BANES Bin Collection: Dates, Calendar, Bin Colours & Missed Reports
Bath & North East Somerset Council, usually shortened to B&NES or BANES, collects household recycling and food waste every week and standard rubbish every other week. Your exact dates depend on the property, so use the council’s live collection-day finder rather than counting weeks from an old calendar.
Collection routes changed for a small number of households from 7 September 2026. Put rubbish, recycling and subscribed garden waste at the correct collection point by 6am, or no earlier than 8pm the night before.
BANES Bin Collection: Quick Answer
For a standard household in Bath and North East Somerset, recycling and food waste are collected weekly, while the normal black rubbish bin or reusable rubbish bag is collected every other week. Paid garden waste is normally collected every other week during its operating season.
Your actual dates are address-specific. Because B&NES changed some collection rounds from 7 September 2026, check the current council collection-day finder before relying on an older printed calendar.

How to Check Your BANES Bin Collection Date
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s live collection-day service is the safest way to answer “what bin goes out this week?” because the result is based on the exact property.
-
Open the B&NES rubbish and recycling service.
Choose the collection-day finder from the council waste page. -
Search your address.
Use the exact property rather than another house on the same road. -
Check each service separately.
Look for recycling, food waste, rubbish and garden waste if you subscribe. -
Use the current result after September 2026.
A small number of routes changed from 7 September, so an older reminder may now be wrong. -
Prepare everything before 6am.
Containers can be put out from 8pm the night before.
BANES Bin Collection Schedule
| Service | Normal frequency | Main container |
|---|---|---|
| General rubbish | Every other week | Black wheelie bin or reusable rubbish bag |
| Dry recycling | Every week | Green recycling boxes and blue recycling bag |
| Food waste | Every week | Outdoor food-waste bin |
| Paid garden waste | Every other week in the operating season | Subscribed green garden bin or council-branded sack |
BANES Bin Colours and Waste Containers
B&NES uses several containers instead of putting all recycling into one wheelie bin. Sorting the material correctly before collection is important because different recycling streams are processed separately.
Black rubbish bin
For leftover household waste that cannot be recycled. Some properties use a reusable rubbish bag where a wheelie bin is not suitable.
Green recycling boxes
Used for separated dry recycling such as glass, plastic containers, tins, cans and other accepted household materials.
Blue recycling bag
B&NES now asks residents to put suitable paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, egg boxes and cartons in the blue bag.
Food waste container
For household food waste such as leftovers, fruit and vegetable peelings, meat, fish, bread, rice, pasta, tea bags and coffee grounds.
How to Sort B&NES Recycling Correctly
Green recycling box
Use the green boxes for accepted dry recyclables. If you have two boxes, separate materials according to the council’s current sorting instructions.
Batteries should not be placed loose inside the box or rubbish bin. B&NES warns that batteries can cause fires in collection vehicles and processing facilities.
Blue recycling bag
Put suitable paper and cardboard in the blue bag. Remove plastic, sticky tape and polystyrene, and flatten cardboard so large pieces do not obstruct collection.
BANES Missed Bin Collection: When and How to Report It
Do not submit a missed-bin report while the crew may still be working on your road. B&NES says its crews confirm when a road has been completed, and the reporting service only becomes available once the system records that the crew has attended.
-
Check that the service was due.
Reopen the current collection-day finder and confirm the rubbish, recycling or garden-waste date. -
Check for a known service problem.
If your road is already included in a current disruption, follow the council’s published instruction. -
Wait until after 5pm on collection day.
The council allows route changes during the day and may still be collecting later than usual. -
Report within the 24-hour window.
The household missed-bin reporting window runs from after 5pm on collection day until 5pm the following day. -
Leave eligible missed recycling or garden waste available.
The council may return where operationally possible.
BANES Garden Waste Collection 2026/27
Garden waste is an optional paid domestic service. B&NES collects subscribed garden bins every other week and operates a seasonal break during winter.
For the 2026/27 subscription year, B&NES lists a standard garden-waste subscription of £75 from July 2026. A first-time subscriber who needs a wheelie bin also pays the current delivery charge.
The council’s published 2026/27 operating dates are 13 July to 4 December 2026, followed by the winter break, then 18 January to 11 July 2027.
Can You Get a Larger Rubbish Bin in B&NES?
B&NES provides a larger rubbish-bin application route for households with specific extra capacity needs. The council currently lists three common qualifying situations.
Large household
More than six people live permanently in the home.
Children in nappies
Two or more children in full-time nappies live at the property.
Medical need
A household member generates unavoidable additional residual waste because of a medical requirement.
BANES Bin Collections for Flats and Shared Bin Stores
Flats and apartment blocks may use large communal rubbish and recycling containers rather than the standard individual-house setup. B&NES collection guidance describes shared bin rooms using bulk bins and communal recycling containers.
Shared recycling system
Follow the labels on the communal containers rather than assuming the standard green-box and blue-bag arrangement applies to your building.
Limited-storage properties
Some flats in Bath use green recycling sacks instead of standard boxes. These are collected weekly.

BANES Bank Holiday and Christmas Bin Collections
Do not automatically move your collection one day later because a bank holiday occurs. B&NES uses its live collection-day finder and disruption information to show current dates.
Spring and summer bank holidays
Check the property-specific collection finder that week rather than assuming the timetable has shifted.
Christmas and New Year
Festive arrangements can change normal dates. Use the current seasonal information rather than reusing a previous year’s calendar.
B&NES recycling centres normally list separate bank-holiday hours and close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
