Rugby Bin Collection Calendar: Dates, Days & Bin Colours

Rugby Borough Council does not use one collection date for every property. Enter your postcode in the council’s official checker, select your exact address and it will show the next black refuse, blue-lid recycling, weekly food-waste and subscribed green garden-waste collections for that property.

In the normal household service, black rubbish and blue-lid recycling are collected on alternate fortnights. Weekly food-waste collections started on 6 July 2026, while existing black, blue-lid and green-bin collection days remained unchanged.

Rugby Bin Collection: Quick Answer

Check your exact collection date using Rugby Borough Council’s postcode and address lookup. For most homes, the black rubbish bin and blue-lid recycling bin operate on alternating fortnightly collections. Food waste is now collected every week, and subscribed green garden-waste bins are normally collected every fortnight.

Have ordinary kerbside bins at the collection point by 6am, with the handle facing the street. Food-waste collections can fall on a different day from your black or recycling bin, so do not assume all containers go out together.

How to Check Your Rugby Bin Collection Date

Exact dates depend on the property, so an address lookup is more reliable than a generic calendar copied from another road. The council’s checker covers black refuse, blue-lid recycling, food caddies and green garden waste where the household has an active subscription.

  1. Open Rugby Borough Council’s bin-day checker.
Use the council service rather than an old screenshot or a neighbour’s timetable.
  2. Enter the property’s postcode.
Use the postcode for the home whose waste collections you need to check.
  3. Select the exact address.
Do not stop at the postcode because different properties can follow different rounds.
  4. Read the date beside each waste stream.
Note the actual date and container, particularly because the weekly food caddy can be collected on a different weekday.
  5. Recheck around Christmas and New Year.
This is the period when Rugby normally alters its ordinary collection cycle.
Useful habit: save the official checker on your phone and recheck the actual dates rather than trying to remember only “black week” or “recycling week”.

Rugby Bin Collection Calendar 2026: What Repeats Each Week?

Rugby’s normal household pattern is straightforward once the exact weekday for the property is known. The black refuse bin and blue-lid recycling bin are collected on alternate weeks. Food waste runs every week. Garden waste is a separate paid service and normally operates fortnightly.

Black-bin week

Put out the black refuse bin on the collection date displayed for your address.

Your weekly food caddy still follows its own scheduled day.

Blue-lid week

Put out the blue-lid recycling bin on the recycling date shown for your property.

Your food caddy continues weekly regardless of whether it is black-bin or recycling week.

Normal Rugby household collection frequencies in 2026
Container Main use Normal frequency Important note
Black bin Residual household rubbish Every two weeks Alternates with blue-lid recycling for most homes.
Blue-lid bin Household recycling Every two weeks Use the current recycling directory for unusual items.
Food caddy Separate food waste Weekly Can be collected on a different weekday from other bins.
Green bin Subscribed garden waste Every two weeks Requires an active annual garden-waste subscription and valid sticker.
No July 2026 reshuffle: Rugby had planned to reorganise existing collection days when food waste launched, but that change was paused. Existing blue-lid, black and green-bin collection days remained in place while the new food-waste service started separately.

Rugby Bin Colours: Which Container Should You Use?

Black bin

General rubbish

Use the black bin for ordinary non-recyclable household waste after separating recycling and food waste.

Blue-lid bin

Recycling

Rugby’s blue-lid bin is the main household recycling container for accepted paper, card, glass, metal, cartons and recyclable plastics.

Food caddy

Food waste

Use the separate food-waste caddy for household food scraps. The outdoor caddy or communal food container is collected weekly.

Green bin

Garden waste

This is an opt-in paid collection for eligible garden material. A valid subscription sticker is required.

2026 food-waste change: do not rely on old guidance telling you to place food in the black or garden-waste bin. Rugby’s dedicated food-waste service is now operating and food should use the current food-caddy system.

Weekly Food Waste Collections Started on 6 July 2026

Rugby Borough Council introduced its separate weekly household food-waste service from Monday 6 July 2026. This was the major collection change for residents in 2026 even though the planned wider reorganisation of existing bin days was paused.

Inside the home

Households received a compact 7-litre indoor caddy for collecting food scraps in the kitchen.

Houses

Houses use a larger 23-litre outdoor food caddy with a lockable lid for the weekly collection.

Flats

Flats and managed accommodation can use a larger shared 140-litre food-waste wheelie bin arrangement.

What can go in the food caddy?

Put in

  • Meat and fish scraps
  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Bones and eggshells
  • Bread, rice, pasta and leftovers
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Suitable dairy and other food leftovers

Keep out

  • Garden waste
  • Glass
  • Food packaging
  • Compostable cups and packaging
  • Cooking oil, fat and grease
  • Non-food items

Rugby’s current food-waste guidance allows residents to line the food caddy with a plastic bag. The council specifically advises against biodegradable liners because they can break down inside the caddy before processing.

What Goes in Rugby’s Blue-Lid Recycling Bin?

Use the council’s item-by-item recycling directory when you are unsure. Current Rugby guidance includes common household materials such as cardboard, rinsed glass bottles and jars, drinks cartons and many plastic containers in the blue-lid recycling stream.

Common recycling examples

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Food and drink cans
  • Drinks cartons
  • Accepted plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Plastic bags and films where accepted under current Rugby guidance, placed loose

Check before adding

  • Pyrex and plate glass
  • Electrical items
  • Food waste
  • Garden waste
  • Building rubble
  • Anything not listed in the council’s recycling directory
Recycling guidance can change. For an unusual package or material, search the council’s live directory instead of judging only by whether the item looks recyclable.

What Time Should Rugby Bins Be Put Out?

Put your scheduled wheelie bin at the back of the footpath outside your home, next to the highway, with the handle facing the street. It should be ready for collection by 6am.

By 6am

Have the correct container at the collection point by 6am on the scheduled day.

Normal rounds

Rugby says normal collections take place between approximately 6am and 3:30pm.

Extreme heat

During very hot weather the council can start collections at 5am and normally issues a notification through the Rugby app.

Late presentation: the council says it will not return simply because a household failed to place the bin out by the required time.

Rugby Bin Not Collected? Follow This Missed-Bin Check

Wait until the normal collection round has finished before treating the bin as missed. Rugby Borough Council says missed-bin reports should not be made until after 3:30pm on the scheduled collection day.

  1. Confirm the collection was actually due.
Check the official address result for the correct waste stream.
  2. Confirm the bin was out by 6am.
It should have been correctly positioned and accessible to the crew.
  3. Check for a rejection reason.
Overloading, contamination, frozen contents or another presentation problem can prevent emptying.
  4. Wait until after 3:30pm.
The normal round may simply not have reached your road yet.
  5. Report it within the permitted window.
The council says missed collections must be reported within two days of the due date, excluding weekends.
  6. Leave an accepted missed bin available.
Where the council missed it by mistake, it says it aims to return within three working days.
Example: if the bin was due on Thursday and genuinely missed, Rugby’s guidance says the report must be made by the following Monday because weekends are excluded from the two-day reporting calculation.

Rugby Garden Waste Collection 2026–27

The green-bin garden-waste service is optional and operates separately from ordinary refuse and recycling. For the 2026–27 subscription period, Rugby Borough Council charges £46 per bin for the year.

Frequency

Green garden-waste collections normally run every two weeks for subscribed properties.

Subscription

A valid sticker must be displayed on the subscribed green bin before it can be emptied.

Winter break

The published 2026–27 suspension covers at least 14 December 2026 through 15 January 2027 inclusive.

You can subscribe during the year, but the council does not offer a reduced part-year price. It advises allowing up to two weeks for the sticker to arrive and for the collection service to be arranged.

Food is now separate: current dedicated food-waste guidance says food should use the weekly food-caddy service rather than being added to the garden-waste stream.

Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year Bin Collections

Rugby’s normal rule is that household waste collections continue as usual on ordinary public and Bank Holidays. The collection cycle normally changes around Christmas and New Year.

Most Bank Holidays

Follow the normal address-specific collection date unless Rugby Borough Council publishes a service change.

Christmas

Recheck the postcode calendar because the normal alternating cycle can change over the festive period.

New Year

Do not reuse last year’s dates. Use the live 2026–27 schedule when the council publishes the festive arrangements.

Garden waste is different: its 2026–27 service already has a published seasonal suspension beginning 14 December 2026.

Rugby Flats and Communal Bin Collections

Rugby Borough Council says flats and communal properties can have different waste arrangements from standard kerbside houses. Do not copy the wheelie-bin pattern from a nearby house when the property uses shared bins or managed accommodation.

Communal waste

Use the containers and collection point assigned to the building. Access arrangements can also affect whether crews can empty shared bins.

Communal food waste

Rugby’s food-waste service provides a 140-litre shared wheelie-bin option for flats and managed accommodation rather than the 23-litre house caddy.

Use the exact address checker first. If the displayed service does not match the actual communal setup, contact the council or the property manager rather than assuming the house-based calendar applies.

Broken Bin, Replacement Bin or Help Moving Your Bin

Replacement or additional bin

Rugby Borough Council has an online route for reporting a damaged bin or requesting a replacement, smaller bin or—where the household qualifies—additional capacity.

The standard household provision includes one black refuse bin and up to two blue-lid recycling bins. Additional black-bin capacity is restricted and can require evidence in qualifying medical circumstances.

Request or repair a bin

Assisted collection

Residents who cannot move their wheelie bins because of disability or vulnerability, and who do not have appropriate household help, can check Rugby’s assisted collection service.

Start from the council’s household waste service hub to reach the current assisted-bin application route.

What If the Item Does Not Fit in Your Normal Bin?

Do not leave furniture, mattresses, electricals or extra rubbish beside the household bin and assume the collection crew will take it. Rugby operates separate routes for bulky items, while larger quantities of suitable household waste can use Warwickshire’s recycling-centre system.

Bulky household items

Rugby Borough Council provides a paid bulky-waste collection service for suitable household items that cannot be placed in the normal black, green or blue-lid bins.

Check current bulky-waste service

Household recycling centre

For suitable household waste you can check Warwickshire County Council’s current recycling-centre rules, booking requirements and accepted materials before travelling.

Rugby Bin Collection FAQs

How do I check my Rugby bin collection day?

Use Rugby Borough Council’s official postcode checker. Enter your postcode, choose the exact address and read the upcoming dates for black refuse, blue-lid recycling, food waste and subscribed garden waste.

Which bin is collected this week in Rugby?

For most households, black rubbish and blue-lid recycling alternate every two weeks, but you should check your own address rather than guessing the current week. Food waste is collected weekly.

What time do Rugby bins need to be out?

Ordinary kerbside bins should be at the required collection point by 6am on the scheduled day, with the handle facing the street. During extreme heat Rugby can start collections earlier and may issue a council-app notification.

What colour is the recycling bin in Rugby?

Household recycling normally goes in the blue-lid recycling bin. Use Rugby Borough Council’s recycling directory for materials you are unsure about.

How often is food waste collected in Rugby?

The separate food-waste service is weekly. Rugby launched the service on 6 July 2026, and the food collection day can differ from the property’s black or blue-lid bin day.

When can I report a missed Rugby bin?

Wait until after 3:30pm on the scheduled collection day. Rugby says a missed collection must then be reported within two days of the due date, excluding weekends.

How much is Rugby garden waste collection in 2026?

The published 2026–27 subscription costs £46 per green garden-waste bin for the year. There is no part-year discount, and only subscribed bins displaying the appropriate sticker are emptied.

Do Rugby bin collections change on Bank Holidays?

Rugby normally continues collections on ordinary public and Bank Holidays. The main recurring timetable change is around Christmas and New Year, so recheck the official collection calendar during the festive period.

Best Way to Use the Rugby Bin Calendar

Start with the exact property rather than trying to work out a borough-wide “black or blue week”. Rugby’s address checker gives the dates that matter for your home.

Then remember the basic 2026 pattern: black and blue-lid bins alternate fortnightly, food waste is weekly, and subscribed green garden waste is normally fortnightly.
