Type the full postcode
Use the postcode for the property where the bins are actually collected. Do not search only for “Prestwich”, “Radcliffe” or another town name.

The council service then returns addresses linked to that postcode.
Choose your exact house or flat
This is the point where many generic bin guides fail: dates belong to the property result, not the council area as a whole.
Record colour + date together
Write “green — 4 September” instead of writing only “4 September”. Grey, blue and green use three-week cycles while brown runs every two weeks.
Use the email alert option if remembering is difficult
The official service also provides email reminders and collection alerts.
If the online service does not work: check the postcode carefully first. The council page also has a route to report an online-service problem. For general council contact, use 0161 253 5000.
Best household note: “Tuesday — green paper/card — out Monday night — lid closed”. That is more useful than saving only a weekday.

Do not copy another council’s colours: in Bury the green bin is paper/card and the brown bin is food/garden.

Bottle-lid detail: current Bury guidance asks residents to remove plastic bottle lids where easy and put those lids in general waste because loose lids can interfere with the glass-sorting stream.
Simple test: rigid accepted container = check blue; thin flexible film/bag = keep out under the current Bury system.
Use the brown bin to protect your limited grey-bin space
Food can go in loose
You do not have to use a liner for every food item. Bury explicitly allows food waste loose in the brown bin.
Bury normally delivers one roll of 52 compostable food-waste liners each year, usually around December with the new collection calendar.
Make liners last
Put vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit and bread loose in the bin. Save liners for meat, fish, bones or messy leftovers.
Buying more?
Use compostable liners marked with the seedling logo. Ordinary plastic carrier bags are not suitable.
Keep out: packaging, plastic bags, liquids, cooking oil, large amounts of soil, large logs and plant pots.
Capacity fix: if your grey bin is full after 10–14 days, check how much food waste and recyclable packaging is still inside it.

If your street is listed, leave the bin available
The council already knows about wider access or operational problems, so a duplicate individual report is not normally required.
If only your household was missed, check eligibility
Was it out by 7am? Correct point? Lid closed? Correct contents? If yes, continue.
Choose the exact bin colour report
The Bury page gives separate grey, brown, blue and green report routes.
Submit before 1pm next day
Do not leave the individual report until later in the week.
Fast rule: before 5pm = wait; whole street = check live council list; only your eligible bin = report before 1pm next day.

Missed grey bin
Bury says it will post official bags for household rubbish until the next scheduled grey collection.
Missed blue bin
Official bags are posted for recycling until the next scheduled blue collection.
Missed green bin
Official bags are posted for paper/card until the next scheduled green collection.
Missed brown bin
The council says it will return within five working days for a qualifying missed brown collection.
Missed assisted collection
The council says it will return within three working days.
Expectation check: grey/blue/green = bags until next round; brown/assisted = return collection target.

Food still in grey?
Move suitable cooked and uncooked food into the brown bin, which is collected every two weeks.
Containers still in grey?
Move accepted bottles, pots, tubs, trays, glass and cans into blue.
Cardboard taking space?
Flatten clean paper/card and move it to the green recycling bin.
Recycling bins genuinely full?
Bury allows residents to request extra blue or green recycling capacity after items have been squashed and flattened.
Only after sorting: if the household still has unavoidable non-recyclable waste, check the extra-grey-bin eligibility route.
What to choose on Bury’s “Request a bin” page

If you want an extra grey bin, prepare the evidence first
- Utility bill confirming the address.
- Evidence showing the number of children in the household where relevant.
- Bank statement or mobile bill for adults in the household.
- Evidence that the household is already recycling as much as practical.
- GP evidence may be requested where the need is medical or healthcare-related.
Do not expect a brand-new container: Bury says a supplied bin may be refurbished, but it should be clean and fit for purpose.
Moving into a new-build?
Choose correctly: recycling overflow → extra blue/green; brown overflow → no second brown; unavoidable rubbish → extra grey application with evidence.
£49 does not always mean five large objects
Corner sofa
5 unitsOne corner sofa can use the full standard booking allowance.
Double wardrobe
4 unitsAdd a one-unit bedside cabinet and the booking is full.
Triple sofa
3 unitsA television is two units, so those two objects together use five units.
Washer or dryer
3 unitsA double mattress counts as two units, giving another five-unit example.
Before booking
- Check the council’s item-count list.
- You cannot add extra items after booking.
- The £49 charge is non-refundable if you cancel.
- No refund is given if items are missing when the crew arrives.
- Bookings can be made up to three weeks ahead.
Where to leave the items
- Usual bin collection point, front garden or driveway.
- Keep objects whole rather than smashed into pieces.
- Keep soft furniture dry and covered.
- Do not leave items in a back garden, shed, garage or inside a flat/property.
Council Tax benefit: qualifying residents can request one half-price bulky collection per year by calling 0161 253 5353.
Before paying: total the units, not the number of physical objects.
Assisted collection and communal bins use different checks

You can apply if disability, ill health, age or mobility problems prevent you wheeling bins to the kerbside.
Another adult may affect approval
You may not qualify if another person over 16 lives with you and can put the bins out.
Crew collects and returns bins
If approved, the crew uses an agreed point at the property and returns containers after emptying.
Within 7 working days
Bury says it normally assesses the application and informs the resident of the decision within seven working days.
Communal bins: large items or extra rubbish left on the floor/on top of shared containers are not part of the normal collection and may be treated as fly-tipping. Wrong materials can also cause a shared recycling bin to be left.
Recurring mobility problem: apply for assisted collection instead of repeatedly struggling to meet the 7am kerbside rule.

What time should I put my Bury bin out?
