West Dunbartonshire Bin Collection: Check Your Date, Day & Correct Bin Type
West Dunbartonshire Council uses an address-based collection calendar. Enter your postcode, select the exact property and use the dates shown for blue recycling, brown food/garden waste and green or black non-recyclable waste.
The main household schedule changed from November 2025. Residents still receive a collection each week, but the council now operates a three-week rolling pattern with two recycling collections and one general-waste collection across that period.
West Dunbartonshire Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Use West Dunbartonshire Council’s postcode-based bin calendar for your exact property. The current service keeps a weekly household collection, but the main three-week cycle contains two recycling weeks and one general-waste week.
Put the correct bin at the kerbside before 6:30am. Current address calendars show blue recycling, grey/green non-recyclable waste and brown-bin dates separately, so record the colour and date together rather than relying only on the weekday.

How to Check Your West Dunbartonshire Bin Collection Day
West Dunbartonshire’s bin day is property-specific. Clydebank, Dumbarton, Balloch and surrounding areas can share the same weekday while still following different routes and collection sequences.
-
Open the council’s bin collection calendar.
Use the live postcode search rather than an old PDF or calendar saved before the service change. -
Enter your postcode.
Select the exact property from the address results. -
Read each bin separately.
The calendar can list blue recycling, grey/green non-recyclable waste and brown-bin dates. -
Use “View Full Calendar”.
This is useful when you want to plan several weeks ahead. -
Recheck after a disruption.
Do not keep counting forward manually if the council publishes a service change or holiday adjustment.
How the New West Dunbartonshire 3-Week Bin Cycle Works
The collection system introduced from 10 November 2025 did not remove the weekly household visit. Instead, it changed which main waste stream is collected during each week.
Week 1
A recycling collection is scheduled. Check your address calendar to see whether your brown bin is also due.
Week 2
The three-week rolling cycle includes a second recycling collection before the next general-waste collection.
Week 3
The green or black non-recyclable household bin is collected once during the three-week cycle.
West Dunbartonshire also requires the council-issued sticker to be attached to the household general-waste bin. The sticker should be fixed to the back of the green or black bin underneath the handles.
West Dunbartonshire Bin Types and Colours
Blue recycling bin
Used for accepted dry household recycling including paper, cardboard, cartons, cans and suitable plastic bottles and tubs.
Grey or green bin
The general-waste container can be grey or green depending on the household. It is for non-recyclable rubbish.
Brown bin
Used for food waste throughout the year. Garden waste can also use the brown bin during the seasonal permit service.
What Goes in the Blue Recycling Bin?
The council accepts a broad range of clean household packaging and paper in the blue bin. Rinse containers where necessary so food and drink residue does not contaminate other recycling.
Accepted examples
- Newspapers and magazines
- Office paper and envelopes
- Cardboard packaging
- Food and drink cartons
- Plastic bottles
- Yoghurt pots and suitable tubs
- Aluminium cans and clean foil
- Steel food tins
Keep these out
- Glass
- Food waste
- Plastic carrier bags
- Plastic film
- Polystyrene
- Paint tins
- Food-contaminated cardboard
- Paper towels and tissues
Green or Black General-Waste Bin
Use the green or black household bin only for material that cannot be recycled through the blue or brown collection streams.
Typical residual waste
- Disposable nappies
- Non-reusable plastic bags
- Plastic toys
- Black plastic food trays
- Crisp packets and similar wrappers
- Paper tissues and towels
- Some non-recyclable packaging
No side waste
Excess household rubbish left next to the green or black bin will not be collected. Use a household recycling centre or another appropriate council service instead.
Brown Bin: Food Waste All Year
The brown bin remains the household food-waste container. A garden-waste permit is not required when the bin contains food waste only.
Meat & fish
Cooked or uncooked meat, fish and bones can go into the food-waste stream.
Fruit & vegetables
Fruit, vegetable peelings and other suitable kitchen food waste can be included.
Everyday leftovers
Bread, pasta, rice, dairy products, tea bags and coffee grounds are accepted.
Use the compostable food bags supplied for the scheme. Do not put ordinary plastic bags, liquids or oils into the brown bin.
West Dunbartonshire Garden Waste 2026: £60 Permit
Garden-waste collection is an optional paid service. For 2026, collections run from 30 March to 29 November and cost £60 for each brown bin used for garden waste.
£60 per bin
Each brown bin used for garden material needs its own valid permit.
Fortnightly
Garden-waste uplifts operate every two weeks during the service period.
Food stays free
A permit is not needed when the brown bin is being used for food waste only.
Garden material accepted
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge trimmings
- Leaves
- Twigs and small branches
- Flowers, plants and weeds
Permits can take up to 21 days to arrive after ordering. There are currently no exemptions from the garden-waste permit charge.
West Dunbartonshire Collection-Day Rules
Before 6:30am
Put the correct bin at the kerbside before 6:30am on the scheduled collection day.
Correct date
Use the live calendar because the new rolling schedule means the same weekday does not always mean the same bin.
Return the bin
Once emptied, move the container back to its designated storage area.
West Dunbartonshire Bin Not Emptied: What to Check
Before reporting a missed collection, confirm that the bin was due, correctly presented and not contaminated.
-
Check the property calendar.
Make sure the colour left outside was genuinely scheduled. -
Check the presentation time.
The bin should have been at the kerbside before 6:30am. -
Check the contents.
Incorrect material can result in the bin being labelled contaminated and left unemptied. -
Remove contamination if tagged.
Correct the contents and present the bin again on its next scheduled date. -
Report a genuine miss.
West Dunbartonshire currently directs residents to its website chatbot for ordinary missed-bin reports.
Contaminated Bin or Wrong Material?
A contaminated container is not treated as a normal missed collection. If crews identify material that should not be in the recycling or brown-bin stream, remove those items and wait for the next scheduled collection.
New, Replacement or Extra Bins
Recycling containers are currently supplied free of charge through the council’s ordering service. Grey or green household general-waste bins can carry a charge.
General-waste bin
The council currently states that a household grey/green bin may cost £95.30 and must be ordered through the relevant council contact route.
Extra general-waste capacity
Extra or larger household bins are restricted to qualifying circumstances such as a household of six or more people, medical waste needs or several children in nappies. Evidence can be required.
West Dunbartonshire Bulky Waste: £42 for Up to 5 Items
Sofas, beds, fridges, bicycles and other large household items need a separate disposal route. The council’s current special uplift costs £42 in advance for up to five listed items.
£42 charge
The standard booked household uplift is paid in advance.
Maximum 5 items
The council currently restricts each ordinary special uplift to no more than five listed items.
Target: 10 working days
The council says it aims to collect within ten working days after payment, although this is a guide rather than a guaranteed deadline.
Larger loads such as dismantled garden sheds or bundled garden waste require inspection and currently carry a minimum charge of £111.20.

West Dunbartonshire Bin Collection FAQs
How do I check my West Dunbartonshire bin collection date?
Use West Dunbartonshire Council’s bin collection calendar, enter your postcode and select the exact property. The result shows the upcoming dates for each waste stream assigned to the address.
What time should West Dunbartonshire bins be put out?
Put the correct bin at the kerbside before 6:30am on collection day.
How often is general waste collected in West Dunbartonshire?
Under the current rolling schedule, general household waste is collected once in each three-week cycle, while residents still receive a household collection every week because recycling is prioritised in the other two weeks.
What goes in the West Dunbartonshire blue bin?
Accepted items include paper, cardboard, cartons, plastic bottles and suitable tubs, aluminium cans and foil, and steel food tins. Glass, food waste, plastic carrier bags, plastic film and polystyrene should not go into the blue bin.
Is a permit needed for food waste in the brown bin?
No. The £60 permit applies to garden-waste collection. Food waste can continue to be placed in the brown bin without a garden permit.

The 2026 garden-waste permit costs £60 for each brown bin used for garden material. The seasonal collection period runs from 30 March to 29 November 2026.
Why was my West Dunbartonshire bin not emptied?
Common reasons include presenting it after 6:30am, putting out the wrong bin for that date or contamination. Check the official property calendar and bin contents before reporting a genuine missed collection.
How much does a West Dunbartonshire bulky uplift cost?
The current standard charge is £42 in advance for up to five listed household items. Some larger waste types require inspection and have a higher minimum charge.
Best Next Step: Use the Current Property Calendar
West Dunbartonshire’s collection system is now based around a three-week rolling pattern, so an old “alternate bins every fortnight” assumption can produce the wrong answer.
Search your postcode, select the exact property and check the colour shown for the next date. Put that container at the kerbside before 6:30am.
