Use the council calendar, then know exactly what to do next
The useful answer to a South Norfolk bin collection search is not a long description of council services. You need the exact property date, the correct container, the set-out deadline and a clear route if something goes wrong.
This guide therefore follows the same order a resident actually uses: open My Area, select the address, read the result, prepare the bin, decide whether an unemptied bin is genuinely missed and then open the correct report or paid service.
South Norfolk collection dashboard
If you only need the essentials, start with these five rules and then jump to your task.
Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not South Norfolk Council. Live property dates, reports, subscriptions, payments and bookings stay on the council’s own services. This page explains which service to use and what to do after you open it.
Phase 1 is live — Phase 2 timing is currently being reviewed
Weekly collections are already underway for households in the first phase.
The current timetable is being reviewed. Wait for the confirmed start date rather than relying on older material.
Once active, food waste is collected every week on the same day as the main bin.
The food vehicle may reach the property hours before or after the rubbish/recycling lorry.
What to do: open the food-waste page → use the postcode checker → if you are Phase 1 and never received containers, contact the waste team with your name and address.
How to check your exact South Norfolk collection day
Open Find your bin collection day
Open the official South Norfolk and Broadland Find your bin collection day page.
Open My Area
Select Click here to find your bin collection days to open My Area.
Enter the full postcode
Type the full postcode for the property. My Area only accepts addresses in Broadland or South Norfolk.
Select the exact property
Choose the correct house or property from the returned address options.
Read upcoming collection dates
Check the upcoming collection dates and open the full calendar if you need to plan further ahead.
Prepare the correct container
Mark the bin with the house name or number and put it at the collection point by 6:30am.
If My Area says the postcode is invalid: first confirm that the property is actually inside South Norfolk or Broadland. Do not choose a similar address from another district just to reach a result.
Save this: “Recycling — Thursday 3 September — out Wednesday night.” The bin name matters as much as the date.
How to use the calendar result correctly
Use this for the standard household rubbish container. Do not assume the next Thursday is also rubbish week.
Recycling normally alternates with rubbish, but always follow the date shown for the selected property.
Relevant only where the property has the paid garden-waste service.
Once the service is active for the address, it is weekly on the same main collection day but uses a separate food-waste vehicle.
Use it when planning holidays or several weeks ahead. Recheck close to the date if disruption has been announced.
Do not calculate future dates by repeatedly adding 14 days. Bank holidays, operational disruption, new housing and route changes can break a manually calculated pattern.
Fast routine: property → upcoming date → bin type → 6:30am → reminder.
The four South Norfolk household collection routes
Household rubbish — fortnightly
Standard residual household waste that cannot use recycling, food, garden, electrical, bulky or recycling-centre routes.
Household recycling — fortnightly
Clean, dry and loose accepted paper, cardboard, cans, tins, foil, plastic containers, cartons and glass bottles or jars.
Food waste — weekly where the service has started
All eligible food waste goes into the kitchen caddy, then the 23-litre outdoor food bin.
Brown garden waste — fortnightly paid service
Optional £73-per-bin annual subscription for eligible garden material.
Useful distinction: “every two weeks” does not mean every waste stream is collected together. Rubbish and recycling usually alternate.
How to know whether your weekly food collection has started
Open the South Norfolk food-waste page
Do not use the Broadland food-waste page; the two districts are at different rollout stages.
Use “Check when your collections will start”
Enter the postcode to identify the phase for the property.
If you are Phase 1, collection is already live
Phase 1 began in the week commencing 27 July 2026.
If you are in the next phase, wait for confirmation
The council says the next-phase timetable is being reviewed and residents will receive notice before collections begin.
Communal property?
Most communal properties are not included in the standard postcode checker. The council will contact those properties separately as tailored arrangements are introduced.
What should arrive before your first collection?
Kitchen caddy
Small indoor container for food scraps.
Outdoor food bin
Put this container outside for weekly collection, not the kitchen caddy.
Caddy bags
Use the supplied plastic liners or another suitable plastic bag when the original supply runs out.
Using the service after it starts
Line the indoor caddy
Fit one of the supplied liners around the rim before adding food.
Add food — not packaging
Raw and cooked food, meat, fish, bones, dairy, fruit, vegetables, tea bags, coffee grounds, bread, pasta, rice and leftovers are accepted.
Tie the liner
When the kitchen caddy needs emptying, tie the top and put the bag into the outdoor food bin.
Lock the outdoor handle upright
The upright locked position helps reduce spills and pest access.
Put it beside the main bin by 6:30am
Food is weekly, so it goes out whether the main collection that week is rubbish or recycling.
Your main bin was emptied but food was not? Do not immediately file a miss. Food waste is collected by a separate vehicle and may arrive later.
WAIT. Leave the food bin out because the dedicated food vehicle may still be on its round.
REPORT. If the food bin remains full, use the missed-bin form.
LEAVE IT OUT. Current food-waste guidance says the council will return within five working days.
Phase 1 but no caddies arrived? Check the postcode first, then email wasteadmin@southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk with the resident name and address.
Micro rule: postcode phase → caddies arrive → food only → outdoor bin locked → 6:30am → separate vehicle → report only after end of day.

Residual waste
Use the rubbish bin only after removing material that has a recycling, food, garden, electrical, bulky or specialist disposal route.
Recycling must pass all three checks
Rinse containers and remove leftover food.
Put recycling directly in the wheelie bin, not inside carrier bags or black sacks.
Keep the lid closed and avoid leaving wet cardboard beside the bin.
Common mistakes to catch before collection
Carrier bags & film
Do not use them to bag mixed household recycling.
Food inside packaging
Separate the food first. Food waste has its own route where the service is active.
DIY material
Rubble, electricals and specialist waste need another route rather than the household recycling bin.
Wet cardboard
Do not leave cardboard beside the recycling bin in poor weather because wet cardboard may not be recyclable.
Before closing the lid: clean → dry → loose → correct material.
Will the crew be able to empty this bin?
Check My Area rather than relying on what happened two weeks ago.
The council recommends putting it out the evening or night before.
It should be accessible and visible from the road unless an assisted arrangement exists.
A raised lid can result in refusal.
Wet, compacted or heavy waste such as rubble can make the container unsafe to move.
The council only empties bins supplied by the correct district council.
South Norfolk asks residents to label their bins to help crews identify the correct property.
30-second routine: date → contents → lid → weight → access → property number → out overnight.
South Norfolk bin not emptied: wait, fix or report?
WAIT. The normal rubbish/recycling collection window is still open.
DO NOT REPORT. A late container does not qualify for a return collection.
FIX. Remove excess material so the lid closes; use the next scheduled collection.
FIX. Remove contamination before the next scheduled collection.
FIX. Remove wet, compacted or dense waste so one person can manoeuvre the bin safely.
FIX ACCESS. The crew needs a visible, safe route from the public highway.
NOT A MISSED BIN. Side waste has separate rules and is never guaranteed.
REPORT. Submit the missed-bin form before the end of the following day.
Confirm the bin was due
Check My Area and make sure that exact rubbish, recycling, food waste or garden waste container was scheduled.
Check the 6:30am presentation rule
Confirm the bin was at the edge of the public highway, visible from the road and ready by 6:30am.
Check for a rejection reason
Make sure the lid was fully closed and the bin was not contaminated, too heavy, obstructed or an incorrect non-council container.
Allow the collection window to finish
Ordinary rubbish and recycling collections can take place until 4pm. Food waste is collected by a separate vehicle and may arrive later than the main bin.
Report within the deadline
Report a genuine missed collection on the scheduled day or the following day because the council will not normally return for a later report.
Deadline matters: once the same-day/next-day window has passed, South Norfolk says it will not return for an ordinary missed-bin report.
Fast decision: before 4pm → wait. Presentation problem → fix. Eligible after 4pm → report today or tomorrow.
Can you leave extra bags beside the wheelie bin?
South Norfolk crews may occasionally take a maximum of two additional rubbish bags if vehicle capacity allows.
Clear sack / suitable container
Keep it clean and dry. The container should be small enough to fit inside the wheelie bin.
Dry weather only
A cardboard box can hold suitable extra recycling, but not breakable items, and wet cardboard may be refused.
No promise: collection vehicles must prioritise scheduled wheelie bins. If the lorry is near capacity, crews can leave side waste behind.
If overflow happens every fortnight: move recycling and food waste into their correct services, then check the additional-bin route.
South Norfolk garden waste: what £73 gets you
Per brown garden-waste bin.
Except for the Christmas and New Year suspension.
New subscriptions started during the financial year are reduced for the remaining period.
The council currently allows a property to order as many paid brown bins as required.
Accepted brown-bin material
Grass & leaves
Grass cuttings, ordinary leaves and weeds.
Hedges & plants
Suitable hedge/shrub clippings, flowers and plant prunings.
Twigs & small branches
Small branches up to around four inches in diameter.
Do not put these in the brown bin
Food waste
Food and garden material are now processed differently. Use weekly food collection when active.
Soil / rubble
Heavy material can make the bin unsafe and needs another route.
Plastic bags
Put garden waste loose into the wheelie bin.
Animal waste
Do not use the paid garden bin for pet waste or animal bedding.
Restricted plants
Current exclusions include several invasive or toxic species such as Japanese Knotweed, Ragwort, Hemlock and Himalayan Balsam.
Only the bin is collected. Extra garden waste beside the brown bin is not taken. Keep the lid closed and the container light enough for safe mechanical collection.
Moving within South Norfolk? Current guidance says take the brown bin with you and report the change of address so the service can continue at the new property.
Before paying: £73 annual price → confirm address → choose number of bins → pay → use only accepted loose garden material.
Small electricals and batteries: exact collection process
Book online or by phone
Use the South Norfolk electrical/battery form or call 01508 533830.
Use tied carrier-sized bags
Each bag must be standard carrier size or smaller. Large bin liners, black sacks and charity bags are not accepted.
Separate electricals and batteries
Electrical items go in one bag; eligible household batteries go in another because they are processed separately.
Remove removable batteries
If a battery can be safely removed from an electrical item, put it in the separate battery bag. Leave built-in batteries in the item.
Use weatherproof bags
The bags are not returned, so use suitable plastic bags that keep electrical items dry.
Put bags out by 7am on the booked day
This special collection uses a 7am presentation deadline rather than the standard 6:30am wheelie-bin deadline.
Per booked collection.
Per domestic household.
The initial trial is aimed at households with individual bins.
Battery-only booking? Current South Norfolk rules say household batteries are accepted when included with an electrical booking, not as a standalone battery collection.
Too large for a carrier bag? TVs, monitors, fridges, washing machines and other large appliances need a recycling-centre, reuse or bulky-waste route.
Book → separate → maximum six → weatherproof → kerbside by 7am.
South Norfolk bulky waste prices and booking decisions
Current standard domestic charge.
Base fee plus one additional £7 item.
Current published charge.
Maximum standard domestic booking size.
Before paying, sort the item into the right route
Check reuse first. If unsuitable, use the domestic bulky-waste booking.
Compare retailer take-back, reuse, recycling centre and bulky collection.
Not standard bulky waste. Fixtures and fittings such as bathroom suites are excluded.
Not standard bulky waste. Building fixtures need another disposal route.
Not standard bulky waste. These are among the current excluded items.
Relevant benefits? South Norfolk says a reduced domestic bulky-waste fee may be available for qualifying residents.
Paying somebody else to remove waste? Check that they are a registered waste carrier and keep their details. Householders can still face consequences if waste is later fly-tipped by an unlicensed collector.
Reuse → eligibility → count items → check benefit reduction → pay only after confirming the item is accepted.
Assisted collection: who qualifies and what happens next
Basic eligibility
This is a core eligibility condition.
Can support an assisted-collection application.
Can support an application where normal bin movement is not manageable.
Can qualify where the condition prevents normal bin presentation.
The council includes this situation in its current eligibility guidance.
After you apply
Application reviewed
The council aims to review an assisted-collection request within five working days.
Crew collects from the property
Once approved, crew members retrieve the bins, empty them and return them to the same agreed location.
Keep bins easy to find
Containers should ideally be at the front of the property and safely accessible.
Temporary help is possible
Short-term situations such as a broken leg can qualify when the household meets the normal conditions.
Service is reviewed every two years
When a renewal request arrives, complete it within 21 days or assisted collections can stop.
Food waste: if an assisted collection is already in place for rubbish and recycling, the council says it also applies to the outdoor food-waste bin.
Recurring mobility problem → assisted service. One correctly presented bin left behind → missed-bin route.
Lost, stolen or damaged South Norfolk bin
Report the bin problem
Use the lost, found, stolen and damaged-bin service.
Damaged bin? Keep using it if possible
Current guidance says continue using the container until it is repaired or replaced.
Leave it at the normal collection point
After reporting a damaged bin, keep it visible from the road so the repair/replacement request can be completed.
South Norfolk target
The council currently aims to repair or replace a South Norfolk bin within ten working days.
Bin found after reporting it lost? Tell the council as soon as possible so an unnecessary replacement is not delivered.
Useful habit: permanently mark the house number/name on every container to reduce mix-ups after collection.
Check additional capacity instead of relying on side waste
South Norfolk considers the standard rubbish container sufficient for a normal household over the fortnightly cycle.
A larger recycling container can be supplied without charge to encourage additional recycling.
Additional rubbish capacity
Extra rubbish capacity is eligibility-based rather than automatically issued because a bin is regularly full.
Waiting for a swap?
Leave the existing bin at the normal collection point when instructed. A replacement request can be closed if the old bin is not available for exchange.
Check the waste first: once food waste is live at the property, food should move out of the rubbish bin. Recycling should also be separated before applying for more refuse capacity.
Capacity order: recycling → food → garden → electricals/bulky → then assess genuine residual rubbish.
Set up the new South Norfolk Council app correctly
Delete the old South Norfolk Bin Collections app
The council asks existing users to remove the old version.
Search “South Norfolk Council”
Find the new council app in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Register using the address or postcode
Use the exact property rather than a nearby address.
Check reminders and preferences
Enable useful notifications so collection-day changes can reach the household.
Address missing in the app? Email wasteadmin@southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk instead of registering another property.
Reliable setup: My Area for confirmation + app for reminders and disruption alerts.
Nearby Norfolk addresses can use completely different rules
A Norwich address does not use South Norfolk’s My Area calendar just because it is geographically close. Always check the local authority before following another district’s bin colours, times or missed-bin deadline.
Boundary check: confirm the council first; then use the matching postcode calendar.

South Norfolk bin collection FAQs
How do I check my South Norfolk bin collection day?
Open the official Find your bin collection day page, choose the link into My Area, enter the full postcode, select the exact property and read the upcoming collection dates. My Area also provides a full calendar for the selected address.
What time should South Norfolk bins be put out?
Put the correct container at the collection point by 6:30am. South Norfolk recommends putting bins out the evening or night before because a collection round can reach the property from 6:30am.
How often are rubbish and recycling collected in South Norfolk?
Rubbish and recycling are generally collected every two weeks. For most properties recycling is collected one week and rubbish the next, but the exact property calendar should be checked before each collection.
When should I report a missed South Norfolk bin?
A genuine missed collection must be reported on the scheduled collection day or the following day. Ordinary rubbish and recycling can be collected until 4pm, so do not report before the normal collection window has finished.
Has weekly food waste collection started in South Norfolk?
Yes for Phase 1 households. Phase 1 started in the week commencing 27 July 2026. The council’s current live page says the Phase 2 timetable is being reviewed, so households in the next phase should use the postcode checker and wait for direct confirmation rather than relying on an older published date.
What should I do if my South Norfolk food bin is still full?
Food waste is collected on the same day as rubbish or recycling but by a separate vehicle, so leave the outdoor food bin out until the end of the day. If it is still full, report it and leave it available. The council says it will return within five working days.
How much is South Norfolk garden waste collection?
The current garden waste service costs £73 per brown bin per year. New customers joining part way through the financial year pay a pro-rata amount, and the brown bin is collected every two weeks except during the Christmas and New Year suspension.
Can I put extra rubbish bags beside my South Norfolk bin?
South Norfolk crews may occasionally take a maximum of two additional rubbish bags, but this is not guaranteed and depends on available vehicle capacity. Side waste that is not taken is not treated as a missed-bin collection.
How much does South Norfolk bulky waste collection cost?
The current domestic fee is £61.50 for one to three items, £68.50 for four items, £75.50 for five items and £82.50 for six items. Residents receiving relevant benefits may qualify for a reduced fee.
Can South Norfolk collect small electrical items from my home?
Yes. South Norfolk currently operates a free booked trial for small electrical items and household batteries. Items must fit in tied standard carrier-sized bags, electricals and batteries must be separated, the maximum is six bags and a household can make one booking per month.
