Brighton Bin Collection: Days, Calendar & Schedule 2026
Need your Brighton bin collection day? Start with Brighton & Hove City Council’s live address checker. It shows the next rubbish, recycling, food-waste and subscribed garden-waste collection that applies to your property.
This guide then explains what to put out, the 6am kerbside rule, Brighton’s weekly food-waste service, missed-bin reporting, garden-waste charges, communal bins, recycling and the two household recycling sites.
Brighton Bin Collection 2026: Quick Answer
There is no single Brighton collection date that works for every street. Use the council’s live bin, box and caddy collection checker, select your property and follow the date shown for your address.
For ordinary kerbside rubbish and recycling, put the correct bin or box on or by the pavement at the front of the property the night before or by 6am. Kerbside food-waste caddies have an earlier deadline: put them out the night before or by 5am.

How to Check Your Brighton Bin Collection Day
The council’s collection checker is the safest answer to searches such as “Brighton bin collection this week”, “what bin goes out tomorrow?” and “Brighton bin calendar 2026”. It can return the services that apply to the selected property rather than giving a generic citywide date.
-
Open Brighton & Hove City Council’s collection checker.
Use the live council form rather than an old screenshot, neighbour’s calendar or social-media post. -
Search for your property.
Follow the address search and make sure the result relates to the home whose bins you are checking. -
Read the waste stream as well as the date.
Rubbish, recycling, food waste and subscribed garden waste can appear as separate services. -
Check the service status if the expected collection has not happened.
The status matters because the missed-collection form treats a completed round differently from one that is still outstanding. -
Recheck around holidays or service changes.
A live property result is safer than automatically moving a collection by one day.
Brighton Bin Collection Schedule 2026
Brighton & Hove has several collection arrangements, so the address checker should always override a simplified schedule. The table below is a practical service overview, not a replacement for your property calendar.
| Service | 2026 position | Normal presentation | Best check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kerbside household rubbish | Weekly service remains the current model in 2026. | Night before or by 6am. | Live property checker. |
| Kerbside recycling | Collection date depends on the property calendar. | Night before or by 6am. | Live property checker. |
| Food waste | Weekly citywide household service. | Kerbside caddy night before or by 5am. | Live property checker. |
| Garden waste | Paid subscription; normally every 2 weeks except the winter break. | Visible on pavement by 6am. | Subscription + property calendar. |
| Communal / shared bins | Different service arrangement from an individual kerbside wheelie-bin round. | Use the designated shared containers. | Communal-bin guidance and live status. |
Is Brighton Changing Rubbish Collections to Fortnightly?
Brighton & Hove City Council’s Cabinet agreed on 17 July 2026 to continue modelling and preparing for a fortnightly residential kerbside residual-waste model, with a view to implementation by July 2027.
That future change remains subject to operational readiness and a final Cabinet decision. It does not mean households should start using a fortnightly rubbish timetable during 2026.
For now, use the live collection checker and follow the current dates returned for your property. This is especially important because communal-bin services and other collection streams are separate from the proposed kerbside residual-waste change.
When and Where to Put Brighton Bins Out
Ready by 6am
Put kerbside wheelie bins or boxes on or by the pavement at the front of the property the night before or by 6am on collection day.
Ready by 5am
Kerbside outdoor food caddies should be visible at the edge of the property the night before or by 5am.
Make the container reachable
Council crews do not normally climb walls, open gates or negotiate steps to reach ordinary kerbside bins and boxes.
What Goes in Brighton’s Green Rubbish Bin?
The green wheelie bin is for ordinary non-recyclable household rubbish. The council asks residents to contain this waste in a bag or sack before placing it in the bin.
Use it for
- General non-recyclable household rubbish
- Waste that does not belong in a council recycling stream
Keep these out
- Household recycling
- Electrical items
- Clothing and textiles
- Large household items
- DIY waste
- Garden waste and soil
Incorrect items can prevent a bin being collected. If you are unsure about an item, use the council’s recycling guidance rather than guessing.
What Can Go in Brighton Recycling Bins and Boxes?
Outside the central communal-bin areas, many properties use a black recycling wheelie bin or recycling boxes. Mixed recycling and glass have separate rules.
Black bin or boxes
- Empty, rinsed tins and cans
- Empty aerosols
- Clean, flattened cardboard
- Paper, magazines and window envelopes
- Rinsed plastic bottles
- Rinsed plastic pots, tubs and trays
Glass box or communal glass bin
- Glass bottles
- Glass jars
- Rinse containers before recycling
- Metal lids can remain on
Brighton Food Waste Collections in 2026
Brighton & Hove completed the citywide rollout of household food-waste collections on 9 March 2026. The service now covers kerbside households, blocks of flats and communal on-street areas across the city.
Kerbside homes
Use the indoor kitchen caddy, transfer food to the outdoor caddy and put the outdoor container at the collection point by 5am on collection day.
Frequency
Kerbside food waste is collected weekly. Council crews can operate between 5am and 10pm on the collection day.
Shared-bin properties
Blocks of flats and communal areas can use shared food-waste bins, which the council collects at least weekly.
Food that can go in the caddy
- Cooked and uncooked food
- Bread, pasta and rice
- Fruit and vegetables
- Meat, fish and bones
- Dairy products
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
Keep out
- Food packaging
- Plastic bags
- Liquids
- Non-food household rubbish
Brighton Communal Bins and Flats
Central Brighton and parts of Hove use communal or shared containers, so residents in these areas should not assume they have the same “put one wheelie bin out on collection morning” routine as a kerbside house.
Communal rubbish
Use large shared black bins for non-recyclable household rubbish only. Do not leave recyclable or bulky material beside them.
Communal recycling
Use the labelled shared recycling containers and keep glass or other separately collected streams in the correct container.
Shared food bins
Food-waste bins are available for communal areas and can be used whenever residents need to empty their indoor caddy.
Brighton Bin Not Collected? Check the Status Before Reporting
Brighton & Hove now uses collection-status information to distinguish a genuine missed collection from a round the council already knows is incomplete.
-
Check the collection date and status.
Confirm that the relevant rubbish, recycling, garden or food-waste service was due for your property. -
If the status says “completed” but your container is still full, report it.
The council can investigate the missed collection. -
If the status has not been marked complete, do not submit another missed report.
The council states that it is already aware that the collection has not taken place. -
Report within the allowed window.
A missed collection can be reported up to 6 days after the scheduled collection date. -
Keep access and contamination in mind.
Roadworks, parked vehicles, operational issues, incorrect materials and overloaded rounds can all affect collections.
| Waste type | Council catch-up target | Resident action |
|---|---|---|
| Household refuse | Where possible, within 48 hours | Follow the report/status instructions. |
| Food waste | Where possible, within 48 hours | Keep the caddy accessible as directed. |
| Recycling | Where possible, within 72 hours | Follow live status and council instructions. |
| Garden waste | Where possible, within 72 hours | Subscription must apply to the collection. |
Brighton Garden Waste Collection 2026/27
Garden waste is a separate paid subscription. Current council information lists an annual charge of £102 for the 2026/27 service, with a 240-litre garden-waste bin and collection normally every two weeks except during the winter break.
£102
Published annual subscription basis for the 2026/27 scheme.
Every 2 weeks
Except during the service’s winter break.
240 litres
The standard subscribed garden-waste wheelie-bin size.
Up to 3
Households can have up to three garden-waste subscriptions.
Important 2026 subscription changes
- From 1 June 2026, new subscriptions use the fixed service period running from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, with the new-subscription cost calculated pro rata from the £102 annual charge.
- From 23 June 2026, a £20 setup fee applies to each new subscription.
- The garden bin should be presented and visible on the pavement by 6am on collection day.
Need Help Moving Your Brighton Bin?
The council offers assisted collections where a resident physically cannot move ordinary rubbish or recycling bins or boxes to the collection point and does not have someone who can do it for them.
What the service can do
An agreed collection point can be used so crews collect and return eligible containers without the resident having to move them to the pavement.
How long it normally lasts
Council guidance says an assisted collection normally lasts 12 months, although a shorter temporary period can be requested.
Sofa, Mattress or Large Electrical Item?
A large household item should not be placed inside an ordinary wheelie bin or abandoned beside a communal bin. Brighton & Hove provides a separate large and electrical household-item collection service, while reusable items may have donation or reuse options.
Choose the right disposal route
Brighton & Hove Household Waste Recycling Sites
Brighton & Hove has two household waste recycling sites. They are useful for accepted household waste that does not belong in normal kerbside or communal collections.
Wilson Avenue site
The Brighton household recycling site is off Wilson Avenue. Pedestrian access is not permitted because the council does not have a safe walking route into this site.
Old Shoreham Road site
The Hove site is accessed off Old Shoreham Road. Pedestrians can use the designated safe route from St Joseph’s Close during normal opening hours.
| Access question | Brighton site | Hove site |
|---|---|---|
| Cars | Resident access subject to council rules. | Resident access subject to council rules. |
| Pedestrians | No pedestrian access. | Designated pedestrian route available. |
| Bicycles / cargo bikes | Permitted; join vehicle queue and follow staff direction. | Permitted; designated pedestrian route can also be used when dismounted. |
| Trailer | Not permitted. | Trailers up to 1.2m accepted under the published rules. |
| Trade waste | Not accepted. | Not accepted. |
Take proof of residency when required
Drivers may be asked for identification showing a Brighton & Hove address. Van and commercial-style vehicle users have additional proof-of-residency and vehicle rules, and some vehicle types are not permitted.
Lost, Damaged or Missing Bin, Box or Food Caddy
Brighton & Hove provides an online route for new, damaged or lost household containers. The council can also consider a different-size bin in some circumstances.
Lost or damaged
Use the official request service rather than buying an unapproved replacement container.
Bigger rubbish bin
The council may assess household circumstances and recycling behaviour before approving additional residual-waste capacity.
Food caddy
Food-waste collection is now available citywide, so use the current replacement-caddy route when equipment is missing or damaged.
Bank Holidays, Christmas and Collection Changes
Do not automatically assume a Brighton collection moves to the next day after every bank holiday. Operational arrangements vary, and the live property checker is the safer source.
Before a bank holiday
Check your property calendar instead of applying a generic one-day delay.
Christmas and New Year
Recheck the council’s festive collection information because garden waste and other services can have special arrangements.
Weather or access disruption
Use the live collection status to see whether the round is complete before reporting an individual missed bin.

Brighton Bin Collection FAQs
How do I find my Brighton bin collection day?
Use Brighton & Hove City Council’s live bin, box and caddy collection checker and select your property. It can show your next rubbish, recycling, food-waste and subscribed garden-waste collections.
What time should I put my Brighton wheelie bin out?
Ordinary kerbside rubbish and recycling bins or boxes should be put out the night before or by 6am on collection day. Kerbside food-waste caddies should be out the night before or by 5am.
Are Brighton rubbish collections fortnightly in 2026?
No. The existing weekly kerbside residual-waste model remains in place in 2026. In July 2026 the council agreed to continue preparing for a possible fortnightly residential kerbside residual-waste model with a view to July 2027, subject to operational readiness and a final Cabinet decision.
How often is food waste collected in Brighton?
Kerbside food waste is collected weekly. Shared food-waste bins for flats and communal areas are collected at least once a week.
What should I do if my Brighton bin was missed?
Check the live collection status first. If the service is marked completed but your container was not collected, use the council’s missed-collection route. If the status is not complete, the council says it is already aware that the collection has not taken place.
How long do I have to report a missed Brighton collection?
The council says a missed rubbish, recycling, food-waste or garden-waste collection can be reported up to 6 days after the scheduled collection date.
How much is Brighton garden waste in 2026/27?
The current annual basis is £102. New subscriptions from 1 June 2026 are calculated pro rata within the fixed 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 service period, and a £20 setup fee applies to each new subscription from 23 June 2026.
Where are Brighton and Hove household recycling sites?
The city has one household recycling site off Wilson Avenue in Brighton and another off Old Shoreham Road in Hove. Access rules differ, so check the council site before travelling.
Can I walk into the Brighton recycling site?
No. The council states that the Brighton site does not have pedestrian access because there is no safe walking route. The Hove site has a designated pedestrian route from St Joseph’s Close during normal opening hours.
Best Next Step: Check the Exact Property
For a Brighton bin collection in 2026, start with the live council calendar rather than a generic street timetable. Confirm the property, waste stream, collection date and presentation time.
If the expected collection does not happen, check its live status before filing a missed report. That one step helps distinguish a genuinely missed bin from a round the council already knows is still incomplete.
