Cherwell Bin Collection: Find Your Day, Right Bin & Missed-Collection Route
Cherwell households should check the exact property rather than rely on a district-wide weekday. Enter your postcode in Cherwell District Council’s collection search, select the correct address and check which container is due.
The normal household pattern is green rubbish one week and blue recycling the next, while food waste is collected weekly. A subscribed brown garden-waste bin normally goes out with the blue recycling bin.
Cherwell Bin Collection: Quick Answer
Use Cherwell District Council’s postcode-based collection search for your exact day. Standard households normally alternate between a green rubbish bin every two weeks and a blue recycling bin every two weeks. The silver outdoor food caddy is collected weekly. A subscribed brown garden bin is normally collected every other week alongside the blue bin.
If the online checker does not work, Cherwell also publishes separate 2026 North Cherwell and South Cherwell printable calendars. Residents of flats may have a different collection day from nearby houses and should not assume the neighbouring timetable applies.

How to Check Your Cherwell Bin Collection Day
Cherwell’s official finder works from the property address. This matters because collection information for a flat or individual address can differ from another property nearby.
-
Open Cherwell District Council’s Bin Collection Search.
Use the official postcode tool rather than trying to calculate the next date from another street. -
Enter the full postcode.
Check the postcode carefully before submitting it. -
Select the exact property.
Do not assume every address within one postcode has an identical service. -
Read the next green and blue dates.
Save both the bin colour and date, not only the weekday. -
Use the printable calendar as a fallback.
Cherwell publishes separate North and South Cherwell calendars for 2026.
Cherwell Household Bin Collection Schedule
Cherwell operates an alternate-week system for the main household wheelie bins. Green rubbish is collected one week and blue recycling the following week. Food waste is separate and collected every week.
| Service | Normal frequency | Container | Key rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| General rubbish | Every 2 weeks | Green wheelie bin | No normal green-bin side waste. |
| Mixed recycling | Every 2 weeks | Blue wheelie bin | Place recycling loose; do not use black bags. |
| Food waste | Every week | Silver outdoor caddy | Present with whichever main bin is due. |
| Garden waste | Every 2 weeks when subscribed | Brown wheelie bin | Normally collected with the blue bin. |
What Goes in Each Cherwell Bin?
Green rubbish bin
Use it for ordinary household waste that cannot use one of Cherwell’s recycling routes.
The council does not normally collect extra rubbish left beside or on top of this bin.
Blue recycling bin
Accepted recycling includes paper, cardboard, cans, tins, cartons, plastic bottles, tubs, pots and trays, clean foil and eligible glass bottles and jars.
Put recycling in loose rather than in carrier bags or black sacks.
Silver food caddy
Use it for cooked and raw food, leftovers, meat, fish, bones, dairy, fruit, vegetables, bread, rice, pasta, tea bags and coffee grounds.
The outdoor silver caddy is collected every week.
Brown garden bin
Use a valid subscribed brown bin for garden material such as grass cuttings, branches, leaves, flowers, hedge trimmings and weeds.
Food waste belongs in the silver caddy, not the brown garden bin.
Glass Bottles and Jars Can Now Go in the Blue Bin
Since 1 January 2026, Cherwell residents can recycle eligible glass bottles and jars through the blue kerbside recycling service. Rinse bottles and jars first; labels and lids can remain on them.
Accepted glass
- Glass bottles of any colour
- Jam jars
- Sauce jars
- Other eligible household glass jars
Do not treat all glass alike
- Drinking glasses
- Pyrex and heat-resistant cookware
- Mirrors
- Window glass
- Ceramics
Cherwell Bin Not Collected? Check This Before Reporting
Cherwell requires a missed collection to be reported within 3 days of the scheduled collection day. The online form does not accept a missed-bin report until after 5pm on collection day.
-
Confirm that the bin was due.
Recheck the property-specific collection date before submitting a report. -
Check the presentation time.
The normal rule is 7am, but follow any current temporary council notice requiring earlier presentation. -
Check where the bin was placed.
It should be clearly visible at the kerbside or designated collection point. -
Check the contents.
Contamination, excessive weight or incorrect waste can prevent collection. -
Look for a crew sticker.
A sticker can explain why a container was not emptied. -
Report after 5pm and within 3 days.
If accepted as a genuine miss, Cherwell says it will return within seven working days, Tuesday to Friday.
Cherwell Bin Collections on Bank Holidays
Do not automatically move your bin day because a bank holiday appears on the calendar. Cherwell’s current collection-search guidance specifically says that Good Friday collections take place as usual.
The council also warns that some collection dates may change around Christmas and New Year. Those arrangements should be checked on the live Cherwell website when published rather than predicted from the previous year.
Good Friday
Cherwell currently says Good Friday bin collections take place as usual.
Christmas & New Year
Dates can change. Recheck the official calendar and council updates shortly before the festive period.
Other disruption
Severe weather, operational issues or a temporary service notice can override the normal routine.
Cherwell Garden Waste Subscription 2026/27
Cherwell’s garden-waste service is optional and chargeable. For the subscription year from 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027, the published charge is £59 per subscription.
£59 annual subscription
Each subscribed brown bin requires its own valid subscription.
Fortnightly collection
The brown bin is normally collected every other week with the blue recycling bin.
Bin not included automatically
If you do not already have a brown bin, request one during the subscription process.
A paid subscription can be moved to another address within the Cherwell district, but the council must be told so the service record can be updated. The brown bin moves with the resident.
For properties where a garden bin is not suitable, Cherwell also publishes a garden-waste sack option: £56 for 40 sacks. This is a one-off sack purchase rather than the annual bin subscription.
Bin Collections for Flats in Cherwell
Flats can use communal bins, Cherwell sacks or another building-specific setup. The number and size of shared bins depends on the number of flats and available storage space.
Some flats may not show collection information in the postcode search and can be collected on different days from neighbouring houses. In that case, contact Cherwell Customer Services rather than copying the nearby household schedule.
No space for wheelie bins?
Some town-centre flats receive Cherwell sacks instead of standard bins.
New-build flat?
The landlord, managing agent or housing association should contact the council to arrange the required communal-bin setup.
Cherwell Bulky Waste: Sofas, Furniture and Large Items
Cherwell offers a paid bulky household-waste collection for items that will not fit in a normal bin. For charges applying from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the council publishes:
| Booking | Charge |
|---|---|
| One small item | £14.50 |
| One single medium/large item | £21.50 |
| Any three items | £35.50 |
Up to 12 items can be arranged for one household by making up to four three-item bookings for the same collection day. Standard collections take place on different days in the north and south of the district, and booked items must be outside the property by 6am.
