Batteries and disposable vapes must stay out of household bins. Use the correct battery or small electrical disposal route because lithium batteries can cause waste-vehicle and processing fires.
Darlington’s own advice is to put an uncertain item into normal rubbish rather than risk contaminating the recycling load.
Fast sorting sequence: food? → food bin. Glass bottle/jar? → glass box. Accepted dry item? → mixed recycling. Everything else → check before binning.
Exactly how to use Darlington’s new food-waste service
Put food into the kitchen caddy
Use it for peelings, leftovers, out-of-date food removed from packaging, tea bags and coffee grounds.
Tie the liner when the caddy is full
This keeps the outside container cleaner and easier to manage.
Put the tied liner into the outside food bin
Do not put ordinary packaging into the food-waste container.
Put the outside food bin out weekly
It goes out on the same day as the general recycling collection.
Have it ready by 7am
Do not rely on the time the vehicle normally arrives because collection times can change.
Food accepted
Peelings, leftovers, meat, fish, bones, dairy, plate scrapings, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells and pet food.
Keep out
Food packaging, liquids such as soup or oil, garden waste, pet waste and cat litter.

Place refuse and recycling at the edge of the property without blocking the pavement.
Long driveway
Move bins, boxes and bags to the end of the drive for collection.
Terraced rubbish
Where there is a normal back-lane arrangement, put household rubbish in the back lane.
Terraced recycling
In most cases, recycling should go at the front because the recycling wagons can be too wide for the back lanes.
Yes. Darlington says containers can be presented after 8pm the night before.
Still present by 7am. A different crew or route can arrive earlier.
Low-risk routine: after 8pm the night before → correct location → correct containers → ready before 7am.
Bin still full? Do these checks in this exact order
Collections can continue until 6pm and there is no fixed arrival time.
Different wagons collect the two waste streams. The second wagon may still be on its route.
The crew may already have passed even if it normally arrives later.
The council says it may empty the bin but will not take ordinary extra bags placed beside it.

Plan disposal rather than waiting for a return
Darlington says it does not return for missed household bins. Suitable household waste can be taken to the Mewburn Road HWRC or retained for the next scheduled collection.
Fast decision: before 6pm = wait; one wagon only = wait; rejected/late = correct it; genuine miss after 6pm = next collection or HWRC.
Lost bin, damaged bin, new house or not enough capacity?
Replacement is chargeable
Current council charges include £27.80 for a standard 240L bin and £6.80 for a glass or Scheme B recycling box.
Repair/replacement free
If the collection vehicle or crew damages the bin, the council says it will repair or replace it free of charge.
Missing equipment can be free
If required equipment is missing when you move into an older property, Darlington says it will replace those missing items free.
Families of five or more can request a larger general-rubbish bin free of charge; the 240L bin is exchanged.
Current replacement charges
Current delivery notice: Darlington is presently warning residents about delays with equipment deliveries. The normal equipment page states delivery within 10 working days, but the live delay notice means new orders may take longer.
Too much recycling? The council says it can provide an extra wheeled recycling bin or box. Do not solve a recycling-capacity problem by filling the general-rubbish bin.

Do normal Bank Holidays move Darlington bin day?

Call Street Scene on 01325 405111 before 1pm on the day before collection. A cancellation can receive a refund when made within that deadline.
Price-conflict tip: one council equipment page still displays an older bulky figure. For payment, use the dedicated bulky-waste booking page because that transaction-specific page currently shows £24.90.
Lowest-effort decision: donate if reusable → HWRC if you can safely transport → paid bulky collection if pickup is needed.

Darlington residents taking domestic household waste in a car can normally enter without a permit.

Windy day? The council says the HWRC can close during dangerous high winds and notes that its Facebook page may be updated while the HWRC webpage itself may not be.
