Independent resident guide for Breckland collection dates, bin colours, missed collections, food waste, garden waste and disposal routes.
Open the checker, find your property and know exactly what to do next
A Breckland bin collection cannot be checked safely from a town name alone. The useful answer comes from the exact property result inside My Breckland.
This guide follows the same journey a resident takes on the council website: postcode, exact address, waste-service result, calendar, missed-bin checks and the right disposal route.
What are you trying to do?
Choose the task. You do not need to read the whole article first.
28 AUG 2026
Two live operational points: Breckland’s current pages carry a warning that kerbside battery/electrical collections are suspended following a fire at a local waste facility. The current bin-order page also warns that if an online payment shows an error, residents should not immediately pay again; allow up to five working days for the payment to clear first.
Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not Breckland Council or its waste contractor. Use official services for property dates, reports, orders, payments and bookings.
Find the exact task
Each section ends with a specific next action.
How to use the Breckland bin collection checker
This is the section you are trying to reach. It contains the property-level waste service information and links to the calendar, current collection issues and bin problem form.
Open the Breckland collection checker
Open Breckland Council’s “Find your bin collection date and calendar” page.
Find “Address Details”
Scroll until the postcode field appears.
Enter the complete postcode
Use the postcode for the actual property, then click Find Address.
Select the exact property
Choose the house number, flat or property name. Do not choose a nearby address simply because it appears first.
Read “Your Waste Services information”
Use the property result to identify the current collection information and Bank Holiday dates.
Do not close the page yet: the next section explains what information you should save from the result.
What should you do inside “Your Waste Services”?
Read the collection
Identify the next container and actual collection date.
Save colour + date
Write “BLACK — 8 Sept” rather than only “Tuesday”.
Return to this screen
Use the collection-issues or problem-report route linked from the property result.
Check for any Bin Collection Issues
Use this before filing a missed-bin form. A whole route may already have an operational problem.
Download your bin calendar
Useful for planning, but the live property page and current service notice should override an old download.
Report a problem with your bin online
Use only after checking the scheduled date, 6.30am presentation and rejection-tag status.
Find a Norfolk Recycling Centre
Use this when the item cannot use the normal black, green or brown kerbside service.
House-share message: “BLACK recycling — Thursday — boundary by 6.30am” prevents far more mistakes than sending only a screenshot.
Useful result = property + bin colour + actual date + collection point.
How black, green and brown Breckland weeks fit together
Household recycling
Use the exact property calendar to see the relevant dates.
Household rubbish
The green-bin collection falls on the alternating household week.
Runs with green week
Breckland’s 2026–27 calendar says Week 1 garden collections take place in the same week as green household rubbish.
Runs with black week
Week 2 garden collections take place in the same week as black recycling.
Same week does not always mean same weekday. Use the property result for your actual brown-bin collection date.
Calendar habit: save black, green and brown dates separately rather than building your own assumed A/B pattern.
Which Breckland bin should this item use?
Paper, cardboard or cartons
Black recycling bin. Keep paper and cardboard clean and dry.
Glass bottle or jar
Black recycling bin. Empty it first.
Tin, can, clean foil or aerosol
Black recycling bin.
Plastic bottle, pot, tub or tray
Black recycling bin when it matches the current accepted list.
Nappy or ordinary non-recyclable rubbish
Green household rubbish bin.
Grass, leaves or hedge clippings
Brown garden bin only when the property has an active subscription.
Food leftovers after rollout
Blue food-waste container once the Autumn 2026 service has started for your household.
Battery or electrical item
Do not put it in black or green bins. Current kerbside battery/electrical collections are temporarily suspended, so check the live council disposal route.
Unusual item? Do not guess from material colour. Check the current Breckland/Norfolk disposal guidance before binning it.
How to avoid getting the black recycling bin rejected
Recycling should not be hidden inside ordinary bags.
Wet paper/card cannot be processed reliably and should not be left beside the bin.
These are on the current black-bin “No thanks” list.
These must stay out of the black recycling bin.
Breckland currently accepts extra suitable recycling beside the black bin in a clear plastic bag.
Black-bin formula: clean + dry + accepted + not bagged inside the bin.
Green bin full? Check what is taking the space first
General non-recyclable rubbish
Bag household rubbish securely inside the green bin.
Recycling inside?
Move accepted paper, glass, cans, cartons and plastic containers to the black recycling bin.
Food inside after rollout?
Move it to the weekly blue food-waste service once that service starts.
Garden waste inside?
Garden waste does not belong in either the green or black bin.
No ordinary side waste: Breckland says only contents inside the green household bin are collected.
Missed green bin? Current green-bin guidance says report a genuine missed collection within 48 hours of the collection day after completing the normal eligibility checks.
Space-saving order: recycling out → garden waste out → food waste out when live → rubbish inside green bin.
Food-waste collection: what happens before and after launch
Keep using current bins
Do not change household routines because of an old “summer 2026” announcement.
Watch for your start details
Breckland says residents will be told when containers will arrive and when collections start.
Use food bin weekly
Move accepted food from green rubbish into the new blue food-waste service.
Blue kitchen caddy
Used inside the home to collect food scraps.
Blue food bin
The indoor caddy is due to be delivered inside the larger outdoor bin.
Food collection
Food waste will be collected every week.
Shared blue container
Flats and communal properties are expected to use individual 7L caddies plus a larger shared outside bin.
Accepted once the food service starts.
Accepted in the new food-waste stream.
Remove packaging and sort it through the correct recycling or rubbish route.
Breckland’s current February 2026 FAQ says no.
Do not start early: wait for your Breckland delivery/start communication.
Use the same checks as Breckland’s missed-bin form
Check My Breckland first.
Check the Bin Collection Service Announcements page.
Use the exact property result or current calendar rather than assuming the normal weekday.
A whole-road issue can mean the route itself is delayed.
If the answer is no, Breckland says it does not count as a missed collection and the crew cannot return.
If yes, it is a rejected bin rather than a missed bin.
Confirm the correct bin and collection day
Use My Breckland to make sure the container was actually due.
Check service issues and Bank Holiday changes
Look for an operational service announcement or a revised holiday date.
Check the rest of the street
If several nearby bins remain unemptied, the route may be delayed.
Confirm the bin was out before 6.30am
Bins presented after 6.30am do not count as missed collections.
Check for a rejection tag
Tagged bins are not classed as missed. Remove the incorrect items and present the bin on its next scheduled collection.
Only continue to report when: correct date + no known route issue + out before 6.30am + no tag.
A tag means fix the problem, not file a missed-bin report
Black recycling tag
Common contamination examples shown by Breckland include bagged waste, textiles and garden/food waste.
Brown garden tag
Common problems include soil, food waste and bagged waste.
Green bin problem
Check overfilling, wrong-week presentation and prohibited garden or DIY waste.
Read tag
Identify what the crew says is wrong.
Remove problem
Take out contamination or excess material.
Wait for next scheduled date
Tagged bins are normally emptied on the next collection once corrected.
Operational help: Serco Customer Services — 0330 109 9220; email norfolkwaste@serco.com.
Tag = rejection reason. Do not create a missed-bin report for the same event.
How to join, renew or use the Breckland brown-bin service
Per subscribed garden bin.
Runs from the service start or renewal date.
The terms say a new subscription can take up to 10 working days to process.
Use the allocated property schedule.
Open garden service
Choose the order/renew option from the council page.
Check your property
Confirm the address and brown-bin service requirement.
Wait for service to activate
Allow the processing period before expecting collection.
Accepted garden materials.
Not accepted in the brown garden bin.
Current brown-bin guidance says kitchen waste should not be placed in this service.
It is not collected through the ordinary brown-bin round.
The current Breckland order/renew page says that if an online payment returns an error message, do not immediately pay again. Allow up to five working days for the payment to clear before retrying, or contact the Customer Team on 01362 656870.
Before setting it out: active subscription + correct calendar + loose accepted garden material + boundary by 6.30am.
Choose the correct bin-order route before paying
Current charge for a new black recycling bin and green rubbish bin for an eligible new property.
Current delivery/administration charge for an approved 240L size request.
Current charge for an approved 360L larger bin.
Current stated delivery target for replacement/new bins.
Breckland says repair/replacement is free.
Contact Serco to order and pay for the replacement.
An administration/delivery charge applies.
Check with the developer first because bins may already have been ordered.
Identify cause first: wear / crew damage / resident damage / loss / new property / size change all follow different payment rules.
Cannot move the bin to the boundary?
Who may qualify
Elderly or infirm residents and residents with a short- or long-term illness who cannot manage normal bin presentation.
Important eligibility condition
There must be no other able-bodied person living at the property who can put the bins out.
Collection morning
From 6.30am, leave gates unlocked so the crew can reach the normal storage location.
Pets
Keep pets secure so collection staff can safely access the garden or yard.
Use this service when: physically presenting the bin is the recurring problem.
Before paying for a sofa, mattress or appliance collection
Current charge for the first one to three accepted items.
Current extra charge for each further accepted item.
Breckland asks residents to allow at least two weeks because this is not an immediate collection service.
Items must be at the property boundary, visible and accessible.
Count each item
A mattress and bed frame are separate pieces.
Check accepted list
Do this before payment because DIY and hazardous items are excluded.
Book ahead
Choose the available collection date and pay in advance.
Notify the council at least 48 hours before the collection.
The current page allows changes up to 12 noon on the day before collection.
The crew will not go through gates or doors to retrieve bulky items.
Common exclusions: asbestos, gas bottles, builders’ rubble, DIY materials, windows/glass, vehicle parts, pianos/organs and garden refuse are not part of the ordinary bulky service.
Booking formula: count → check acceptance → allow 2 weeks → pay → present at boundary by 6.30am.
When should you stop looking for a bin and book a recycling-centre visit?
DIY / rubble
Do not force these materials into the normal green household rubbish bin.
Electrical item
Use the current approved electrical disposal route, especially while Breckland’s kerbside electrical collection is suspended.
Item not accepted by bulky service
Check the Norfolk centre’s material rules before loading the vehicle.
Large amount of excess waste
A booked recycling-centre trip can be more appropriate than waiting for ordinary kerbside capacity.
Open Norfolk’s recycling-centre finder
Choose the most suitable centre for your location and material.
Read the individual site information
Check opening days and whether the material is accepted there.
Book before bringing waste
Norfolk County Council currently requires a booking when bringing waste to a recycling centre.
Check for emergency closure
Do another live check before travelling, especially after severe weather or an operational incident.
Before driving: right site + accepted waste + booking + current opening status.
How to read changed collection dates correctly
Open exact address
Use My Breckland rather than assuming a district-wide shift.
Look for revised date
An asterisk on the PDF identifies an actual changed collection date.
Use that date literally
It can fall on a different weekday, so do not automatically add one day yourself.
Holiday rule: use the date shown by Breckland, not a guessed “Monday becomes Tuesday” pattern.
Five official Breckland actions
These visible actions match the `ItemList` JSON-LD at the top of the page.
Breckland Council, Serco and Norfolk County Council: who does what?
Breckland Council
Local authority responsible for the household collection services, forms, policy and resident information described on this page.
Serco
Operational service provider used for collection enquiries including 0330 109 9220 and norfolkwaste@serco.com.
Norfolk County Council
Runs the county recycling-centre network rather than Breckland’s household kerbside rounds.
Schema note: the custom `GovernmentOrganization` entity refers to Breckland Council only. BinCollectionGuide.org is not represented as an official authority.
