Birmingham household waste • 2026 transition

Your Birmingham bin day now depends on address + service stage

Birmingham bin collection arrangements are changing in phases. One property may still be following industrial-action instructions while another has moved to weekly food waste and an alternating rubbish/recycling schedule.

Check the exact address first. Then confirm whether the redesigned service has started before deciding which bin to put out or whether a collection is genuinely missed.

Exact postcode + address Bin ready before 6am Missed report after 1:30pm Food waste rolling out weekly

Birmingham bin collection: fastest safe answer

There is no reliable city-wide “which bin today?” answer during the 2026 transition. Use the exact property checker, read the current disruption notice and then check whether Birmingham’s new collection schedule has reached your address.

Collection lookup Postcode + exact address Do not copy a neighbour or old calendar.
Set-out Before 6:00am Not before 3:30pm the previous day.
New system Alternating fortnights Rubbish one week, recycling the next once active.
Food waste Weekly once started Wait for the confirmed property start date.
Missed general waste After 1:30pm Only when the collection qualifies as missed.

Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not Birmingham City Council, Unite the Union or a waste contractor. Birmingham City Council’s property-specific schedule, household letter and live service notice should take priority when older and newer general guidance differ.

First decision

Which Birmingham waste system applies to your address?

This is the key 2026 question. Birmingham’s newer schedule page says recycling is resuming and will move to alternating fortnightly rubbish/recycling as the redesigned service reaches households. Some older live council pages still show industrial-action instructions saying recycling is suspended.
Existing / disruption arrangement

Follow the current address and strike instruction

  • Check the usual household-waste day.
  • Read the industrial-action message shown by the council.
  • Do not assume recycling has resumed just because another Birmingham street has new bins.
  • Leave an uncollected grey-lid bin out when the current council instruction tells you to do so.
Redesigned service active

Weekly food + alternating rubbish/recycling

  • Food waste is collected every week.
  • Residual rubbish moves to a fortnightly pattern.
  • Recycling is collected on the alternate fortnight.
  • New recycling containers may be issued as the service reaches the property.
Have you received a council letter with a start date?

Use the stated start date and schedule rather than switching early.

Strong signal
Have food caddies or a second recycling container arrived?

This suggests rollout activity, but container delivery alone does not prove the new collection cycle has started.

Check date
Does the schedule-change checker confirm the new arrangement?

Use that confirmation together with the latest household communication.

Use result

Do not switch early: the citywide redesign does not mean every Birmingham household started fortnightly rubbish and recycling on the same date.

What to do now: determine your service stage before reading any generic “this week is recycling week” advice.

Address-level lookup

How to check your Birmingham bin collection day

Use both Birmingham’s normal collection checker and the 2026 schedule-change service. The first identifies the property; the second helps determine whether the redesigned service has reached it.
1

Open Birmingham’s collection-day checker

Open Birmingham City Council’s collection-day service rather than using an old calendar or another household’s dates.

2

Enter the full postcode

Enter the postcode for the property where the household waste is actually collected.

3

Select the exact address

Choose the correct house, flat, maisonette or converted property from the address results.

4

Read the live service notice

Read any industrial-action or service-transition message before interpreting the collection dates.

5

Check whether the 2026 schedule has changed

Use Birmingham’s schedule-change service to confirm whether weekly food waste and the alternating rubbish and recycling system has reached the property.

6

Save the actual dates

Record the real rubbish, recycling and food-waste dates instead of remembering only a weekday.

Helping an older or less-digital resident? Write down the next two dated collections rather than just “every other Tuesday.” Add “food caddy weekly” only after the food-waste service has officially started for that address.

What to save: actual date + waste stream + whether the redesigned service is active.

2026 service map

Four Birmingham household waste routes to separate correctly

Grey-lid household rubbish

Non-recyclable residual household waste. Under the redesigned service this moves to the confirmed fortnightly rubbish week.

Household recycling

Recycling is returning as the redesigned service rolls out. The new pattern alternates recycling and household-rubbish fortnights.

Weekly food waste once active

Use the brown outdoor caddy once Birmingham confirms the property’s food-waste start date.

Garden waste service

The live garden-waste page currently carries a suspension-until-further-notice message. Check its status before relying on an old subscription routine.

Transition rule: an item being part of Birmingham’s future redesigned service does not mean that collection has already started at your address.

What to do now: match the item to the correct stream, then match that stream to your current property schedule.

Presentation rules

Before 6am: the Birmingham set-out checklist

Earliest previous-day time 3:30pm

Do not put the bin out earlier than 3:30pm on the day before collection.

Collection-day deadline Before 6:00am

Have the correct container at the required collection point before 6am.

Normal location

Front of the property

Use the front of the home unless Birmingham has told the property to use another collection point.

Bring it back

By midday next day

After emptying, return the bin to the property by midday on the day after collection.

Street-storage enforcement: Birmingham’s current guidance says bins should not be stored on the street. Where a Notice of Intent is issued and the problem is not corrected, the page states that a £60 fine and bin removal can follow.

Simple household routine: put the confirmed container out after 3:30pm the evening before, make sure it is ready before 6am, then bring it back after emptying.

Container transition

Birmingham recycling: identify your container setup first

Birmingham can currently show different recycling-container arrangements because the second-bin system is part of the phased redesign. Follow the containers actually assigned to your property.
Older wheelie-bin setup

Blue-lid bin + removable pod

Pod: paper and cardboard.

Main bin: accepted plastic, metal and glass.

Newer two-bin setup

Green lid + blue lid

Green-lid recycling bin: paper and cardboard where the new arrangement is active.

Blue-lid recycling bin: accepted plastic, metal and glass.

No wheelie-bin setup

Recycling boxes

Some unsuitable-for-wheelie-bin properties can have box-based arrangements. Follow the container instructions supplied to that property.

Typical accepted groups

  • Paper and clean cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Food and drink cans
  • Clean foil and suitable aerosols
  • Accepted plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays

Common contamination checks

  • Food-soiled card
  • Carrier bags and black sacks
  • Plastic film and wrappers under the current older container guidance
  • Batteries and electricals
  • Pyrex, mirrors and ceramics
  • Polystyrene

Industrial-action conflict: Birmingham’s older live recycling page still carries a recycling-suspension notice. The newer schedule-change service says recycling is resuming in phases. Your current property schedule and latest council communication should decide what goes out.

Do not copy another street: container colour and collection status may differ while the redesign is being introduced.

Weekly once active

Birmingham food waste: use the start date, not the delivery date

Birmingham’s redesign introduces separate weekly food-waste collections. The council says households will be told when their weekly service starts and will receive indoor and outdoor food caddies.
Indoor

Kitchen caddy

Use the indoor caddy for daily food scraps before transferring them to the outdoor collection caddy.

Outdoor

Brown collection caddy

Once the service is active, put the outdoor caddy out by 6am on its scheduled weekly collection day.

Timing

Different collection vehicle

The food caddy can be collected by a different vehicle, so it may not be emptied at the same time as the grey-lid bin.

Food that can use the service

  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Bread, rice and pasta
  • Leftovers and plate scrapings
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Eggs and eggshells

Keep out of the food caddy

  • Food packaging
  • Paper plates
  • Black rubbish bags
  • Liquids such as milk
  • Cooking oil and fat
  • Flowers and garden waste

Caddy not emptied? A contamination tag means remove the wrong item and present the caddy on the next scheduled day. If no tag was left and the caddy should have been collected, the council says to use the normal missed-bin process.

Key distinction: receiving caddies is not the same as reaching the official start date. Follow the confirmed property date.

Missed-bin decision

Can you report your Birmingham bin as missed?

Was that waste stream actually due?

Verify the exact property date first.

Check date
Was the bin out before 6am?

The council says a bin put out after 6am may not qualify as missed.

Check time
Was it marked as contaminated?

A contaminated bin cannot use the normal missed-collection route until the problem is corrected.

Fix first
Does Birmingham already know the round is incomplete?

Road closures or service disruption may already be recorded and can prevent a separate report.

Check notice
Is it after 1:30pm on the due day?

The current general-waste reporting window opens after 1:30pm.

Report if eligible
1

Confirm that the collection was due

Check the exact address and make sure the relevant waste stream was scheduled.

2

Check presentation and contamination

Confirm the bin was out before 6am, accessible to the crew and not marked as contaminated.

3

Check whether the council already knows about the round

A known incomplete round, road closure or service disruption may mean a separate missed-bin report is not available.

4

Report after 1:30pm when eligible

The current Birmingham service allows a missed general-waste collection to be reported after 1:30pm on the scheduled day.

5

Leave the bin out and keep the reference

If Birmingham confirms or accepts the missed collection and can rearrange it, leave the bin out and keep the report reference for follow-up.

If the rearranged collection still does not happen: Birmingham says that after two working days you should take the bin back onto your property and present it on the next collection day of that type.

Fast decision: due + before 6am + accessible + no contamination + no known route failure + after 1:30pm = check the reporting service.

Industrial action

What to do when the normal Birmingham schedule is disrupted

Current Birmingham waste pages still carry industrial-action guidance. At the same time, newer pages are introducing redesigned collections in phases. Always read the latest notice attached to your property or service.

Grey-lid household waste

Current disruption guidance tells residents to continue presenting household waste on the normal designated collection day and leave it out if the round is not completed.

Recycling

Do not assume citywide status. Older strike pages say kerbside recycling is suspended; newer rollout guidance says recycling is resuming in phases.

Assisted and clinical

The council’s industrial-action FAQ identifies assisted and clinical waste collections as priority services.

Garden and bulky

The live service pages currently display suspension messages. Check again before attempting a new subscription or booking.

Do not create an unofficial dumping point: rubbish already piled beside a street or pavement does not make that location an authorised collection point. Use the council’s waste routes instead.

During disruption: address result → live notice → service-specific instruction. That sequence is safer than a saved social-media post.

Property-specific help

Missing bin, flats or difficulty moving containers?

Replacement wheelie bin

Birmingham’s May 2026 placement page says replacement-bin requests are temporarily paused because of a supply issue and advises residents to use bin bags until a new container can be supplied.

Flat or shared bin store

Confirm the exact property, communal collection point and who controls access. A locked or obstructed store can produce a different problem from a kerbside missed bin.

Assisted collection

If nobody in the household can move the bin because of disability or ill health, check Birmingham’s assisted collection route.

Someone aged 16+ can help?

The council’s assisted-collection eligibility guidance says the service may not be available where another person aged 16 or over in the household can put the rubbish out.

Before declaring a wheelie bin missing: check neighbouring properties, the communal store and the usual post-collection location. Also check whether it was moved or removed following an enforcement issue.

Recurring access problem? Solve it through an assisted or property-management route rather than repeatedly filing ordinary missed-bin reports.

Services with current restrictions

Garden waste and bulky items: check live status before paying

Garden waste

Current page: suspended until further notice

The council’s garden-waste page currently directs residents toward alternatives such as Household Recycling Centres and home composting.

Bulky waste

Current page: new requests paused

The live bulky-waste page says bookings made before the suspension will still be collected, while new removal requests are paused.

Reusable item

Try reuse before disposal

Clean furniture or another usable household item may be suitable for donation or reuse rather than paid disposal.

Price caution: the bulky-waste page still contains a historical service price alongside the current suspension notice. This guide does not present that figure as a live bookable 2026 price while new requests are paused.

Before paying or arranging anything: confirm that the service has reopened and that the item or property is eligible.

Extra disposal capacity

Fixed HRC or Mobile Household Waste Centre?

Fixed Household Recycling Centre

Best for separated recycling and larger disposal trips

  • Birmingham has five fixed HRCs.
  • Only Birmingham residents can make household bookings.
  • Proof of address may be required.
  • Same-day slots can be available from at least two hours ahead.
  • Bookings can currently be made up to three days in advance.
  • Vans and larger trailers use the appropriate vehicle booking route.
Mobile Household Waste Centre

Best for a local general-waste or bulky drop-off when scheduled nearby

  • No booking required.
  • No ID required.
  • No charge for household use.
  • Unlimited visits under the published service rules.
  • Visits occur for one morning and exact local times vary.
  • Vans are not accepted during the industrial-action arrangement.

Mobile centre is not a mini fixed HRC: building rubble, soil, paint, white goods, asbestos, oils, gas cylinders and several other items are excluded. Normal separated household recycling should use the appropriate fixed-HRC route.

Choose by waste type first: local convenience is not useful if the mobile centre cannot legally accept what is in the vehicle.

Special disposal routes

Clinical waste and asbestos do not belong in normal bins

Clinical waste

Birmingham provides a household clinical-waste route for eligible residents. Bags or sharps boxes must be placed on the property the night before; crews do not knock at the door.

Sharps

A sharps collection is requested through the clinical-waste service. Use the correct supplied container and arrange collection rather than placing needles in household rubbish.

Medicines

Do not use the household clinical collection for pharmaceuticals. Unwanted medicines should use the appropriate pharmacy route.

Household asbestos

Birmingham’s January 2026 page describes a free home collection for up to six bags of correctly wrapped asbestos, limited to one request in a six-month period. Asbestos cannot be taken to a Household Recycling Centre.

Asbestos safety: do not break material unnecessarily or put it in the car for an HRC trip. Follow the council’s wrapping, handling and collection instructions.

Special waste rule: use the material-specific service rather than hiding hazardous or clinical items in a household container.

Holiday and weather checks

Do not reuse an old Birmingham Bank Holiday timetable

Industrial action plus the phased 2026 redesign makes a property-specific check more useful than assuming every Bank Holiday causes a standard one-day shift.

Check the address close to the date

Use the live property schedule rather than an old printout.

Check the current service notice

Industrial action, Christmas arrangements or another operational change can override the familiar routine.

Check HRC separately

Recycling-centre opening and booking arrangements are separate from kerbside collection dates.

Bad weather

Check service status before treating a weather-related delay as an ordinary missed collection or making an unnecessary HRC trip.

Holiday rule: exact address + latest service notice beats last year’s calendar.

Need council help?

Information to have ready before contacting Birmingham Waste Services

Waste & recycling phone 0121 303 1112

Use when the online waste route does not answer the service problem.

Have the address ready

Give the full Birmingham property address and postcode, not only the road name.

Have the waste stream ready

Say whether the problem concerns grey rubbish, recycling, food waste, assisted collection or another service.

Have the reference ready

If you have already submitted a missed-bin or another request, keep the confirmation/reference available.

Useful phone wording: “My address is [full address]. The [waste stream] was due on [date]. It was presented before 6am. The current service stage at my property is [existing/new if known]. My reference is [reference]. The unresolved issue is [one sentence].”

Better escalation: exact address + exact date + exact waste stream + reference gives the council more to work with than “my bins haven’t been done.”

Specific resident questions

Birmingham bin collection FAQs

How do I check my Birmingham bin collection day?

Use Birmingham City Council’s collection-day service with your full postcode and exact address. Then check whether the redesigned 2026 collection schedule has started at that property before deciding which container should be presented.

Has Birmingham’s 2026 waste schedule changed at every address?

No. Birmingham is introducing the redesigned waste service in phases. The council says households will be told when their service changes, so the exact address result and the latest council communication should take priority over a generic city-wide schedule.

What time should Birmingham bins be put out?

Current Birmingham guidance says bins should be put out before 6:00am on collection day, not before 3:30pm the day before, and should be returned to the property by midday on the day after collection.

When can I report a missed Birmingham bin?

The current missed-collection service says a missed general-waste collection can be reported after 1:30pm on the day it was due, provided the council does not already know the round is incomplete and the bin was correctly presented and not contaminated.

What happens after an accepted Birmingham missed-bin report?

If Birmingham knows it missed the collection or accepts a report and can rearrange it, the council says it will do so within two working days. Leave the bin out during that period. If it is still not collected after two working days, return it to the property and present it on the next collection day of that type.

Are Birmingham garden waste and bulky-waste services operating normally?

The current Birmingham council pages still display suspension notices for garden-waste collections and new bulky-waste requests because of industrial action. Check the live service page before paying, booking or assuming either service has restarted.

Editorial check

Why this Birmingham guide uses an address-first answer

Newer rollout information

Birmingham’s schedule-change page says weekly food waste is being introduced and recycling will move to an alternating fortnightly pattern with household waste.

Older disruption information still live

Separate Birmingham pages still display industrial-action messages telling households not to present recycling during suspension.

Safer resident interpretation

The latest address-specific schedule and direct household communication should override a generic citywide statement when the two service states overlap.

Research check

Core operational facts in this revision were checked against live Birmingham City Council and GOV.UK pages on 28 August 2026.

Internal-link audit: potentially relevant BinCollectionGuide.org pages were discoverable in search, but the site’s XML post sitemap could not be reliably parsed in the research environment. No internal URL has therefore been labelled or inserted as “sitemap verified” in this revision.
