Independent Braintree household waste micro-guide: exact dates, new 2026 collection cycle, missed-bin reporting and separate waste services.
Find your exact bin day and finish the task correctly
Braintree bin collection changed from 1 June 2026. Grey general waste is normally every three weeks, food waste is weekly, while blue-lidded mixed recycling and red-lidded paper/card alternate so each recycling bin is normally collected every four weeks.
Instead of sending you to a council link with no explanation, this page shows what to click, what to select, what result to look for and what to do when the website, bin or collection does not behave as expected.
Braintree bin collection: answer first
Start with your exact property rather than a town-wide timetable. Enter your postcode, select the address and save the date together with the waste stream.
Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not Braintree District Council or Essex County Council. Use this page to understand the process; complete live dates, reports, payments and bookings through the official services linked in the relevant task.
Current as of 28 August 2026: Braintree District Council is displaying a technical-issue notice for its waste-date lookup and calendar-download function.
If the checker fails: do not choose a random nearby property. Check the Waste Management Portal in My Account, read current service updates, use the latest property-specific calendar you already received, or contact Customer Services on 01376 552525.
What are you trying to do?
Choose the resident task. You do not need to read the entire page.
What to do after opening the Braintree bin-day website
Enter the full postcode
Use the postcode for the exact property whose household collection you need.
Select “Lookup”
The website then loads the properties linked to that postcode.
Select your exact address
Choose the correct house, flat or named property. Do not select the nearest-looking address just to obtain a date.
Select “Next”
Continue to the schedule linked to that property.
Write the waste stream beside the date
Save “Blue mixed recycling — 8 September”, not simply “bins Tuesday”. Different streams now have different frequencies.
Bin-night reminder: put containers out no earlier than the evening before and make sure they are ready at the usual collection point by 7am.
Website not loading? The council currently has a technical notice on the date lookup. Use My Account/Waste Portal or your latest property-specific calendar rather than guessing from another address.
Your useful result should contain: exact property + date + waste stream. If one of those is missing, do not treat the result as your final calendar.
How the new Braintree collection cycle actually works
Non-recyclable general household waste.
Mixed recycling. It alternates with the red-lidded recycling stream.
Clean, dry paper and cardboard.
Put food recycling out every week.
Only where the property has a paid garden subscription.
Recycling frequency wording can be confusing: recycling is available every two weeks overall because blue and red alternate, but each individual recycling bin is normally collected once every four weeks.
What to save: next grey date + next blue date + next red date + weekly food day + garden date if subscribed.
Summer Bank Holiday collection dates: 31 August 2026
Tuesday 1 September
Use the same waste stream shown for your property, but one day later.
Wednesday 2 September
Have the correct container ready by 7am.
Thursday 3 September
Do not put out every recycling container—follow the stream actually due.
Friday 4 September
The holiday changes the day, not what belongs inside the bin.
Saturday 5 September
Friday’s normal round moves to Saturday.
Do not reuse this rule automatically at Christmas: holiday arrangements are period-specific, so recheck the live council page.

Common items people get wrong
Place accepted empty plastic bags loose in the blue-lidded mixed-recycling bin.
These are excluded from the blue bin. Use grey waste or a suitable retailer take-back scheme where available.
Food-stained cardboard should not contaminate the red-lidded paper/card bin.
Food and drink cartons belong in the blue-lidded mixed-recycling bin.
Use the red-lidded bin, ideally contained inside a paper envelope or cardboard box.
Do not put it in the subscribed green bin. Use the appropriate recycling-centre or disposal route.
If an item is unusual: search the exact item in the A–Z instead of deciding only from whether it looks like plastic, paper or metal.
Your bin is still full: exact Braintree reporting route
First decide: missed or rejected?
Check the property calendar first. The wrong bin on the right weekday is not a missed collection.
If presented late after the crew passed, it does not qualify as a normal missed collection.
Read the reason. Contamination or presentation problems must be corrected rather than reported as a simple miss.
The council only collects waste contained inside the grey bin with the lid shut.
Unauthorised side waste is not part of the standard collection.
What to click after 3pm
Sign in to My Account
If you do not already have an account, create one first.
Open the Waste Management Portal
The portal displays the collection calendar associated with your property.
Select the bin type that was missed
Click the relevant collection entry in the portal calendar.
Choose “Bin has not been emptied”
This tells the portal which collection problem you are reporting.
Choose “Report a collection issue”
Submit the report before 12 noon on the next working day.
Leave the container at the normal collection point
Do not bring it back in immediately after reporting; the council says qualifying missed collections will be picked up as soon as possible.
Simple decision: no tag + correct bin + correct day + ready by 7am + still full after 3pm = use the missed-bin portal.
Use the right extra-capacity option before buying anything
Large household
You can apply for a larger or additional grey bin where household size creates a genuine ongoing need.
Medical condition
Significant additional non-hazardous household waste from a medical condition can be considered.
Nappies
Before relying on extra grey-bin space, check the separate free AHP collection introduced alongside the June 2026 service.
No automatic entitlement
Meeting one of the listed circumstances does not guarantee that extra capacity will be allocated.
Important: Braintree says larger or additional grey bins are provided without a charge when approved.
Free AHP service for nappies and continence waste
Children are eligible for the AHP service until age four, subject to the council’s rules.
The service can be provided for an initial period of up to three years.
The separate AHP collection is not currently available to communal properties because their general-waste model is different.
The approved household AHP service is free.
Best order: use weekly food + blue + red recycling fully → check AHP eligibility if relevant → apply for extra grey capacity if the household still has a genuine ongoing need.
Braintree garden waste: price and signup sequence
What to do after opening the garden-waste page
Select the My Account sign-in/register route
The garden-waste service is managed through the Waste Portal.
Confirm how many bins need collection
Each green bin requires its own annual subscription.
Confirm whether you already own a usable green bin
If you already have one, it can continue to be used. A new or replacement bin costs £37.25.
Review the subscription price before payment
The first 2026/27 subscription is £55; additional subscriptions are £30 each.
Complete payment
Online card subscriptions can auto-renew each year unless you opt out or cancel according to the service rules.
Wait for the permit
The council issues garden permits after the 14-day cooling-off period. Contact the council if the permit has not arrived within 21 days of payment.
Extra garden waste beside the bin is not collected. If you regularly produce more than one bin can hold, the official route is an additional bin plus a separate subscription.
Before reporting a missed green bin: active subscription + correct date + valid permit + accepted garden waste + bin presented correctly.
Sofa, appliance or large item? Check price before booking
Before you open the booking system
Some oversized items count as two booking items, including certain corner sofas and American-style fridge freezers.
Do this before paying; not every large household item belongs in the bulky service.
The council says released appointments are full. Slots are made available on a rolling basis up to 90 days ahead, so check again later.
After you secure a booking
Save the confirmed collection date
Braintree makes bulky collections by area on weekdays.
Do not substitute items after booking
Confirmed bookings cannot simply be amended; changes can require cancellation and rebooking.
Put items at the property boundary
Use the normal household-waste collection point, visible and accessible from the road.
Have everything outside by 7am
Items can be presented from the day before but must be ready by 7am on the agreed collection date.
No locked gates, steps or stairs: the route from the presented item to the public highway must allow the crew to collect it safely.
Booking checklist: exact item count + accepted-item check + available appointment + payment + accessible boundary by 7am.
Cannot move your bins to the boundary?
Permanent disability
A long-term mobility or physical difficulty can support the request.
Short-term injury
Temporary help may be available following an injury or operation.
Carer lives elsewhere
Reliance on a carer who does not live at the address can be relevant.
Crew returns containers
Approved containers are collected from and returned to the agreed location.
What to prepare before applying
Your name and property address
The council needs to identify the household collection service.
Your contact details
Provide a method the council can use while reviewing the request.
Why you need help
Describe the practical reason the containers cannot be taken to and returned from the normal collection point.
Where your bins are normally collected
This helps the council understand the current property arrangement.
After approval: Braintree says adding the address to the assisted-collection list can take up to 14 working days.
Use this route for a recurring access problem. Do not repeatedly report the same presentation issue as a missed bin.
Communal properties do not use the standard house frequency
Normally fortnightly
The district-wide standard communal model uses a more frequent general-waste service.
Alternate fortnightly
Mixed recycling alternates with the separate dry/paper recycling stream.
Alternate fortnightly
Follow the labels provided in your specific communal bin store.
Weekly
Communal food recycling may use 23-litre caddies or larger shared containers.
AHP difference: the separate household AHP collection is not currently available to communal properties because the communal general-waste frequency and capacity are different.
What to do: follow the containers and collection arrangements assigned to your block. If the bin-store setup does not match the council information, ask the landlord/managing agent to confirm the property arrangement.
When the item should not go in a household bin
Braintree centre
Springwood Drive, Braintree, CM7 2YN.
Witham centre
Perry Road, Witham, CM8 3YZ.
Managed by Essex
The recycling centres are managed by Essex County Council rather than Braintree District Council.
Identify the exact waste material
Do not simply choose the nearest site before checking what you are taking.
Check whether the selected centre accepts it
Use the current Love Essex site information for material restrictions.
Book a slot where required
The Essex booking system manages vehicle visits and available times.
Recheck before travelling
Opening hours, booking availability and site rules can change.
Trip checklist: exact item + accepted site + booking + current opening information.
Which Braintree website should you open?
Correct workflow: identify your problem here → open only the matching official service → follow that service’s exact live result.
