Independent resident guide for Bolton, Farnworth, Horwich, Westhoughton, Blackrod, Kearsley, Little Lever and other Bolton Council addresses.
Check the address, spot the colour and put the right Bolton bin out
A Bolton bin collection date should be checked against the exact property. Bolton uses different cycles for grey, beige, burgundy, green and food-waste containers, so a neighbour’s bin or an old calendar is not a reliable final answer.
Use this page to identify tonight’s container, avoid contamination, diagnose a non-collection, handle excess cardboard, compare extra-capacity options and plan bulky waste or a recycling-centre trip.
Bolton bin collection: 30-second answer
Enter the postcode in Bolton Council’s live checker and select the exact property. The standard household pattern is grey every two weeks, beige every four weeks, burgundy every two weeks, food waste weekly and the standard green bin every two weeks. Present the correct container by 7am with the lid closed.
Independent guide: BinCollectionGuide.org is not Bolton Council. Live collection dates, reports, applications, payments and bookings should be completed through Bolton Council or Recycle for Greater Manchester after using the guidance below.
How to check your Bolton bin collection day
Open the official Bolton collection checker
Use Bolton Council’s live collection-date service rather than an old calendar or screenshot.
Enter the complete postcode
Type the full postcode carefully so the correct address list is returned.
Select the exact property
Choose the correct house, flat or named property instead of assuming every property on the street shares the same result.
Read the bin colour and date together
Record the waste stream as well as the date so you do not put out the wrong container.
Prepare the bin for the 7am collection window
Place the correct bin at the edge of your property or agreed collection point by 7am with the lid closed and access clear.
Household reminder: save “BURGUNDY — Tuesday” rather than only “bin day Tuesday.” Bolton’s different colours do not share the same frequency.
Do this now: confirm property → colour → date. Then set the reminder for the evening before.
What bin goes out tonight in Bolton?
Prepare general waste
Use the grey bin for non-recyclable household rubbish. Everything should fit inside so the lid can close.
Prepare paper and card
Flatten cardboard and remove plastic, polystyrene and other contamination before presentation.
Prepare container recycling
Empty and rinse accepted bottles, pots, tubs, trays, cans, tins, glass jars, aerosols and foil.
Check which container is due
Food-waste containers are weekly. Standard green bins for food and garden waste are normally fortnightly.
Before bed: correct colour + no contamination + lid closed + access clear + ready before 7am.
Bolton bin colours and what each one is for
Grey bin — general waste
Normal frequency: every two weeks.
- Crisp packets and pet-food pouches
- Plastic film and bags

- Tissues and wet wipes
Keep out: rubble, asbestos and electrical goods.
Beige bin — paper and card
Normal frequency: every four weeks.
- Newspapers and magazines
- Books and catalogues
- Cardboard and card packaging
- Cartons such as Tetra Pak
- Non-foil wrapping paper
Keep out: plastic bags, polystyrene, film, glass, cans and food waste.
Burgundy bin — glass, cans and accepted plastic containers
Normal frequency: every two weeks.
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
- Glass bottles and jars
- Food tins and drinks cans
- Metal tubes and aerosols
- Foil
Keep out: crisp packets, plastic film, carrier bags and pet-food pouches.
Food-waste container — weekly food waste
Normal frequency: weekly.
- Meat and fish, including bones
- Fruit and vegetables
- Plate leftovers
- Bread, rice and pasta
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
Keep out: liquids, plastic packaging, glass and pet waste.
Green bin — food and garden waste
Normal frequency: every two weeks.
- Flowers and plants
- Leaves and grass cuttings
- Hedge clippings
- Twigs and small branches
- Suitable hay and straw pet bedding
Keep out: plastic bags, soil, stone, rubble, cat litter and dog/cat faeces.
2026 soft-plastic warning: Bolton’s current burgundy guidance still excludes plastic film and carrier bags. England’s national requirement for plastic-film packaging and bags enters the plastic recycling stream from 31 March 2027, so do not treat the future rule as current local acceptance.
Sorting rule: if an item is unclear, check the current local A–Z route rather than guessing from the material alone.
Too much cardboard for the beige bin?
Flatten it first
Break large boxes down and use the space inside the beige bin efficiently before putting anything beside it.
Keep it visible and unbagged
Do not wrap the cardboard in plastic or hide it inside a bag.
Remove contamination
Take out polystyrene, plastic film and other non-cardboard packaging.
Keep it secure and dry
The household is responsible for retrieving cardboard if it blows away.
Keep the amount manageable
The extra cardboard must be able to fit inside the emptied beige bin with the lid closed because crews use the bin to lift it into the vehicle.
Too much for this rule? Wait for the next collection, request a waste audit for regular capacity problems or use a household recycling centre.
Bolton missed bin: check the cause before reporting
Bolton can show the affected road, container, reason and return action.
Recheck the exact property before treating the bin as missed.
A bin left on private land or put out too late may not qualify for a return.
Remove excess or incorrect items and prepare it correctly for the next eligible collection.
Skips, parked vehicles, roadworks, snow, ice and flooding are listed collection barriers.
Check the known missed-streets list
If Bolton already lists your street as missed, do not submit a duplicate report; follow the return action shown.
Confirm the bin was actually due
Use the exact property checker and make sure that colour or food-waste container was scheduled.
Check presentation and access
Confirm it was out by 7am with the lid closed and that parked cars, skips, roadworks, snow, ice or flooding did not block access.
Check for contamination or a refusal reason
Remove wrong materials or excess waste if the bin was not eligible for collection.
Report a genuine miss within the stated window
For qualifying grey and green or food-waste misses, Bolton says to contact the council before 5pm on the next working day after the collection was due.
Decision: listed street → wait for council return. Genuine unlisted miss → report. Rejected/late/blocked bin → correct the cause.
Grey or beige bin always full?
Extra grey capacity is assessed
Bolton’s current criteria include households with six or more people, three or more people in nappies, or additional non-clinical waste caused by a medical condition. Available recycling services must also be used.
Regular paper/card overflow
A recycling officer can check whether the existing four-weekly beige-bin capacity is being used efficiently before a second bin is approved.
£36 if approved
Bolton’s current Help with your rubbish page lists a £36 administration and delivery charge for approved extra grey capacity and an approved second beige bin.
Check the live order page
Current Bolton recycling-container pages list £36 administration and delivery for new or replacement recycling containers. A replacement black food caddy is currently listed at £12.
Old-page price warning: some older Bolton subpages still display earlier £34 or £35 figures. Use the current consolidated service page or transaction stage to confirm the amount before paying.
Best route: occasional overflow → sort/flatten/recycle better. Recurring eligible overflow → request a waste audit.
Bolton extra green bin subscription: current cost and limits
Additional garden-waste capacity for eligible households.
Current live service setup and delivery fee.
Current price is stated as held until 31 March 2027.
Collected alongside the normal food-and-garden service.
Important: the paid extra green bin is for garden waste only. Food waste must not be placed in the additional subscription bin, even though Bolton’s standard food-and-garden system also uses green containers.
Freshness check: a February 2026 news story referred to a £35 setup fee, but the live subscription page now shows £36. Use the live service price before payment.
Choose this when: the normal green bin is consistently too small for garden waste and you already receive Bolton’s standard food-and-garden service.
Bolton assisted bin collection
Examples Bolton lists
- Mobility problems
- Health problems
- Being over 72 years old
What can happen next?
A recycling officer may visit the property as part of the request or assessment.
On collection day
Relevant gates should be unlocked between 7am and 6pm so the crew can collect and return the bins.
Where crews will not collect
Bolton says bins will not be retrieved from inside buildings or garages.
Use this route when: the recurring problem is physically moving the bin, not the council missing a properly presented collection.
Bolton bulky waste: price, eligibility and preparation
Current standard household bulky-waste charge.
Count multi-part items carefully before booking.
Collection day depends on the household’s normal bin day.
One free collection may be available
Eligible households can request one free bulky collection per financial year while the council’s limited funding remains available.
Not available for: businesses, landlords or empty properties. Check the accepted-item list before paying because some materials and oversized or specialist items are excluded.
Before paying: check whether the item can be reused, donated, sold, taken to a recycling centre or removed by a retailer delivering a replacement appliance.
Booking preparation: item count + accepted-item check + dry accessible location + gate unlocked + pets secured.
Hurstwood Court or Salford Road: choose the better Bolton tip route
Raikes Lane, Bolton, BL3 2NP
Current opening: Monday–Sunday, 8am–8pm. Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Quieter periods listed: weekdays before 10am or after 4pm; weekends before 11am or after 3pm.
Salford Road, Bolton, BL5 1DG
Monday–Saturday: 8am–8pm.
Sunday & Bank Holidays: 10am–4pm. Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Check the vehicle before travelling
Vans, hire vans, pick-up trucks and twin-axle trailers need a permit. Recycle for Greater Manchester says the permit account should be created at least two working days before the first visit.
Pick-up truck?
Hurstwood Court does not accept pick-up trucks. Salford Road is one of the larger centres that can accept them under the relevant permit rules.
Before leaving home: separate the load by material, confirm the vehicle rule and check the live centre page in case operating information has changed.
Quick choice: normal car → either centre. Pick-up truck → check Salford Road. Van/hire van/twin-axle trailer → permit first.
Do not copy an old Bolton Christmas or weather schedule
Christmas and New Year
Use the current property checker and any newly published festive notice rather than reusing a previous-year collection table.
Extra green subscription
The current paid extra-green-bin service states that subscription collections are suspended over Christmas and New Year.
Snow, ice or flooding
Bolton lists these conditions among reasons a crew may be unable to empty a bin.
Blocked roads
Parked cars, skips and roadworks can also prevent access, so a whole-street issue may appear on the known missed-streets list.
Best habit: recheck the live property date during festive weeks, severe weather and temporary service disruption.
