Midlothian Bin Collection: Find Your Day, Calendar & Missed-Bin Route
Midlothian’s household collection system changed in March 2026. The new green recycling bin is now used for paper, card and cardboard, while the blue bin is for plastics, cans and cartons. Green, blue and grey wheelie bins now run on a three-week cycle for standard kerbside households.
Your exact dates still depend on your property. Use Midlothian Council’s live collection service, check the address result and put the correct container at its designated collection point by 6:30am.
Midlothian Bin Collection: 30-Second Answer
Use Midlothian Council’s official collection-date service to find the next collection for your address and open the annual calendar. Put the scheduled bin, glass box or food caddy at the designated collection point by 6:30am; collection times can vary during the day.
Since the March 2026 recycling change, the standard kerbside grey, green and blue bins are collected every three weeks. Food waste remains weekly, while glass boxes and subscribed brown garden-waste bins normally continue on a fortnightly cycle.

How to Check Your Midlothian Bin Collection Day
Do not calculate your next collection from a neighbour’s rota or an old calendar. Midlothian Council provides an address-based service showing the next collection dates and an annual calendar that can be saved or printed as a PDF.
-
Open the official Midlothian collection-date service.
Start with the council service rather than an old PDF saved from before the March 2026 recycling changes. -
Find the correct address.
Use the property result that actually matches your home, especially where flats or communal collections use a different setup. -
Read the bin type and date together.
A weekday alone is not enough now that grey, blue and green bins operate as separate three-weekly streams. -
Open or save the annual calendar.
Keep it for planning, but return to the live council service if there is disruption or your household service changes. -
Present the correct container by 6:30am.
Routes and vehicle arrival times vary, so do not rely on the usual time the lorry reaches your street.
Midlothian’s 2026 Bin Changes: The New Green Recycling Bin
Midlothian changed its kerbside recycling system in March 2026. A separate green wheelie bin is now used for paper, card and cardboard. The existing blue bin has changed to a containers-only recycling stream for accepted plastics, cans, foil and cartons.
Green bin
Paper, card and cardboard are collected separately. Flatten cardboard before placing it inside so the bin capacity is used efficiently.
Blue bin
The blue bin is now for clean, dry plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, steel and aluminium cans, cartons, aerosols and accepted foil.
Grey bin
The residual grey bin has moved to the same three-weekly collection cycle as the green and blue wheelie bins.
Current Midlothian Bin Collection Schedule
The frequency below explains the standard collection pattern, not your exact collection date. Your individual property calendar remains the correct source for the day and sequence.
| Container | Main use | Normal frequency | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey bin | Non-recyclable household waste | Every 3 weeks | Use recycling and food-waste services to keep recyclable material out. |
| Green bin | Paper, card and cardboard | Every 3 weeks | Introduced as part of the March 2026 recycling change. |
| Blue bin | Plastics, cans, foil and cartons | Every 3 weeks | Paper and card now belong in the green bin. |
| Glass box | Glass bottles and jars | Normally every 2 weeks | Check the address calendar for the exact date. |
| Food caddy | Cooked and uncooked food waste | Weekly | Food waste should not go in the brown garden bin. |
| Brown bin | Subscribed garden waste | Every 2 weeks in season | A valid paid sticker is required. |

Before 6:30am: Midlothian Collection-Day Checklist
Correct date
Check the live property calendar. Do not put every wheelie bin out simply because it is your normal collection weekday.
Correct collection point
Use your designated collection area, normally at the property boundary beside the pavement, path or road.
Lid fully closed
Do not overfill the bin or use a bungee cord or other attachment to force the lid shut.
Correct contents
Contamination can prevent a collection. Move paper and card to the green bin and containers to the blue bin.
No side waste
Do not place extra bags on or around the wheelie bin as part of the ordinary collection.
Keep access clear
Parked vehicles, roadworks, locked gates, vegetation, dogs or unsafe icy access can prevent crews reaching containers.
Midlothian Bin Not Collected: When and How to Report It
A grey, green, blue or subscribed brown bin can be reported as missed if it has not been emptied by 3pm on the scheduled collection day and it was correctly presented. Midlothian Council asks residents to submit the report by 5pm on the next working day.
-
Check your collection date.
Confirm that the bin was genuinely due at your address. -
Check current service updates.
Severe weather, industrial action, road access or a known area problem can affect the whole route. -
Wait until after 3pm.
Collection times vary, so a full bin in the morning does not mean it has been missed. -
Check how it was presented.
It should have been out by 6:30am, at the correct collection point, not overfilled, with the lid closed and the correct contents inside. -
Look for a tag or rejection reason.
A contaminated, damaged, too-heavy or incorrectly presented bin normally needs correcting rather than reporting as missed. -
Report it before the deadline.
If the collection qualifies, report it by 5pm on the next working day and leave the bin at its designated collection point.
What happens after a valid missed-bin report?
Midlothian Communal Bins and Flats
Homes without enough space for individual wheelie bins can use communal containers. Midlothian Council says its communal household bins are emptied every three weeks on the dates shown in the property’s collection calendar.
Red-lidded communal bin
Used for glass bottles and jars in the communal system.
Blue communal bin
Used for accepted plastic bottles, tubs and trays, tins, cans, cartons, foil and aerosols.
Green communal bin
Used for paper and card, including newspapers, magazines, envelopes, catalogues and flattened cardboard.
Midlothian Brown Bin 2026: £45 Garden-Waste Service
The brown bin is a paid garden-waste service rather than a food-waste bin. For 2026, Midlothian Council lists the charge as £45 per brown bin, with up to six bins per property. Collections normally run every two weeks from March to November.
The current 2026 council information says residents can sign up until 30 September 2026 and that a sticker should arrive within 28 days of payment. Only subscribed brown bins displaying the valid collection sticker are eligible for the garden-waste service.
Accepted garden material
- Flowers and plants
- Grass clippings
- Hedge trimmings
- Garden weeds
- Leaves
- Small permitted branches
- Vegetarian-pet hutch waste
Keep these out
- Food waste
- Plastic bags or bin liners
- General rubbish
- Soil, sand or rubble
- Cat or dog waste
- Plant pots
- Garden furniture
- Chemicals or liquids
Food Waste Is Separate From the Brown Garden Bin
Midlothian’s food-waste service uses a separate caddy and is collected weekly. Cooked and uncooked food can be included. The brown garden bin should not be used for food waste because the garden-waste processing facility is licensed for garden material rather than food.
Food caddy: yes
- Fruit and vegetables
- Meat, fish and bones
- Dairy products
- Bread and pastries
- Rice, pasta and beans
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Leftovers
Useful distinction
Compostable packaging is not treated the same way as food waste in this collection. Midlothian Council currently instructs residents to put compostable packaging in the grey bin.
Household recycling centres also do not accept food waste through their ordinary recycling-centre service.
Need Help Moving Your Bins?
Midlothian offers an assisted collection service where a resident has difficulty moving wheelie bins and nobody else living at the property can do it. Waste Services agrees a suitable collection point rather than requiring the resident to move the bin to the ordinary kerbside point.
Who it is for
The service is intended for households where the resident cannot manage the bins and there is no other person living at the address who can move them.
Collection point
The agreed point can be within 10 metres of the property boundary. You may be asked to keep bins in a more accessible place such as the front rather than the back garden.
Safe route required
The path must be suitable for crews and kept clear of weeds, vegetation, obstacles, locked gates and loose dogs.
Winter access
Untreated icy paths can prevent an assisted collection. Clear and grit the access route where it is safe and practical to do so.
Missing, Damaged or Extra Midlothian Bins
Grey, green and blue wheelie bins can sometimes be repaired where the problem is limited to parts such as lid hinges or wheels. Midlothian Council’s current missing-or-damaged-bin page says it aims to repair or replace containers within approximately 10–14 working days.
Grey / green / blue
Repair may be possible for some hinge, wheel or wheel-spindle faults. Other damage can require replacement.
Brown bin
A brown-bin repair or replacement is linked to having paid for that year’s garden-waste service.
Glass box / food caddy
These are not repaired in the same way. A replacement can be requested and containers may also be available from a recycling centre.
Midlothian Bulky Waste: Furniture, Appliances and Large Items
Midlothian Council offers a chargeable kerbside bulky-waste service for furniture, appliances and household items too large for normal wheelie bins. The current service accepts up to 12 items per uplift, with charges starting from £30; the final cost depends on the items booked.
Book first
Only present the items included in the booking. Electrical items and upholstered seating may be collected separately from other furniture.
Presentation window
Put booked items out by 6:30am on the scheduled date, but no earlier than 12 noon on the previous day.
Keep access clear
Items should be accessible to crews without blocking pedestrians or vehicles and should not be hidden between parked cars or inside a communal bin store.
Midlothian Household Waste Recycling Centres
Midlothian has household recycling centres at Stobhill and Penicuik. They accept waste from Midlothian households, and staff may ask for proof of residence such as a driving licence, Council Tax bill or utility bill.
| Centre | Address | Open | Last entry | Close |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stobhill | Stobhill Road, Newtongrange, EH22 4NU | 09:30 | 16:00 | 16:15 |
| Penicuik | Bellman’s Road, Penicuik, EH26 0AA | 10:00 | 15:45 | 16:15 |
Stobhill-specific items
The council directs mattresses, sofas and other upholstered seating, waste larger than the boot of a car with the back seats up, and waste transported in a van or trailer to Stobhill.
Van or trailer?
Ordinary car visits do not currently use a general appointment system. A booking system applies at Stobhill for vans and trailers, with same-day appointments possible subject to availability.
Snow, Ice, Roadworks or Street-Wide Missed Collections
Weather and access problems are handled differently from an isolated missed bin. If an entire street has not been collected, check Waste Service Updates and leave the containers available where the council asks you to do so.
Whole street affected
Do not immediately file an individual missed-bin report if the council has not collected the rest of the street either.
Snow and ice
Where safe, clear snow from containers and create a usable path so crews can move the bin to the collection vehicle.
Park carefully
Collection vehicles need substantial road space. Avoid parking in a way that blocks narrow streets, corners or access points.

Midlothian Bin Collection FAQs
How do I check my Midlothian bin collection day?
Use Midlothian Council’s official collection-date service, find the correct property and read the next collection dates. You can also open and save the annual calendar for the address.
What time should Midlothian bins be put out?
Put the scheduled bin or container at its designated collection point by 6:30am. Collection times can vary, so do not rely on the vehicle arriving at its usual time.
How often are Midlothian grey, green and blue bins collected in 2026?
Following the March 2026 recycling change, standard kerbside grey, green and blue wheelie bins operate on a three-weekly collection cycle. Check your address calendar for the exact sequence and dates.
What goes in the new green bin in Midlothian?
The green recycling bin is for paper, card and cardboard. The blue bin is now used for accepted plastics, cans, foil and cartons.
When can I report a missed Midlothian bin?
For a grey, green, blue or brown bin, check that it was correctly presented and wait until after 3pm on the scheduled collection day. A qualifying missed collection should be reported by 5pm on the next working day.
How quickly does Midlothian Council return for a missed bin?
When a qualifying wheelie bin was presented correctly but missed by the council, the current service aim is to return within five working days.
Will the council return for a missed food caddy or glass box?
No separate return is normally made for a missed food-waste caddy or glass box. You should still report it by the required deadline, then the container is emptied on its next scheduled collection date.
How much is Midlothian garden waste in 2026?
The 2026 brown-bin garden-waste subscription is £45 per bin, with up to six subscribed bins per property. The current council information says the 2026 service runs until 13 November.
Is food waste collected in the Midlothian brown bin?
No. Food waste uses the separate food caddy and is collected weekly. The subscribed brown bin is for accepted garden waste.
Do I need to book Stobhill or Penicuik Recycling Centre?
Ordinary household visits by car do not currently use a general appointment system. A booking system applies at Stobhill for vans and trailers. Check the live council guidance before travelling because access arrangements can change.
Best Next Step: Check Your Exact Midlothian Calendar
Midlothian’s 2026 service is easier to use once the new recycling split is clear: green for paper and card, blue for containers, grey for residual waste. These three wheelie bins now operate on a three-weekly cycle, but the actual dates belong to your property calendar.
Check the address result, put the correct container out by 6:30am and use the missed-bin form only after confirming the date, presentation and service status.
