Manchester Bin Collection 2026: Check Your Date, Bin Colour & Missed Collection
Manchester bin collection dates are tied to the property. Use Manchester City Council’s live collection-day service, select the correct address and check the colour due before moving a bin to the collection point.
For standard collections, bins should be ready by 7am. Manchester uses grey or black general-waste containers, blue paper-and-card recycling, brown container recycling and green food-and-garden recycling.
Manchester Bin Collection: 30-Second Answer
Open Manchester City Council’s live bin-date checker and select your exact property. Put the scheduled container outside your home where it can be easily seen from the road by 7am. For a terraced property, the council says bins should normally be placed at the end of the alley nearest the home, outside any gates.
If only your bin has been missed, Manchester currently allows a report after 7pm on collection day. If the whole street has been missed, leave the bins out because the council says it will normally return the next day; if the street still has not been emptied by 12pm the following day, use the missed-collection route.

How to Check Your Manchester Bin Collection Date
Manchester City Council has moved its bin-date lookup to a dedicated online service. The old council checker now redirects residents to the new collection-date portal.
-
Open the official Manchester bin-date checker.
Use the live council service rather than relying on an old PDF calendar, search-result snippet or neighbour’s routine. -
Start the collection-day lookup.
Follow the address prompts in the Manchester service. -
Select the exact property.
Flats, communal-bin buildings and nearby houses may not always use the same container arrangement. -
Read the date and bin colour together.
Saving only the weekday can lead to the wrong recycling container being presented. -
Check current collection issues on the day.
The planned calendar and the operational status are different things. A street-wide delay can affect a normally scheduled collection.
Where and When to Leave Manchester Bins
By 7am
Have the scheduled bin, box or approved bag ready by 7am on the correct collection day.
Visible from the road
For most houses, the collection point is outside the home where the container can be easily seen from the road.
Terraced homes
Manchester says residents should normally place containers at the end of the alley nearest the home and outside any gates.
Close the lid
Do not overfill a bin. The council warns that an overloaded container with a lid that will not close may not be emptied.

Manchester Missed Bin: Check This Before Reporting
Manchester treats a single missed household container differently from a whole street that has not been collected. Start by confirming that the container was due, correctly presented by 7am and contained the right material.
-
Confirm the scheduled date and colour.
Reopen the Manchester property checker instead of assuming the usual pattern. -
Check the set-out time and place.
The bin, box or bag must have been ready before 7am in the correct collection position. -
Check for a tag or obvious rejection reason.
Incorrect recycling, overloading or the wrong presentation point can mean the collection was refused rather than missed. -
Decide whether it is only your bin or the whole street.
The reporting timing differs. -
If only your container was missed, wait until after 7pm.
Manchester’s current guidance says an individual missed bin can be reported after 7pm on collection day. -
Report promptly.
Manchester currently says that when more than five days have passed since collection day it cannot normally return, and the bin will instead be emptied on the next scheduled collection.

Why Manchester May Leave a Bin Unemptied
Wrong material
If the wrong items are in a recycling container, Manchester can place an advice tag on it and leave it unemptied.
Too heavy or overfilled
An overloaded bin can be unsafe for crews and lifting equipment. Remove excess material before the next collection.
Access problem
Vehicles or another obstruction can prevent crews from reaching a collection point. Manchester says it will try to return where access caused the missed collection.
Manchester Food and Garden Waste
Manchester’s green container is used for food waste and, where provided, garden waste. Accepted food includes raw and cooked food, meat and fish bones, tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells. Garden material can include grass cuttings, hedge clippings, twigs and branches.
Use compostable liners
The council says food waste should be placed in compostable bags before it goes into the green container.
Free caddy liners
Manchester provides an online route to order replacement kitchen food-waste bags.
Keep everything inside
Manchester’s current collection-issues guidance says food and garden recycling will only be collected when it is inside the correct bin.
Manchester Flats, Apartments and Shared Bins
Apartment and communal-bin arrangements should not be treated as if they were individual house collections. Manchester advises residents with collection questions to contact their caretaker or building manager first.
Use the labelled shared bins
Keep paper/card, container recycling, food waste and general rubbish in the correct communal streams provided for the building.
Keep the bin store clear
Do not use shared bin stores for electrical appliances, bulky items, full apartment clearances or business waste.
Ask the building manager
Container numbers, access and collection points can be managed at building level, particularly in larger developments.
Get Manchester Bin-Day Email Reminders
Manchester offers email alerts for eligible homes with their own wheelie bins. The alerts can remind residents which bins to put out and can also provide information about collection issues or changes.
One property per email address
Manchester says one email address can be registered for one property. More than one email address can receive alerts for the same property.
Shared bins are excluded
The email-alert service is not available where residents use shared bins, such as many apartment blocks or alleyway-bin arrangements.
Missing, Stolen or New Manchester Bin
If a bin has disappeared, been stolen or was not at the property when you moved in, Manchester directs residents to order a replacement.
Need a Larger Bin or Extra Recycling Capacity?
Manchester provides separate routes for extra recycling containers and additional general-waste capacity. The council’s order service says additional waste capacity is limited to qualifying circumstances such as larger families or households with a relevant medical need.
More recycling space
Residents can request extra or larger recycling containers where the available service does not provide enough recycling capacity.
More general-waste capacity
A larger grey bin or approved additional capacity requires an application rather than simply putting out a second standard rubbish bin.
Manchester Bulky Waste Collection: Current Charges and Rules
Manchester City Council provides a large-unwanted-item collection for domestic households. Items must be booked in advance and placed on the pavement beside the road at the front of the property so the crew and vehicle can reach them safely.
Where to leave bulky items
- At the front of the property beside the road.
- Where a vehicle and two-person crew can reach and lift them safely.
- Not inside the home.
- Not in a front garden, driveway or bin store.
- Keep access free from gates, walls, parked vehicles and other obstructions.
Manchester Household Waste Recycling Centres
Greater Manchester’s household waste recycling centres are managed through the Greater Manchester waste service rather than the city’s normal kerbside collection system. Manchester residents can use Greater Manchester household recycling centres for household waste and recycling subject to the site and vehicle rules.

Manchester Christmas and New Year Bin Collections 2026

Paper Christmas cards and suitable paper wrapping can go into the blue recycling stream. Batteries and electrical Christmas items should not be put in household bins.
