Letchworth Bin Collection: Day, Schedule, Missed Bins & Bank Holidays
Letchworth Garden City household collections are managed by North Herts Council. The exact collection date depends on your address, so use the council’s live property checker rather than relying on a town-wide weekday.
Since August 2025, standard houses use an alternating three-weekly cycle for mixed recycling, cardboard and paper, and non-recyclable waste. Food waste stays weekly, while subscribed garden waste remains fortnightly.
Letchworth Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Use North Herts Council’s live “Find your bin collection day” service. Enter your address and use the dates shown for that property. Standard mixed recycling, cardboard and paper, and non-recyclable waste are on an alternating three-weekly cycle. Food waste is collected every week.
Put the correct container at the front boundary of the property by 6:30am, keep lids closed and make sure recyclable materials are in the correct bin.

How to Check Your Letchworth Bin Collection Day
North Herts collection dates are property-specific. A Letchworth postcode covers many properties, so always select your actual address rather than assuming every nearby street uses the same collection day.
-
Open North Herts Council’s collection checker.
Use the official address-based service for Letchworth Garden City. -
Enter or select your property.
Make sure the result relates to your actual household. -
Check which container is due.
Mixed recycling, cardboard and paper, and non-recyclable waste rotate through the three-weekly system. -
Check food and garden waste separately.
Food waste remains weekly and subscribed garden waste follows its own fortnightly cycle. -
Recheck around a bank holiday.
North Herts publishes temporary revised dates when a holiday changes the normal round.
How the Letchworth Three-Weekly Bin Schedule Works
The main household waste streams now rotate rather than being collected every fortnight. This means each of the three principal wheelie bins is normally emptied once every three weeks.
| Container | Waste stream | Normal frequency | Important rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black-lidded bin | Mixed dry recycling | Every 3 weeks | Place recyclable items loose, not inside bags. |
| Blue-lidded bin | Paper and cardboard | Every 3 weeks | Keep plastics and food contamination out. |
| Purple-lidded bin | Non-recyclable household waste | Every 3 weeks | Do not place recyclable material in this bin. |
| Brown food caddy | Food waste | Weekly | Present with the weekly collection. |
| Brown-lidded bin | Garden waste | Every 2 weeks | Paid subscription required. |
Letchworth Bin Colours and What Goes in Each
Mixed recycling
Use this bin for accepted mixed recycling such as suitable plastics, glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, cartons and plastic bags or wrapping accepted by North Herts.
Recycling should be placed loose. Do not bag up the contents inside the recycling bin.
Cardboard and paper
Use the blue-lidded bin for newspapers, magazines, cardboard packaging, corrugated card and accepted white or coloured paper.
Keep food waste, plastics and other mixed recycling out of this container.
Non-recyclable waste
This is for residual household rubbish that cannot be placed in the recycling or food-waste services.
Examples include nappies, tissues, pet waste and other genuinely non-recyclable household material.
Food waste
Use the weekly food service for leftovers, plate scrapings, vegetable peelings, bread, tea bags and similar household food waste.
Garden waste
Subscribed garden bins can take grass cuttings, leaves, weeds, flowers, small prunings, bark, twigs and other accepted garden material.
What if Your Letchworth Bin Is Full?
Extra mixed recycling
Additional mixed recycling can be presented in a reusable container such as a plastic storage box or an old recycling box. Do not use carrier bags beside the recycling bin.
Extra cardboard
Break cardboard down first. If the blue-lidded bin is full, larger flattened boxes can be placed next to it for collection.
Extra general waste
Extra non-recyclable waste placed beside the purple-lidded bin is not accepted. Use an appropriate recycling-centre route instead.
Weekly Food Waste Collection
Food waste remains the most frequent household collection in Letchworth. The outdoor brown caddy is emptied every week even though the main recycling and residual bins now operate on longer cycles.
Use the food caddy
Put household food waste such as leftovers, peelings, bread, tea bags and plate scrapings into the food-waste system rather than the purple non-recyclables bin.
Need a second outdoor caddy?
Households with six or more permanent full-time residents can apply for a second outdoor food-waste caddy through the council’s extra-capacity process.
Letchworth Missed Bin: Reporting Rules
North Herts requires a missed collection to be reported within two days of the missed collection. Before reporting, make sure the problem was genuinely the crew’s missed service rather than late presentation or contamination.
-
Check the collection date.
Confirm the correct container was due at your exact property. -
Check the 6:30am deadline.
The bin must have been at the front boundary before 6:30am. -
Look for a sticker.
A contamination or presentation sticker normally explains why the crew could not empty the bin. -
Report within two days.
Use the council’s official missed-bin service while the reporting window remains open. -
Leave the bin available.
North Herts says collection after a valid missed report can take up to 72 hours.
Letchworth Bank Holiday Bin Collections
Bank holidays can change the normal collection date, so the safest rule is to check your live address calendar or North Herts Council app for the affected week.
Early May 2026
Collections from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May moved one day later, finishing with Friday collections on Saturday 9 May.
Spring Bank Holiday
Collections from Monday 25 May to Friday 29 May also moved one day later, with Friday collections taking place on Saturday 30 May.
August Bank Holiday
Collections from Monday 31 August moved one day later through the week, with Friday 4 September collections moved to Saturday 5 September.
North Herts Garden Waste Subscription 2026/27
Letchworth’s brown-lidded garden bin is an optional paid service. The current subscription period runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
£57 annual subscription
The standard 2026/27 charge is £57 for one subscribed garden-waste bin.
£28.50 concession
Residents in the Council Tax Reduction Scheme can qualify for a reduced first-bin subscription of £28.50.
£40 new-bin charge
A separate £40 supply charge applies when a new or replacement brown bin needs to be delivered.
Garden waste is normally collected every two weeks. New subscriptions can take up to two weeks to register with collection crews, so subscribing immediately before a planned collection does not guarantee that first collection.
The garden bin should be at the property boundary by 6:30am. Food waste must not go into it because food is collected separately.
Letchworth Flats and Communal Bin Collections
Flats and communal-bin properties can follow a different service from standard houses. North Herts says that for most communal properties, collection frequency did not change when the new household three-weekly system started.
Communal mixed recycling
Shared recycling bins use the communal arrangement assigned to the property rather than the standard house calendar.
Communal food waste
Food-waste bins can also form part of the communal system, so residents should follow the labels and building-specific arrangement.
Assisted Bin Collection in Letchworth
Residents who cannot physically move their waste containers to the edge of the property can apply for an assisted collection where there is no other person in the household able to help.
Who may qualify?
The service is aimed at people who are elderly, disabled or otherwise physically unable to move or lift their containers to the normal collection point.
Temporary or ongoing
Assistance can be arranged for a temporary period or as an ongoing service depending on the resident’s circumstances.
Letchworth Bulky Waste Collection: 2026 Charges
North Herts provides a paid collection service for large household items such as beds, sofas, televisions and white goods.
1–3 items: £60.88
The current published charge is £60.88 for a collection of one to three eligible bulky items.
Additional item: £16.88
Each extra eligible item added to the same appropriate bulky-waste collection costs £16.88.

Upholstered items such as sofas cannot be collected together with some other bulky items, so mixed bookings may require two paid collections.
