Castle Point Bin Collection Days: Calendar, Sack Colours & Recycling

Wondering whether to put out black sacks, pink recycling, glass or food waste? Castle Point Borough Council provides an address-based collection calendar covering its household waste services.

This guide explains the usual collection pattern, the October–November 2026 recycling changes, missed collections, garden waste subscriptions and the council rules that help you prepare your waste correctly.

Quick Answer: When Are Castle Point Bins Collected?

Black sack rubbish is normally collected every other week, with recycling on the alternating fortnight. Food waste is collected weekly, and the garden waste service runs weekly for eligible paid bins or approved sacks. The exact weekday depends on your address.

Use the official Castle Point recycling calendar to check whether your next collection covers general rubbish, pink and blue sacks, glass, food waste or garden waste.

Put the correct waste at the required collection point by 7am, no earlier than the evening before. Christmas and bank holiday changes should always be checked separately.

How to Check Your Castle Point Bin Collection Calendar

Castle Point Borough Council is responsible for household refuse and recycling collections in areas including Canvey Island, Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersley and South Benfleet.

Collection days vary between properties. Do not rely on a date given for a neighbouring street or assume that the same weekday applies everywhere in the borough.

  1. Open the council recycling calendar. Use the official collection-calendar service.
  2. Find your property. Follow the address search and select your exact home where prompted.
  3. Identify the collection stream. Look for rubbish, recycling, glass, food waste and any garden service relevant to your property.
  4. Check the next date. Confirm both the collection day and the container being collected.
  5. Recheck around holidays. If Christmas, a bank holiday or a reported disruption is approaching, look for updated council instructions.
Why the exact address matters: most households retain their normal collection day during the recycling changes, but Castle Point Council says a small number of food-waste routes will change. Affected residents should receive advance notice.

Castle Point Collection Frequency: What Comes Each Week?

The council’s standard service uses different cycles for different waste streams. General rubbish and dry recycling are typically on alternate fortnights, while food waste is collected each week.

Castle Point Bin Types and Sack Colours Explained

Castle Point mainly uses sacks, boxes and food caddies rather than a single set of coloured wheelie bins for every household. The new blue paper sack is especially important in autumn 2026.

Black sacks

General non-recyclable rubbish

Use for household waste that cannot be placed in a designated recycling or food-waste collection.

  • Keep recyclable packaging separate.
  • Do not add food waste that belongs in the caddy.
  • Keep electrical batteries and vapes out.
  • Present on the correct fortnightly rubbish date.
Pink sacks

Mixed packaging recycling

Following the new service rollout, use pink sacks for accepted plastic packaging, cans, aerosols, foil, cartons and soft plastic films.

  • Plastic bottles, pots, trays and tubs
  • Food and drink cans
  • Empty aerosols and foil
  • Accepted Tetra Pak-style cartons
  • Soft plastics such as cling film and crisp packets after rollout
New blue sacks

Paper and cardboard

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Letters, envelopes and office paper
  • Catalogues and leaflets
  • Clean cardboard boxes and packaging

Use the blue sack once the new paper-and-card service has started for your collection route.

Yellow / green glass box

Glass bottles and jars

Use the council-provided glass box for accepted bottles and jars. Empty and clean them before placing them out.

Do not treat drinking glasses, mirrors or window glass as ordinary bottle-and-jar recycling.

Food caddy

Weekly food waste

For raw and cooked food scraps, plate leftovers, meat, bones, bread, fruit and vegetable peelings.

Use council-compatible liners or newspaper and keep liquids and ordinary food packaging out.

Garden waste

Brown bin or approved garden sacks

For grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, weeds and suitable small branches.

Only the council-authorised containers and sacks are collected; a subscription permit is required for the brown wheelie bin.

October–November 2026 Recycling Changes: Pink and Blue Sacks

Castle Point Borough Council is introducing separate paper and card collections in two phases. This is not simply a colour change: residents must begin separating paper and cardboard from other mixed packaging when their route moves to the new system.

From 2 October 2026

The new blue sack system is active for homes whose recycling collection day is Friday.

From 2 November 2026

The new system is scheduled to begin for homes whose recycling collections take place Monday to Thursday.

What goes where after your changeover?

Important for October 2026: if your recycling collection is Monday to Thursday, continue following the current instructions until your 2 November changeover. Castle Point Council says pink and blue sacks are being supplied before the change. Do not move paper and card into the blue sacks prematurely on a route that has not started the new service.

The blue and pink sacks will be collected on the same recycling day. Council guidance says the normal fortnightly frequency is not changing.

If your Friday-route property has not received its new sacks, email [email protected].

Castle Point Waste Presentation Rules: Time and Collection Point

The council requires household waste and recycling to be presented properly. Placing waste out too early, using the wrong sack or leaving material at the wrong collection point can create problems for collection crews and pedestrians.

Ready by 7am

Make sure all scheduled containers and sacks are presented by 7am on collection day.

Not too early

Do not place household refuse or recycling out before the evening preceding collection.

Property boundary

For homes fronting a road, use the relevant property boundary collection point.

Walkway access

Where a property fronts a walkway, use the designated refuse and pink sack collection point. Other containers may need to be presented at the property boundary.

Separate correctly

Keep food waste out of recycling sacks, and keep unsuitable materials out of garden waste.

Keep access safe

Avoid blocking pavements, driveways and access routes with sacks or bins.

Enforcement: Castle Point’s published waste presentation rules refer to a possible £80 fixed penalty notice for relevant breaches under its statutory notice. Correct presentation is therefore more than a convenience recommendation.

Castle Point Weekly Food Waste Collection

Castle Point has a separate weekly household food-waste service. Homes use a smaller kitchen caddy and an outdoor caddy that is presented for collection.

Accepted food waste

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Cooked and uncooked leftovers
  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Bread, rice and pasta
  • Dairy products
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Egg shells

Keep these out

  • Food wrappers and packaging
  • Liquids, oil and loose gravy
  • Dog waste or animal bedding
  • Ordinary plastic bags
  • Garden waste and soil

Food that has gone off can still be placed in the food-waste service. The council says food can be wrapped in newspaper or placed in compatible caddy liners. Rinse the caddy occasionally and keep the outdoor lid securely locked to help prevent animals accessing the contents.

Replacement or additional caddies can be requested through Castle Point Council. Its published contact number is 01268 882200.

Castle Point Missed Bin Collection: Reporting Deadline and Steps

If your waste was not taken, check the collection calendar before reporting it. The council requires missed collections to be reported within two working days of the correct collection day.

  1. Check the scheduled date. Make sure the missing collection was due for your property and waste type.
  2. Confirm presentation. Waste should have been at the correct collection point by 7am.
  3. Look for a rejection notice. Recycling left because of contamination is not the same as a missed collection.
  4. Open the missed collection page. Follow the council’s online missed collection form.
  5. Report within two working days. Give the requested address, waste type and collection information.
  6. Follow the council’s instructions. Keep the waste available if a return collection has been arranged.
If the collection was missed by the council: Castle Point says it will try to collect reported missed waste as soon as resources allow. Its garden-bin terms describe an aim to return by the end of the following working day where a correctly presented subscribed bin was missed.

For assistance, call 01268 882200. If the wrong waste was placed in a recycling sack, correct the contents and present the sack at the next suitable collection.

Castle Point Garden Waste Collection and 2026/27 Subscription

Castle Point offers weekly garden-waste collections through a paid brown wheeled-bin subscription or council-approved compostable garden waste sacks.

The subscription year runs from 1 April to 31 March. The council lists a standard 2026/27 bin subscription of £43, with an October reduction to £21.50 for the remainder of that year. Check the live payment page before completing a transaction.

2026/27 annual fee£43 per bin
October remainder fee£21.50
Approved sacks£8 for 20
Collection patternWeekly, with exceptions

How to use the garden waste service

  1. Choose your option. Subscribe for a council brown wheeled bin, or buy the council-approved garden waste sacks.
  2. Pay through the correct route. Use the live council subscription service for a bin or an approved sales point for sacks.
  3. Check the permit. A subscribed bin must display the current sticker, normally under the handles on the back.
  4. Fill it correctly. Include grass, leaves, flowers, weeds and suitable small branches only.
  5. Present by 7am. Put the bin or approved sacks at the required property boundary on the scheduled day.

Approved garden waste sacks are available through the council’s named leisure centres and libraries, including Benfleet, Hadleigh, Tarpots and Canvey Island libraries. Supermarket or ordinary black sacks are not substitutes for council-approved garden sacks.

Branches and logs within the council’s stated limits of up to 7cm in diameter and 1m in length can be presented under its bundle rules, with a maximum of two bundles per collection.

Christmas exception: the brown wheeled-bin service has published seasonal collection exclusions around Christmas and the following two weeks. Check the current garden collection calendar rather than assuming a collection every week of December.

New bins may take up to 28 days to arrive. The council-owned wheelie bin must carry the valid sticker and cannot be replaced by a privately purchased bin for collection purposes.

Flats, Shared Bins and Communal Recycling in Castle Point

Flats may use shared recycling bins with pink lids instead of the ordinary kerbside sack arrangement. Only the materials and sacks specified for the communal service should be placed inside.

Castle Point warns that putting a black refuse sack in a communal recycling bin can contaminate the contents. Repeated contamination can affect whether a recycling container remains available for the building.

Existing communal recycling

Follow the label and instructions on the shared bin. Keep ordinary refuse and food waste out of the recycling container.

No recycling space at your building?

Ask the council what kerbside collection options are available. Its 2026 changeover guidance also explains how residents may obtain pink and blue sacks and use suitable alternative recycling routes.

If communal recycling contamination is a continuing problem, email [email protected].

Assisted Waste Collections for Residents Who Cannot Move Bins

Castle Point provides an assisted collection service for qualifying elderly or disabled residents who have difficulty presenting waste at the normal collection point.

Contact [email protected] to explain the problem and ask about eligibility and the practical collection arrangement for your property.

If you already receive assisted collections, the council says you do not need to submit a separate request just because the new blue recycling sacks are being introduced.

Castle Point Clothing and Textile Collections

Castle Point works with Essex Textiles to collect suitable household clothing and textiles. Since February 2026, the collection arrangement has been a pre-booked Wednesday service.

Accepted textiles

  • Clean reusable clothing
  • Paired shoes and boots
  • Blankets and towels
  • Bed linen

How to book

Call or text 07985 584659, or email [email protected].

Use white textile sacks or suitable bags and place them at your doorstep by 7am on the booked Wednesday.

Do not confuse the two blue sacks: old blue textile sacks were replaced by white textile sacks. The new blue sacks introduced in autumn 2026 are for paper and cardboard recycling, not textiles.

Bulky Waste: Sofas, Mattresses and Large Household Items

Castle Point operates a chargeable bulky household waste collection service. Large items should not be placed beside ordinary black sacks expecting the usual refuse collection crew to remove them.

Reuse first

If furniture or an appliance is safe and usable, consider a local reuse or charitable donation route.

General bulky waste

Examples include suitable household furniture and white goods, subject to the council’s current acceptance rules.

Upholstered seating

Sofas, armchairs and similar upholstered seating require a separate collection arrangement because of persistent organic pollutant disposal rules.

The council’s published charge is £49.18 for up to three items, plus £7.60 for each additional item, with a normal maximum of ten items. Separate upholstered and general bulky waste loads can incur separate minimum charges.

General bulky waste collections are normally on Mondays and upholstered seating collections on Tuesdays, with some additional Friday arrangements when busy. Actual booking availability must be confirmed with the council.

Call 01268 882200 or email [email protected] to discuss accepted items and booking.

Canvey Household Recycling Centre: Where to Take Extra Waste

Household waste recycling centres in Essex are managed by Essex County Council rather than Castle Point Borough Council. This matters because booking requirements, vehicle rules and accepted materials are controlled by the county service.

Canvey Recycling Centre

Location:
Canvey Road
Canvey Island

Check the current opening hours and accepted waste types through Essex County Council before travelling.

Before you travel

  • Check whether a booking is required.
  • Confirm access and vehicle restrictions.
  • Separate materials before loading.
  • Check any rules for hazardous or DIY waste.
  • Do not assume business waste is accepted as household waste.

For county recycling-centre information, Castle Point directs residents to Essex County Council and Love Essex. The county contact number published by Castle Point is 0345 743 0430.

Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collection Changes

Collection dates may change during Christmas, other bank holidays or major service disruptions. The council can also announce alternative presentation instructions following severe weather.

The correct approach is to check the official calendar for the specific affected week. Do not apply an old December timetable to Christmas 2026.

  1. Open the Castle Point collection calendar.
  2. Find the relevant collection week and waste stream.
  3. Check the council’s current refuse and recycling notices for altered dates.
  4. Check garden waste separately because its Christmas service conditions differ from other streams.
