Babergh Bin Collection 2026: Check Your Day, Calendar & New Three-Week Schedule
Babergh’s household bin system changed significantly on 1 June 2026. General rubbish, mixed recycling and the separate paper-and-card stream now run on three-weekly schedules, while food waste is collected every week.
Your actual collection date still depends on the property. Use Babergh District Council’s postcode checker or its published collection calendar rather than calculating the next date from an old pre-June schedule.
Babergh Bin Collection: Quick Answer
From 1 June 2026, Babergh households receive weekly food-waste collections, while black refuse, blue mixed recycling and green-lidded paper/card collections operate on separate three-weekly schedules.
Put the correct bin at the edge of your property boundary by 6am, with the handle facing the road or pavement and the lid firmly closed. Use the council’s postcode checker for your exact date.

How to Check Your Babergh Bin Collection Day
A three-weekly frequency does not tell you which calendar week belongs to your property. Babergh therefore provides an address-based collection checker alongside downloadable schedule calendars.
-
Open the official collection-day page.
Use Babergh District Council’s current service rather than an older pre-June 2026 timetable. -
Enter the full postcode.
Select the exact household address returned by the checker. -
Read the container and date together.
Make a note such as “Blue recycling — Tuesday 6 October” instead of saving only the weekday. -
Check weekly food waste separately.
For most addresses it is collected on the same weekday as the main scheduled bin, but by a separate crew. -
Check garden waste separately if subscribed.
Brown garden bins use a different fortnightly schedule.
Babergh Bin Collection Schedule from June 2026
Babergh’s redesigned collection system started on 1 June 2026. The change introduced weekly food waste, separated paper and cardboard from mixed recycling, expanded the recyclable materials accepted in the blue bin and moved the three main wheeled-bin streams to three-weekly collection.
| Waste stream | Container | Frequency | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| General rubbish | Black refuse bin | Every 3 weeks | Household waste that cannot use another collection stream. |
| Mixed recycling | Blue bin | Every 3 weeks | Glass, plastics, metal, cartons and other accepted mixed recycling. |
| Paper & cardboard | Green-lidded bin | Every 3 weeks | Separate clean paper and card stream. |
| Food waste | 23L outdoor food bin | Weekly | Household food waste separated from the black bin. |
| Garden waste | Brown subscribed bin | Fortnightly | Optional paid garden-waste service. |
Babergh Bin Types After the 2026 Changes
Black refuse bin
Used for general rubbish that cannot be recycled through the household recycling, paper/card or food-waste services.
Blue recycling bin
The blue bin now takes Babergh’s mixed recycling stream, including accepted glass, plastics, metal and cartons.
Green-lidded bin
This newer separate stream is specifically for paper and cardboard.
23L food-waste bin
The lockable outdoor food bin is collected weekly. A smaller 5L kitchen caddy is provided for preparing food waste indoors.
Brown garden bin
Used for the optional paid garden-waste service and collected on a separate fortnightly schedule.
Alternative arrangements
Where a property cannot reasonably accommodate standard bins, the council can consider smaller bins, sacks or another suitable arrangement.
What Goes in the Babergh Blue Recycling Bin?
The 2026 system expanded the materials accepted in Babergh’s blue recycling stream. Paper and card are now kept separate in the green-lidded bin.
Newer accepted materials include
- Glass bottles and jars
- Drink and food cartons
- Plastic carrier bags
- Plastic wrapping
- Plastic films
- Suitable food bags
- Bubble wrap
Keep recycling usable
Empty recyclable packaging and keep paper/card out of this stream. Incorrect material can result in the bin not being emptied.
Green-Lidded Paper and Card Bin
Babergh households now have a separate green-lidded 240-litre bin for paper and cardboard. Keeping fibre material away from glass and other containers helps prevent contamination and improves recycling quality.
Weekly Babergh Food-Waste Collection
Weekly food-waste collection is one of the major changes introduced in June 2026. Standard households should have received a 23-litre lockable outdoor food bin and a smaller 5-litre kitchen caddy.
Leftovers
Plate scrapings, leftover meals and food that has gone out of date can use the food-waste service.
Meat & dairy
Cooked or uncooked meat and fish, bones, eggshells and dairy products are accepted.
Everyday food
Bread, rice, pasta, fruit, vegetables, salad, tea bags, coffee grounds and leftover pet food can also be included.
Black Refuse Bin: What It Is For
Use the black bin for household rubbish that cannot go into the recycling, paper/card, food or garden-waste services. Ash, dust and similar loose material should be securely wrapped or bagged before being placed inside.
Batteries, electrical items, clinical sharps, building waste, soil, asbestos, tyres, garden waste and bulky furniture should not go in the black refuse bin.
Babergh Garden Waste: £71 Annual Subscription
Babergh’s brown-bin garden-waste service is optional and chargeable. The current published annual price is £71 per brown bin.
£71 annually
The annual Babergh subscription applies to each garden-waste bin.
£21 setup charge
A new or additional subscription currently carries a one-off £21 administration charge.
Fortnightly
Brown garden bins are normally collected every two weeks, with a short Christmas and New Year pause.
What can go in the brown bin?
- Grass cuttings
- Leaves
- Dead plants and flowers
- Hedge trimmings
- Shrubs
- Small branches and twigs no thicker than 7cm
- Tree prunings
- Suitable weeds
- Small amounts of windfall fruit
Babergh Collection-Day Rules
Ready by 6am
Put the scheduled container out by 6am on the collection day or leave it out the previous night.
Use the property boundary
Leave the bin clearly visible at the edge of the property nearest the public highway unless another collection point has been agreed.
Handle towards the road
Position the handle towards the road or pavement, keep the lid closed and make sure the container can be moved safely.
The council also asks residents to clearly label bins with their house number or property name and bring them back inside the property boundary by 7pm after collection, unless the round has been delayed.
Babergh Bin Not Emptied: When and How to Report It
Do not submit a missed-bin report as soon as the usual collection time passes. Babergh asks residents to wait until 5:30pm on collection day.
-
Confirm the bin was due.
Check your current postcode calendar and make sure the correct waste stream was scheduled. -
Check current service delays.
If the council already lists your road, leave the bin out and do not submit another report. -
Review the presentation rules.
Check that it was out by 6am, correctly positioned, closed and not too heavy. -
Check for contamination or stuck contents.
A rejected, partially emptied or jammed bin is not treated the same as a genuinely missed collection. -
Report within two working days.
Use the official missed-collection form once the reporting window opens.
Still Missing Your New 2026 Bins or Food Caddy?
Babergh says households that have still not received the new containers introduced with the June 2026 service should contact Waste Services.
Once the new containers arrive, move to the current separated collection system shown on your property calendar.
Need a Larger or Additional Bin?
The three-weekly refuse system can create capacity concerns for larger households or homes with exceptional needs. Babergh allows residents to apply for larger or additional containers where the qualifying criteria are met.
Extra recycling capacity
Larger or additional household recycling bins are currently provided free of charge.
Extra refuse capacity
Eligible larger or additional refuse bins currently cost £47. Refuse capacity depends on household circumstances and eligibility.
Need Help Moving Your Bins?
Babergh offers a free assisted-collection service where a resident has difficulty putting bins out because of a permanent disability or medical condition and nobody else at the property can move the containers.
The service can involve collecting the bins from an agreed point and returning them after emptying. Crews cannot collect from inside a house, garage or shed, and the route cannot require carrying bins up or down steps or over unsuitable surfaces such as deep gravel.
Babergh Bulky Waste Collection: Current £72 Charge
Large household items should not be left beside normal bins. Babergh provides a separate paid collection service for suitable bulky household waste.
£72
The current Babergh charge covers one qualifying bulky collection booking.
Up to 5 items
One booking can cover up to five separate accepted bulky household items.
Or up to 10 bags
The service can alternatively cover up to ten bags of household refuse and/or garden waste under the published conditions.
Items must be placed where there is street access by 6:30am on the collection date. Crews do not enter homes, sheds, garages or back gardens and cannot carry items up or down steps.
Household Recycling Centres for Babergh Residents
Household recycling centres in Suffolk are managed separately through Suffolk’s recycling service rather than by Babergh District Council’s kerbside team.
Use the current Suffolk recycling-centre information before travelling to confirm the most suitable facility, opening arrangements, vehicle rules, accepted materials and any visit requirements.
Bank Holidays and Babergh Bin Collection Changes
Collection dates can change around bank holidays. Babergh’s published schedules state that collections following a bank holiday can run one day later than normal for the remainder of that week.

Best Next Step: Use the New 2026 Babergh Calendar
Babergh’s pre-June collection pattern is no longer the correct basis for planning your household bins. Start with the postcode checker and use the exact property result.
The current core pattern is straightforward: black refuse every three weeks, blue recycling every three weeks, green-lidded paper/card every three weeks and food waste every week.
