The phrase “recycling every two weeks” can be misleading because each recycling colour has its own four-week cycle.

Glass does not go in either Highland household recycling wheelie bin.

Tie your last remaining liner to the handle of the outdoor caddy when putting it out. The collection crew should leave a replacement roll.

August 2026: first-collection warning
Highland encouraged residents to order by 1 August 2026 to help ensure permits were ready for the first September collections.
That priority date has passed. You can still apply, but do not assume a newly ordered permit will be ready for the very first September collection until the council confirms it.

Drivers and supervisors assess individual roads for safe vehicle access. In extreme conditions the council can withdraw an entire route or service temporarily.

Highland Flats and Communal Bin Collections
Flats and other shared properties may use larger-capacity communal containers rather than the individual 140/180L grey and 240L recycling bins used at standard houses.
Highland’s collection policy allows larger communal capacity for:

Follow the actual bin-store signage
A communal property may not visually match the standard household container setup, so use the labels on the shared bins and the collection arrangement for that development.

Missing, Extra and New-Build Highland Bins
Missing or damaged household bin
Highland currently replaces missing or damaged household bins free of charge.
You need to identify the address and which bin is missing or damaged.
Garden bin is different
A missing or damaged brown garden bin uses the separate garden-waste replacement route and requires a valid garden permit.
Who can qualify for extra household capacity?
The current service is free where at least one qualifying condition is met:
- Five or more people permanently live at the property.
- A resident has a medical condition generating additional waste.
- The household has two or more children in nappies.
Recycling use may be checked first
The detailed policy allows the council to require evidence that the household is making proper use of available recycling before an extra residual bin is approved.
Only an approved additional residual bin carrying the council’s authorised second-bin identification is collected as an extra refuse bin.
Extra food capacity
In an area receiving food-waste collection, qualifying households can also receive one additional outdoor food caddy under the detailed policy.

You may qualify if a physical condition prevents you from moving your bins and nobody else living in the home can help.
What the service changes
Instead of requiring the resident to move the container to the standard point, Highland can collect it from an agreed location on the property, such as near the back door.
