East Ayrshire 2026 task guide

Before checking the date, find out which collection system your property is using

An East Ayrshire bin collection is not one universal timetable in 2026. Some homes have already moved from the recycling trolley to separate wheelie bins, while Kilmarnock and parts of north East Ayrshire are scheduled to begin changing from October.

This page shows exactly what to do after opening the council website: where to look, what the result means, which schedule to follow, when a bin is genuinely missed and what to do if a form or address does not work.

Exact property first Present by 6:30am Do not switch before new bins arrive Bank holidays: check live calendar

What are you trying to do right now?

Choose the task. Each route explains what happens after you open the council service.

Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not East Ayrshire Council and cannot see your property record, change your collection, issue a permit or book a recycling-centre slot. This page explains the process; final live actions are completed through East Ayrshire Council.

First decision

Which East Ayrshire bin service should you follow today?

You still use the trolley

Keep following the existing service

Your collection does not change merely because you have read about the new four-week system.

  • Recycling trolley: weekly
  • Food waste: weekly
  • Green general waste: every three weeks
  • Permitted garden waste: every four weeks in season

Your action: keep using the current property calendar until the trolley is removed and the new bins are delivered.

New bins have arrived

Follow the new wheelie-bin calendar

  • Green general waste: every four weeks
  • Blue-top paper/card: every four weeks
  • Red-top plastics/cans: every four weeks
  • Purple-top glass: every four weeks
  • Food waste: weekly

Your action: stop using an old trolley calendar and check the new exact-address calendar.

Changeover week

Trolley gone but bins not all there yet?

The council says the trolley is removed after its last collection and new bins are delivered Monday to Friday during the changeover week.

There can be a short period when the trolley has gone but the new recycling containers have not all arrived.

Your action: do not improvise another property’s timetable. Use your updated calendar; the first new-service collection will be general waste.

2026 rollout: Cumnock and Netherthird started first in May. Auchinleck south, Dalrymple, Patna, Dalmellington, Bellsbank, Littlemill, Rankinston and Drongan followed from June. The Kilmarnock/north rollout starts from October 2026. Overall completion is expected by spring 2027.

Main user intent

How to check your East Ayrshire bin day without guessing

The correct answer is property-specific. The official page has an address/postcode search and can also show the changeover from the trolley to the new bins.
1

Open “Bin collection days”

Do not start on the general council homepage if you already know your task.

Page heading: Bin collection days
2

Scroll to “Check your bin collection day”

This is the address-specific lookup section.

Look for: Check your bin collection day
3

Enter your home address or postcode

Use your own household address. If several property options are shown, select the exact one.

Enter: home address / postcode
4

Identify whether the result is old or new service

Look at the containers listed. A trolley means the existing service. Separate green, blue-top, red-top and purple-top bins indicate the new service.

5

Read the colour and date together

Do not save only “Tuesday”. Save “red-top plastics — Tuesday 15 September” or the equivalent result shown.

6

Check your changeover week

During 2026 the updated calendar can show when your new service begins. Do not switch schedule before the property actually changes.

7

Use “Subscribe to Calendar” if helpful

The council provides a calendar-subscription feature. If the button does not work correctly, use the council’s dedicated calendar-subscription help rather than manually recreating the year.

Optional: Subscribe to Calendar
8

Put the scheduled container out by 6:30am

Use the designated collection point, keep the lid closed and point wheelie-bin handles towards the roadside where practical.

Address not showing?

Do not choose a similar property

Call Cleaner Communities on 01563 554400, Option 6 if you cannot confidently identify your household record.

Reminder

Write the bin name in the reminder

Use “blue-top paper/card tonight” instead of “bins tonight”. This becomes more important after the four-week rotation starts.

Task complete when: you know the current service + exact container + exact date + 6:30am presentation point.

  • Week 1: green general waste
  • Week 2: blue-top paper/card
  • Week 3: red-top plastics/cans
  • Week 4: purple-top glass

Food waste remains weekly.

First new collection

The council says the first collection after a property’s changeover will always be general waste.

Do not calculate future dates from this four-week example. It explains the rotation order only. Bank holidays, rollout dates and operational changes mean the property calendar remains the source for the real date.

Simple rule: trolley still active = existing schedule. New bins delivered = new schedule.

Changeover-week micro-guide

What happens when the recycling trolley is replaced?

1

Your trolley gets its last scheduled collection

Keep using it normally until that final collection.

2

The council removes the trolley

The council says it will collect the trolley just after its last collection.

3

New bins are delivered Monday to Friday

They may arrive before the trolley is removed or a few days afterwards.

4

You keep your existing general waste bin

The 2026 change does not automatically replace the existing general waste container.

5

You receive three recycling wheelie bins

They separate paper/card, plastics/cans and glass.

6

Your first new-service collection is general waste

Then the rotation moves to paper/card, plastics/cans and glass.

Trolley gone but new recycling bins have not arrived yet?

The council warns that a few days without recycling containers can happen during changeover week.

Use calendar
Want to keep the old trolley?

The council says the trolley will not be serviced in future and encourages residents to return it for recycling.

Return trolley
Have not received any new bins but neighbours have?

Do not simply use their schedule. Check your property calendar, then contact Cleaner Communities if your own changeover appears incomplete.

Check property

Best evidence that you have changed: your new bins have physically arrived and the property calendar shows the new streams.

New-service sorting

What goes in each East Ayrshire bin after changeover?

Green bin

General non-recyclable waste

  • Nappies
  • Pet waste
  • Polystyrene
  • Soiled packaging
  • Hoover dust
  • Items that cannot use another recycling stream

Blue-top bin

Paper and cardboard

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Letters
  • Envelopes
  • Office paper
  • Flattened cardboard
  • Card tubes

Red-top bin

Plastics, cartons and cans

  • Plastic bottles
  • Pots, tubs and trays
  • Cartons
  • Food and drink cans
  • Aerosols
  • Foil
  • Selected soft plastic film/wrappers

Purple-top bin

Glass bottles and jars

  • Food jars
  • Drink bottles
  • Condiment bottles
  • Toiletry bottles
  • No crockery
  • No Pyrex
  • No mirrors/windows
  • No drinking glasses

Green food caddy

Weekly food waste

  • Cooked and uncooked food
  • Fish, meat and bones
  • Dairy and eggshells
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Bread and cakes
  • Rice and pasta
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

Brown bin

Permitted garden waste

  • Grass
  • Leaves
  • Bark
  • Flowers
  • Plants
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Small branches

Current council-page conflict to know about: the 2026 changeover FAQ says selected soft plastic films such as fruit wrappings and biscuit/crisp wrappers will go in the red-top plastics-and-cans bin. Another live new-bin page also lists some plastic film/wrappers within general-waste examples. Because these council pages are not perfectly aligned, use the council’s newest Recycling A–Z or the leaflet supplied with your new bins for a doubtful soft-plastic item.

Still using the trolley?

Do not use the new wheelie-bin colour guide yet. The trolley keeps paper/card, plastics/cartons/cans and glass in its separate compartments.

Contaminated recycling?

Remove the wrong item rather than putting the same contaminated bin out repeatedly.

Sorting workflow: identify service → read container label → check doubtful material in current council A–Z → then bin it.

Missed-bin micro-guide

Bin not emptied: when should you actually report it?

Two official timing statements matter. The green-bin guidance says do not report before 2:30pm. The household customer charter says a container is not deemed missed until the end of the working day. For a single-property miss, the safer approach is to allow the working day to finish before submitting the report.
It is 11am

Different vehicles service different waste streams. Your route can still be in progress.

Wait
It is 2pm

The council specifically says not to report before 2:30pm.

Still wait
It is after 2:30pm but the working day has not ended

The charter says the container is not officially deemed missed until the working day ends.

Safest: wait
The bin went out after 6:30am

The council says it will not normally return when a container was presented late.

Next collection
The lid is open or general side waste is beside it

General waste must fit inside the bin with the lid closed.

Reduce waste
Recycling is contaminated

Remove the wrong materials before the next eligible collection or follow any council instruction attached to the bin.

Correct it
End of working day and all checks pass

This is the point to report a genuine service failure.

Report
1

Open your property calendar

Confirm that exact container was due today.

2

Confirm 6:30am presentation

Check that the container was at the designated point before the crew’s start time.

3

Check the lid and contents

Look for excess waste, contamination or tightly lodged material.

4

Check whether neighbouring properties were also missed

If several nearby containers remain full, a route or access problem may be affecting the area.

5

Open “Report a Waste Problem”

Use the waste-problem service once the collection qualifies as a genuine miss.

Official service: Report a Waste Problem
6

Report promptly

The household customer charter says that if you notify the council within 24 hours of a service failure, it will return within two working days to complete the collection.

Paid garden bin is slightly different: if the permitted brown bin was missed due to a collection error, contact the council and leave it at the kerbside for up to 48 hours. The garden FAQ says the council will aim to return within that period. If waste is frozen or tightly lodged, free the contents and present it on the next scheduled date instead.

Decision: early = wait; presentation/contamination problem = fix; genuine end-of-day miss = report promptly.

Bank holiday micro-guide

How to check an East Ayrshire Bank Holiday collection

Do not automatically move the collection one day later. East Ayrshire directs residents to the live property calendar and publishes festive changes separately when required.
1

Open your collection calendar before the holiday

Do this several days before the expected collection rather than relying on last year’s pattern.

2

Search the exact property again

Do not rely solely on a screenshot or paper calendar saved months earlier.

3

Read the date actually displayed

If the council has changed the collection around the holiday, use that displayed date rather than adding or subtracting days yourself.

4

Check current council notices

Christmas and New Year changes can also be announced on the council website and official social channels.

5

Keep the 6:30am rule

If the collection date changes, the normal early presentation rule still matters unless the council publishes different instructions.

Ordinary Bank Holiday

Start with the live calendar. Do not assume “Monday becomes Tuesday”.

Christmas / New Year

Festive arrangements are published separately when necessary. Recheck nearer December.

Garden waste

The seasonal garden service ends in November, so a December brown-bin date should not be assumed from the normal four-week cycle.

Garden-season wording: current East Ayrshire pages use both “February to November” and “March to November” descriptions. The detailed 2026 permit FAQ says the first four-week cycle begins Monday 23 February 2026. Use your property calendar for the actual first and final brown-bin collection dates rather than relying on the month label alone.

Bank Holiday rule: exact property calendar first, current council notice second, old timetable never.

1

Check that your property is on a garden-waste route

The service is for Council Tax-rated domestic properties assigned to a brown-bin route.

2

Create an Our East Ayrshire account

Register with a valid email address and verify the email before continuing.

Needed: account + verified email
3

Open Garden Waste Permit

Use the official permit service from your account.

4

Search the address by postcode

The council warns that the system is sensitive to manually typed addresses. Search by postcode first instead of manually recreating the address.

5

Select how many bins need permits

The fee is £47.50 for each bin. There is no stated limit on permitted brown bins, but each one needs its own paid permit.

6

Pay and return to the platform

The council specifically asks users to return to the platform after payment so the purchase is fully completed.

7

Wait for the sticker

The sticker can take up to 21 days. The bin can still be collected because the crew has the permit information.

8

Check the property’s brown-bin date

Present the bin at the normal collection point by 6:30am.

Address not recognised in permit form?

Search using the postcode. If it still fails, call 01563 554400 Option 6 instead of manually inventing a slightly different address.

Call council
Already have a brown bin but system says you are not on a route?

Email waste@east-ayrshire.gov.uk or call Option 6 with the property details so the record can be checked.

Fix record
Sticker has not arrived after 21 days?

Request a replacement permit through waste@east-ayrshire.gov.uk or by phone.

Replace sticker
Joining halfway through the season?

The council still charges the full annual fee.

Full £47.50
More garden waste than fits?

Permit holders can currently buy biodegradable bags for £1 each, purchased in multiples of five.

Extra bags

No refund for missed garden collections. If a genuine collection error occurs, contact the council and leave the bin out for up to 48 hours while it attempts a return collection.

Successful signup: property recognised → correct number of bins → payment completed → platform confirms purchase → calendar checked.

Council Tax reference fails?

Check that your Our East Ayrshire profile address exactly matches the Council Tax account address, then contact Customer Services if verification still fails.

Van or trailer?

Vans and trailers can visit with household waste but can be inspected to make sure no commercial waste is present.

Do not drive to the centre first and try to sort the permit at the gate. Complete permit + vehicle + booking before travelling.

Communal properties

Flat or communal bin user? Do not copy the four-wheelie-bin house setup

East Ayrshire says communal properties are being surveyed to identify what changes are required under the new system. A flat therefore should not assume that the same four individual wheelie bins will appear at every property.

Use your exact property calendar

Search the flat or block address rather than a nearby house.

Read communal labels

Use the labels on the actual communal containers supplied for your building.

Changeover not obvious?

Contact Cleaner Communities instead of guessing when the block moves to the new arrangement.

Do not obstruct access

Keep communal storage areas accessible to the collection crew and avoid leaving bulky items around the containers.

Flat resident rule: exact block instructions beat a generic house colour/frequency chart.

Space, extra bins & assisted collection

What if four bins will not fit, you need extra capacity or cannot move them?

No outdoor space

Ask for a property survey

Email communitywasteofficer@east-ayrshire.gov.uk. A Community Waste Officer can survey the available space.

New recycling bins too large

Request smaller containers

Smaller paper/card and plastics/cans bins can be requested. The council says the glass bin is already its smallest available size.

Do not want a glass bin

Email the Waste Officer

Clearly state the request in the email subject and include the property address.

Extra recycling

Ask for additional recycling capacity

Additional recycling containers can be requested and authorised additional recycling bins are not charged under the 2026 changeover FAQ.

Larger green bin

Waste audit required

A larger general-waste bin is considered individually. The council requires a waste diary/audit and expects the household to use available kerbside recycling including food waste.

Unable to move bins

Assisted pull-out service

If you cannot present bins and no able-bodied person lives with you, ask Cleaner Communities for an eligibility assessment.

1

Call or email Cleaner Communities

Explain the actual problem: storage, capacity, disability, replacement or missing container.

2

Use the correct assessment

Space problem → Community Waste Officer. Larger residual bin → waste audit. Mobility problem → assisted-collection assessment.

3

Follow the approved arrangement

Assisted households receive a pull-out marker so crews know the agreed collection arrangement.

Already on assisted collection? East Ayrshire says an existing assisted service transfers automatically when the property changes to the new bin system.

Choose by problem: no space → survey; recycling capacity → extra recycling bin; residual capacity → audit; physical difficulty → assisted collection.

East Ayrshire bin collection FAQs

How do I check my East Ayrshire bin collection day?

Open East Ayrshire Council’s Bin collection days page, scroll to Check your bin collection day, enter your home address or postcode and use the exact property result. Check whether your home is still on the recycling trolley service or has received the new wheelie bins, then save the container and date together.

Should I use the new four-week schedule before my new East Ayrshire bins arrive?

No. East Ayrshire Council says your collection will not change until you receive the new bins. Continue using the existing recycling trolley calendar until your property’s changeover takes place.

What time should East Ayrshire bins be put out?

Bins and other containers should normally be at the designated collection point by 6:30am. The household customer charter asks residents to point wheelie-bin handles towards the roadside and keep lids closed.

When should I report a missed East Ayrshire bin?

Do not report before 2:30pm. The household customer charter also says a container is not deemed missed until the end of the working day. Check the exact collection date, 6:30am presentation, lid, contents and access before reporting a genuine miss.

Do East Ayrshire bin collections automatically move by one day on bank holidays?

Do not assume a standard one-day change. Use the live property calendar and check East Ayrshire Council’s current service notices. Christmas and New Year changes are published separately when required.
