-day checker, enter your postcode and select the exact property. The result shows the next general-rubbish and recycling dates and can also show garden-waste dates for subscribers.

How often are black bins collected in Hereford?

General rubbish in the black bin is normally collected fortnightly. Green recycling is collected fortnightly on the alternate week.

What time should my Hereford bin be out?

Put the scheduled bin or sacks at the boundary nearest the public highway by 6:30am on collection day. Putting the container out the evening before is the easiest way to avoid missing an early round.

How long do I have to report a missed bin?

A genuine missed rubbish, recycling or subscribed garden-waste collection should be reported as soon as possible and within two working days of the scheduled collection.

What happens after Herefordshire accepts a missed-bin report?

Where no non-collection reason has been recorded and the collection qualifies as missed, the council’s service standards say it aims to return by the end of the next working day.

How much is Herefordshire garden waste collection in 2026?

The first service year costs £60 per subscription and covers 30 March 2026 to 31 March 2027. The service is normally fortnightly, with a two-week Christmas and New Year break.

No. The current council plan is for most eligible households to receive the new separate weekly food-waste service from September or October 2027.

Do I need to book Hereford Household Recycling Centre?

Yes. Hereford Household Recycling Centre is open to Herefordshire residents on a pre-booked basis. The booking requires your address and vehicle registration.

Where is Hereford Household Recycling Centre?

It is at Chapel Road Industrial Estate, Rotherwas, Hereford HR2 6LD. Current seasonal opening hours and material restrictions should be checked before travelling.

Your Best Next Step

Start with the property lookup rather than trying to guess whether this is a black-bin or green-bin week. Save the exact collection date, place the correct container at the boundary by 6:30am and check for contamination or access problems before treating an unemptied bin as missed.

If the service was genuinely missed, use Herefordshire Council’s reporting route within two working days.
