Household rubbish is now normally fortnightly. Glass/cans/tins/plastics remain fortnightly, and paper/card is now fortnightly for the majority of former Allerdale properties.

Allerdale Bin Schedule Changes You Need to Know in 2026
The current schedule is the result of Cumberland’s 2025 waste-service harmonisation.
Rubbish changed from weekly to fortnightly
Former-Allerdale household rubbish is now normally collected once every two weeks.
The change began from the week commencing 26 May 2025.
Glass, cans, tins and plastics
The frequency remained every two weeks.
Paper and cardboard
Paper/card increased from the previous monthly/four-weekly pattern to fortnightly for the majority of properties from late September 2025.
Rural service expansion
Cumberland also expanded kerbside recycling to more rural households. Some properties received kerbside recycling for the first time or gained access to a broader material range.
Cumberland’s own website currently contains legacy wording.
The area-specific material page still says Allerdale paper/card is collected every four weeks, while the newer service-change page says every two weeks for the majority of households.

Allerdale Bin Collection Time: Ready Before 6:30am
Former Allerdale households should have waste and recycling ready before 6:30am.
That is earlier than Cumberland’s general 7am rule for other service areas.
Before collection
- Check the exact collection date.
- Present the correct waste/recycling stream.
- Put the container at the recognised kerbside collection point.
- Make sure it can be clearly seen.
- Close the lid fully.
- Do not overload the container.
- Do not normally place excess rubbish beside it.
- Keep parked vehicles and other obstructions away from the collection route.
The one-third rule
Cumberland’s current service guidance asks residents to put a bin/container out only when it is at least one-third full.
After collection
Bring bins and containers back from the kerbside as soon as possible to reduce the risk of theft or a neighbour taking the wrong bin.

Cumberland advises residents to consider using an HWRC or local recycling site during gale-force winds rather than presenting light recycling that could be blown around.

Allerdale General Waste: Fortnightly Rubbish Bin
The residual bin is for household material that cannot go into either recycling stream, the garden collection or another specialist disposal route.

Does Allerdale Have Weekly Food Waste Collections?
No separate weekly household food-waste service is operating yet.
Household food waste in Cumberland is currently collected within residual waste where it is not home composted.
Why is there no food caddy yet?
Cumberland’s residual household waste is managed under a long-term treatment contract. Transitional arrangements allow the separate weekly domestic food-waste requirement to be deferred.
Cumberland currently states that weekly separate domestic food-waste collections will be introduced by 3 June 2034.
What should former-Allerdale residents do now?
- Home compost suitable peelings and plant-based food where practical.
- Keep garden waste out of the general rubbish bin.
- Use the current residual stream for food waste that is not composted.
- Do not copy a neighbouring council’s weekly food-caddy routine.
Allerdale Extra Waste and Side Bags
Normal service rule
Do not normally leave extra rubbish beside the bin.
Cumberland’s service guidelines say residents should not overload containers or put excess waste beside them.
Current safer-working exception
Cumberland’s current service-change page still contains a temporary safer-working instruction stating that a reasonable amount of extra bags can be collected while specific route-safety measures are in place.
Because the council describes this as temporary, do not treat it as a permanent right to side waste. Check the live service-status page before relying on it.
After a reported missed bin
A separate exception can apply where Cumberland cannot return after a reported missed collection. That allowance is explained in the missed-bin section below.

Allerdale Missed Bin: Report Within Two Working Days
A missed collection must be reported within two working days.
Before you report
- Check that the collection was actually due.
- Confirm the container was ready before 6:30am.
- Check that neighbours were collected.
- Confirm your bin was clearly visible at the kerbside.
- Check that the correct items were inside.
- Look for a crew sticker explaining why it was left.
- Make sure the lid was fully closed.
Will Cumberland return for one missed bin?
Normally no. Cumberland says it does not return for an isolated one-off missed container.
When can the crew return?
If a street, a large group of properties or an area affected by access problems was missed, a vehicle can return as soon as practically possible.
If a return is not possible
Where you reported the missed collection, Cumberland may accept additional material with the next scheduled collection.

Up to four additional bags can be accepted at the next collection.

Use up to two cardboard boxes: plastics/cans/glass in one; paper/cardboard in the other.

Allerdale Garden Waste 2026: March to November
One garden-waste bin is normally collected every two weeks from March to November.
The current charge for emptying each additional garden-waste bin is £42 per year.
£40 or £42 — why do search results disagree?
An early Cumberland news release dated February 2026 still quoted £40.
The current garden-waste service page and the official 2026/27 fees schedule effective from 1 April 2026 both use £42. Use £42 as the current charge unless the live payment service shows another updated amount.
How many garden bins can be collected?
The current maximum is four garden bins in total: one standard garden bin plus up to three additional subscribed bins.
Buying another physical garden bin
Cumberland’s 2026/27 fee schedule lists an additional 240L garden bin at £37.
That physical-container charge is separate from the £42 yearly charge to empty more than one garden bin.

Cumberland normally does not return for an isolated missed garden bin. A street-wide/access failure may receive a return, but excess garden waste is not accepted at the next collection.

Cumberland’s current larger-bin page describes 180L as the standard household capacity, but some former-Allerdale homes may still physically have an inherited 120L, 140L or 240L container.

Who Can Get a Larger Bin in Former Allerdale?
Cumberland currently treats 180L as its standard household residual capacity for larger-bin assessments.
Qualifying for a 240L bin
- Five or more people permanently living at the property.
- Four or more people including one child aged 0–3 using full-time disposable nappies.
- Three or more people including two or more children aged 0–3 using full-time disposable nappies.
- A permanent resident with a diagnosed condition producing additional medical waste; medical evidence is required.
Qualifying for more than 240L
- Six or more permanent residents.
- Five or more residents including one child aged 0–3 using disposable nappies.
- Four or more residents including two or more children aged 0–3 using disposable nappies.
- A diagnosed health condition producing significantly more medical waste.
Proof is required for the people permanently living in the household. Medical applications require appropriate medical evidence.

Check the container size first. Cumberland says some properties already have 240L bins inherited from previous district arrangements.

Allerdale Assisted Bin Collection
Assisted collection is available where illness, disability, infirmity or age-related frailty makes it unsafe or impossible to move waste containers.
What the service does
- Agrees an alternative collection point.
- Possible locations include the front door, back door or outside a garage.
- Crew retrieves the container from that agreed point.
Eligibility
Applications are approved only where there is no other able-bodied person aged over 16 living at the property who can manage the bins.

Three permit types
Annual recycling permit
Covers qualifying recyclable materials such as paper, glass, card, cans, plastics and green waste. Valid for a year with unlimited qualifying recycling visits.
General-waste permit
Valid for one month and allows one household visit for the waste described on the permit.
Pedestrian permit
Required if you need to enter an HWRC on foot carrying household recycling or rubbish.

Clinical waste and sharps
Local HWRC pages state that clinical waste is not accepted. Medicines and sharps need the appropriate healthcare/pharmacy/specialist route.
