Preston Bin Collection Calendar: Dates, Days & Bin Colours
To find your Preston bin collection date, use Preston City Council’s address search and select your exact property. Most homes use alternate-week main-bin collections, but the collection rounds changed in April 2026, so an old calendar or a neighbour’s routine should not be treated as your current schedule.
The main household system now includes grey general waste, red-lidded paper and card recycling, yellow-lidded container recycling, a weekly silver food-waste caddy and an optional paid brown garden-waste service.
Preston Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Check the exact property before putting a bin out. Preston City Council’s collection-day service shows the dates for your household over the year. Search using the first line of the address and/or postcode, select the correct property and read the collection date shown there.
For most properties, the main waste and recycling bins operate on an alternate-week pattern. From 20 April 2026, Preston also introduced a weekly food-waste collection. Bins and the outdoor food caddy should be ready by 7am on the correct collection day.

How to Check Your Preston Bin Collection Day
Preston does not publish one date that applies to every household. The useful answer is the date attached to your property in the council’s live lookup. This matters particularly in 2026 because collection rounds were reorganised from 20 April.
-
Open Preston City Council’s bin collection dates page.
Use the council service rather than relying on a saved neighbourhood timetable. -
Search the first line of your address and/or postcode.
Select the exact property from the results. -
Read the date and collection stream together.
Do not record only a weekday. Save which bin or caddy is due as well. -
Recheck after any service change.
A previously printed or saved calendar can become stale when a collection round changes.
Important Preston Bin Collection Change in 2026
Preston City Council changed waste and recycling collection rounds from Monday 20 April 2026. The council linked the route changes to substantial housing growth across Preston and introduced them alongside the new weekly food-waste service.
Collection days changed
Some residents received different collection days, so an older calendar should be replaced with the current address result.
Food waste is weekly
Kerbside households now use the outdoor silver food caddy every week on the same day as their normal waste or recycling collection.
Cartons joined yellow-lid recycling
Preston’s 2026 update added cartons such as rinsed milk, juice and soup cartons to the yellow-lidded recycling stream.
How Often Are Preston Bins Collected?
Preston City Council states that most properties receive alternate-week collections for their main waste and recycling bins. That describes the normal pattern, but your exact dates still come from the address calendar.
| Container | Main use | Normal frequency | Best action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey bin | General household waste | Part of the alternate-week main-bin system for most properties | Check exact address date |
| Red-lidded bin | Paper and card | Part of the main recycling cycle | Check exact address date |
| Yellow-lidded bin | Plastic, cans, glass and accepted cartons | Part of the main recycling cycle | Check exact address date |
| Silver outdoor caddy | Food waste | Weekly | Put beside bins by 7am |
| Brown bin | Subscribed garden waste | Fortnightly | Valid permit required |
Preston Bin Colours: What Goes in Each Bin?
Preston’s current household system separates paper and card from container recycling. The easiest way to avoid contamination is to identify the lid colour before deciding where an item goes.
General waste
Use for ordinary non-recyclable household rubbish that cannot go into the council’s recycling or food-waste services.
Paper & card
Paper, cards, envelopes, cereal boxes, cardboard packaging, tubes and suitable flattened cardboard.
Containers
Accepted plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, cans, tins, glass bottles and jars, foil, aerosols and accepted cartons.
Food waste
Use the outdoor food caddy for accepted cooked and uncooked household food waste.
Garden waste
Garden material only under the paid subscription service. Food waste no longer belongs in this bin.
Red-lidded bin examples
- Paper and envelopes
- Greeting cards
- Cereal boxes
- Cardboard packaging
- Cardboard tubes
- Empty pizza boxes where suitable
Yellow-lidded bin examples
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic pots, tubs and trays

- Glass bottles and jars
- Clean foil and empty aerosols

Preston Food Waste Collection: Weekly Silver Caddy
Preston’s weekly household food-waste service began on 20 April 2026 for kerbside households. Residents received a small indoor caddy, a larger 23-litre outdoor silver caddy and liners.
Collected every week
The outdoor caddy is emptied weekly on the same day as your normal general-waste or recycling collection.
Put it out by 7am
Place the outdoor caddy with the rest of your containers by 7am and leave the handle upright so the lid is locked.
Back-alley exception
If your normal bins are collected from a back alley, the food caddy still needs to be presented at the front edge of the property nearest the highway.
What can go in the silver food caddy?
Accepted examples
- Fruit and vegetable peelings
- Leftovers and plate scrapings
- Bread and baked goods
- Rice, beans and pasta
- Egg shells
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Raw and cooked meat or fish
- Small bones and pet food
Keep these out
- Liquids such as milk or juice
- Oil or liquid fat
- Food packaging
- Cutlery
- Wipes and kitchen roll
- General household rubbish
- Compostable packaging
What Time Should Preston Bins Be Put Out?
Bins should be at the edge of the property or the agreed collection point by 7am. Collection vehicles may arrive at different times from week to week, so seeing a lorry at the same time previously is not a reliable deadline.
After 6pm
Preston’s collection guidance says bins should be put out no earlier than 6pm on the day before collection.
By 7am
Have the correct scheduled bin or container at the required collection point before the route begins.
Bring it back in
Return emptied bins to the property as soon as reasonably possible rather than leaving them permanently on the street.
Preston Missed Bin: When and How to Report It
First check the updated address calendar because collection schedules changed during 2026. If the correct bin was genuinely due and remains unemptied, wait until after 4pm on collection day before submitting a missed-bin report.
Preston City Council says missed bins must normally be reported within 48 hours. If the council genuinely missed the collection, it aims to return within two working days, although the council currently says that timescale cannot be guaranteed.
-
Confirm the date.
Reopen the property calendar and make sure the container was actually scheduled. -
Check the 7am rule.
A bin that was presented late will normally wait until its next scheduled collection. -
Check its position.
It should be at the kerbside or agreed collection point. Some shared drives and private roads use a designated collection point. -
Look for a sticker.
A heavy-bin or “oops” sticker normally means the crew identified a problem that must be corrected. -
Wait until after 4pm.
Do not submit the normal missed-bin report too early in the collection day. -
Report within 48 hours.
Late reports can mean waiting until the next scheduled collection.
Why might Preston leave a bin unemptied?
Preston Pink Bag Collections
Pink bags are used for selected residential properties that do not have enough space for wheeled bins. They are not a service that any household can simply choose; Preston City Council decides which properties use the system.
When to put them out
Pink bags can be left out from 6pm on the evening before collection and must be ready by 7am.
How many?
Existing pink-bag properties can normally present two to three pink bags per week.
Need more bags?
Existing customers can request another supply. Preston says delivery is free and normally takes around seven working days.
Preston Brown Bin Garden Waste Collection 2026/27
The brown bin is a paid garden-waste service. For the 2026/27 collection year, the subscription costs £40 for one brown bin and covers fortnightly collections from 6 April 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to the Christmas and New Year break.
One subscribed bin
The full annual charge applies even when a household subscribes part way through the service year.
Fortnightly collection
For most Preston properties, garden waste is collected on the normal general-waste collection day.
Sticker must be visible
The council sends a property-specific permit. Crews will not empty a subscribed brown bin without a valid permit displayed.

Preston Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collections
Preston City Council says collections operate on normal bank holidays except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Festive replacement dates are published closer to the Christmas and New Year period.
Most bank holidays
Use the normal property calendar unless the council publishes a specific change.
Christmas Day
The normal collection service does not operate. Check the council’s published festive replacement date.
Boxing Day & New Year
These are also listed as exceptions, so use the current festive guidance rather than guessing a substitute day.
Preston Household Waste Recycling Centre
For suitable household waste that cannot go into normal kerbside bins, Lancashire County Council operates the Preston Recycling Centre at Tom Benson Way, Preston, Lancashire, PR2 1SG.
7 days a week
The current published opening time is 9am to 5pm.
Three festive days
The centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Appointment required
Lancashire requires an appointment for vans and trailers, including single-axle trailers.

Check Your Preston Address Before Moving the Bin
The safest Preston bin routine is simple: open the council collection calendar, select your exact property, check both the date and container, then have it at the correct collection point by 7am.
The April 2026 round changes and weekly food-waste rollout make old calendars particularly risky. Recheck the live council information before reporting a missed collection or relying on a remembered fortnightly pattern.
